I just bought a new MacBook Pro. I'm trying to transfer my files from my old computer, which uses Tiger, to the new computer. But I can't use CDs because my computer is dented and the CD drive is closed (it asks me to insert Mac OS X Install DVD into my old computer).

View 6 Replies View RelatedI recently upgraded my MacBook Pro to Snow Leopard, but the computer has some hardware problems and I need to send it in for repair (it won't wake up or boot). It is entirely backed up with Time Machine, and I would like to transfer the calendar and contact data from it to my PowerBook that is running OS X 10.4.
I managed to export an icbu file (iCal) and abbu (Address Book) file from the MBP, but when I try to add them to the PB's iCal and Address Book, I get an error message. The raw data in the Library folder seem to be in a different format as well. Is there any other way to transfer the data?
I have been scanning old pictures into iPhoto, adjusting the dates to put them in chronological order, and merging into events by years. In iPhoto, the pictures are in the order I want in each Event per year. However, each time I try to export the events to the Burn Folder in prep for burning to dvd, they arrive in Burn Folder all out of order! Instead of 1973 - 1974 - 1975 - 1976, they are all mixed up. I've taken the time to go to Photos and Adjust Dates on all of the hundreds of photos, yet that order does not transfer to a folder. WHAT do I need to do?

But I was wondering if anybody could point me to a really simple tutorial on how to restore/clean install my computer. I know how to get all my stuff off of my iMac and onto the new one. But I cannot locate the Tiger disc and only have the iMac install discs. Can I do a clean install with just these discs?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI recently purchased a MacBook 2.1 running 10.4.11, however the seller of the item sent the computer to me with a lot of his own data on so I decided to delete this and start fresh.Whenever I insterted the Tiger disc it would tell me that it was unable to install Mac OS X on my computer so I decided that the best thing to do would be to erase the hard drive, however in doing so I erased the operating system and now whenever I try to boot the computer from the disc I am faced with a folder with a question mark flashing at me.
It appears to do something when I insert the disc that my housemate got with his MacBook Pro which runs Snow Leopard but still tells me that it is unable to install OS X.
I have a mac book pro with a 111.8GB internal HD (only internal hard drive). current state: 3 partitions (all very close to the same size) named: "HDD_tiger", "shared" and "other". As the name implies HDD_tiger has 10.4.11 on it. goal state: I want to join the "shared" and "other" partitions without ffecting "HDD_tiger". Other data that might be needed: I don't care what the other name of the partition is but I plan to move my iTunes files from an external HD to this new > 70GB partition. I have 66GB in my iTunes folder (hence the reason it's on an external HD). Date of Manufacture: less than 8 months after Apple went to Intel processors

I was wondering how would I do a system restore on my Leopard upgraded (from a Tiger OS) iMac? I have done several google searches and i keep getting various answers (which there are different ways but I just want to restore my iMac to factory setting) Would I use my leopard or tiger disk, and how would I go about doing a system restore? What I wanted to do was do a system restore on my mac and upgrade to Snow Leopard. There are alot of scattered unimportant photos, movies, and games on my mac and it feels like a system restore would save me alot of time.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have an ibook G3 dual usb which was running Tiger but after an update to 10.4.11 I think it is, was running very slowly and the browser (i tried safari, camino and firefox) was constantly crashing. I have a back-up copy of retail Tiger on DVD as my original disc is scratched and no longer reads.I erased the hdd in hope of a clean install, but when I tried to boot from the dvd it just showed up with the flashing ? I know the disc will boot as it works in my G4 powerbook.
View 5 Replies View RelatedOk, this is the setup: got an external hard drive hooked up to an airport extreme via USB. I have a macbook that's a few years old with the intel core duo processor and running OS 10.4.11.
I want to be able to see/backup to this hard drive wirelessly from my macbook while on my home network. Basically, everything I've found online makes it look like I have to have my extreme on an 802.11n connection or whatever, which my macbook isn't capable of (intel core duo processor), right? The reason I say this is that all the instructions on how to turn this on circle around options that I don't see in my airport admin utility program.
So is this possible, or am I gonna have to get a new macbook before I can do this. If I get leopard or snow leopard would I be able to do this with time machine, or do I need to be able to do 802.11n for that, too?
Though users of older Intel-based Macs were led to believe they would have to spend $169 to migrate from Tiger to Snow Leopard, new reports state the $29 upgrade disc will work just fine.
In his review of Snow Leopard, Walt Mossberg of The Wall Street Journal, Mossberg reveals that those who have been hesitant to upgrade their Mac will be able to take advantage of Snow Leopard's bargain price, without the need to install the intermediate Leopard operating system first.
"For owners of Intel-based Macs who are still using the older Tiger version of the Mac OS, Apple is officially making Snow Leopard available only in a "boxed set" that includes other software and costs $169," Mossberg said. "The reasoning is that these folks never paid the $129 back in 2007 to upgrade to Leopard. But here's a tip: Apple concedes that the $29 Snow Leopard upgrade will work properly on these Tiger-equipped Macs, so you can save the extra $140."
Wired also confirmed that they were able to upgrade a system directly from Tiger to Snow Leopard. In addition, it is possible to completely erase a hard drive and install Snow Leopard without a pre-existing operating system in place, enabling users to bypass the possible headaches of an upgrade and go with a clean install instead. Wired said many users upgrading from Tiger should probably consider backing up their files from Tiger and doing a clean install instead.
"Of course, the transition isn't guaranteed to be as smooth as it would be from Leopard to Snow Leopard," the report said of the Tiger to Snow Leopard upgrade, "and that's because some older, Tiger-only third-party applications need to be upgraded to newer versions that work with Leopard or Snow Leopard."
Originally released in April 2005, Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger is more than a little long in the tooth at this point, especially considering the astounding success of its follow-up, Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard.
so I have a very unique, bizarre problem. A friend brought her G4 1.67gHz 15" Powerbook to the office to have it looked at as it wasn't working properly. I took a look at it and found that one of the RAM chips was shorted out. I took it out and ordered her a new pair (since it was like $26 for 2gb, and with the one removed she was running on 512). Here's where it gets bizarre: I installed the new RAM and it was freezing regularly. I then took one out and it was still freezing regularly. I booted it from my Utilities partition (I have a bootable firewire drive set up to fix problems and recover data) and ran Disk Warrior, TechTool, and a whole heapin helpin of other fixin and optimization apps. I got it to fix all the reported errors, TechTool reports no hardware errors, everything should work perfectly. So now, the laptop boots to a blue screen. I can't boot it from a retail Tiger install disc, and I can't boot it from the hard drive, it just boots to the Apple logo, the Unix spinner, and then goes blue and freezes. So I set it as a firewire target drive and was able to do an archive/install of Tiger using my G5. It recognized and installed fine and it booted my G5. Ok, so it's not the drive. I restart and nothing, apple/unix logos then blue screen. Same with the Tiger DVD. I replace the original 512MB stick (the working one) and still same result. So finally I go back to my Firewire repairs disc and everything boots fine, all tests come out fine, drive is recognized and works fine, etc. What could cause a computer to boot, a drive to be bootable, but a computer not being able to boot on any installed drive?

I have a Lacie external hard disk that was originally formatted for PCs. I have some files there, but more importantly, my iTunes library is saved directly on the Lacie (I have everything on apple lossless, so they are some big files). I will keep using this PC while connected to the Lacie hard disk to syncro my iPod.
The problem is that I bought a mac now and I wanted the Lacie hard disk to be able to transfer files from mac to pc and vice versa. I have already read that I would have to copy the files that are on the Lacie, reformat the Lacie and then paste the files back. My only doubt is that if I do this reformatting, will I have any problems using the iTunes library while connected to my pc and iPod?
I just ask that because every time I changed any iTunes library folder on the computer, the iTunes would say that the music file couldn�t be found and ask me if I wanted to look for the file. I didn�t want to reformat the Lacie to later find out that I would have to �look for� every single music file, because that would be nearly impossible. I don�t know if I was able to make my question really clear�
I'm banging my head against the wall with this problem. I have a new MBP 13", 4GB Ram, etc etc. When I transfer files across my network (or the office network), it will consistently fail to transfer a few of the files. For instance, I just tried to copy 50 photos to an SMB share on our server here at the office. The transfer window show the progress of 50 files, but when I look at the folder, there are only 48 files. Sometimes I get less, sometimes I get all 50. The same goes for my home network to an SMB share. I've confirmed this failure over N and G networks. The AP at home and the office are different models and I went as far as purchasing a new one for home since I thought it was the problem. Same results. Is there some hardware error going on here with my wifi card? Is there any way to test it? Are the SMB shares the problem?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am transferring info from an iBook G4 running Tiger to a MacBook running Snow Leopard. Everything is going well, except for my ability to transfer the iPhoto library. I have mounted the iBook to the MacBook via Firewire. When I transferred my iPhoto library from my MB to my new MBP, it was easy: all I had to do was drag over "iPhoto Library" from User>Pictures>iPhoto Library But it isn't set up the same way on the iBook: in User>Pictures, "iPhoto Library" is a folder instead of a small iPhoto icon (which you would need to right-click on to see its contents). When I copied the contents of the folder into "iPhoto Library" on the new MacBook, it didn't maintain all of the organization (eg. the albums). Is there any way to do this so that iPhoto will keep the organization of the photo library on the new MacBook, or am I destined to reorganize my thousands of photos into albums again? Please keep in mind that the MacBook is being set up as a new computer, and I am copying over the files/docs/music/photos that she wants to keep from the iBook. I am not using Migration Assistant.
View 5 Replies View Related I've decided to bite the bullet and upgrade to a 17inch Unibody MBP from the 15inch model. I love the size of the 15inch model but really need that extra resolution. I've got a buyer for my old laptop coming round tomorrow and I need to save all of my files and settings. My laptops been backing up to time capsule for the past month or so, will I be able to all of my settings from this or would it be a better idea to create a disk image and use that?
Has everyone else who's done the switch been happy with their new 17incher? I'm kinda worried that it'll be too big as the size of the one i've got now just seems perfect.
I just ordered my first iMac. (27" i7). When it arrives, I would like to transfer a few gigs (15-20) of data from my early '08 15" MBP to it. I won't be doing the whole Apple wizard transfer thing, as I only want a few folders, not all of my settings.
What would be the best way to transfer these files? I'm thinking firewire. My MBP has both the 400 and 800 port. Would this work well? How about ethernet?

I needed to make 40 dvd's. My burner is burnt out on my mac. I've created all the dvd's as iso files with iDVD. Now I need to transfer them to my PC that has a functioning burner. SOOOO... transferring 81.5 GB of data over a network will take days. Having said that, I'm using an unsecured network that drops out frequently. (I just moved in, it'll be weeks until the phone company can hook up my internet... we just had a hurricane and they're busy with repairs). Next idea, use a flash drive. Most of the iso files are bigger than 4Gb - so FAT32 is out. What's left?

I've got a portable hard drive that I use for time machine and for backing up my music and video files on my mac. I've just purchased a new vista PC and would like to transfer the music I've got (around 30 gigs worth) and the videos I've saved (an additional 30 gig) onto it, however when I plug the portable hard drive into my vista pc it doesn't recognize it?

View 9 Replies View RelatedSo here is the deal: My father is transferring to a mac, but he wants the outlook stuff to come with him, and he picked me to arrange that:
1) I want to transfer Outlook files to Mac, contacts and adress book will manage, but I want all the tethering of the saved emails (All emails saved in folders and sub-folders in outlook) to remain intact.
2) I searched and saw some shady way of renaming the files and messing around with them, don't wanna use that.
3) I downloaded trial of 02M by little machines, but that could not connect to outlook and they don't really offer support. (installed latest updates from MS etc.)
4) haven't tried Thunderbird, but I think it just won't do the job.
I'm new to this site and I've been looking at it the past couple of days and decided to register. But my question is I have a MacBook running 10.4.11 and I have another MacBook running 10.5 is there anyway to transfer files between those 2 computers? Or no?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a Windows 98 laptop where I have a large amount of files (pictures, documents, etc.) that I have saved. I am wondering how I can transfer all of those files to my Mac OS X. The Windows 98 is not connected to the internet, so I am unable to do it that way (or it would require a considerable amount of time to e-mail files back to myself, much more time that I am willing to spend at this time) and I tried using a 3.5" floppy disks to transfer files to a Windows 98 computer that was connected to the internet, but the laptop could not read the disks. Additionally, the Windows 98 does not have an ethernet adapter but it does have a UBS connection.

It seems like they are now what they should have been in the first place. I am attempting to sell it and purchase a new MBP. I think I will go with the 15" since the larger screen is more affordable and would be worth it to me.
Now, if I get the new machine, what is the best way to transfer my files such as iTunes and iPhoto libraries, etc? I use Time Machine. I don't want to simply transfer all of my files and settings... I want to be somewhat selective as in I don't want older clutter on my new machine. So do I just plug my external hard drive with my time machine backup and I can pick what I want or do I just drag what I want saved to my external HD and drag them onto the new machine.
I am trying to transfer my user settings and music/photo libraries to my new MBP from my old Alu PBG4 (running 10.4.11), however migration assistant was unsuccessful over the wireless network (which i have a feeling may be because of the old PBG4). The old PBG4 only shows options for using a firewire cable with migration assistant, however when using the MBP it responds to the authentication code sent out and starts the transfer, but gets hung up after about 5 min.
I also have an external HD with a copy of my entire system, but can't figure out how to give the migration assistant access to it. Do I need to create a startup disk on my external HD for this? If so, how exactly do I go about doing that? I'd like to transfer only my itunes library with playlists, iphoto library w/ albums, and safari bookmarks, everything else can start fresh.
I have got the remote login enabled on my mac and I am able to successfully SSH to it from a Windows machine using Putty. Although once I have established the SSH connection, I want to be able to transfer files via it, and I know this is possible using get and put commands. Although when I'm in the SSH terminal via Putty, and I type 'get <filename> <filename>' it says that get is not a command. The same thing is with put.
