OS X :: Transfer Video Digitally From DVR To Mac?

Sep 1, 2008

I have a Dish Network DVR 625 and am trying to figure out how to transfer digital video from the DVR to my MacBook. The DVR has a USB port on the back of it, but as far as I know, it's useless. I know about transferring it via analog and then back to digital, but that takes a while and you lose quality. I'm wondering if anyone knows how to transfer the actual DVR files digitally.

Applications :: Digitally Condense Note Taking Software

Jan 29, 2009

Im looking for some good software that i can take some notes on for my college classes. Now when i say notes. i don't mean during lectures. Im a pencil and paper kind of guy when it comes to that. Im looking for a way to digitally condense my notes. Ive tried using word, openoffice, pages etc. but these just don't "feel" right. Im looking for something that gives me more room for formatting other than paragraph form. Im also working with some pretty complex physics equations. So i would like to have an equation editor built in. Im usually allowed a paper crib sheet for my tests at my college. (btw a crib sheet is a piece of paper that you can bring into the test and write whatever you want on it) So im looking for a way to condense my semester notes into a couple of sheets of paper.

OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Can't Digitally Sign And Encrypt Email Any Longer

Apr 20, 2012

I used to sign and encrypt my emails digitally and then send them to people. I had two email certificates from Comodo, and it's been a while they're expired. so I renewed my certificates and deleted the old ones from my keychain, then downloaded and added the new ones. The trouble is I no longer get the digitally sign the message and encrypt the message button when I compose a new email.

OS X Yosemite :: (10.10.1) Sound Settings Reset On Restart

Dec 2, 2014

I'm running OS X 10.10.1 on a 2010 Mac Pro with a Bose Companion 5 USB sound system.  Everything works great and as expected except when I restart the Mac Pro.  The sound settings switch off the Bose speakers and reverts back to the internal speakers of the computer.  I have to go in everytime and reset it back to the Bose sound system.  I never had this problem using Mavericks.

PowerPC :: Mac G5 - Monitor Breaking Up With Different Patterns

Nov 15, 2010

I'm trying to troubleshoot my Mac G5. When I start up the computer the monitor is breaking up with patterns of dots, colour problems, and broken images/text so the screen is unreadable. Frequently, the computer crashes or freezes. After I restart it about 4 times the monitor works fine. I've now had it on for a couple of days and it's been fine. Would this indicate a video card problem or some other issue and is there any tests that would help me determine the problem.

MacBook Pro :: It Keeps Breaking Hard Disks

Jun 13, 2012

MBP Mid 2009

Lion

8GB Ram

1TB HDD

The problem started with my MBP freezing about once per day (sometimes spinning wheel, sometimes complete unresponsiveness). After doing a hard reset, I would usually be given the grey screen with stop sign, and the machine wouldn't boot. Resetting the PRAM would fix this, and it would boot OK. This was going on for a few weeks (I did disk checks which came back fine).

Then a couple of days ago the machine froze (unresponsive), I did a hard reset but just got the chime and grey screen - no Apple logo, no spinning wheel, no stop sign. Nothing. I did PRAM and SMC resets, but still nothing. I tried booting safe, safe verbose, hardware test, single user - nothing would work; just chime and blank grey screen. So I thought my OS installation had died. But when I tried to boot to the Lion DVD, still nothing - grey screen, the DVD would spin up, then spin down to a stop. I thought it might me faulty RAM, but not having any others to try I just swapped the two pieces over. Nothing.

Then I plugged my external 500GB HDD in to the USB (which was the machine's original internal HDD) and suddenly the Lion DVD would boot. So, the internal 1TB was dead. I put the 500GB back inside, booted Lion DVD successfully, formatted the HDD and started the Lion install. This failed with an error message 'the support files can't be copied - restart to try again'. So I restarted and in disk utility it said the HDD S.M.A.R.T was failing and it had a serious fault which could not be fixed and needs to be replaced. The 500GB disk was working fine and had had very little use since being replaced by the 1TB in January this year (the 1TB was brand new in January). So it seems odd that the both decided to fail one day after each other.

Desktops :: IMac Slow / PS CS2 Breaking Up Images

Apr 3, 2009

I have an Imac at work, and it is agonizingly slow. Plus Photoshop CS2 is breaking up images so they are unworkable and is corrupting them. The hard drive says there is 202 GB available so -- is this a scratch disk problem and if so, why isn't 200 G enough? Does anyone have any help as to what I can do to speed this up? I have ordered (or are ordering at some point) another stick of RAM - but I am quite sure the problem is not going to be completely solved with that.

Applications :: Using Pages Breaking Page Layout?

Apr 20, 2009

A friend of mine did a publication using pages in which the final result was a pdf document which had 2 different page layouts. The first page was w26cm by h29.7cm and the rest of the pages were w52cm by h29.7cm.

I'm unable to contact him but he told me that he did this in pages. Im trying to do the same page format and cannot get 2 different sizes.

Is there a way in pages that you can do this and export it as a pdf? What I currently have is 2 documents with different size pages, so is there another way, such as another program that merges the two documents together?

Applications :: Breaking The Link Between ICal And The Computer's Clock?

Sep 9, 2010

Is there any way to decouple iCal from the computer's clock? I find the fact that if I reset the computer's clock it 'adjusts' everything in the calendar infuriating. When I try to look back at appointments from when I lived overseas a few years ago they are completely out of whack because iCal has 'fixed' all of the times by changing them to what they would have been in ET - in some cases moving them to a different day or making it look like I was attending meetings in the middle of the night.

This problem also exists going forward. I.e. if I fill in appointments before a trip, but then change the clock while I'm on the road so that, while working, I have the correct local time on my screen, iCal 'adjusts' everything in the calendar. This is not helpful.

Yes, I know I can designate a time zone for each appointment as I create it. But, again, that just makes the appointments all look strange on my calendar before I travel. In any case, it is an extra step in creating appointments which I should not have to take.

In short: I want my appointments to show in the calendar with the time I designated and for that not to change regardless of what I do to the computer's clock.

OS X Server :: Breaking Xserve Software RAID Mirror?

Jul 28, 2006

I want upgrade our xserve from 2 x 250GB mirrored discs running Mac OS X 10.3.9 on xserve to running 1 x 250GB system disc (keeping other as spare) and 2 x 500GB mirrored data discs. (Then upgrade to Tiger).

Can I break the software mirror with:
diskutil destroyRAID /dev/disk{x}
or does this destroy the data too? Would I be left with two working, bootable discs or just two RAID slices? If the latter, how can I convert them into 'normal' bootable discs?Would it be better to upgrade to Tiger first? Or not make much difference?

MacBook Pro :: Sound Output Device Stuck On Headphones - Other Sound Related Options ?

Dec 13, 2009

This started happening randomly earlier tonight, and I haven't managed to find a fix just yet.I was encoding a video file for quite awhile (I don't think that parts important, but I thought I'd include it anyway) and then I tried to play a youtube video. I noticed there was no sound, so I tried to up the volume using the Volume Up key on the keyboard. The volume visualisation appeared on the screen like normal (albeit a bit laggy), but the sound still didn't change, neither did I get the usual 'click' noise you get when you change the volume.I went looking into the sound options in the system prefs. only to find that the Output Sound device was headphones. For a test I plugged in some headphones to see what happened and, low and behold, the Output Sound device changed to the Internal Sound and my speakers were working again, but only with the headphones plugged in.

Hardware :: Is There Some USB Extension Or Sound Jack Item, Which Will Improve Sound Performance

And what about the subwoofer, does it need a special jack.Final question: is there something I could purchase to improve the sound that wouldn't be too expensive? I.e. is there some USB extension or sound jack item that I can buy, which will improve sound performance, and plug the speakers into that?

When surfing the net (like right now) or just letting it idle, my hard drive makes a slight "clunk" sound like the HD arm is hitting the edge of the case (or maybe starting up and shutting down?). Software :: Sound Not Coming Properly / Sound Changes Automatically From Normal To High

Feb 9, 2009

I just bought an iMac 24" 2.8Ghz Dual Core, 2Gb RAM, 320 HDD. This nice iMac has been with me only 2 days and the problems already started. I don't know why when I play a song either in iTunes or in web(audio streaming) the audio suddenly changes. It's as if you applied an EQ and removed all the low frecuencies and after a few seconds the sounds returned just as normal. When this "auto EQ" happens, the sound becomes "brighter" (I hope you understand what I am trying to say) but just as I said, after a few seconds, the sound is played normaly. I am running Mac OS X v 10.5.2.

MacBook Pro :: Seagate Hard Drive Makes Sound / Ca-chink Sound While Loading Page

Sep 1, 2009

I have a person that sent along this video and it concerns me that a hard drive would make such a noise. It's unlike anything I've heard in a drive. He claims the original owner installed a new Seagate 7200rpm in the book, and that it mostly happens when loading a web-page on Safari.

Every time I look up "hard drive click" I get the SMS triggered "tink" but this notebook is not in motion and instead makes a "ca-chink".

PowerPC :: Mac G5 Dual-Core 2.3GHz - Sound Card Needed For 5.1 Surround Sound Speakers?

Jul 24, 2008

I'm pretty new here, though I posted over a year ago here with a few questions as a beginning switcher. My switch completed in Christmas of 2005 with a late '05 Power Mac G5 Dual-Core 2.3GHz with 1GB RAM and 250GB HDD. I decided to get another monitor and it is a Sony 19" LCD one. I also didn't get any speakers since I used headphones a lot at the time. I recently decided to start using speakers. So temporarily, I am using the Altec Lansing BX1120 2.0 Stereo speakers from Walmart for only $15. They sound great but I would like 5.1 surround sound to watch my DVDs (and to soon upgrade to BluRay & SACD/DVD-A; but that's for another thread later on). Before I go on, I would like to ask questions and provide facts with what my 'puter has. My specific products I'm looking for is at the bottom of this message.

MacBook Pro :: Unibodeis Making Creaking Sound / Sound While Opening Lid

Aug 12, 2006

For some odd reason, I have been experiencing some creaking when I move the display of my Unibody 15.5" Macbook Pro. At all. It just is very annoying, as it has a distinct plastiky sound to it, and it was not there to begin with. I don't know if this matters, but I have a Speck clear case that I used, but then I took it off because it seemed to be twisting the display a bit. Is this creaking a known issue with the Unibodies, or is it just because of the Speck case? I have never dropped my computer, and it has never been mistreated. It just leads its life on my desk or in my laptop bag. Any ideas?

OS X :: Speakers Unable To Handle High Pitched Sound / Sound Gets Quite

May 1, 2008

I have a 24" aluminum iMac G5. I have never had a problem with sound before, and feel like this problem is isolated to a certain DVD but the DVD works on EVERY other player I own. Everything pretty much plays DVDs, so that's many!

So here's my problem: There's parts of this movie that have very high pitched sounds, like electronic sounds that are just sound effects in the movie. Whenever I get to those parts in this movie (maybe even other movies for all I know, I don't play many) and the sound goes quiet, like the speakers can't handle that high pitched sound.

I feel there must be something I can do about it, right? I just use the regular default DVD player application that pops up when I put a DVD in. I tried playing with that equalizer but nothing changed. Any ideas...?
