I went to click on my iPhoto application and it wouldn't load, it had a gray question mark on it. I clicked it again and it got dragged onto finder, and when I released my mouse it made a poof sound. I remember doing this in the beginning when I got my laptop if you wanted to get rid of an application from the dock. I went to the Mac HD and went to applications and where iPhoto used to be, is now blank. I searched in Spotlight, and went to Applications<utilities.
Is there somewhere where I can re-download it from the Apple site? Or do I have to totally reformat my computer to bring it back to me.
Thrilled with the new Imac. I lost "Downloads" from the dock, a very interesting thing on this computer and trying to figure out how to get it back. So much new to learn, The best way?
So I just upgraded and moved my files over using the time machine but now my recovered files folder in my dock is missing (all that's there is a question mark). How can I get this folder back and get rid of the question mark.
a few minutes ago i was cleaning up my dock, i pulled garageband off and then noticed i still needed it there, so i went into my applications folder to try and find it, but it's not there? ive used spotlight search and looked in a fair few folders - including the recycling bin, and cannot find it. Ive also tried opening some of the files ive made with it and they open in quicktime and says the document cannot be opened. dont say reinstall iLife 09, i bought it from a guy on ebay with it preinstalled; but he never sent the disks.
Somehow I was trying to change my itunes size and ended up draging my download folder off of my dock. This is probably a simple fix, but can someone please tell me how to get it back on my dock.
And lost my Dock animations. what can I do..when I start an application from my dock it doesn't bounce anymore or show the little bubble under the icon to show that it is open. I have the bubble under the finder icon but nothing else.
I have an application on my desktop that is attached to a webserver updating account that I need to modify the settings for. Problem is, I've forgotten the password and their 'forgot password' thing isn't responding after a few hours. If I could just reveal the password that's saved on the desktop application then I wouldn't have to mess with it. I looked all though Keychain, but it doesn't seem to be anywhere in there. Back in PC days there were tons of applications that could just reveal what was behind the little dots. After about 20 minutes of searching, it seems that the mac world offers no such convenience. Anyone know some other way around this? I mean, it must be stored somewhere on here. The application is remembering the password.
I had Yahoo Widgets on my desktop. It was a little separate dock from the main dock and when I clicked on the visible part a tray would slide out with all the little widgets. Unfortunately I clicked "close" and the little dock disappeared. The application was still there in Applications but when I clicked on it, the little dock did not appear.
So I downloaded Yahoo Widgets again - it was called "Gallery" but even though an application called "Yahoo Widgets" appears in the Applications list, when I click on it, nothing happens. Unfortunately, Yahoo is ending support for this Widget Engine and I think the download has been deleted from their site. So I am thinking of restoring the widget from a backup that I made of the Mac HD but even though I have the hard disk attached to my computer.
I don't know how to find and restore the files for this application to make the little separate Yahoo Widget dashboard or dock appear on my desktop again. I have checked start "Yahoo Widgets" in System preferences under user and starting items. I really don't know what to do after this step but would really like to have this Yahoo widget dock again on my desktop because it was very useful.

We have lost our iPhoto application. The icon is still on the desktop, however, it no longer shows up in applications and we can't launch it. How can we restore iPhoto? (Also, we are in China traveling which makes it a bit more complex)
Info: iPhoto '11, Mac OS X (10.7.3), Still have desktop icon
I just noticed that the icon for my Applications folder has been replaced with an icon for a different folder. (I was adding new icons to some folders the other day and apparently wasn't watching what I was doing closely enough.) how can I restore the Application folder icon back to its original state?
For some reason, my iTunes icon has decided that it won't stay in the Dock. When I open it, it will sit on the right of the dock, like any application that doesn't have a permanent place on the Dock. It shouldn't - it always used to live in the middle. However, if I drag it back there, it stays in place about 1 second, and then shoots back over to the right again. Even if I select "Keep in Dock" from the context menu, that clears as soon as it moves back to the right. As soon as I shut down iTunes, the icon disappears. I've done a lot of searching and it seems that loads of people have suffered this problem with various apps (i.e. it's not iTunes specific), but I've not yet found a solution. Some people have suggested it's a .Mac/mobile me syncing issue, but I've turned syncing off, reset syncing data, overwriting the mobile me Dock with my Mac Dock, everything I can think off - besides, the icon moves to the right so quickly that it's not had time to sync. Another suggestion I've seen is deleting com.apple.dock.plist, logging out and back in again. Even doing this and starting with a "virgin" Dock still sees iTunes refusing to stay. I've tried repairing disk permissions too.
You know how there is a blue dot underneath an application's icon in the dock representing that the application is running? Is there a way to change this to another color? I don't see any option for it, so I think it's unlikely that it can be changed but if it can I'd appreciate being told how to change it.
Just noticed this happening in SL the last few days - app icons in my dock are starting to become invisible. The white dot underneath shows that it is running, but there is no icon. The icons are present on the apps themselves, but also do not show up when I look at stacks. Is it just yet another SL bug? Just to add: killing the Dock doesn't fix it, quitting the Finder doesn't fix it, and restarting the computer doesn't fix it.
The problem began when I was attempting to force quit an app that had frozen last night. The Force Quit box wouldn't pop up and I got the rainbow pinwheel within Firefox. After the Force Quit box still wouldn't appear, I was able to shut down other apps and even able to restart the computer. Upon restart, once I tried to click an app on the dock, i'd see the icon bounce once or twice then just completely freeze. I'm able to move around the cursor arrow, but can't click anything.
This morning, I was able to open the Terminal (it never popped up in the dock for some reason) and did the 'killall Dock' command. At this point, my system started running real slow and I couldn't seem to double click anything. I had to cmnd + click 'Open' to get to the Activity Monitor. That opened, but then it froze and gave me the window pinwheel. I tried to force quit it, but it wouldn't quit. I had to hold down the power button to turn it off. When I tried rebooting, I couldn't even get to the Terminal anymore since now it would pop up in the dock when I opened it.
When i upgraded to Lion my application folder dissapeared fro the right hand side of the dock.I would like to put it back in as a folder with the letter A in it. Tried to drag frpm Mac HD in finder but it comes in as a text icon.Cant use the display as -- when I right click as it is greyed out.
I got a new MacBook Pro 15" retina display, migrated my data from my old mac, and now the Dock application is consuming a ton of CPU on the system. I have found many other threads in these forums, many of them quite old. They typically suggest a problem with VMWare fusion or Parallels, neither of which I have on my system. They also suggest removing the com.apple.dock.plist file and killing the application, which did not help, nor did removing all applications from the dock and quitting all other applications.

I've ported my Qt 4.3 application on Mac OS and it works correctly fine. After I've created a setup which install my application and other required files. Now I'm searching help for 3 things : 1) How I can customize my application icon and give it a specific icon 2) How to create a desktop shotcut of my application after installation 3) How to add my application to the Dock. I'm on Mac X 10.4.6, I'm using Xcode 2.0 and I've created the setup with PackageMaker.
I just purchased a MBP (prev gen) about a week ago, and I've been noticing something weird in the dock. This usually happens a few minutes after I boot the computer from being completely off, but what seems like an Application quickly shows in my dock and then disappears. It happens in a split second and there's not enough time to see what it is. It just opens and closes. I haven't installed much on this MBP, just Office, Firefox, Visualhub, Mactracker and perian and flip4mac. I have all these Applications installed on my iMac and I have never seen this happen before.
On my new iMac 21.5 I inadvertently dragged the Application folder out of the Dock and it disappeared in the puff of smoke. I managed to drag a new alias back to the Dock, but when I click it now it only gives me the finder, but does give me the large window with all the icons displayed. How do I restore this aspect?
I want to get rid of the pop-up labels which appear when you mouse over dock icons. I've routed around in the dock plist, and found that I can achieve this for items that are permanently in my dock by just blanking their 'file-label' string in the dock plist, but was wondering if there is a way to do this for all items in the dock?
I've tried adding every logical 'key' to the plist file, I can think of, with a false boolean value, but to no luck. I'm pretty new to OS X.
My Application icon is missing from the dock and i am not able to drag it from the finder window. However I am able to access the applications through the finder window. Also, while the applications folder was on the dock, its standard icon was not coming on- instead it was showing the icon of the first application in the folder.
