OS X Yosemite :: Time Machine And Backup Drive Not Recognized And Do Not Work After Update
Dec 8, 2014
After I upgraded to Yosemite, my MAC Time Machine backup drive is no longer recognized and the process freezes when I try to re-install the drive from the drive's software.

I have a MBP 13" 2009, and had a HDD fail yesterday. I have an external HDD for backups with timemachine (WD 1Tb), with daily backups.I bought a new internal hdd, plugged it in today, and when presented with the install options, I selected recover from backup. There, my drive appears (in yellow), but when pressing continue, I get a message: No system backups found.
I looked around on forums and people suggested that a normal installation should be done followed by migration assistant. When I try using migration assistant and select Time Machine backup, the next page just shows up empty with a rotating thing in the middle.
When I browse the Backups.backupdb folder, everything is there, including my last backup from Saturday. I see that I can recover my files, which obviously is the most important bit, but I would like to restore Applications, settings etc, as to not waste too much time.

I am doing a backup prior to my first ever format & reinstall. Time Machine will not allow my use of this external hard drive that I had previously used for a Time Machine backup . Time Machine says, " The backup disk is not in Mac OS Extended ( journaled) Format, which is required." how do I change it to Extended (journaled) Format?
Yes the external hard drive in question is meant for Mac.

I just got a new 256GB SSD drive for my mac, I want to import my data from time machine backup, but its larger than 256GB since it used to be on my old optical drive. How can I import my latest backup keeping out some big files on the external drive?

I've been away from the Mac world for awhile (Got a Unibody Macbook 2.0 late last year but my girlfriend liked it so much I gave it to her. Been using a Windows Laptop ever since). I just got a Unibody Macbook 2.4 recently and wanted to restore it with my old Time Machine Backup (stored on my Time Capsule) that I made in December 08. Unfortunately, Migration Assistance on my new Unibody 2.4 can only see my GF's MB and Mac Mini backups.
I access the time capsule with Finder and see my time Capsule backup file, however. Is there some way to get it to "recognize" it? Or did it get "corrupted" somehow and I'm SOL? Not too big of a deal I suppose but definitely makes me a bit less trusting of Time Machine (I held it in high regards).

I have an external hard drives with 3 partitions: 2 are TM backups of my two computers, and the other is just a file storage partition.
I am trying to migrate files onto a brand new hard drive from a TM backup. I formatted the new HD and installed OS 10.9 on it, but when I open Migration Assistant, it only recognizes the other computer's TM backup and the file storage partition, not the Macbook TM backup partition. Additionally, this partition (when I view it on my other computer) shows up with the orange USB icon rather than the green TM icon.
Does this mean my backup is corrupted? Is there a way to fix this without going back into my laptop and switching back to the old hard drive and wiping out the old backup and backing the whole thing up again?

I have a 3rd Party NAS (Iomega Home Media Network Cloud Edition 2TB) and MacBook with OSX 10.6.8. I did run a first TM full backup over Ethernet (around 240GB) because of the extremely slow transfer speed over WiFi via the AirPort. It went Ok (after several tries and reading here in the forum). Then, I disconnected my MacBook from the wired network, so futures frequently backs-up happen wirelessly, however, it seems that it did not recognize the first full back-up, asked for re-doing it again from scratch and erased my first full-backup-over-Ethernet.
I've seen that the MAC address is used as part of the sparse bundle file name; obviously, there will be a conflict here because Ethernet and AiPort do not have the same MAC address (of course !).I will run a brand new full first backup over Ethernet, but I'd like to know what do I have to do for getting it recognizable for futures backups over AirPort?

There are 3 macs:
A: an old macbook (the white one)
B: a modern macbook pro (retina)
C: another modern macbook pro (TBD)
I am giving away B now; I expect to get C in 2 months time; I keep A with me all the time.
The goal is to migrate all of the data from B to C. I have Time Machine backups of B.
Since the transition is a long time (2 months), I need to keep working on my data during this period. For this I will use A. This will generate new files, modify old ones, ...
Since A's HDD is much smaller than B's backup, I can move only part of them.
By the way, I have totally erased A and used migration assistant to restore part of my old data from B. So, when I use A now, I do it with my same account as in B (and the same I will use in C).
How do I manage my backups in such a way that, when I will get C, I can safely move all of the data I had in B plus all of the changes and modifications that I have done during the 2 month transition?
Can I just continue to use Time Machine (on A) to update the old backups? I am afraid that some mess could be created because the computers are different (before the backups were taken on B, while now on A), even the present data are different (because now A only contains a subset of the original B data, which I do NOT want to lose), the good point is that the user is the same.

I have a Mac Book Air with Yosemite installed. I also have Time Machine backing up to a Time Capsule. Plus, two other Macs are backing up to the Time Capsule. The problem I am having is that the Mac Book Air backups are not working. It keeps say "Preparing Backup" then after a while it says "Stopped". I have tried deleting the "In Progress File" but this has not worked. The other backups on the other machines seem to be working fine.

Is there a way to modify the frequency of Time Machine backups without just turning it off for a period of time. I.E., can I tell TM to backup every 3 hours instead of every hour? Running Yosemite 10.10.1 on iMac (27-inch, Late 2013).

I have a Mac Book Air that has been backing up to a Time Capsule. I do have other Macs backing up to the Time Capsule which work fine. For some reason it is saying the last backup was the 9th of November. I thought maybe this has something to do with the lack of space. So I have added another disk to the Time Machine and I am not sure whether it is backing up to this one as it is saying the "Backup is incomplete".

I am trying to organize my external storage for a new iMac with an 500G SSD drive. I have a new thunderbolt G-Raid drive and an aging Airport Time Capsule. I was thinking of storing music and pictures, as well as a Time Machine backup of the SSD, and storing a Time Machine backup of my music and pictures on the Time Capsule. Will I need to partition the G-Raid?

My time machine hasn't backed up since November 22. Every time it went for it's scheduled back-up it skipped and went to the next scheduled backup. When I tried to reconfigure the time capsule it won't let me select the disk that I would like to use for the time machine. Everything else is working fine (airport wifi at least). Here are some screenshots:

Am I understanding correctly (from reading some other discussions here) that there are issues with Time Machine back ups and Yosemite, and that it's not just me having these problems? Since I upgrade I am having major issues with wifi connection being dropped and my Time Machine hasn't performed a back up in 19 days. It looks as though it will but stalls at "preparing back up". When it finally stops I get an error message saying it can't find the disc. I've restored the Time Machine to factory settings and started over more than once but still get the same message. Am I doing something wrong or is this an Apple issue?

Each time im doing a time machine backup, the external drive does not eject, the icon becomes pale, but remains on the desktop. But when I did not just make a backup I can eject it normaly.
My disc contains two partitions, one with the backups. When my problem occurs the first partition is ejected but not the Time Machine one.
I tried to reformat the partition but the problem persists. My hard drive is a GDrive mobile usb 1 TO purchased at the apple store.

I want to upgrade my macbook pro to Yosemite (I have mavericks installed). The Apple guy recommended me to backup. So If I backup through time machine ON my Mavericks macbook, Will I be able to restore it on Yosemite after installing it ?I am asking this because time machine captures the "look" of Mavericks and Yosemite looks different. Will the (Mavericks)backup be compatible to Yosemite ?

I have this issue in both macs I own, a 2010 MBP, and a 2012 Mac mini. After I upgraded to yosemite, Time Machine will not find my backup disk. I have been using the same network attached storage drive for 4 years for time machine backups. I has worked fine with all the macs I've owned until now. I can see the disk in Finder, I can go to disk utility and mount the Time Machine disk, but when I go to Time Machine preferences and try to select the list, the disk is not listed there, even though is mounted.

My '08 Mac Pro got it's logic board replaced last week because it wasn't seeing all the RAM I had installed, and now it's not recognizing my Time Machine drive as a Time Machine drive. The drive mounts fine (internal bay 4), all the stuff is still on it, I can still read/write to other folders on the drive. When I go into Time Machine it just shows that there're no back ups. When it tries to do a backup it just says "Backup failed". I ran disc utility and repaired permissions, still no dice.

Is there a way to make a backup of your Time Machine backup on a 2nd hard drive? I want to be doubly sure that my data is backed up!Right now I get an error saying that the second hard drive isn't authorized to copy my Time Machine data from the original hard drive I have set up as my Time Machine.

I've installed SL on my Mac Pro from scratch (Clean Install). Then I created my first backup with Time Machine. (550GB) After two weeks, I found out that I could boot my machine into the 64 bits kernel. So I did. I booted with the 6 + 4 keys during startup and I've checked and I was using the 64bits kernel. Then I week later without adding no new data, I caught a time machine backup with over 350GB backup. (Which match the data on my third hard drive.)
I was wondering if by changing the kernel did Time Machine "thinks" that it is a new backup a take some files from my drives protected by the backup.

Is there a way to update a super duper clone that I have on a portable external from my Time machine backups? It would simplify my backup protocol a lot, I travel with a live clone in case my system crashes.
When I'm at home I backup tirelessly to a time machine drive connected to my server. I would love to be able to just dock my portable with my server and be able to update my clone easily.

I just did and automatic update that consisted of about 6 items, now my external hard drive is not even recognized! Long story short, Time Machine can not find my external to do a backup. I have already done all the unplugging and restarting and searching for the disk... Nothing! my external is Lit and seemingly functioning.

starting with my iMac permanently sending crash reports, unbidden and unstoppable. I started with 10.4, and I'm now on 10.6 in after repeated attempt to get a useable mac. All was well, until I included another external disk to the time machine backups. It took nearly two days, then seemingly with around 5Gb to go, it suddenly stopped and said it had finished. I logged out and went to work, coming back to find it was still locked in a plain blue screen. I left it overnight, still like it this morning, so I did a forced shutdown. It wouldn't restart. I rebooted from the 10.6 disk, but it said the hard disc was irrecoverable and I needed to erase. I erased and reinstalled, but when it came to restoring from Time Machine, it didn't recognise the backups. Checking on the backup disk it has a folder indicated it is still in a backup. If I try to enter a different backup through the Time Machine icon in the backup, it too says I can't because it's in the middle of a backup.
Is there any way I can delete this folder and get it to let me back in? I don't want to just delete it without some guidance as it's taken me weeks of reinstall just to get this far, having persuaded the likes of TurboCad to let me re-install from a download. I feel I'm on the threshold of having to start all over again. I attached a sticky (I have no apps to speak of at the moment) which had an image of the error message, showing two icons within minutes of each other, one showing a completed backup, the other a message icon stating backup in progress. I don't think the image on the sticky can be accessed...

I have an external 500gb drive plugged into my brand new Time Capsule. The 500gb drive basically stores my entire library of music and my iTunes points to this external drive.
Is it possible to have time machine backup all information on the 500gb drive to the time capsule, so encase the external drive takes a dump, I don't loose my entire music library? Maybe time machine is already doing this, I am not sure.

My time machine backup isnt working for the last few months. The backup is located on a QNAP TS-670.
I can look for the TM and the iMac see the TM, but if I start the backup, a popup comes up. "The image of the backup-volume "/Volume/TMBackup/Danielas iMac.sparsebundle" cant be accessed. (Error -1)
Maybe it is not the exact error message in english, but I hope you know what I mean. Im working on a german system.
I can access the TM-Share through the finder (share: afp://[...]).
