I am new to Mac, but have used Linux in the past. How does one go about managing the user groups? I need to setup a few special groups to share among different users on the machine.

Or should we just wait for 10.6 Server?
I am trying to get access to a cvs repository using a client that runs OSx and a server running OSx. What is the OSX command to add members to a group. I think the unix command is group -m groupname username but there is no group group command in osx is there something similar in osx?

So I may want to use the account from time to time but I don't need to be checking mail and downloading all the accounts. How can I set up a mail group to check mail from several accounts - but exclude one of the accounts (its duplicated you see). I am using outlook 2010.

I have a 500gb Time Capsule setup in another room. The problem is though that my DSL modem is in my office connected via ETHERNET to the iMac. I am trying to setup the Airport via Wifi to share my internet.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm sort of new to the Time Capsule and still trying to wrap my head around all the different services. Currently I've setup my Time Capsule via ethernet and have setup mobile me on it. I've been trying to setup 'back to my mac' with no luck, the time capsule never shows up in the mobile me account. I'm able to connect to the Time Capsule via AFP protocol, but I couldn't find any documentation detailing the level of security of this connection. So far all that I've found is that my documents are being sent as clear text, not even the slightest hope of SSL. I would hope that enforce SSL and deny clear text connection would be an option but I couldn't find it in the control panel.
My last question is regarding the Time Capsule network share option. Obviously the share works well, as it can be access by any computer, but how would one setup the Time Machine to back it up too? As of right now it seems that the general belief of having your network share on the device that backs up your mac, means that the network share itself is being backed up. This is obviously not true, unless it's setup. I may have been caught in the middle of apple commercial propaganda and therefore believe that the peripheral can do more than it physically can.
I would like to be able to share my iPhoto library with my wife (another user) on the same machine. The only way I have been able to find to do this is to write some unix programming language in the OS. I don�t really want to do this. Is there an easier way to share my library with another user? Will iPhoto buddy do this, or another separate application?

The problem is that when my photos are brought up on my girlfriends account they are at a very low resolution to what the file actually is. It's like taking a DSLR photo and making it camera phone quality. How can I improve this? can it be done or does iphoto lower the resolution to get a fast transfer time?

I have a single iTunes library on my Macbook Pro. I would like to share between to user accounts, each with Apple ID's. What's the best way to do so? Right now, I've given the second user rights to read/write to the first users "Music" folder. But when one user adds song files, the other must "Add Folder" in order to see the new purchases. It's kind of putsy. Is there a better way?Â

This is my first post as the soon to be proud owner of a 2010 13" MBP. I'm looking to copy all tunes/photos/settings from my 2006 mini and of course I've got questions:
1- Anyone do a new setup via wireless? I'm going to use a Linksys wireless N and was curious on a time estimate (I know its gonna be slow...).
2- The mini has all settings under my wife's user account...if I just transfer everything as is then I'll end up with my new MBP info being under her name as well. How can I get the files and settings that are under her name to show up under mine on the new MBP?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm surprised I wasn't able to find much at all on this by searching this forum or the web. Maybe I'm looking for the wrong thing. Anyway, here goes:
I want to share an Address Book between different user accounts on the same Mac, without resorting to using MobileMe or another sync tool that requires internet access to function. I had hoped to set it up where the Address Book is in the Shared folder and accessed by each user, but that doesn't appear to be possible. It's surprising that this isn't a natural function in native Mac OS X.
I've also tried exporting an Address Book Archive to the Shared folder. It shows on my account to be 1.6MB. When I log in as another user, it shows to be Zero KB, even after changing permissions, and importing into Address Book does nothing.
I have four user accounts on the same iMac and I'd like to be able to view the files within each account. When I try access one of the other three accounts through Finder, the folders have red minus signs on them. If I try to open one, I get an error message about not have the right authorities. However, I've given all four user accounts administrator access.

My wife and I have separate user accounts on the same MacBook Pro so that we can both sync our phones to this computer. My account is the primary user account, and my iTunes library is stored in this account. My wife would like to put music on her iPhone so she can run, but I can't seem to access the music library thru her account. I know the files are all on the hard drive regardless, so I just need to know how I can make iTunes on my wife's account access the library that's there. I've tried the steps I could find on Apple's website, but I can't seem to make it work. I'm running the latest versions of everything - even tho the post says I'm running 10.9.1, I'm actually running 10.9.4

My mum bought a MacBook two or three years ago, but after a while it became unbearably slow. She stopped using it. I recently dug it up to try to do something about it, needed her password for reinstalling the OS, which she of course forgot (the password, not the OS). Anyway, I messed around in Single User Mode and accidentally effed something up - the "Couldn't find root user. Sleeping and trying again." message started flooding the screen.
I read somewhere that I should delete a file that would make the MacBook show me the initial setup screen upon startup, so I did - all was well until I got to the end of registration. When I click 'Continue' it should take me to the screen responsible for creating a new login account - instead there is a grey 1px line in the middle of the light-grey box. I can still click 'Go Back', but that obviously takes me no-where.
Does anyone know how to set-up Pro Tools for 2 different user accounts? Works fine on mine (Admin), set-up another for my wife (also admin) but problems loading and using. Is this something to do with sharing application settings?

This is the one I want to remove. How can I do this? I have 4 user groups. Why?, when ever I had trouble and called AppleCare they had me install a new user group, which I never removed.

My iMac (10.5.7) is currently set up with me as the Admin user. I know that this is not recommended but it's been like this for a while and I'm considering setting up an Admin user and dropping my account down to a standard account. Is this likely to cause me any problems with the applications that have been installed over the months or is there anything I need to watch out for when doing this?

Apple writes in its OS X Lion screen sharing description that: "You can remotely log in to a Mac with any user account on that computer and control it, without interrupting someone else who might be using the computer under a different login."Â
Unfortunately, this is not true in my case: When other users are using my 2011 iMac for webbrowsing or DVD watching and I log in on my own acount from my macbook pro, video will stop playing, the spinning wheel sometime appears. The system does not really crash, but wil respond very slowly and in fact is not useable until I as remote user stop my activities or log out. This is not how it should be, especially as the iMac's CPU, memory and network load are very low according to activity monitor's information.Â
