OS X :: Interrupt HD Format - Might Not Be Properly Wiped
Dec 9, 2010If a user begins a 35-pass HD wipe, makes it to around 15 passes, and then clicks 'skip', does that negate the effect of the erase?

View 1 Replies View RelatedWhen I went to just give the machine a restart, it wouldn't restart (stuck on black screen with fans wailing away) until I pulled my Sonnet Allegro PCIe USB card out.
The only thing connected to it was my Bose Companion 5 USB speakers (which don't seem to work well through hubs, so I bought the Sonnet Allegro to direct connect them)
Thoughts? Anyone else run into this? The Allegro was in the machine for a week now as well as the BOSE speakers being hooked up to it. Out of nowhere this started this morning.
I have started a bootcamp installation on new (updated) mbp. During the install, windows-installation makes a critical error and says that the installation cannot continue.
I managed to eject the disk by holding down the mouse button, but my problem is that the mbp starts up in the corrupted windows installation and stops again. I'm in an endless rutine where I cannot boot in Leopard again.
I'v tried to give it the Leopard installation disk but it's beeing ejected. How do I get pass bootcamp and into OS X again.
The performance through the VPN is badly affected by the Airport scanning regularly; often the VPN hangs.
I have deleted the unnecessary wireless networks listed in the Advanced button under Network Preferences. However, the problem persists.
Can you advise how to either stop the scanning or stop it interfering with Internet connection?
I received an automatic update for quicktime yesterday. After the install, I noticed that Finder would flash and interrupt any application. It seems like I clicked off on the desktop when I am working. I then have to click on the application screen to continue working. This happens about every 2-3 minute intervals. When I restart the computer, Suitecase always opens up. Any ideas?? I have a G5 with 10.4.
View 2 Replies View Relatedabout an hour ago i downloaded stuffit the zip program. I got the link from a post here at this forum. As soon as i installed it my screen flashed real quick and my background changed back to the stock "space" one. I then noticed all my music, pics, files, games, and movies have been erased. When i open iphoto, safari, itunes, etc. it is like I'm opening for the first time. I have searched and searched and never found a fix or a reason why this happened. I don't see any change to the user fold or in the accounts settings. I have restarted several times. I don't have any backups to restore from because I haven't purchased time capsule yet.
View 17 Replies View RelatedI have two terabyte hard drives in my desktop. Since I barely boot the desktop anymore, I pulled one out and hooked it up in a USB enclosure. I was using it to watch movies off of. I made a shortcut ("alias"?) to the drive (which was mounted using NTFS-3g) and put it in the movies folder so that I could access it from frontrow. I had a bunch of seasons of Seinfeld, Simpsons, and Family guy that i ripped from DVD using handbrake, but there was also backups of alot of my Software CD's on the drive. Nothing I can't make again from the originals, but a pain to do.
Regardless, all of a sudden (A day after hooking it up), everything is gone. On the Mac side, I just see a folder labeled "System Volume information". I unplugged it and plugged it in to windows and I just see a couple files that get created by Mac OS ("trashes", etc), none of my actual data. Both sides, however, recognize that only 27GB is free on the drive which leaves me some hope that I haven't lost everything. Does anyone have suggestions for recovering this stuff?
The drive is a WD Caviar Black 7200RPM 1TB disk. As far as I'm concerned, they are the best 1TB drive made from a warranty / reliability standpoint, but obviously disk failures do happen....this doesn't seem like a HDD failure to me though as the drive *seems* to be working correctly. I tested it with HDTune and the transfer rate is still the same, so it seems like something got corrupt somehow (not a mechanical failure)...
Just yesterday I'm opening up iTunes and to my disbelief all my music was not there (40+ gigs worth). I try and close down and open iTunes back up but nothing, I restart my xp computer and still nothing. So I look under file explorer and it seems like all my music is still located under the "iTunes music" folder. So I uninstalled all the apple products on my computer and reinstalled iTunes 9 et. Al. And still no results. Does anyone know how to get my library to show up in iTunes?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI updated MacJournal, and to my horror, see nearly all the notes in multiple journals BLANKtwo years worth of notes just gone. The page titles are still there, but no content. The data is critically important to my business. Where is it? How do I get it back? FYI: Ive been on the road for work, which means no Time Capsule backups for the past week. While on the road, Ive been constantly working on four pages in one Journalthese, plus maybe four others in different journals still show data. My guess is that restoring from an older backup will mean sacrificing newer data...which is not an option. Ive dug through Mariner Softwares forums and blogs, but cant find anything (other than angry posts from people saying Mariner is horrible about responding to problems....great. This is a nightmare.

Suddenly after crashing my safari's history seems to be vanished. I've looked into the folder ~/Library/Safari and noticed that History.plist got wiped. I have historyindex.sk (it's about 9mb) file though. Is it possible to recover my history somehow? To decode that index file or something? (I haven't made manual backups).
View 2 Replies View RelatedWhile upgrading from Tiger 10.4 to Snow Leopard 10.6 (Mac Box Set purchased from apple store) on my macbook pro the installation process froze up. Tried several times with same outcome. Even wiped the disk & reinstalled original software (tiger 10.4). No disk repairs necessary. So starting with a clean slate snow leopard still wont make it through the installation process.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am having an issue with a G5 my buddy just gave to me. The computer had been working fine for him, he recently got a new iMac. Anyways, we wiped the hard drive and I took it to my place to do a clean install with 10.4. Upon start-up I get a screen with a folder icon that flashes between a question mark and the mac face. I have tried holding down C upon boot, no success. Dual CPU powermac G5, bought in 2003 or 04 (he thinks 2003). Do not have original installation disk. Have retail copy of 10.4 If I hold down the option key when powering on. On the screen appears a mouse icon which I can move, as well as two icons. A circular arrow in a box, and a right-pointing arrow in a box.

I connected the external hard drive although it was not working so I turned on time machine and tried to use this although didn't have time to set up time capsule so I just cancelled it and shut it. She turned her Mac on this morning and said that windows had completely disappeared! She took it to her local computer store, not an apple store, and was told that because time machine had been turned on and off that windows and the hard drive associated with it had all been wiped!!

Yes it would be a wise move to just reinstall mac osx first however i do not plan on using it at all, this mac was given to me and i prefer to use windows, ive used windows perfectly in the past before.
Currently i only have access to a windows computer, an 8gb usb (for the win 7 installation), 4gb usb (using rEFIt) and the mac itself.
I had to send my computer to apple for a repair and it came back wiped clean.
Due to the problem it was having I was unable to back up, I found this out when I tried to and my external hd back up failed . I have everything on my iPhone that I really need, iTunes and iPhoto library. I is there anyway to take that from my iPhone and put it on my computer?
I purchased an external harddrive to back up my entire student drive. The drive had to be formatted to be compatible with a Mac, and I did this with the customer support over the phone. Used basic copy and paste methods to put my information on the ehd. I triple checked to make sure it stayed there, by properly ejecting drive and plugging it back in. Had my mbPro wiped clean entirely, reloaded Leopard, and am now left with just basic applications and files. Plug in the ehd, and it shares the exact same information as my current wiped-clean drive. I made it as an exact replica of my information filled mac, and it is now an exact replica of my empty mac. All documents, music, photos, applications, etc. GONE. This information was valuable to me beyond words, and I need it back. Does TimeMachine have anything to do with this? I have never used this application, but upon plugging in my ehd, it asked for SOMETHING (which I don't remember).

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm running Snow Leopard on my new Macbook Pro. I've got a 1.5TB External hard drive that I'm trying to figure out how to format in HFS+ with Apple Partition Map. I can figure out how to format in HFS using Disk Utility, however it still does it in GUID format and I do not know how to do it in Apple Partition Map.
Googleing this for hours has lead with all kinds of information on how to go to GUID FROM Apple Partition Map but not the other way around. I know GUID is the new hottness.. but this drive will be used exclusively to connect to my XBOX 360 and it supposedly only reads HFS+ when its formatted with Apple Partition Map. (I have tried it with Mac OS Extended (Journaled) with GUID, and the XBOX does NOT recognize it) I do not want to use Fat 32, (I know that that is the other major option) beacuse it limits file size.
I have wiped my hard disk clean and reinstalled Lion. I don't want to restore the whole shebang from my Time Machine backup because I want my apps to be installed clean. So my first question is about restoring my mail. I understand that I should make Mail my current application, then click on "Enter Time Machine."When I do that, I see "Today" which is my current setup - nothing much on my computer. I try to go back in time, but I can't because Time Machine thinks "Today" is the only existing backup. How can I get Time Machine to restore Mail from my hard drive before it was wiped clean?

I'm using Macbook Pro(2010, 10.6.6) and a PC with Windows 7. I need to transfer image files from both laptops to an external drive. I formatted the external drive in exFAT and wanted to know if there are any problems that might occur in the future. I already know there is an issue with such programs as Carbon Copy Cloner. I primarily need the drive for backup of the images and not system backups. Do you have any file corruption or other problems formatting in exFAT?
