OS X Yosemite :: Keyboard Settings Keep Getting Reverted
Dec 11, 2014
I set my cap locks key to be bound as the control key. I just bought a new Mac Book Pro with a clean install of yosemite and I have noticed that system settings, in particular the keyboard modifier keys, seem to be reverting to their default inputs. It is possible this switch is to to docking and undocking the machine from my apple studio display.

A little while later I notice the MBP felt like it was running when I touched it. It was vibrating from the HD running. I didn't think much of this.
I just now tried to turn my MBP on and it wouldn't. I decide to plug it in. When it turned on it did so for about 2 seconds, turned off, then turned back on. It then took a long time to boot up. When it finally did boot, it told me that the clock was all out of whack and I noticed tons of my settings had been reverted to default. I then check the battery to see that it is charging but the level is at 1%! When I shut the MBP lid earlier to put it to sleep the battery was at least 50%.

I've connect a Microsoft keyboard to my Mac and swapped the control and commany keys in system preferences.
The weird thing is Microsoft's keyboard can't understand the swap. When I press the control key, sometimes it thinks I am pressing command and sometimes it thinks I am pressing control.

Have MacPro with dual-boot. Snow Leopard, which I'm using right now, and Yosemite, which I'm setting up and trying out. Mail is a particular issue.
I would like to have the Yosemite mail set to "mail.comcast.net" but there is no real way to do so.
When I put in my e-mail address and Comcast password, it automatically sets up an imap account, which I do not want.
I want the system to pull ALL messages off the server when I collect my mail, and store NOTHING on the Comcast mail servers.
Snow Leopard does this (of course, it's a POP account I set up) but the fine Apple developers seem to think I want to 'keep my devices synchronized' so Yosemite's Mail program chooses imap for me.
I had the test set to pull down all the messages and it did, on the imap account, so ostensibly when I rebooted into 10.6 there should have been nothing left on the server for the mail to collect - but there's all of today's messages and the junk mail waiting to be pulled down - so obviously the IMAP isn't emptying the server when I collect mail.
HOW do I get Yosemite Mail to let me setup my Comcast account on the POP settings? I checked on the Advanced settings for the Internet Accounts but it makes you set up the password *first* so goes out and checks, then automatically loads the wrong account type.
Do I take the computer offline so it cannot automatically set itself up, then enter the account info?

I just upgraded my 15" Retina Macbook Pro from Mavericks to Yosemite. I had to reset the mouse settings so I went to System Preferences and made the changes for the tracking speed and scroll direction. The changes happened immediately, however once I shut the computer down and turn it back on again, the settings are back to a default slow speed with reversed scroll direction.

Similar to the original post found here: Re: How to Change View Options for ALL Finder Windows?
I'm trying to change my finder settings across all finder windows... I tried the solution posted in the above thread but get this message in terminal. I'm not all that computer savvy when it comes to terminal so not sure what it means.

Stayed with 10.6.8 for years and had no issues, then started to see problems with Safari, websites not loading, email problems, updates no longer available etc etc.
So I used Carbon Copy Cloner to make a backup, wiped everything, then a clean install of Yosemite. All went very well indeed!
I have 3 accounts setup on the one iMac (2011 model i7 Quad core). 2 of these accounts work perfectly, but the thing which is driving me nuts is on the 3rd account. I set the mouse tracking speed and remove the scroll direction tick, but whenever I log out, it resets itself! Every time I log in, I have to go to System Prefs and reset it all over again!
The solution is to setup another account of course, and copy all files over, but I'd prefer to work through this issue to find out whats causing it if I can.

I'm running OS X 10.10.1 on a 2010 Mac Pro with a Bose Companion 5 USB sound system. Everything works great and as expected except when I restart the Mac Pro. The sound settings switch off the Bose speakers and reverts back to the internal speakers of the computer. I have to go in everytime and reset it back to the Bose sound system. I never had this problem using Mavericks.

I have (Yosemite) Mail linking into BT. I have a problem that occurred with Mavericks and continues with Yosemite Mail. Mail works fine for a month or two then goes wrong... almost a pattern! Usually I put it right by deleting the account and set it up again and it works for a while. I am so frustrated because I do not understand the intricacies of software and programming. Now it is refusing to send emails in both my and my wife's account. iCloud works (after I deleted and set it up again). But I need our BT separate accounts. Is there a way of deleting all the old bits and pieces of files that might be 'remembering' bad settings and starting again?

change mouse settings from default for user Aswitch to user Bswitch back to user A changes to mouse settings have been wiped and the default mouse settings restored..I've tried various things with user A like logging off entirely, rebooting, even making other changes in the settings that require an admin password in the hope that this might force some sort of admin override

I have a G5 that was on 10.5.5. Then went back to 10.4 by doing an "Archive and Install" from a 10.4 install DVD (the one that one buys from Apple & is good for all computers). But now my applications will not work properly. My CS3 apps have reverted back to trial versions. FCP won't open. Disk Utilities says this version of OS doesn't support it.

I am unable to change "Energy Saver" settings in System Settings using Yosemite 10.10.1. In particular, I want to uncheck the "Put Hard Disks to Sleep" option.
I can click on the option and then click close. But when I go back into "Energy Saver" the checkbox is ticked again.
I have tried both an SMC and PRAM reset and the problem persists.

Are the led's under the keys auto controlled due to the amount of light in the room? I use my MacBook pro on battery most of the time and every time I go to turn up the keyboard brightness its in a different place. I want to set it to be at a specific brightness when its plugged in and when its running on battery, at a lower brightness but the same every time. I want to be able to have settings for the led brightness.

I use change my icons, at least the dock ones to make them look uniform. I usually manually change them, (copy, ctrl+i, paste) but for ical I had a problem. I did the normal routine and it did work. It changed the icon to what I wanted, until I opened the program. Then it changed it back to the default icon. So I used Candybar to do the samething, and the same thing happened. I did this for about 20 icons or so, and they all changed, except for ical. Well it did change initally but when I opened it, it reverted.

I created a site with iweb 08. I did it from scratch, because when I tried to load the site that was created from 06, it totally messed up everything. I have a couple custom fonts that I used, and it looks great in iweb, but when I view the published website on another computer, the fonts are completely different, like they reverted to default. I finally got everything to work ok with 08, and now I have a font problem. If it makes a difference, I'm not using a .mac account.

If you have seen my other thread in the "Mac basics and help" forum this is how it all started: [URL]. I've worked out that now both of my keyboards have some how changed setting to only let me type with a set of numbers. If you look in this pic V yu will see blue numbers on the letter keys: (forget about the arrow thing found this on google). You see the numbers that are also on the keys? 6 being on O 3 on L. This is now how my key boards are set up. Does anyone know how to unset them?

I've noticed that the system preferences for the keyboard backlight settings only seem to be partially working on my Mac Book Pro 2011. This might be since I updated to 10.7.4 or applied the firmware update EFI 2.7; I can't say which since I did the two close together. The keyboard still lights up and the slider that sets the time-out for illumination still works as do the F5 and F6 keys to dim and brighten the light. However, the preference setting seem to completely ignore the tick box to select whether you want the illumination function on or off.

When I try to select this option in system preferences, my system just hangs indefinitely. I was considering getting the four finger gestures up and running, but I had only thought about it and did not actually start doing anything to the computer. Maybe they are reading my mind and punishing me? It has been like this for a couple of days through multiple reboots.

I have a rev. A MBA and it does two odd things. If I set the display to full brightness, then power down and back up, the display doesn't return to full brightness. I have to go into the display preferences pane and move the slider a fraction of an inch to return to full brightness. The "adjust brightness for ambient light" and "reduce brightness on this power source" are disabled, so that isn't it. Also, the MBA forgets the brightness setting for the keyboard when it is powered off and then on again. As best I can determine the keyboard brightness is set to a random level at power up. I've used MacBook Pros for years, so I don't think it's anything I'm doing.

Does anyone know the terminal command for toggling on/off the System Prefs for Keyboard & Mouse? I'd use it for an Automator workflow or Quickeys shortcut. The specific setting is "Use all F1, F2, etc keys as standard function keys." I and many other Cinema 4D users find ourselves needing to turn this on and off all day long, because the app uses that F8 key that the new Aluminum keyboards have coopted, but using it means losing our speaker volume / mute settings. This is in Tiger btw.

Model Identifier: MacPro3,1
Processor 2 x 2.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
Memory 16 GB 667 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM

This is the first time I've encountered this. Upon cold booting the machine it went directly to the legacy Mac OS X Server login screen from before the upgrade to Mavericks. It would not let me login with current credentials. I had no choice but to hard power off. It returned to normal operation on restart.
It could be a possible bug.

Since I've installed yosemite on my Macbook Pro, when starting up my keyboard doesn't light up. After I type in my password then the keyboard lights up. Prior to yosemite as soon as the area for typing in my password came up my keyboard was lit so I could see the keys in the low morning light just to sign on.

I have a brand new MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2014). Shipped with Yosemite pre-installed, the version I have is 10.10.1 . I don't have any software installed except Google Chrome, so it is clean/new OS.
I noticed sometimes the keyboard and trackpad become completely unresponsive after waking up the laptop from sleep. Happened several times, the last time it happened I could not reset PRAM or SMC as keyboard was unresponsive even after restarting or shutting down so I had to Re-Install OS.
Right now I have the laptop next to me, again the keyboard and trackpad are unresponsive after wakeup from sleep, and I did SMC reset but did not work. Trying to reset PRAM or go into Recovery mode .. etc, it is not responding to the keyboard, as it is unresponsive at that point as well.
What should I do ? How can I tell if it is Hardware or Software problem ? I ran the apple test diagnostics test and there was no problem reported. And I am not able to install Mavericks because it is shipped with Yosemite pre-installed so it is not allowing me to downgrade.

How can I add characters to the list of special characters that come up when holding a key? For example, I used to be able to hold the 's' key and when the menu came up I could press 1 for the Turkish 'Ş' character. Now that I have updated to Yosemite, it seems that it has disappeared.
