Mar 5, 2008Picked up a nice 1.5 15" PowerBook and I was just curious what OS would run the best? It currently only has 512mb, but I'm sure I'll throw another 512mb stick in it.

Oct 20, 2006As you read this im haveing a terrible time on a sawtooth 400 that was hit by lighning in a storm and is now plauged with freezeing problems.So regretting to turn back to windows i made a quick steal of ebay for a dual 500 g4 + a super drive that burns dvds at 16x!! Im not no power user by anymeans i chat with adium x and use safari and do an occasinal bittorrent (legal of course) but the orignal problem with the g4 400 before the lighning struck it was VERRY SLOW! and I HATE waiting and it thought because of the dual prossesers it would move it along (and Low End Mac says pick a dual 500 over a single 700) so tell me if im gunna need to upgrade it.

Apr 13, 2007since buying my mbp, my powerbook has become pretty much redundant for anything other than word processing and internet use, at the moment its super slow because it has virtually no hd space left, so i have backed up, and want to reinstall the os, clean it up a bit and get it running the internet superfast to use when i am travelling, keeping my mbp on my desk for the rest of the time. I have a copy of both panther and tiger that came with the powerbook (i bought it a week before tiger came out and apple sent me it for free!), but it is currently running panther. now its a stock powerbook 12" 1.5 Ghz with 512 ram, and it wont need to run anything too complex: just word/safari/idvd/itunes, however it would be nice to have dashboard (i have got used to it on my mbp), but not essential.
I don't want to spend any more money on this thing, but want to know which would be faster...i have heard that tiger puts more strain on ram, but also that powerbooks run faster with tiger than with panther...which of these statements is true?

Nov 15, 2006I am leaving for a week long trip and many parts of it will not be able to run the computer off of the powercord, which is a problem because I get about 40mins of wordprocessing use out of it when I run the battery alone. Can someone explain what the significance of these levels are for my Powerbook G4 15'' (Alm) 1.25GHz, namely the cycle count and full charge/remaining capacity?

Jan 19, 2009Well i recently had to downgrade my powermac g5 with radeon x800xt to tiger....and now everything is updated..and when a box's option is clicked, a small box remains on the screen in the color of the thing clicked or highlighted. There is now a strange yet quiet squeeling noise coming from my computer only when i scroll. Also if i leave the mouse on the middle of my web page when i scroll, the words it travel over leave a tail of distorted boxes the size of the mouse arrow behind it. I dont know if its a setting, or if something hardware wise is failing, because it didnt happen when i had leopard in hours ago.

Mar 10, 2009I just obtained a PowerPC G4 Tower, but there was no hard drive in it. Because of this, I put in an older 20 gb hard drive I had just laying around. It is from an old Windows PC I had, but I don't know if thats a problem or not. Anyways, when I try to boot from the Tiger disc, nothing happens. I have tried holding down C when I turn the mac on, but that doesn't help at all. I just always get the mac icon with a question mark in the middle of the screen. I am just wondering, is this anything to do with the PC hard drive I put in the mac? Or is there something else that I am doing wrong? I just want Tiger to be installed on the computer.

Jul 9, 2010I have an original Tiger 10.4 install disk for a G-5 computer. When I boot up the computer with the install disk everything is fine. However when I run Disk Utility the only option I have for formatting the partitions is MS-DOS or free space. No Mac OS X formats are offered. If I run a 10.5 Install disk I am offered the options in Disk Utility to use Mac OS X HDD formatting. Any one have any idea what I need to do to get DU in Tiger to format the HDD in Mac OS X format? BTW, the HDD's in the unit are pre-formatted in Windows NTFS if that makes a difference. I just want to make sure Tiger supports Mac OS X format before doing anything else.

Nov 16, 2010I have two macs(one is macbook, another one is G4 cube). On my G4 Cube OS 9.2 is running and it is up to date. (last firmware update installed) I want to install mac os x tiger on it but i can not. I tried almost everything but i couldn't install yet.
Firstly I downloaded tiger.dmg and burned into a dvd, then inserted to the Cube. It can read the DVD but couldn't run the tiger dmg file. so i could not install in this way.
Then i connect the macbook to my Cube via firewire and I inserted the installation dvd to the macbook but the result was same. cube can read the DVD but couldn't run the tiger dmg file.
Then I changed the host and target. I saw G4's harddisk as an external harddisk on my macbook's screen and i found the OSInstall.mpkg after I mounted Tiger dmg file on desktop. I choosed as installation destination G4's harddisk and installed the tiger on it. Then i open the Cube and I opened startup disc on os9 to choose os x as startup system. Though Tiger's system files are on the G4's harddisk there is no choise as os x in the startup disc menu so i couldn't start tiger.
What can i do for install the tiger on my Cube?

Mar 4, 2007I've got a flat panel G4 iMac, currently running 10.3.9. I'm having ongoing problems: frequent kernel panics, weird things happening to the display (display breaks up into a jumble of lines on occasion). I've done the usual troubleshooting: disk utility, apple hardware test, reboot in Safe. I want to try reinstalling the OS to see if this helps.
Problem: I don't have the install discs for OS 10.3.9 - about a year ago the logic board was replaced and I had the service swap in a new hard drive at that time and they loaded 10.3.9 when they did this. I don't want to buy 10.4 at this point - with Leopard coming out soon from what I understand, also want to make sure I can get the computer running properly again before I throw any more money at it. I've tried using borrowed discs to install 10.4, but I keep getting a message stating: "you cannot install this software on this computer". This has happened with 3 different borrowed install discs. Two of the borrowed discs were for iBooks, one was for a G5 iMac.

Oct 20, 2007I have a G3 iBook, 600MHz, 2 USB slots, 1 firewire slot, DVD ROM/CDRW with 640Mb. I bought a Tiger DVD which on the front says: "Mac OS X Tiger. Includes Xcode 2. Install DVD. Version 10.4.6." It came as new, inside a Mac OS X box (no grey installation discs - just 1 black DVD). But...it won't install on my iBook. In fact, it won't even mount on my desktop! I've tried holding "C" on startup but that won't help. Incidentally, I can't repair permissions (I just get "No valid packages (-9997)") but that seems to be the only thing going on with my Mac! Any ideas to get this show on the road?

I just turned it on one day & it showed the apple logo as usual, it went to the Starting up screen, and then it just disappears and i'm left with a blue screen, and the mouse sometimes appears for about 10 seconds and then it goes away. i've tried formatting, installing an earlier operating system, using a boot cd, booting from an external hard drive, everything.

Dec 21, 2007I have an iMac G3 DV Special edition which I bought off of craigslist with 400MHz, 384MB of Ram and a 13GB hard drive. It came with Mac OS X 10.1.5 and I'd like to upgrade it to Tiger. I have the install DVD and when I insert the disc, the iMac sees it and asks me to restart the machine so it can install but when I click ok and it restarts, nothing happens. It just boots back into Mac OS X. I've tried holding down the C key and setting it to boot the disk in the System Preferences area but nothing.

Dec 29, 2007My superdrive does not work, therefore I cannot just do the normal erase and restore. I dont have access to any other external drives.
I don't neccessarily need a fresh install, in fact i'd like to sell it with some of the current applications remaining on it, however I would like all of my personal data to be erased. I dont have financial records or things of that nature on it, but I dont want any passwords or logs of emails and things to remain. Is there a way to restore or delete all personal info and files so that the ibook will be safe to sell?

It came with panther and it has the latest updates.. Is it worth it to get Tiger for it? Will I notice a huge difference? Things are alright now, but I'm used to my MBP zipping through everything. I know it won't ever be as zippy as the MBP, but will Tiger make a huge difference?

i also found that i could install tiger from another mac with a DVD drive using firewire disk mode...so i looked around my things and found an old firewire cable and hooked both machines up (imac and my mbp) and restarted the imac holding down the t key and so then the firewire symbol shows up on the imacs screen...well from what i understand the imac's HD is supposed to show up on my mbp desktop...this never happens.And ive tried it multiple times...so i dont know what the problem is..and ive tried it using OS 9 and 10.0 the OS's the machine came with..
PowerPC :: Ibook G3 Won't Install Tiger?
Nov 7, 2008my problem is the following, I have an Ibook G3 which Disk Drive is busted. So i'm trying to install Tiger To it (PPC) by using Target Disk or Disk Target (w/e) mode connecting it with my Mac Book Pro. I restored the Ibook with the disk utility on the MBP putting as source the installer for tiger which I ripped off the img file from the the retail version I bought. And so I rstored it to the HD of the Ibook, takes about 15-10min(Maybe less) and done. When I turn on My Ibook it automatically boots into the installing of OS X process. Everything goes smooth until I get to the part that I have to choose the destination but I can't choose anything because the HD for the Ibook won't show, it doesnt show any possible destination for me to save to. I have read the read me files and everything on the software and about the option botton on the "destination" part but the botton cannot be selected. I read something about the formatt of the Ibook for tiger to work and I have it in "Extended (Jornaled)" and i'm upgrading it from Mac 9 classic, but the drivers for mac 9 aren't installed since I accidentally (w/o knowing) erased everything on the hard drive the first time I did this with the Disk utility.

Nov 25, 2008I installed a new 250GB WD ATA hard drive in my 450mhz Sawtooth G4. The computer sees the drive, it works in target disk mode but nothing will install.
When I try to install Tiger from the DVD or the 4xCD set it gives an error after a minute of installing and says to restart. The Tiger disks crash my G5 as soon as I try to boot them. When I try to install Leopard via target disk mode from my G5 it says it cannot be installed on this computer.
This isn't one of the computers that has to have the OS installed in the first 8gb of the drive partition is it? I don't want to install 10.3, too much of my software isn't compatible with it. It was running 10.4 fine on the old 30gb drive.

Jan 20, 2010I recently bought an iBook with a 1.33 GHz processor, 1 GB of ram, and a 60 GB hard drive. It's still 3 to 8 days until it gets delivered, but I was doing some thinking, and couldn't decide between Tiger and Leopard. It comes with Tiger and iLife (not sure what version of iLife). My brother has a Leopard install disk that he says he'll lend me if I want to install it. I am leaning toward Leopard, but only because it has a nicer GUI, in my opinion at least. I'll probably use Tiger on it for a week before deciding to whether upgrade or not.
