OS X :: Guest Account - Can User Save Files Where They Are Not Deleted
Dec 22, 2008
Is the guest account 100% safe for the most part as long as they aren't running a file with a known virus or something?
Say a guest is making a text file or something. Can they save it where it's not deleted etc?
I don't want them to be able to do that at all. I want to make sure there is nothing they can do or store crap anywhere

I bought this new MacBook Pro a month ago. When I try logging into my guest account, it froze. I had no other alternative but to get out of it by pressing the power button. Then I tried open a new user account to see if it also has the same problem. Unfortunately it did have the same problem - froze after I logged in. I had done a harddisk check, there seemed to be no problem.

I just made a TM backup of two user accounts (A & B) on one iMac.I now want to delete the files and accounts from the iMac and create a new user account.(A & B shared this computer and it is now going to be used by a third person alone. I don't want all the additional unused A & B account data clogging the hard drive.) If I delete the original A & B user accounts, will I still be able to access the backed up files? How?

I had been trying to install software updates for about a week and each time after I typed in my admin password in the prompt, the prompt kept shaking as if the password was incorrect (which it wasn't because it's the only password I ever use so I know it by heart and the caps lock button was not on). I tried going to my System Preferences page and clicking on the Accounts button. All of the other buttons seemed to work just fine (Appearance, Desktop & Screen Saver, Dock, etc). But my Accounts page took too long to load (it was blank) so I just figured my computer was being slow since it hadn't been shut down in a while. I usually just let my computer fall asleep so that when I use it again, I can just shake the mouse and it would be ready to go. I guess that is what triggered it. I was on the computer last night doing my usual stuff. I didn't download anything funny, didn't try to do any more updates, etc. But my computer was running extra slow so I decided to restart it. When my computer got to the log in screen, my administrator account wasn't showing. I have 2 accounts, the admin and one titled "Guest". It automatically took me to the Guest user log in. But when I entered that password it kept saying the password was incorrect. I know the password and I didn't have caps lock on or anything so there is something wrong with my user accounts and passwords. How do I fix this? More specifically, how do I fix my user accounts and passwords when I can't log into my computer through a standard account and my admin account isn't even showing up?

Reports of a potentially critical Snow Leopard bug that can erase a user's account data have continued to surface since the operating system's debut [Updated with Apple official comment].
Since Mac OS X 10.6 launched in late August, numerous reports online have detailed the issue, which is triggered by logging in and out of a guest account on a Snow Leopard machine. Upon logging back in to their regular account, users will find that it has been wiped of all data.
The issue has prompted numerous threads (1, 2, 3, 4, 5) on the Apple Support Discussions, with reports suggesting the issue cannot be reproduced with any exact certainty. Apple has yet to publicly acknowledge the issue.
"When I logged into my MacBook Pro this morning, it was as if I had logged into my Guest Account and not my standard user profile," user parshallnet said. "No icons on the desktop, the desktop wallpaper was the default 'space' photo and not the one I had assigned, no documents in the docs folder, apps behaved as if I'd never opened them before."
The issue was initially reported when Snow Leopard first launched, but complaints have grown as adoption of the platform has continued. Monday, Engadget highlighted the issue.
A month ago, CNet detailed a potential fix for the issue, which is reportedly caused when users have had a guest account enabled for login prior to the install of Snow Leopard. The easiest way to avoid the issue is disabling the guest account.
If afflicted by the bug, the home folder can be restored, though without a backup, the loss of data is likely permanent. If a user has Time Machine running, they can restore their Snow Leopard installation while holding 'C' at startup and choosing "Restore from Backup" from the "Utilities" menu.
Update: In a brief statement, Apple acknowledged the issue Monday evening, according to CNet
"We are aware of the issue, which occurs only in extremely rare cases, and we are working on a fix," a spokesperson said in a prepared statement.
Since its launch in August, Snow Leopard has been received with positive reviews and strong sales. A quick update, Mac OS X 10.6.1, was released soon after, but apparently did not provide relief from the guest account bug.
Mac OS X 10.6.2 is currently in beta and only available to developers. It has nearly 150 general focus areas.

So it's finals week, and I restarted my computer, and when it came back on, it went to the login screen. My computer never goes to the login screen. I looked at the accounts that were present, and none were mine. Only the "Other..." button was present, so I clicked on this and attempted to manually type in my account name and password, and I was unable to log in. I was able to access the computer through the System Administrator login (root name and master password). My harddrive still shows my name under the User Accounts, however when I go into the System Preferences to make changes to my accounts, only the root account shows. All of my information is still here, but is there a way to restore the account, so I can go back to using my machine with all of its settings? I'm running Leopard 10.5.5 on a Macbook Pro 17", 2.16ghz (1st generation).

The other day I decided to reinstall OSX from scratch (Lion). So, formatted and reinstalled. Reinstalled all the programs and updates I wanted manually, then used my TM back up to recover my iTunes, documents and pictures. This is where problems began as my new account (Alex Mason) was named exactly the same as the old one present in the TM backup. Migration assistant created a new user account (Alex Mason2). So I have my new set up in one account and my old documents in another! So I got into the USER directory and transfered them between accounts. So far so good.
Then came the issue of removing the Alex Mason2 account. At first this was straight forward. Go to the user accounts pref pane, select Alex Mason2 in other accounts and press the "-" sign. Done.
But then, it reappeared! And this time I couldnt get rid. I found this on the support forum here: [URL]...and I followed it to the letter. It describes exactly my situation, that a 2nd user account created because of a name clash when using migration assistant may reappear after initial deletion.
After doing so, the account Alex Mason appeared in its place in the other accounts bit on the pref pane. This confused me because I was logged in as Alex Mason so how could that also be another account? It wasnt there before, so why now? I exited the pref pane to see if that sorted things out.
Then I couldnt get back on the user accounts pref pane as OSX said it could not load it!. In the hope of sorting things out again, I restarted the iMac only to be greeted by a grey screen (with the cloth texture) and a user + password dialogue box that were empty. Putting my credentials in resulted in a loading icon in the password box and that was it!! Nothing. Nada. Can't log in.
I tried repairing permissions (of which some were repaired) and got the same result. I restored via TimeMachine and deleted the second account again. Same again, it disappears but the login name still appears at the log in screen and shortly after, the user re-appears in the user account pref pane again and this time I can't use "-" to delete it. I am wary of trying the above link again. What did I do wrong?! and how can I deleted that second account!

MacBook Pro 15" mid 2009..After my 2 year old had a tantrum and threw a toy at my Mac which unfortunately had a drink next to it-with a consequential spillage-my MacBook is rebelling.
Issue: keys Cap lock, R and 4 do not work and Mac boots only in safe mode. Account is pw protected-my pw begins with R and have no guest a/c active. Do i need a new keyboard or is there a cheaper way?

So my friend, whos' computer this is, deleted my account and all its files associated with it (when he was mad at me lol) but didn't realize or forgot that there was a text document on there with atleast 30 hrs of work on it and i hadn't managed to back it up on another system yet. so is there any way to recover this file? I have filesalvage running currently and tried diskwarrior but that didn't seem to be the proper tool to use. Any mac freaks got any advice? It'd be really nice NOT to have to repeat 30 hrs of work, but at this rate its already taken 10 hrs or so just trying to recover this file.

I was installing an upgrade for one of my applications, and i had to reboot my i mac. After reboot it was stuck on the white apple screen for maybe a half an hour, then on the blue login screen for maybe 5-10 I went to sleep after 5.
When It restored there were no user accounts, and I had to create a new one. All of the programs were available, but I had to authorize and all that kind of stuff.
I just wanted to know if there was a way recover the deleted user files on the mac?

When I access the user/groups window I can unlock the window to allow for changes. In order to delete a standard user you need to highlight the user you wish to delete and then click the minus sign in the bottom right hand corner. But, I cannot highlight the user I want to delete.
