I'm trying to change my finder settings across all finder windows... I tried the solution posted in the above thread but get this message in terminal. I'm not all that computer savvy when it comes to terminal so not sure what it means.
I'm trying to set it so that all finder folders have to view property 'Snap to grid' enabled... I've done it before, but can't remember how to on my new MBP.

I can click on the option and then click close. But when I go back into "Energy Saver" the checkbox is ticked again.Â
I have tried both an SMC and PRAM reset and the problem persists.Â

I want to change the settings for Parallels 4, because when I go to configure, it shows that it is currently only using 512MB of ram, and 128MB of video ram. However, I can't change the settings because it is grayed out, so I cant move any sliders...
View 3 Replies View RelatedIs there (or will there ever be) any way to change the white default color of finder windows in column and list views? Or is there a 3rd party app? You can change them in icon view but that's the only view I never use. My eyes get so tired staring at white all day. If I could make all my windows dark grey I could work longer, better, happier. Would also love to make the Mail app dark.

I have had my MacBook Pro now for a little over 2 yrs and I was very frustrated I could not change any print options in any application. I know that the Triangle button expands print options screen but when I do, I have only two print choices. It gave me Standard or Page Attributes in Office and any other App it is Standard and Last used settings. I can't print in Draft, Best or other setting because it does not even give them as a choice. I have two high end color photo printers, Canon i9900 and Epson Photo series and an old HP830 series. Any app I tried to print from and the same thing. I tried to capture the options on the choices but it would not grab that part of the image but here is my screen shot. I searched many forums and I still get the same answer so something else is not letting me change things so I figured best to ask since I am a 20 year win user now switched to Mac. Well right after I posted this question, my wife found the answer. I never though to check the application NAME in the print setting screen. Example, in the screenshot I am using Preview. I never thought to hit the up/down arrow next to the Preview label and wouldn't you know, that is were the quality and several other settings were. I felt pretty stupid that it took 2 years to figure this out but if I posted the answer maybe someone else will not have to take as long as I did to change their print quality!
View 1 Replies View RelatedI was using my MBP when I noticed that the display (the built in one) looked a little washed out. To make sure my color profile was set to the correct one, I opened up the display panel in System Preferences. The moment I opened it, the display snapped back to its regular appearance. As far as I can tell, it goes into the washed out version after going to screensaver and coming back, and going into display prefs is the only way to restore it. Anyone seen this before or know how to keep it from doing this?

I just bought a new Mac Book Pro with a clean install of yosemite and I have noticed that system settings, in particular the keyboard modifier keys, seem to be reverting to their default inputs. It is possible this switch is to to docking and undocking the machine from my apple studio display.

Have MacPro with dual-boot. Snow Leopard, which I'm using right now, and Yosemite, which I'm setting up and trying out. Mail is a particular issue.Â
I would like to have the Yosemite mail set to "mail.comcast.net" but there is no real way to do so.Â
When I put in my e-mail address and Comcast password, it automatically sets up an imap account, which I do not want.Â
I want the system to pull ALL messages off the server when I collect my mail, and store NOTHING on the Comcast mail servers.Â
Snow Leopard does this (of course, it's a POP account I set up) but the fine Apple developers seem to think I want to 'keep my devices synchronized' so Yosemite's Mail program chooses imap for me.Â
I had the test set to pull down all the messages and it did, on the imap account, so ostensibly when I rebooted into 10.6 there should have been nothing left on the server for the mail to collect - but there's all of today's messages and the junk mail waiting to be pulled down - so obviously the IMAP isn't emptying the server when I collect mail.Â
HOW do I get Yosemite Mail to let me setup my Comcast account on the POP settings? I checked on the Advanced settings for the Internet Accounts but it makes you set up the password *first* so goes out and checks, then automatically loads the wrong account type.Â
Do I take the computer offline so it cannot automatically set itself up, then enter the account info?Â

I just upgraded my 15" Retina Macbook Pro from Mavericks to Yosemite. I had to reset the mouse settings so I went to System Preferences and made the changes for the tracking speed and scroll direction. The changes happened immediately, however once I shut the computer down and turn it back on again, the settings are back to a default slow speed with reversed scroll direction.Â

Stayed with 10.6.8 for years and had no issues, then started to see problems with Safari, websites not loading, email problems, updates no longer available etc etc. Â
So I used Carbon Copy Cloner to make a backup, wiped everything, then a clean install of Yosemite. All went very well indeed!Â
I have 3 accounts setup on the one iMac (2011 model i7 Quad core). 2 of these accounts work perfectly, but the thing which is driving me nuts is on the 3rd account. I set the mouse tracking speed and remove the scroll direction tick, but whenever I log out, it resets itself! Every time I log in, I have to go to System Prefs and reset it all over again!Â
The solution is to setup another account of course, and copy all files over, but I'd prefer to work through this issue to find out whats causing it if I can.Â
I'm running OS X 10.10.1 on a 2010 Mac Pro with a Bose Companion 5 USB sound system. Everything works great and as expected except when I restart the Mac Pro. The sound settings switch off the Bose speakers and reverts back to the internal speakers of the computer. I have to go in everytime and reset it back to the Bose sound system. I never had this problem using Mavericks.Â

quick question. How do I set global finder settings? I like my finder windows to be sorted by kind, that way they are alphabetical but folders and files arent mixed in the list. I know I can use "show view options" to do this, but I have to do that for each folder seperately. How do I access the global settings? Google, search here, and OSX search haven't found anything.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have (Yosemite) Mail linking into BT. I have a problem that occurred with Mavericks and continues with Yosemite Mail. Mail works fine for a month or two then goes wrong... almost a pattern! Usually I put it right by deleting the account and set it up again and it works for a while. I am so frustrated because I do not understand the intricacies of software and programming. Now it is refusing to send emails in both my and my wife's account. iCloud works (after I deleted and set it up again). But I need our BT separate accounts. Is there a way of deleting all the old bits and pieces of files that might be 'remembering' bad settings and starting again?

Probably a simple answer, but everytime I click view in colums, everytime I close out of finder it forgets my settings and goes back to the other setting.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI've been customizing my folders using the View Options window in each folder separately, and I was wondering if there was an application or script that would change my view options (font sizes, icon size and spacing, background image, etc) for ALL folders, on a system-wide level.
I know there has to be a way to do it, but every time I try, I only change settings for the parent folder. Sorta 2 part question, I guess... How do I change the text underneath "Macintosh HD" such as "500GB, 457GB free." I know it's a string that can be changed, but I've forgotten where it's located.

View 1 Replies View RelatedIt really annoys me that in Finder (in Icon View), when I'm in a given directory and I enter a sub-directory, when I go back up to the original directory, the window scrolls to the top.
Sometimes it doesn't do this, but the majority of the time, it does. There must be a setting somewhere that controls this. Finder is obviously not just arbitrarily choosing which way to do things.
It's really annoying, though, because if I'm doing something in a directory with many subdirectories, I have to find my last place, as I tend to go through things in alphabetical order.
It may sound mad, but I miss the ubuntu look. Is there anyway possible by either the use of applications or changing settings that I can make my mac look a little like ubuntu (all orange and stuff). I'm running os x 10.5 btw, and there doesn't seem to be much way to customize it as far as I can see.

If Finder has been running for a while, and I have a number of finder windows open, when I option-command-w, the Finder crashes and then restarts with all the windows that just closed.Â
When I close a finder window, the finder menu disappears and then reappears along with the finder window. It looks like finder is crashing and restarting. This started happening after I downloaded a pdf and put it in a folder. Maybe there is a bug in the way finder is rendering the image of the pdf file at the top of the finder window?Â
How can I restore normal behavior of finder?

Over the years my finder windows have been set to different colors, font sizes and so on. When I make a change I select the make default box in the show view options, but they never default except for that one finder window. I have erased com.apple.finder.plist and just for fun the com.apple.sidebarlists.plist but can not get the finder to go to a true default. Is there another plist that I am missing?

I am on OS Version 10.10.1 (14B25). Whenever I click on the green dot in the upper left corner of an open window, the window expands to take up the entire Desktop. Even more bothersome, the window expands to the top of the frame, covering up the Finder menus. Â
I need those menus. I have found by experimentation that waving the cursor around in the upper-left corner of the display can bring the Finder menus back into view. But that is only temporary. As soon as I move the cursor back to the content of the window, I lose the Finder menus again. The only way I can get the Finder menus to remain visible is to close the window that I am working in. Doing so defeats the whole purpose in clicking the green dot.  Â
Is there some preference somewhere that I can use to turn off this annoying new feature of Yosemite?

Anyway I can control the fans for my Powerbook G4 so it starts to pump air out at an earlier time than 63C? I tried G4 fan control but it never saved the settings (was at default after restart) and not sure if it even worked.
