Dec 11, 2014

I recently upgraded to Yosemite and now have to enter my password every time I boot up with I find annoying. It seems I need to disable FileVault to solve this problem but when I try I get a message ' FileVault is encrypting the data on your disk. Wait until your disk is fully encrypted before turning off fileVault'.

Software :: VPN Connects But Is Not Encrypting Data

Sep 14, 2008

Novice at VPN here, but it looks as if nothing is being encrypted when I'm connected over VPN.

Setup:Client: OSX 10.5.4, connecting to a server: OSX Server 10.5.4 via Apple's built-in VPN system.

Scenario:
I've set up OSX Server on an XSERVE to allow VPN connections.
I've set up the shared secret, and an account for logging in with.
I've set up the client machine with VPN to use that shared secret, along with that username/password account.
I've made sure to check the box "Send all traffic over VPN connection" on the client. Seems kind of silly that it's even an option, what would be the point of VPN otherwise?
Connect: Client connects to server through VPN, no problem! It authenticates and the connection timer starts and everything is grand. We are connected via VPN!
Begin packet sniffer on client machine in the terminal.
 Load a web page.
Packet sniffer reveals that everything sent and received is good old plain text - NOT encrypted - just like we were not connected via VPN.

OS X Yosemite :: FileVault Is Not Finishing

Dec 4, 2014

I have a problem with FileVault on my MacBook Air mid 2013, with yosemite 10.10.1 installed. On initial setup I turned on encrypting and it finished in an hour. But then I realized it uses too much energy and tried to turn it off, but it said the encryption is not finished and i need to connect to the power adapter. I've done it, but nothing happened. Even though the progress bar shows it's finished, I can't now turn it off.

OS X Yosemite :: Force FileVault To Stop?

Dec 4, 2014

I've got a MacBookPro that's a couple of years old, but hasn't had any problems before - and then I updated to Yosemite. Since then it's been sluggish, stuttering and with a spinning rainbow wheel every five or ten seconds. It's got to the point where it's unusable - you click, you wait, then wait, then it reacts. Sloooow.

It's a 2.4GHz Intel Core i5 model, purchased in Summer 2012. 4GB of memory - and I've deleted everything off it, all my files and any third party programmes have gone now. On a 500GB hard disk, there's 468GB free now. It's practically got bats flying around in there it's so empty.

Apple suggested a PRAM restart, then an erase & install, which I've done a couple of times. No dice. Then I saw that FileVault is running, trying to encrypt everything on the computer. It's stalled at around 20% or so, and hasn't changed for days. You can't switch off FileVault while it's encrypting, so I'm pretty stuck at the moment; I can't leave it running because it renders the computer unusable, and reinstalling won't stop FileVault either.

how to switch off FileVault while it's running, and how to disable it in future?

OS X :: Encrypting External Disk And Backup On Second External Disk

Jan 5, 2011

As I have a MBP 17" and a MBA Ultimate 11.6" I have copied all data that I need onto a 1 TB external disk and made 4 partitions on it, one for each type of data ( movies/music, data , software etc etc ). 1. I want to password lock/encrypt it yet be able to access it from both laptops as regular data would be.2. I want to create a backup of the 1 TB disk above, on to another 1 TB external disk and make it encrypted/password protected also. Maybe follow the partition structure maybe not, thats not paramount. What's the best way (apart from .dmg file) to achieve this given the data on disk in point 1 will change often as I create/edit more files.

OS X Yosemite :: FileVault Caused Mac To Stop Working

Dec 12, 2014

As soon as I enabled file vault my Mac became unusable, with the cursor being stuck on the loading icon. I left it like this for many hours thinking it was just the encryption process after coming back to my mac the next day it was still like this so I decided to shut it off. After shutting it off I tried turning it back on again. The apple logo appears with a loading bar at the bottom. It loads slowly before getting half way and stopping to show a black screen with a white circle and a line through it.

OS X Yosemite :: Change FileVault Password To Match Login

When I first setup my OSX laptop, my filevault and user login password were the same. At bootup, I only had to login once (with my username and password).I recently changed my OSX password but my filevault / disk encryption password was not changed. Now I have to login twice when I boot up (first with my old pass, then with the new one).Is there any way to change the disk encryption password so I can be in sync with my login password?I tried Disk Util > File > Change Password, but it is greyed out.

OS X Yosemite :: FileVault Encryption Is Stuck - How To Stop Or Make It Finish

Dec 2, 2014

I upgraded to Yosemite. On the setup screen after installation, I foolishly said "yes" to "would you like to use Filevault to encrypt your hard drive." Since then, it has been stuck at the encryption stage. It keeps going back and forth between "estimating time remaining" and "X days remaining"

I'm unable to turn off Filevault at this stage. It tells me it needs to finish encrypting first. When I run a system report, it shows this:

The really annoying part is that the CPU and the full-speed fan are consuming battery power like crazy. I go from 100% to 0% in less than an hour and a half. So I need to be tethered to a power outlet most of the day.

how can I stop it, or make it finish the encrypt?

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Enabling FileVault On An External Drive Without Erasing Its Data?

Jun 11, 2012

Since I activated FileVault 2 on my Mac boot drive without initializing it, I'd assume that the same thing could be done for any other drive. I've got some external drives with hundreds of GB of data which I'd like to encrypt. Disk Utility lets do it by erasing the drive and encrypting the data written afterwards.

Is there any hidden feature that allows one to convert the drive without erasing it first, like the FileVault utility did for the boot drive (even when working on it!)?

OS X Yosemite :: FileVault Encryption Paused Because It Thinks Power Adapter Not Connected

Dec 4, 2014

Was activating FileVault on a new MacBook Pro until I received a message that it paused because it thinks the power adapter is not connected...even though it was. I unplugged the power adapter for about 12 seconds and then plugged it back in. But the error message persists. FileVault hasn't completed its process and not generated an encryption / recovery key. If I reboot do I risk being unable to access my Mac?

OS X V10.7 Lion :: 420 GB FileVault Sparsebundle Fills Up Disk?

May 21, 2012

i do have an urgent problem with my macbook pro. for some days its tellingme that my startup disk is full. therefore i cleared about 14 gb of space from the 500 gb disk. next day i controlled via get info and i could literally see the space being used up again in ca 40 min. so i googled around via my phone since the mac did not show any websites anymore...

so i know now that it is not the time macine since i do not use it as also any idisk or any other backup software/hardware

i downloaded grandperspective and found this sparsebundle file of incredible 418Gb size made of many many numbered files of 8,4MB each fromca 10 different dates since i have the mac.

i am new to mac and an old dos user therefore i do not know how this bundle is designed or if i can delete files of this band folder. i googled that this file is from FileVault and therefore reconstructed everytime i log out. i do at times hard reset the mac(5secs power button) when its not as fast as i want or blocked by too great 3d files i work onold dos habit. could these be leftovers?

please please help me with this issue since i have to work and like that the beautiful mac doesnt even open up websites..

OS X V10.7 Lion :: FileVault 2 And Disk Speed Tests

Jun 23, 2012

I have had FileVault 2 enabled on my MacBook Air (late 2010) and have been running regular disk speed tests using Blackmagic.

This week I bought a new 2GHz Air with 256GB disk and ran Blackmagic, which showed impressive 453/404 MB/s speeds. All well and good. Then I switched on FileVault 2 and decided to repeat the test to see if there was any speed degredation as a result of the encryption. Now I get an error message that the Air's disk is "read only" and Blacmagic cannot run. If I had had problems on the old Air I would have assumed FV2 was the culprit.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Encrypting Time Machine Only

May 22, 2012

I would like to know whether it is possible to encrypt only my time machine backup and not my boot disk in Lion (or in Snow Leopard). I have a mid-2009 Macbook Pro and I've read that FileVault can really slow down pre-core i5/i7 systems, so I'd rather not encrypt the system HD. I'm not in a position to buy a new laptop, but I am ready to jump to Lion.

I should also ask - is this a logical thing to do? My reasoning is that I travel a lot and have to take both my laptop and my time machine external HD with me. If something happens in which I lose both, I figure that the macbook itself is reasonably secure even without FileVault since it screen locks immediately, but the Time Machine backup is an open portfolio. Plus, with the macbook, if I've lost it, I can do a remote wipe using icloud.

So, is it possible to encrypt only the time machine backup, and is this a logical thing to do?
