OS X :: Slow WiFi Speed - Downloads Are Under 20kbs?

Aug 11, 2009

around my house, even right next to my wireless router, I have a pretty slow WiFi speed - normally my downloads are under 20kbs a second (I have a hard time even watching YouTube videos). When I plug my laptop into an ethernet port, it greatly increases and I sometimes see speeds above 100kbs. I'm using a really cheap router, but I've used other routers with the same results.

MacBook Pro :: WIFI Downloading Speed Very Slow / Speed Test Shows It Is Fast

Apr 30, 2009

Sorry for the title but I couldn't think of anything better. Hopefully I'll be able to explain my problem. I have a MPR 2.53 ghz, 4 gig ram, I'm using Safari 4.04. I am using the WIFI at a guesthouse in Thailand (but I had the same issue in China, Vietnam ...). I ran a speed test and it said download 7mb/sec and upload about 1mb/sec. I have an "app" that says bandwidth in 1.3kb/sec out 1.0kbs. I thought maybe it was Safari so I downloaded and installed Firefox. firefox gives me similar speeds. When I downloaded Firefox though I had a download speed of over 1mb/sec. But as soon as it finished downloading the speed went back to around 1kb/sec. I have rebooted my MBP many times. I did some Google searches but didn't find anything helpful.

i have a 1.5 Mbps AT&T DSL connection, and multiple speed tests show a download speed of 1.2 Mbps (and 200 Kbps upload). when i download files, such as software updates from Apple, various podcasts, and even Silverlight from Microshaft, the speed is always between 140 - 160 Kbps. i contacted AT&T, and the rep said it was because of buffering by the servers i was receiving the files from. is this a reasonable explanation? is this an accurate use of the term "buffering"?

MacBook Air :: Slow Opening Apps - Slow Read Speed?

Apr 17, 2009

I'm finding my MBA rev b to be quite slow opening apps, I bought the 1.6 ghz 120gb model.

It seems like everything's rather slow to open. I have 30gb free on the hard drive, iTunes, Safari (5 tabs) TextWrangler and mail open all day.

If I ever need to go into Firefox it takes a fair while to get up and running. I ran some xbench scores and it seems very slow on the random reads, oddly it was much quicker writing to the disk than reading.

Is their anyone in the know who can confirm that this is normal? Or if not, is there anything I can do to give it a boost?

OS X :: Webpage Loading Very Slow / Slow Internet Or CPU Speed?

Oct 30, 2010

Is there a way to tell which one is slow, if anything is going slow? I have an extremely old PC which is normally ok for most things, but gets bogged down if I am doing too many things.I was so annoyed with our national real estate site after they changed the format that I wrote a letter once a long time ago.. and I was ready to let them have it again, listing all the reasons why it is so bad and so much worse than the original.

Today for the first time, I accessed the site (mls.ca) using my new iMac. It was like lightening speed, comparatively speaking.Wow, suddenly I knew why the mls people hadn't changed their new format. But then I started going to other sites.. like airmiles.ca for example, and it was slow as heck... and stalling.. etc.
How would I be able to tell whether it is an internet slowness or the computer being slow?

OS X :: Macbook Wont Connect To Wifi - Check The Downloads?

I have a white plastic late 2007 macbook running Snow Leopard. I've set it up to wake up during nights and download. Everything works fine but every now and then when my macbook wakes up from sleep it won't connect to my wifi and when I get up in the morning to check the downloads, I get disappointed. This happens at least twice a week.I need an app or an apple script which constantly monitors and ensures that Airport is always connected to wifi after macbook wakes up from sleep. Airport doesn't seem to do this automatically.

MacBook Pro :: Browser And Downloads Are Incredibly Slow

May 13, 2012

everything has been fine other than Activity monitor opening but just hanging, spinning pinwheel. There doesnt seem to be a file in library/preferences "com.apple.activitymonitor.plist" which I read could be the culprit. The main problem is that browsing and DL's have slowed to a crawl under 1mps down according to speedtest, where my phone using the same wifi access point is getting at least 5. This is for Firefox as well as Safari. Im sort of at my wits end here and willing to just wipe and start over but i dont have the disks. This seems like the sort of behaviour that occured on my PC when i got a Trojan or loaded up with Spyware. I did do an Avast and Clamxav scans to be sure. Im sure Ill find more to annoy you fine people with in the future but for now it would take far to long for the web page to open.

MacBook Air :: It Slow Upon Downloads After Main-board Replacement

Jul 6, 2012

I use a 4 yr. old MBA, the non wedge style thing with poor connectivity (just one USB connector). I am the only user and the MBA 98% of the time is hooked up to a LED cinema display (also about 4 yrs old) and connected to the LAN via the USB hub at the cinema display/Apple USB-Ethernet connector (4yrs. old, as you guessed). Recently, I had a memory defect which forced me to have the mainboard replaced (RAM is soldered to the main board with MBA's).

Since I got it back, the MBA is somewhat slow. It is extremely slow if I download large files via the ethernet/USB connection. Both cores of the CPU are loaded at at least 50%, the MBA practically does not take mouse commands any longer and opening windows or such is extremely slow. Basically you can have a few coffees during downloading! Would a reinstallation of the OS perhaps help? (10.7.4 currently) I also wonder if I would reinstall the OS from, e.g., the recovery partition, now would this delete all the programs I've installed (quite a few)?  I should like to add that the above described behaviour occurs wih the MBA NOT running dozens of programs, just the  little file transfer, nothing else.

OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Software Update Downloads Are Horribly Slow - Is AT&T Throttling

Feb 16, 2012

I have experienced horrible software update download speeds for two weeks. www.speedtest.net and other test sites show good performance (usually about 10 mbps down and 1.5 mbps up). The software update download progress seems to be interrupting and then continuing. Its been grinding out 1.09 GB for the snow leopard combined update for over 6 hours this afternoon. Anyone else having problems with software update? I'm beginning to wonder if AT&T is throttling my internet traffic. Is there a tool to check this?

Dell Dimension 3000 (PoS) running XPThe Macbook and Netbook are both connected via Wifi, while the PC is connected via network cable to my Macbook with Internet sharing on.Out of curiosity I ran a speed test (speedtest.net) to see if there was any difference between what I was getting through Wifi, and through sharing. I could understand losing some speed going from wifi to internet sharing, but I also get 8-9 mbps download results on my netbook.

My "G" is connected as a remote station and extends my network and I connect my stereo to it.I've noticed that my wifi network starts off relatively fast (speedtest from my Powerbook laptop is about 10-15mbs), however it soon slows down significantly (to about .2-.5 mbs). My line connection is fiber optic. My PC (which is connected directly to the router) gets very fast speeds (about 80mbs).

Intel Mac :: Poor WiFi Speed On It But Excellent With IPhone 4S?

Jun 12, 2012

I've recently upgraded my internet speeds through my ISP to have 50Mbps download and 2Mbps upload.  I use my 2TB Time Capsule as a router as it has by far provided the best connectivity than any other router.  I run dual network - connect my iPhone 4S through standard network and my iMac through 5GHz network.  Since upgrading my speed, I have noticed that my iMac speeds vary greatly, but most of the time I'm struggling to get more than 10Mbps download, however on my iPhone I easily achieve almost 40Mbps.  I have tried different browsers, and ensured all other applications are closed and even switched the iMac (2009 i7 quad core) to the standard network.  At that point I noticed a slight increase in speed but it was short lived.

I am stumped on what to try next.  Does anyone have ideas? The iMac is a little hot, but nothing that isn't normal so I can't put it down to heat or anything. I recently installed Windows 7 through bootcamp but didn't expect that to impact anything, however it was around a SIMILAR time that I noticed issues, as previously I was getting a consistent connection of 20Mbps before I upgraded.

OS X :: MAC Running At Slow Speed?

Aug 1, 2010

I am having a number of problems with my 14th month old Macbook.

My wifi is slow whilst my room mate who uses a PC gets a much faster speed.

My general processing speed is slowing down even though i have done a system clean using "Clean My Mac"

Safari is like a snail so I have given up completely and have been using Chrome which initially was great but the past few weeks it also is slowing down, behaves strangely and wont let me sign into either my Twitter or YouTube but again my flat mate who also uses Chrome but on a |PC has no problem with these.

I am wondering if I have a virus or well honestly dont know what is going on but things are not working as smoothly as 6 months ago and this is not what I expected from a MAC having had years and years of using sluggish PCs.

I pinged [URL] and got the average above, no packet loss. I have:

-reset modem and both routers
-contacted my ISP all ok there
-bypassed the both routers and still slow(this leading me to think its a software-settings problem on my end)
-reinstalled OS

still slow. besides preforming a seance I am clueless, which isnt saying much.

MacBook :: Pro Slow To Increase Fan Speed / Set It To Do?

Jan 15, 2010

I have a base model June 09 13" Macbook Pro running 10.6.2, during normal use CPU temp. is fine, lower than my previous Macbook 07 edition. However, when I use handbrake, the temp spikes very quickly, I know this is normal as the processsors are being used at 100%. However, unlike my old Macbook, the fan takes a long time to spin up to counter the increase in CPU temp. I see 101 degrees centigrade and the fans are still at 2000rpm. After a few minutes they react and slowly increase to maximum. I am not comfortable with this temp, my old Macbok used to only get to 85 degrees centigrade. I have read about SMC fan control, is there a way to set this so that it increases the fan speed at lower temps without having a detrimental effect on battery life.
