Is there a way to lock a file so it can only be opened with a password? I seem to recall we had a way to do this with OS 9.
Locking a file via the Get Info panel merely prevents it from being trashed, not from being viewed.

A couple times now, I've tried to copy DVDs onto my computer, then realize they won't work. I think it's because I copied the files and not the movie, but that's not the issue. The issue is, when I go to delete them, I can't. My parents have kept a password on my computer since I got it about three years ago. It's a rare occasion when they take the password off for a few days. Under those circumstances, when the password is off, I can delete the file without any issue. But when the password is on, I can't even move the file to the trash. It keeps asking for a password. I can't even move it to a different folder. It's just sitting on my desktop, taking up space. There's not even anything in it, because I stopped the copying only seconds after it started.
My question is, how can I get around the password to delete this file? I can't restart my computer or anything, because I'll need a password to do that. I need some trick that will bypass the password and get it into the trash. And deleted from the trash, if possible.
Would like to hear advices from you for password protect file application for my MBA. I don't mind to pay if it is good and easy to operate.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI used an external Windows formatted USB hard drive to transport my files from my old laptop to my new Black MacBook.
There are files I do not need, so on my MacBook I highlighted the files and directories and dragged them to the trash, a dialog box asked me for my password, I supplied it, then nothing happened, ie, it did not delete the files.
I am not sure what this means, and I want to delete the files.

View 17 Replies View RelatedGah, internet is messing up, logged me out I have to rewrite my whole long message....when transferring between my new MBP and ibook G4 on 1st startup.... it asked me to connect by firewire. Idon't have a firewire that has 1 side the new firewire connector and the other side old (I didn't even know that the shape of the firewire had changed). I tried to do it wirelessly and it said it was going to take 106 hours so I stopped it to use my computer.
Now I am trying to transfer again. I don't have a firewire cable that will work. I have an ethernet, but when I try to connect to my computer server (through ethernet or wirelessly) it says that I don't have sufficient privileges. My password (which I am sure is correct) DOES NOT WORK and I don't know why. I tried to disable all security so I can get in with no password, but nothing I do is working.
Any ideas? How can I transfer my files? How can I get back to that transfer wirelessly screen that occurred at start up? Migration Assistant only gives me a firewire option. Is there a firewire that will connect between old and new firewire models???
How do I set up a network connection with no password protection? (Or why isn't my password working?)
I had a very important file witch I had a password on. A .dmg file with password made in disk utility. Then i did manage to delete it from my Mac. I used Data Rescue 2 and got the .dmg file back.. But it had changed the name to D-00005.dmg istead of Private.dmg ( can not remember exactly what the file was named first )
The number one reason I know this must be the file is that it was 100mb. I only made one file with dmg file with 100mb. I remember the password, but it never ask for it when i try to open it. I`ll just get a message that it cant be open. If someone has a answere for me that can help me get what is in that .dmg file back I will transfer 50 usd on your fulltilt poker account.
Working on a friends computer he bought his wife for christmas. He has nothing on it, but the original OS. I don't have my disk with me and need to reset his password. I have watched several videos, but the part that gets me caught up is the
1. mount -uw/ (this part works)
2. rm/var/db.AppleSetupDone (this does not work) message says No such file or directory found.
He is running 10.6.

Suddenly Finder keeps asking me to input my password whenever I delete a file to the trash. Emptying the trash is fine, though.I thought maybe I had clicked an option in Onyx that caused this, but having looked several times, I can't see anything in Onyx that would cause this. I've tried repairing disk permissions using Disk Utility, with no effect.
