OS X Yosemite :: Where Is Application Data Stored

Dec 11, 2014

i need to do a manual backup and fresh Yosemite install.  Is there a common folder where third party application data is stored?  For example, a game I may have been playing? I'm backing up the user/my name folder.  I plan on reinstalling the actual apps.

About This Mac / Storage -> 65GB worth of backups. How do I find these backups and delete them. I am in need for space to download a program.

Also, I just deleted a program which is 60GB but only 30GB was deleted form my computer. I search the program name and files and nothing came up, is there a place these files are hiding which I can then delete.

OS X :: In Which Folder Application-related Settings And Information Stored

Jun 16, 2010

I'm doing a clean install of Snow Leopard (the iMac's been acting out a little too much lately, and it's been lagging, even after I upgraded the RAM), so I want to do a clean install.

I'm backing up the information using Time Machine, but I don't want to use Time Machine as a way to get my information back. I'm merely doing the back-up so I can go in manually and copy whatever information I want to keep from the backup folder to where they ought to be now.

I'm asking specifically about application-related settings and information. Things like keys and registration information. Also, as far as my iPhone is concerned, I'd rather not have to go through a whole thing, and since I'll be rebuilding the iTunes library as it was, I would like for the iPhone to not ask to do a clean-install, so if I could copy the back-up information for it as well so that it recognizes the computer that would be swell.

Mac Pro :: Arrange Data Stored On A Separate Drive?

Jun 23, 2012

I am re-organizing after a move to mac and decided to move all my data to a raid array while keeping my OS's on a separate drive.

i am seeing that this is more difficult in practice than it sounds.

for instance, i have all sorts of folders such as Music or Screenshots or Pictures or Movies etc, etc, etc and i am wondering if I should just keep ALL of this dat on the separate drive and RE-POINT all my software that uses a database to that folder on the other drive.

OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Populate Newly Installed ITunes And IPhoto With The Imported Data Stored Under The 'old' Username?

Jun 9, 2012

My MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.8) was going slow. I decided to reinstall OSX. All my data was backed up to my compatible external HD. I then erased my MacBook HD, and reinstalled OSX off the install disc and bundled applications disc.  I went through the steps to set up the administrator account, and did all the other things in the instal process.  I then did all necessary software updates. When all that was complete, I connected my external HS and opened migration assistant, and imported all the data from the latest backup.  I now find that all my backed up data from before is under a different user account - named as in the old OSX set up. How do I populate my newly installed iTunes and iPhoto with the imported data stored under the 'old' username? Shouldn't this have happened automatically?

OS X Yosemite :: Error / System Has Run Out Of Application Memory

Dec 3, 2014

My MacBook air keeps slowing down and giving me the error message "Your system has run out of application memory".  I end up having to force quit all applications and reboot, which fixes the problem for 10 - 15 minutes and then it starts over again.

I am on the road for work and won't be able to get to an Apple store until next week, but this is creating a gigantic headache for me.  I found a bunch of threads on this same topic for Snow Leapord, but nothing pertaining to Yosemite.

OS X Yosemite :: Can't Open Application Because Of Force Quit

Dec 10, 2014

This has happened multiple times now since installing Yosemite. The problem displayed above is that after force quitting I can't open an application all. Even though it's not running anymore, as proven by the black dot that would be under the icon if it was. I've had this happen with 2 different applications: Steam and Google Chrome.

My system Specs are:

-2.5 GHz Intel Core i5
-Memory 4gb 1600 MHz DDR3

OS X Yosemite :: Remove Extra Application Directories

Dec 1, 2014

how does one remove an added "application" directory?  Not just delete it, but prevent the OS from always looking there, even when it's gone ? On Yosemite, I tried to be "clever" (hint: I wasn't   and move a few silly apps to a big external USB disk.  The idea was I have 1TB internal, 3TB external, and I thought to separate out some apps onto an remote disk so I can disconnect that (thus the hammer version of "now others can't run this app").   And just copying these files to /Volume/Data (the external USB3 drive) functions fine.

Mechanically, this disk shuts itself off, and it takes a good 10 seconds to wind up.  So whenever I search for an app or start an app *on the main disk*, it seems one ends up searching all "app directories" anyway (I put that in quotes because I presume that's why the disk is spinning up when I run an app that has nothing to do with my external disk).

So I decided it was silly to have those apps on the external disk because of the spinup time, experiment failed, I uninstalled the apps.   BUT the disk still seems to need to spin up before starting a new app up even though the app directory on the external disk is gone. Being primarily a linux hacker before I bought this Mac , I would say "you have /Volume/Data in your PATH".   Which is probably the case at some level.  But I'm not finding anything to this effect in the system preferences..

OS X Yosemite :: Stop Opening Multiple Instances Of Same Application

Dec 2, 2014

I am used to having graphic files on my desktop, when editing one I would simply right-click and pick "open with" > Photoshop (which is always open in its own desktop in my computer). Now out of the blue, if I do that, it loads another instance of Photoshop, which is certainly what I don't want. I can have 2, 3, 4 Photoshops running at the same time and editing the same image!

I searched but all I could find is people wanting the opposite i.e. opening multiple instances of the same app.

OS X Yosemite :: Using Apple Mail Data From Other Drive?

Dec 10, 2014

Currently, I'm using on my iMac Yosemite and on an external Thunderbolt drive Mavericks, In Yosemite I use Apple Mail, but would like to use this also under Mavericks. I often swap between these two OS because of X-Plane testing purposes.

since Apple Mail stores all mail folders on the "local" Yosemite disk, I was wondering if it's not possible to move it to another external data disk and tell Yosemite Apple Mail to go to that external data disk to retrieve all mail information. When that's possible, I can do then the same for my Mavericks Apple Mail. End result would be for me that I always have up-to-date email available either I'm working with Yosemite or Mavericks.

OS X Yosemite :: Mac Mail - Saved Messages Gone Blank Lost Data?

Dec 10, 2014

Entire email folders of mine seem to have lost all the content in them - all that remains is the heading detail on the individual emails.

It happens without much consistency -Sometimes I will use the folder, move messages to it and they will be fine, as normal,Then later on I will discover that ALL of the messages in this folder will seemingly have lost their data and gone blank. It makes no difference whether viewing in the mac mail pane or opening the message up directly. It wont happen to all folders or all subfolders

Is there a safe way of getting the messages back and preventing it happening any more?

I say 'safe' as reading through other similar threads years ago I saw suggestions about rebuilding mail boxes which others then mentioned that it completely wiped their entire mail boxes - the thought of that fills me with fear.

Im running an 2.8 Ghz i5 27" Desktop on Yosemite 10.10.1 - but it has been happening since Mountain Lion at least - Ive had this issue a few times but it seemed to be very limited and isolated, but in the last 6 months Ive noticed it happening to entire folders and I cannot let my records just evaporate like this!

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Mail Application Doesn't Keep Data Of Yahoo Mail Account

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro running OS Lion (10.7.3) and in the last two weeks I face the following problem with the Mail application and my Yahoo mail account: although the account appears in the side bar of the application and it will search for new messages when I launch the Mail app, it doesn't load any messages and I also realised that all Mailboxes of the named account are blank! The messages appear normally when I reach my account through the Yahoo page! I tried to remove and re-import the account in the Mail app, but it just worked for two days and now the Mailboxes are blank again! I have no problems with the other two mail accounts I reach through the same application (both POP accounts).

OS X :: Where Do Temporary Images Get Stored

Oct 14, 2009

I recently purchased an iMac so I can do image capturing. I had previously been using a PC and moved to the Mac. The software I have been using has a Mac and PC version. When I do my projects, it saves a temporary image file to the User's Temp directory as a jpeg on the PC. I have attempted to contact the software developers to ask them where on the Mac it stores this file and they have not gotten back to me. I am curiously if anyone can point me in the direction of where to find this temporary image file. I realize that Mac's stored images as .png not jpeg but I am getting no response from the company's devolper and I use this file for my projects.
