Sometimes I feel like focusing a section of a Safari window (eyesight matter, for example) and I don't want to lose vision of other things going on, say, msn, skype, or even a movie I'm watching.

Mar 24, 2009I've had pretty good luck running just about every Windoze app I have "leftover" from my Windows Vista days on my iMac and Macbook Pro via BootCamp. I run Vista on both Mac machines. I'm wondering what experiences others have had with Windoze apps that have "bombed out" under BootCamp. Got any that failed? What are they?

Jun 17, 2009I've got 8.5 running in an emulator.I had a few classic apps on an OS X Mac that had been working under the Classic Environment. I transferred them over into the emulator (SheepShaver), and OS 8 is detecting them as documents, not as applications.Anybody seen this before?If I install software, it works fine, but not if I copy it over. I don't have the original installer, but I do have the application in a .sit archive. I think it should be fine if I copy the archive over to OS 8, and then decompress it there. Problem here is, I can't find a download link to a version of Stuffit Expander that will run on OS 8 (I think I need version 4 or 5.)

OS X :: Possible To Run An Application In Dashboard
Sep 26, 2009was running the flash player from Pandora.com in dashboard using a Safari webclip; however this was sucking up 30% of CPU usage even when the player was idle (ie., paused). This was causing my heat fans to run way too often. The Pandora One application (which runs via Adobe Air) only uses 10% CPU when running on the desktop. So I was wanting to see how much CPU it would suck up if I could somehow run it in dashboard.

Nov 14, 2009I have just bought my first Mac, in quite some time. No idea why I ever went the PC route. Anyhow, I bought a used Mac Book Pro and the previous owner had Little Snitch installed on the computer. I keep getting some fairly annoying messages about kernal tasks and programs accessing the internet. I know what it is trying to do, I just don't find it necessary. So, I went into my applications, found Little Snitch, and dragged it to the trash. I then emptied the trash secure in the knowledge that I had just uninstalled and gotten rid of the Little Snitch. But no. The pop up box persists. Does anyone have any insight as to how I can rid myself of this nuisance?

Jan 8, 2010I have a late 2009 Mac Mini running 10.6.2 with an occasional odd problem. I'll go up to the menu bar at the top and discover that its not the appropriate menu bar for the application I'm in. I might be in Safari (responsive in the window), but it says "Finder" in the menu bar - or Quicktime or some other open app. I can cycle through the windows without a problem, but the menu bar doesn't change. Then all of a sudden, everything is fine.

Dec 20, 2009what a pain - can't seem to delete anything that comes off my external HD in mac - external has been reformatted because it was hooked up to XP PC and wouldn't accept any thing off the mac - its a TB external with about 5GB of stuff on it that I use daily - I had folders on there that have applications for XP no use to me now but trash won't delete - it just won't do it - they are big files to and I can't take them out of the trash without making another copy so some are now x3 its insane - is this a fault of the maker or the system or the external???

May 12, 2008I have an iMac and a MacBook. My brother is getting a MacBook Pro for University and wants to be able to use the programs (Photoshop, Microsoft Office, etc.) on our iMac from time to time. The problem is the school gave him no install discs, they just copied a disc image to his drive.
My question is, can you just copy applications from one computer to another? I know in Windows this was impossible, but on a Mac the applications seem to be more self-contained. I did copy one app successfully (Comic Life) but will doing the same work for all apps?
OS X :: Navigating To Different Windows Of Same Application
Sep 18, 2008Please educate me if there is an elegant way of accomplishing this simple and common task from a long-time Windows user. Let's say I have Thunderbird or Mail open, and I start writing a new message on a new message window. Then momentarily I click behind it to the inbox to check something; say, to find another address I need. Now, the New Message window has become buried under the Inbox window, and since it's smaller than the Inbox, I can't click on it to bring it back forward (unless, of course, some edge of it is sticking out from under the inbox). If I was on windows, I'd just click on the New Message window's tile. The dock doesn't distinguish between different windows of the same program.
Using Expose is cool, except it takes me several keystrokes or a keystroke plus the mouse to find what I'm looking for (plus F9 isn't as easy to reach as ALT-Tab, IMO), especially if I've got a lot of windows open. I like in Windows being able to visually scan all of the windows that exist without having to move the mouse, and then only need one mouse click to get to that window. Perhaps there's a way to flip through the different windows in your current app? That would make things simpler and more elegant, but I certainly don't know how to do that. I'd love to hear your tips to make this transition go smoother! Alright, F10 does that, I just remembered! Also regarding Expose, if I've got several textedit windows open and they're all zoomed out (but with different file names), there's no way for me to identify them without first hovering over them to see their file names.

Oct 6, 2008My System Preferences is gone. I definitely did not delete it so I can't understand where it has gone. Nonetheless, I'm traveling at the moment and won't have access to my installation discs for 9 more months. Do I just need the SystemPreferences.App file? I'm running version 10.5.5.

Oct 31, 2008MBP Penryn Late 2008 2GB RAM 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo. I'm getting the following popup from time to time: Your Mac OS X startup disk has no more space available for application memory. Then, it pauses the app that uses the most memory (Safari) and shows a window where I can pause and resume applications, or force quit. Strange thing is, I still have 4GB left on my HD, and my memory bar is only 2/3 filled.

Mar 10, 2009I went to click on my iPhoto application and it wouldn't load, it had a gray question mark on it. I clicked it again and it got dragged onto finder, and when I released my mouse it made a poof sound. I remember doing this in the beginning when I got my laptop if you wanted to get rid of an application from the dock. I went to the Mac HD and went to applications and where iPhoto used to be, is now blank. I searched in Spotlight, and went to Applications<utilities.
Is there somewhere where I can re-download it from the Apple site? Or do I have to totally reformat my computer to bring it back to me.
Applications :: Playing Mkv's On Mac - Which Application To Use
Mar 19, 2009I am pretty new to the Mac scene and really love my MacBook Pro Unibody.
The only one problem that I have is a fact that there are no decent players to watch HD movies.
VLC player supports mkv's, but it still cannot handle videos using multi-processing. So you can clearly see some stuttering and the mkv's even in 720p play not so well.
QuickTime Player with Perian codecs is also not best and is very slow.
Could you guys tell me how you play huge mkv's (7-10gb)? Which applications do you use? I know my MBP is a very powerful machine... too bad it still cannot handle good HD videos..
