I have a hp personal media drive where all my stuff from my pc is. I put it on there when I got rid of my pc and now I need the files when I try moving them over it keeps saying not sufficient privileges.

step by step directions for moving the actual media ‘files’, ie the mp3s, as well as the necessary library files, to an external drive, when ‘keep media organized’ and ‘copy files to media folder’ are NOT SELECTED?I am running OS X 10.6.8 and iTunes 10 [and prefer a solution which does not require updating software. I prefer to maintain my own customized folder and file structure for my mp3s; and have therefore deselected
1] Keep iTUnes Media folder organized and 2] Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library. All the directions in the various posts seem to require selecting these options. Is this critical for success?
From the many posts I have read, it seems there’s more to it than just drag and drop, that I need to ensure that iTunes is ‘pointed’ to somewhere? Not the mp3s themselves, but to a ‘library” [is that yet another copy of the mp3s? somewhere on my hard drive?].
Additionally, over the years I have moved about 45GB of mp3s to ‘storage’ external hard drives to create more space on my laptop. Not ideal interim solution. I am again low on space and have decided to buy new external drive for holding all of my mp3s, ie the 45 GB in ‘storage’ and the remaining 75 GB from my laptop. Ideally, I would like to also keep all my artwork, playlists and ratings and the like [which I guess are in the ‘libraries’???]
Am I correct, that I will need to also move to the new external hard drive that folder which holds the .itl and .xml files and which is named ‘iTunes’??? and then there is another step to link the ‘media’ to the ‘library’ to ‘itunes’?
My 13" MacBook Pro will not play media files. Also, on iphoto, images are unable to be exploded. Interestingly, it is no longer running hot (as it has since installation of Lion a few months ago).

I'm new to Mac and am trying to move a slew of files from my PC in preparation for a total switch. In this case, I had two folders with numerous subfolders that I wanted to make available on my iMac G5 (Leopard). I copied the folders to CDs, then transferred them to the Mac. But now I'm unable to write to those folders/subfolders. Apparently, my permission is restricted to "read only." When I go to Finder, then Get Info and try to change the permission, Mac will not recognize my administrator's password. The folders/subfolders were not password protected on the PC so I don't know what password Mac is looking for. I need full access to these files (R/W) on the Mac.
View 11 Replies View RelatedI am no longer able to move files via Finder or on my Desktop. When I click on a file, it is selected and the name of the file is high lighted in blue. I can move it around the screen but it is "stuck" to the cursor. When I let go of the mouse button, the file remains stuck to the cursor and sometimes, I can interact with various elements, i.e. buttons, etc. as if the file had never been selected, yet its icon remains attached to the cursor. After a while, the icon will disappear.I have tried restarting, shutting down and restarting and repairing permissions without success.Also, looks like auto-correction and spelling is no longer working either as it doesn't recognize misspelled words anymore.

I tried to move a load of unwanted iTunes files to the recycling bin, but missed! They duly loaded onto the desktop, then the computer hung (there were only about 3,000 of them, by the way!) What can I do to put my little baby's desktop right? View 10 Replies View RelatedI am upgrading my mid 2012 MBP with an internal SSD. I have16 RAM. OS is Mavericks.
I edit videos using a mix of photos (imported layers via photoshop), short animations, short video clips. I do some very basic stop animation also. So each media file is not heavy (photos, pics, short videos), but I do a lot of layering and compositing in FCPX. I had a lot of delays and freezes with 5400 rpm HDD… so I decided to upgrade to SSD.
Some people have told me to edit it all on my internal SSD as the media files are not big..
Everywhere else on the web I read that all media / libraries should be on an external while I edit them. But most of these contributors are using huge video files, HD, which is not my case.
So – with small media files but lots of editing and effects / animation, should I spend the extra money on a good external 7200 rpm USB3 to edit from ? Or just use external drive for storage and not editing.
Not going for TB as I read there would not be a difference between USB3 and TB on a 7200 rpm external drive (difference is felt when using RAID, r SSD external) ...

I've had my Macbook for just a month now. When I first got it, I wasn't able to move any files to my Western Digital External (that works with my previous blackbook) and my other external. It says The item '(item name)' could not be moved because 'System' (or other folder name) cannot be modified. iWork 09 and Virtual Dj don't work either. I want to reformat the hdd, but I can't do that until I backup everything, which I can't do. I tried the second solution "Type this, followed by Return: sh /etc/rc" and my Mac said could not find this directory.

Currently when using the laptop I can see and access the PMG5 and its files through my wireless connection. I'm planning on picking up an external drive, and I'd just like this confirmed, as in its access ability. If I hook up the external drive to the G5 so I can leave it there, and access its files through the G5. will my laptop also be able to access it through the G5. In other words, when I access the G5 from the laptop over wireless, will the external drive appear as just another folder and/or device on the G5 and I'll be able to move and copy files just like I already do?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have waht appear to be a profile specific issue that prevents me from moving files from a 2nd drive in my machine to the trash when using my standard profile.
I to to my 2nd internal drive and when I drag a file to the trash it asks me "Are you sure you want to delete "xxxxx.jpg" The item will be deleted immediately, You can't undo this action. If I click OK the item is delted and does not do to the trash. It aks liek is is an external drive, not an internal drive
But when I delete a file from my Macintosh HD drive the item goes to the trash as it should.
If I log into my Admin account, the files from the second internal drive moves to the trash normally. I have set my normal login from standard to admin and it stil has the issue, I also have run disk utility and disk warrior and rebuilt the directory, but it has not changed the problem

My mac is starting to become slower because its almost reached it 500GB limit. I accidentally deleted an item on my make but it is on my external HD how to I transfer it from the Ex HD to the Mac. this was an IPhoto Library an Album also is there a way to see how many photos I had backed up on a certain day compared to what I have now-another words I did a back up on may 5th and had x number of photos and had lots of issues with adding more photos but was able to do so now I have more photos but I am not sure they all transferred without going through and counting them TIA?

I recently got myself a MacBook Pro and I'm having problems transferring files from my old Windows XP based laptop. I downloaded the Windows Migration Assistant onto my old laptop but everytime I tried to run it I got various error messages telling me I needed to upgrade this and that. Now the laptop has decided to give in totally and won't switch on at all! I do have all my music etc backed up onto an external hard drive but when I connect it to my MacBook it just doesn't want to know, I assume as all the data on there is formatted as Windows.

Just to let everybody know, I found a pretty straightforward way to do this without having to mess with every single app's preferences. I have a 13 mbp and I replaced the HDD with an intel SSD. The original HDD went into the optibay instead of the superdrive. At first I just moved my whole home folder to the HDD, so that iTunes, iPhoto and everything else would have worked on there not filling up the SSD with unnecessary stuff. But then I felt like my HDD was spinning most of the time and I read that, as I thought, it is better to leave the ~/Library folder on the SSD to avoid this, since every running app basically reads and writes to this folder all the time. So here's what I did:
1) I moved the home folder back to the SSD, copying my ~/Library folder from the HDD in there (this is its default location so you don't have to do anything if you never changed it.
Okay, so I just installed a 750 GB hard drive in the optibay. I currently have my iTunes library on it, but I was wondering if there was an easy way to move all my media/data folders over to it so they dont take up space on my SSD.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a brand new MBP. I have a 1tb external drive with 250gb's of music. I have it attached to my mac via USB. I CANNOT GET ITUNES TO CREATE A NEW LIBRARY ON THE EXTERNAL DRIVE. I CANNOT DRAG AND DROP OR ADD FILE/FOLDER.
But get this, I hook it up to my old Dell and I can do whatever I want. I am friggin pissed that I spent all this money on Mac equip and can't get it going. You may have seen my other post where I posed my issue of: 1tb ethernet drive hooked to airport extreme. Above mentioned 1tb hooked up to back of it via usb. I am completely unable to copy, move, or add files using my mac. But guess what. my pc handles it easily and quickly.
