How can I add characters to the list of special characters that come up when holding a key? For example, I used to be able to hold the 's' key and when the menu came up I could press 1 for the Turkish 'Ş' character. Now that I have updated to Yosemite, it seems that it has disappeared.

I have a problem writing documents in Spanish and it is that I don't know how to use Spanish special characters and symbols used in MS Word, Text Edit or any other text editor in a Mac computer. I have to send status reports in Spanish to my Hispanic customers and I need to learn this before my work accumulates up to a point where I won't be able to catch up.
On a Windows PC it is relatively easy by using a combination of the ALT key and a three digits number that correspond to the letter and then it appears. How do I do it in a Mac?
When I go up to Edit > Special characters, the usual screen with all the special characters does not show up. Is there another way to bring up the special characters menu? And is there a chance that I accidentally disabled it somehow?

When replacing pre-populated (untitled folder) or selected text in Finder, Safari, etc. a special character is added about 1/3 of the time. You can't see it in Finder, but it does show in file names viewed in Terminal, in URLs (only after you hit enter and Safari gets confused) in the file name at the top of certain apps, or on PCs.

I am trying to hunt down a mystery for a friend using her macbook air (Lion).
She is trying to add special characters (accents, etc.) to words in a MIcrosoft Word 2008 document.
Sometimes she can hold the key, and the special characters menu will pop up. Sometimes she will get the "old" repeating letter (eeeeeeeeeeeee). I tried to look at everything I could think of, but there seems to be no earthly reason why it does it sometimes but not all the time.
The only explanation I could guess at was that it was Word 2008 and Lion (and not Word 2011).

I have a late 2008 uMBP 15 inch and in safari, regardless of using the integrated graphics card or the higher end card, when I press apple t for a new tab the computer hangs for at least 10 seconds then once it finally loads the top sites page it appears all scrambles for a second, then it works normally.
My second problem is that my hinge is very loose. I can't hold the laptop at 45 degree angle without the screen falling down and closing. Will apple fix this?
Whenever I open my mac mini it comes up with the same message "You need to restart your computer hold down the power button or press restart" in four different languages.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have just shipped my Mac Mini to its new home and I've had reports that the panic error is appearing on boot up: "You need to restart your computer. Hold down the power button for several seconds or press the Restart Button." This screen appears on the blue window just after the grey apple screen has disappeared and does not get as far as the desktop at the same point each time. We have tried to reinstall mac OS from the original install disk but holding the "C" Key or the "Option" Key down on restart doesn't boot from disc. Is there a way you can view the Kernel Panic log before you boot into Mac OS so we can try and pin point the source of this problem. I'm wondering if this could have been the result of the shipping that has caused some hardware to come loose.

My keyboard isn't working properly, when I press the letter 'o' it shows the symbols 'oty' and when I press 'N' it brings up a new page of whatever I'm on. Also when I press 'L' it shows the copyright symbol followed by a dot and what looks the the letter 'L' floating on its side. Can someone please help with this? I set my cap locks key to be bound as the control key. I just bought a new Mac Book Pro with a clean install of yosemite and I have noticed that system settings, in particular the keyboard modifier keys, seem to be reverting to their default inputs. It is possible this switch is to to docking and undocking the machine from my apple studio display.

Since I've installed yosemite on my Macbook Pro, when starting up my keyboard doesn't light up. After I type in my password then the keyboard lights up. Prior to yosemite as soon as the area for typing in my password came up my keyboard was lit so I could see the keys in the low morning light just to sign on.

I have a brand new MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2014). Shipped with Yosemite pre-installed, the version I have is 10.10.1 . I don't have any software installed except Google Chrome, so it is clean/new OS.
I noticed sometimes the keyboard and trackpad become completely unresponsive after waking up the laptop from sleep. Happened several times, the last time it happened I could not reset PRAM or SMC as keyboard was unresponsive even after restarting or shutting down so I had to Re-Install OS.
Right now I have the laptop next to me, again the keyboard and trackpad are unresponsive after wakeup from sleep, and I did SMC reset but did not work. Trying to reset PRAM or go into Recovery mode .. etc, it is not responding to the keyboard, as it is unresponsive at that point as well.
What should I do ? How can I tell if it is Hardware or Software problem ? I ran the apple test diagnostics test and there was no problem reported. And I am not able to install Mavericks because it is shipped with Yosemite pre-installed so it is not allowing me to downgrade.

After a few hours of uptime, certain keys on my keyboard stop working and I have to reboot: both command keys and the zero key. Sometimes, after the computer has been in sleep a long time, the keyboard and mouse don't respond at all. I can get the computer to wake up again by pressing the power key, but the mouse and keyboard don't respond, so I can't do anything except hard boot. This problem first appeared after the update to 10.10.1. (I'm dealing with it right now, so I'm getting the '0' through the keyboard viewer, but there's no way to access that from the password screen.)

I changed my Mac to log in with my iCloud password, which I also recently changed. This is when things went... crazy.
• Upon reboot, my Keychain password will not work. No password I give Keychain will work.
• Safari just sits there with the beachball. Force-quit shows Safari as "Not Responding."
• Launchpad will not accept keyboard input
I've repaired the drive and preferences. No change.
For what it's worth, another account on the same machine does NOT exhibit these issues.

I've read tutorials on it, Ive downloaded it, played with it, uninstalled it. I have to be missing something here. To me it looks just like a more complicated way to get to programs and things you want. What am I missing? What does it really do? I don't get why everyone is so in love with this program. Everything online I find about it gushes about how great it is but always ends up boiling down to "it helps you open applications faster".
