After installing the combo update on my 5,1 MacBook, my machine upon restart or shutdown, will merely close the menu bar and remove the desktop icons but the dock remains open. After a couple minutes, a message will pop up stating that which ever program was shut down last will not allow the restart or shutdown. Top however doesn't report the program as running. I repaired disk permissions.

I have just now received my purchased 13.3 inch Macbook Pro model, with BTO 4Gigs RAM, and 250 HDD.
I opened the Macbook pro, and it worked just fine. First thing I did was to enable the WiFi, perform a software update, and update the system using Software Update with the combo update to Snow Leopard 10.6.2 (it was 10.6).
Immediately after performing the update and restarting, the computer crashed on startup 3-4 times, and still refuses to boot. It appears this is a kernel panic, with the first line saying "Panic Version mismatch between Kernel and CPU " and some other things like the version of the system and darwin, and the CPU model.
I booted from the DVD without problems, and performed a Disk Repair (which found no problems) and a repair permissions (which also found no errors).
Strange thing: When I selected the "startup disk" application I selected my internal HDD but it displayed 10.6 instead of the recently applied 10.6.2!!
Rebooting still crashes the computer, with the same kernel panic.
Freshly installed Snow Leopard 10.6.3.
Tried through Software Update, downloading solo via webpage....each time I get verification falied and/or invalid checksum when launching solo.
i am a teacher in a school where we have been told that every student must shut down each MacBook or iMac when finished. It is not unusual for 6-8 classes a day to do this. I have said putting the MacBooks to sleep would be better for them. Some of the laptops are taking 5 minutes to restart. Can't find data from Apple to support my concerns.
View 5 Replies View RelatedIt's been happening for a while now and I had hoped 10.5.3 would fix. When I choose to restart or shutdown, 90% of the time it hangs on grey screen after logging out and I have to hold down power button to shutdown. No apps hanging. Also have problem where when I open the cover to bring my MBA out of standby mode, I'll be presented with the logon screen. I'll type my password and my screen goes blank like it's gone back to sleep but the power light is fully lit. Have to close cover, wait till it goes on standby, then open cover to bring up password logon again. Should I reinstall OS X again?

I type username and password as requested and hit shutdown or return and it just does nothing, the username and password box remains on the screen. I have just run Disk Warrior through the machine to no avail.

whenever I use my macbook for some reason my MBP will hang on shut down when I use it for a while, and I have to do a hard shut down. but after I do the hard shut down I can restart it after that and it will be at the normal time.
Could it some how be related to my bell internet stick or extended time with out shutting down( 1-2 days on average)?
I have MBP 15" 2011 running Lion 10.7.3. When I try to restart, shutdown, or logout it does nothing. No warnings and it doesn't freeze.

I have an issue with my 13" Macbook pro mid 2010 OSX 10.9.3. It won't boot after restart, but boots normaly after shutdown and start again.
Few months ago my primary sdd Corsair hard disk (I have 2 hdds. Replaced the original with the CD-rom) which I installed 2 years ago, stopped working. Gave the macbook to authorised service provider in my country and they said I need a new hdd and a new hard drive cable. The ssd was still under warranty, so Corsair replaced it with a new one. They gave me SATA3 instead of SATA2 (which at first I didn't noticed). Later they said they don't have SATA2 anymore. Also replaced the broken cabel.
Now it's working. If you start it after normal shutdown, it boots normally. But if you restart it it won't boot at all. The apple keep spinning and the forbidden sign appears. I tried PRAM and SMC reset. Nothing
What should I do? Can the use of SATA3 instead of SATA2 hdd lead to some issues with my macbook? I can try to find and buy new SATA2 sdd hdd but they are expensive and I'm not sure it will fix the restarting issue.
I've always wonder this, Does anyone know if the combo update has a security update as well?
View 3 Replies View RelatedDuring start up I get the apple logo and everything boots although it takes forever, the apple logo goes away screen goes blue, and sometimes it loads to the login screen about 10 mins later, and sometimes it just sits there. - During restart, it shuts down makes all the appropriate sounds, screen goes dark, and all you hear is a residual humming from the inside under the keyboard, and then never restarts. (You have to force shutdown) - Same story as above with both shutdown, and sleep.
The only way to get it to load successfully is in safe mode, but even then it still wont do the above problem correctly, it just at least starts.
- Resetting the PRAM, Holding power button for 5 seconds until repeating flashes, I've tried reinstalling snow leopard 5 times, I've checked for updates, I've repaired disk permissions, I've repaired the disk, I've even tried stepping the OSX back down to 10.3(The original operating software for this MB)

My 2009 MBP would have problems shutting down or restarting. On a shutdown, it would appear to off, black screen and no lights, but if you tried pressing the power button nothing happened. I had to hold the power button to turn it completely, then press it again to startup.Restarts had the same behaviour, it would get to a black screen and I would have to hold the power button and then press it again to startup.I ended up taking this MBP back for another problem, and they replaced it with a 2011 MBP (since I had recurring logic board that failed a few times).Anyway, I swapped the SSD from my old mac into the new one, and I have the exact same behaviour!!Seems to be some corrupt settings or something. So I booted from a Mac installation disc, wiped my hard drive and reinstalled the OS, then I restored from Time Machine, and unticked the option to restore settings.I want to also add, that my backlit keyboard isn't working either.I tried resetting the SMC, but the power light on my charger didn't cycle orange/green, so I'm not sure if it worked. I tried multiple time, following Apple instructions.I also reset the PRAM, which did work.

I just updated now to MAC OX X Lion to 10.7.4 on my 2011 MB AIR. I noticed upon restart or shutdown, it takes around 15 seconds now. Before the update, it just takes less than 2 seconds to restart/shutdown.

Recently I got a new MacBook Pro. I updated it to the latest version of lion. Whenever I wanted to change my desktop background, it would change immediately no problem but once I shut down or restarted my mac, it would revert back to the original background. Somewhere I read that by deleting com.apple.desktop.plist this problem could be solved. I did that and bingo it solved the problem! But since I am a newbie i would like to know is it fine to do so and what (if any) effects it could have on my mac?

View 1 Replies View RelatedRight after I ran the 10.5.5 Combo update my computer went haywire. I'm getting random -50 errors left and right. All kinds of stablility problems are showing up. I can't make folders. I can't copy and paste. I tried to download something from safari and it said I didn't have enough disk space even though I have over 250GB free. Then when I try to restart I spun on the grey screen for hours. Tried to reinstall the OS from the disk and it failed. Lost a lot of files. I switched users and my external HDs unmounted and couldn't come back. It's gotta be the update right? I heard of about 4 other people who use their computers in completely different fashions who all had the same or close variations to these problems when they installed the new updates.
Anyone experiencing this or am I crazy?
Is it worth it? Are all the bugs out? Pros/Cons?

Ive tried the repair disk permissions and have downloaded the update directly from the apple site. I keep gettting this message (with a red exclamation mark):
"You cannot install Mac osx update combined(intel) on this volume. This volume does not meet the requirements for this upddate"

I've been having some issues with Mail (long story- anything after an image or an attachment in a message I create is showing up as a .htm or .txt file) and one suggestion that someone made was to download the 10.6.2 combo update and try to reinstall it to ensure that everything is all up to snuff.
Strangely, when I DL'd the combo update and tried to run it, my hard drive showed up with an exclamation mark and said I couldn't install it. Can one typically install the update on itself?
Also, is there any chance in heck that it will actually make a difference (friendly wagers here are fine, as I don't expect anyone to know for sure)?
