OS X :: In Which Folder Application-related Settings And Information Stored

Jun 16, 2010

I'm doing a clean install of Snow Leopard (the iMac's been acting out a little too much lately, and it's been lagging, even after I upgraded the RAM), so I want to do a clean install.

I'm backing up the information using Time Machine, but I don't want to use Time Machine as a way to get my information back. I'm merely doing the back-up so I can go in manually and copy whatever information I want to keep from the backup folder to where they ought to be now.

I'm asking specifically about application-related settings and information. Things like keys and registration information. Also, as far as my iPhone is concerned, I'd rather not have to go through a whole thing, and since I'll be rebuilding the iTunes library as it was, I would like for the iPhone to not ask to do a clean-install, so if I could copy the back-up information for it as well so that it recognizes the computer that would be swell.

OS X :: ITunes Settings / Preferences / IPhone Information Stored?

Mar 29, 2008

I reinstalled OSX (leopard) completely fresh, I have multiple Time Machine backups, and I do not want to restore my entire machine, I just want to pull out the files needed for iTunes to detect my iPhone(backups, and settings so the machine knows it can be connected to this machine) as being connected to the correct machine and not sync'd to another machine. I know how to browse the time machine backups I just need to know what files contain the preferences/logs/plist or whatever settings files that are needed to be replaced on my newly installed system.

ITunes :: Where Is The Album Information (title, Track Names Etc) Stored

Feb 22, 2012

I have two Macs, and on one I went through the arduous task of labelling a bunch of CD-R's I made ages ago in Itunes, and now I want to import those discs via different encoding into another computer, but don't want to have to re-enter all that info. When I put the discs into the original machine, the info is still assigned to the disc. I want to migrate that info to the other machine so I won't have to re-enter this stuff. I feel like I found this data at one point ages ago, but now I can't.

OS X :: All Related Files Of Project In Smart Folder?

Mar 13, 2008

I've been working on a lot of projects lately, and I've noticed that my files are getting scattered all over my HDD. I'm just not thinking about organization right now, I'm thinking about getting the projects done as quickly as possible. I have found the Smart Folder interesting because of this recently. My question is how can I tag my Photoshop, Illustrator, Flash, Cinema 4D, After Effects, JPEGs, PNGs, Final Cut, and any other file type to show up in the Smart Folder for the same project? This way I'll just be able to open the smart folder and bang, everything for the project is in that folder. Less worrying about organization, more focusing on work!

OS X :: Creating Folder On Dock With Related Apps

Jun 8, 2009

I'm a switcher from PC since March, and I thought I had become fairly proficient with OSX. There is a lot I don't know and never use, but I find my Mac experience to be very positive. Yesterday I discovered that I may have been using the Dock incorrectly. Here's what I did, what happened, and the obvious need for some clarification. I did not want the dock to become too busy with many app icons, so I created a folder for my favorite photo applications; Lightroom, Photoshop Elements, Bridge, and some Canon camera and printing programs. I liked the idea that I could just click on the one folder and it would fan open with all of the related apps. So, I simply dragged apps to the folder, and for months it seemed to work very well.

Yesterday I tried a Panorama feature in Photoshop Elements, and it was grayed out. So, I went to the Adobe PSE Forums and posted a message. A few very knowledgeable people answered, and we tried to troubleshoot the problem. We looked at permissions on the apps, and other stuff. At one point, I clicked on the app from within Finder, and it opened with the feature back where it belonged. I then went to the folder and by accessing there, it was gone. I'm not sure in which order this happened, but I did get a message that the app had been moved from its original location and needed to update itself. When I reported this to the export I was admonished that you can't add an app to a folder, you need to make an alias.

I trashed the folder and tried to redo it, but I recreated the same problem. So, I instead opened the applications from Finder and kept them pinned to the dock. They now work, but they clutter up the Dock. What surprised me was that in the Dock tutorials I saw on the Apple site and the other Dock related stuff I read elsewhere, it seemed as if simply dragging apps to the dock or folders on the dock was the correct procedure. If I did not do it right, what steps would I need to go through to create a folder on the Dock with related apps?

ITunes For Mac :: Doesn't Play Files Stored In Media Folder?

Aug 28, 2014

I had deleted my files from iTunes media folder, but as luckily I had the same files located in other place I just copied them to the iTunes Media but iTunes rejects to play them (in my iTunes Library). I'm only able to play them if I go through the procedure as followings: Play - "iTunes unable to open this file because the original file not found. Do you want to find it?" (or smith like that) - Find - Open  and then it plays, but I have to perform these actions with every file separately and I have quite a lot of them. Oh, and after that first popping-up window the next one appears "Would you like iTunes to find other missing files from the same location as [the file's name]?" But when I click on "Find" it says "iTunes were unable to find other missing files". Why? How do I accomplish the same task but with all my albums at once without necessity to add them one by one?  Does there some way exists to tie the tracks from my albums with original files without importing them to my iTunes library?

OS X Mountain Lion :: How To Create Application Folder In Home Folder

Aug 29, 2014

I'm using MacBook Pro Early 2011 model with Mountain Lion (10.8.5).

I recently noticed that there was an application folder in my home folder (the folder with your username), but that application folder had been empty. I remember I used to be able to access to my applications from that folder, but not anymore.

Since the folder was empty, I deleted it before doing further research.

After deleting the empty application folder from the home folder, I looked up and some said the application folder in the home folder and the application folder in Macintosh HD are two different folders. I don't know what it means, but I would like to have an application folder with applications in my home folder. Is this possible? or should I just make an Alias folder and put it in my home folder?

OS X :: Unable To Connect To Internet / Settings Changed By Another Application

Mar 15, 2010

I am connected to the internet via a belkin N+ router..... this is in turn connected to an adsl modem...I am having no problems with the signal to the router but at least four times a day my internet disappears....

When I run Network Diagnostics hey presto, your internet is working fine....The only things I have changed recently was that as I am running osx 10.4.11 I was having that issue where you couldn't access Network in sys pref, it kept saying "your settings have been changed by another application", I found a solution on here whereby you delete the plist prefs and rebuild them... That worked a charm but now I'm wondering is this connected in some way....

or...

I got software from the makers of the belkin N+ wireless usb dongle chip that came with my router (belkin don't provide osx support but said that I could get a utility from the chip makers) I installed this but it never worked so uninstalled it, and ran disk utility and safe boot and pram and fsck (everything I could think of)

I only have one location in network, and airport is the only active network port

any ideas...????

System:

imac G5 20" | osx 10.4.11 | belkin N+ router | airport extreme card

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Default Application Settings Loses On Restart Or LaunchServices

Jul 2, 2012

After doing this tutorial: url... I have a problem with default application settings (file  association). In other words, file function "Open with" is empty. I chose default app for specific file type, do function "change all" (or just start specific application) and everything works fine. Files are associated whit that app. But after restar (or shutdown) every association is reset to none (open whit also empty). FileVault is off.So after restart I must to associate files whit programs manual, or launch all programs.

What I tried: Deleting com.apple.LaunchServices.plist - no help Script run in Terminal: /System/ Library/ Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchS ervices. /Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -seed - works, restores default applications and Open with list (but only till restart)MAINTENANCE app- works after first restart, after second restart the same problem

OS X :: View Settings For Each Folder?

Dec 11, 2008

I've seen this in the Apple store... different folders can remember different view settings.

On my MBP (10.5.5) different folders can remember their own settings like icon size and spacing, as well as file arrangement and sorting. But the view settings (icon, list, columns, cover flow) do not differ per folder... if you switch in one folder, every folder will have that view setting.

I've been customizing my folders using the View Options window in each folder separately, and I was wondering if there was an application or script that would change my view options (font sizes, icon size and spacing, background image, etc) for ALL folders, on a system-wide level.

I know there has to be a way to do it, but every time I try, I only change settings for the parent folder. Sorta 2 part question, I guess... How do I change the text underneath "Macintosh HD" such as "500GB, 457GB free." I know it's a string that can be changed, but I've forgotten where it's located.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: "Mail Can't Open Because You Don't Have The Necessary Permissions To Change The Folder Where It Saves Information"

Apr 2, 2012

I am no longer able to open Mail. I get the message: "Mail can't open because you don't have the necessary permissions to change the folder where it saves information"  It then goes on to tell me where mail stores information and to go to that folder and use the Get Info window to change the privileges to Read and Write (which they already were). I authenticate, change them to Read and then back to Read and Write, click the lock and try again. Same result. I tried to take a screen shot of that window and got this message: "Your screen shot can't be saved. You don't have permission to save files in the location wherescreen shots are stored." Last night I tried to take a screen shot and got the same message. I repaired permissions in Disk Utility and there were thousands of permissions repaired.

Intel Mac :: Folder Cannot Be Found And Safari Will Not Save Any Of Settings Changes

I work for a University and the school bought me an iMac in January. Before giving it to me they had a username and password put on it so that only I could access it. I took it home for the summer and realized that the login info would only work on the school's network. To get around this I erased the account by holding down "command +S" during startup. It solved the problem and I was able to login and use the computer however now it says iTunes cannot be located and therefore cannot be used and when I use Safari it will not save any of the settings changes like changed startup pages etc. I reinstalled Lion by pressing "command + R" during startup but still encounter the same problem. how to completely erase everything and go back to factory settings?

When I activate the program it shows the correct icon, but the ? reoccurs when I turn off/on computer.

Anyway to keep the icons there without having to activate the program to show the icon? Frustrating that I turn on my computer and have "?" in my dock.
