OS X Technologies :: Deleted User Still Listed On Network?
Apr 16, 2012
After deleting one of 2 admin users on my MBP (Lion), my other computers still see both users listed on the home network. Mostly it's just annoying, when I can simply ignore the "ghost" user name, but in one case my oldest imac is confused and can't connect to either users. There must be some way to delete preferences or otherwise get the network to "reset" its list of MBP users? (It's is a basic Airport network with an Extreme plus an extending Express.)Â

When I access the user/groups window I can unlock the window to allow for changes. In order to delete a standard user you need to highlight the user you wish to delete and then click the minus sign in the bottom right hand corner. But, I cannot highlight the user I want to delete.

Have recently done a clean install of Lion onto a Mac Pro that was running Snow Leopard. Upgradede to 10.7.3  The Lion Mac sits on an office network of several macs running Snow Leopard and a Network Shared HDD.  In order to gain quick full access to the other computers we have been using "connect as" then inputting the macs registerred user administrator details, we were able us access to the full Mac and it's currently mounted hard drives. Since installing Lion I can see and fully access the network share which only uses guest access, see the Other macs in finder, add to their drop boxes but not connect as a registerred user to access one of the snow Leopard machines.  I get a pop up. Spinning wheel, and eventually a timeout. Can't even cancel this action as it comes up greyed out. Oddly the other macs can still log into the Lion machine. No joy so far toggling network preferrences and I'm pretty sure it's going to be a setting I have missed, So far have had not joy looking online or playing in seeing why it would now not be able to connect as before.Â

I deleted my recipes file by accident. I just looked one day and it was gone. I had moved it from my document file to the desk top because I couldn't figure out how to create a shortcut for that file to eliminate going through all the steps to get to the file. Now, it is gone. Who the heck knows how that happened, but it did. the steps to recover those recipes. Most of them are written in the PAGES file extension, so the DOC recovery system I used didn't see any of my PAGES files.

I'd like a Terminal or AppleScript command to determine if a logged in user is using a virtual display.Â
The scenario is: user1 is in front of the local computer using user1 account (owns /dev/console); user2 is using using a virtual display for the local computer via ScreenSharing on a remote computer.Â
I know `stat -f%Su /dev/console` will give me who is in front of the local computer, but I need another command to determine if user2 is using a virtual display on the same local computer.Â

So it's finals week, and I restarted my computer, and when it came back on, it went to the login screen. My computer never goes to the login screen. I looked at the accounts that were present, and none were mine. Only the "Other..." button was present, so I clicked on this and attempted to manually type in my account name and password, and I was unable to log in. I was able to access the computer through the System Administrator login (root name and master password). My harddrive still shows my name under the User Accounts, however when I go into the System Preferences to make changes to my accounts, only the root account shows. All of my information is still here, but is there a way to restore the account, so I can go back to using my machine with all of its settings? I'm running Leopard 10.5.5 on a Macbook Pro 17", 2.16ghz (1st generation).

I deleted my user file Macintosh HD/Users/MY USER NAME.
How can I get it back? I used data rescue 2 but it didn't get the folders it was in or the file names and I have about 300 files on my desktop so I can't rename everything. I also have a iPhone and I and I want to know if everything on it will be deleted at the next sync (Contacts, songs, videos, Photos, Apps) if I can't get my files back because some of my song aren't backup so my iTunes won't be the same as the last time I sync my iPhone (My iPhone is Jailbroken.)

The other day I decided to reinstall OSX from scratch (Lion). So, formatted and reinstalled. Reinstalled all the programs and updates I wanted manually, then used my TM back up to recover my iTunes, documents and pictures. This is where problems began as my new account (Alex Mason) was named exactly the same as the old one present in the TM backup. Migration assistant created a new user account (Alex Mason2). So I have my new set up in one account and my old documents in another! So I got into the USER directory and transfered them between accounts. So far so good.Â
Then came the issue of removing the Alex Mason2 account. At first this was straight forward. Go to the user accounts pref pane, select Alex Mason2 in other accounts and press the "-" sign. Done.Â
But then, it reappeared! And this time I couldnt get rid. I found this on the support forum here: [URL]...and I followed it to the letter. It describes exactly my situation, that a 2nd user account created because of a name clash when using migration assistant may reappear after initial deletion.Â
After doing so, the account Alex Mason appeared in its place in the other accounts bit on the pref pane. This confused me because I was logged in as Alex Mason so how could that also be another account? It wasnt there before, so why now? I exited the pref pane to see if that sorted things out.Â
Then I couldnt get back on the user accounts pref pane as OSX said it could not load it!. In the hope of sorting things out again, I restarted the iMac only to be greeted by a grey screen (with the cloth texture) and a user + password dialogue box that were empty. Putting my credentials in resulted in a loading icon in the password box and that was it!! Nothing. Nada. Can't log in.Â
I tried repairing permissions (of which some were repaired) and got the same result. I restored via TimeMachine and deleted the second account again. Same again, it disappears but the login name still appears at the log in screen and shortly after, the user re-appears in the user account pref pane again and this time I can't use "-" to delete it. I am wary of trying the above link again. What did I do wrong?! and how can I deleted that second account!

My son somehow managed to put the usr file into the trashcan, and when I went to get it out, it didn't show up there. Now when you start the computer it gives you a screen saying that you have to restart your computer, and will never go any further. Is there anything to be done here?

One thing that has always bugged me about Mac OS is that when a network share becomes unresponsive or unavailable the shortcut on the desktop disappears and you get a glaring messaging that the share has been disconnected. Is there any way to prevent a network share from being removed just because it becomes momentarily unavailable? As an example, on a Windows machine the network share shortcut remains, you simply cannot use it but it is there and ready to go the moment the share comes back online. Is there some way to make OS X behave in this manner? Or is there a way to extend the time out interval for a network share?

Is the guest account 100% safe for the most part as long as they aren't running a file with a known virus or something?
Say a guest is making a text file or something. Can they save it where it's not deleted etc?
I don't want them to be able to do that at all. I want to make sure there is nothing they can do or store crap anywhere

I just made a TM backup of two user accounts (A & B) on one iMac.I now want to delete the files and accounts from the iMac and create a new user account.(A & B shared this computer and it is now going to be used by a third person alone. I don't want all the additional unused A & B account data clogging the hard drive.)Â If I delete the original A & B user accounts, will I still be able to access the backed up files? How?

I also can't understand how they got on there in the first place but that's another matter.

When I tried to connect to the Internet via my iPhone on my MacBook, it didn't want to connect.I turned off the Personal Hotspot and rebooted the iPhone. This didn't solve the problem. Then I deleted the iPhone USB network interface from my Network Preference Pane, in the hope that if I would add it again, the problems would have been solved. There's only one new problem now, I can't add the iPhone USB network interface anymore. Is there a way to get my iPhone USB network interface back in the Network Preference Pane so I can use my iPhone as a Personal Hotspot via the USB?Â

Other than using MAC Address Access Control, is there another way of temporarily removing a user/computer from having access to an Airport Extreme wireless network? There is currently an unruly teenager come stay with my family to have a holiday/get some work experience, but she's on her laptop (accessing Facebook) until the early hours of the morning. As a result she's been late for work every morning. I'd like to bar her computer from accessing the internet from maybe 10pm - 7am.Is this possible, other than using MAC AAC?

After downloading a few new apps tonight, both off the App Store and Safari, I noticed that s6761bm0t3r1 had been newly listed under shared.
One of the apps i downloaded ended up changing my homepage and search engine which was annoying but not too unusual.
After changing things back to usual I went to look through finder to see if anything unwanted had been downloaded and that's when i noticed it. I know it's not my printer because i turned my printer on and it showed up under a different nameI have never had any other machines connect like this to my mac that i know of besides my printerWhen i try to click more info it just keeps on fetching and won't show anythingWhen i try to double click on it it tries to connect and soon after says Connection failedI don't know if it's from something i downloaded but I first noticed it immediately afterwards so I'm thinking it is

I have (had) an effective VPN connection established on my iMac to enable connection to my work computer. I recently reviewed my use of users, creating a separate administer account and changing my home account privileges from admin to 'standard'.Â
I am now unable to use the VPN connection from my home account. The connection shows in the Network pane but the "Connect" button is greyed out. If I unlock the Network pane using the administrator details the Connect button becomes operational. If I change to the administrator account I can use the connection fine.Â
How can I enable the use of the VPN connection from a standard user, having locked the network connections (for the sake of not having children interfere with the network settings)?
