OS X :: Office 2008 Unable To Save To Windows Shares On Snow Leopard

Nov 24, 2009

Word 2008, Excel 2008, and Powerpoint 2008 are unable to save to windows shares when saving a file in compatiblity mode such as a .doc file. It saves fine saving the files in the new xml format such as a .docx file. I have double checked the share permissions and they are fine since I can save in the new document format and in other applications such as dragging and dropping files in finder. The error message I get when trying to save to a windows share from Word is as follows....

OS X :: Snow Leopard With Time Machine - SMB Shares Not Working

Aug 28, 2009

On 10.5 I used to have time machine backing up to a remote smb share using the time machine hacks to create a sparsebundle image on the smb share. No longer working with 10.6 - always get an error. Why apple couldn't make time machine get along with smb shares natively out of the box is simply beyond me.

OS X :: SMB Shares In Snow Leopard - Automatically Load At Startup

Sep 14, 2009

I am running Snow Leopard on a new Power Mac which is part of a windows network. On the Windows server, there are a couple of shares that I would like the mac to use. I can manually connect to them and browse ok, but what I would really like to do is have them automatically load on startup and display on the desktop. I have tried connecting to the them and then dragging them into the login items, but on restart, they don't appear on the desktop.

OS X :: Unable To Access Shares On Windows 7 PC

Feb 16, 2010

Basically, I'm trying to get all of the files off a hfs partition on an external harddrive so that I can reformat the drive. The problem is that my Windows machine is the only one with enough space to do this, and, of course, Windows cannot see the hfs partition, and I can't remove it. So I've been trying to copy the files from my Macbook Pro across the network. Unfortunately, this is the part that has proven difficult. My Windows machine does not show up in the list of shares in Finder, so I need to use Go > Connect to Server. While this works initially after first booting up.

It seems to disconnect after a few minutes and all attempts to reconnect just display a connecting box for a short while, and then an error message; "Connection Failed. There was an error connecting to the server. Check the server name or IP address and try again." I can ping my Windows machine, so there is nothing wrong with the IP, or the connection on a basic level, but for some reason I cannot connect. I've tried disabling Firewalls on both machines, and that hasn't helped. One thing I did notice is that the connection seems to remain stable as long as I do not access the network on my Windows machine. For instance, earlier this evening it disconnected as soon as I tried to use the internet.

MacBook Pro :: Cannot Connect To Windows SMB Shares After Sleep

Apr 9, 2010

After my MBP has hibernated, I cannot connect to my SMB shares on my Win7 media center. I can relaunch finder, turn airport on and off, etc, but it will not connect to the server until after I restart the computer. It sees the Win7 box in Finder and lists it under "Shared," but even though I have a button for "Connect As," pressing it does no good. Finder just says "Connecting" and will never get any farther.

If I use the "connect to server" dialogue in finder rather than the shared list in the sidebar, the effect is the same, it come up with a "connecting" message that never succeeds and I cannot close.

The computer is a late 2007 MBP running 10.6. Its connecting wirelessly to an Airport Extreme, and the Win7 box has a wired connection to the Airport Extreme. Since it will reconnect just fine after a reboot, I'm certain the problem is with the MBP, and not the server or the router.

Applications :: Any Way To Easily Browse Windows / Samba Shares?

Oct 11, 2010

Anyone know if there is an application that can easily browse windows/samba shares? Finder works okay, but I find it annoying that I have to mount everything in order to get to it. One thing I miss in Windows is being able to type / hostname somewhere and getting to the share. Now I have to open finder, open the network dialog box, type in the hostname and wait for it to connect. It'd be great if there was another application that would allow me to quickly browse to all these shares.

Intel Mac :: Cannot Connect To Windows Home Server 2011 Shares

Feb 3, 2012

I am having difficulties connecting from iMac to Windows Home Server 2011 shares. First of all it takes so long time to discover the share in iMac, which it's called "mediaserver". After finding it I cannot connect and gives "Connection Failed: message. If I choose "Connect As.." option I wait some time and then pops out with an error:

"There was a problem connecting to the server "mediaserver". The server may not exist or it is unavailable at this time. Check the server name or IP address, check your network connection, and then try again."

If I try from Finder -> Go -> Connect to Server ... write in Server Address : smb://mediaserver it fails. But if I write the IP address, like: smb://192.168.1.42 it works after couple of tries. If I try now to Make an Alias for the share I get "The operation can't be completed. An unexpected error occurred (error code -8060)." I have updated to Mac OS X version 10.7.3.

MacBook Pro :: Applications Not Showing In Spaces On Snow Leopard

Mar 22, 2012

I have looked in the forums and haven't found anything specific to my issue. I can't tap F8 because it starts  music in my iTunes, so I set it up with right click on my mouse (yep using a mouse). When the spaces applications show up on my screen in squares,  only Firefox shows up,and the others show up as blue squares with nothing in them. How do I get them to show up? I have the applications assigned to different spaces, not the same one. I have spaces enabled as well.

I went to Disk Utility and see if it could be repaired but the drive is not even showing up there. Does this mean the ministack was fried by the outage or is there another way I can save it? And yes, the finder preferences are on for external drives to show up on desktop.

Jun 27, 2012

I have an iMac - Mac OS X 10.6.8

Out of the blue the sidebar on the left of the finder just disapeared.

I searched and foud some fixes like deleting .plist file and clicking the oval button on the top right of finder, and nothing works.

I know when I click on the oval it's suppos to appear, but it's not. The only thing that happens is that the top part hides and appears. I just want to get my finder the way it was. I actually have folders there for quick access and now it's gone.

OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Messages In Sent Folder Showing Wrong Date

May 19, 2012

I have an odd Mail problem which I can't seem to solve. Yesterday I unchecked my "automatically set date and time" box in order to set the date back to May 7th for a particular printing task I needed to accomplish. I printed the pages but forgot to re-check this box so my system date was wrong for all of yesterday. I was hunting for a sent message later in the day when I realized what I had done.

I was going to report that my sent folder had stopped working, but, naturally, the messages were neatly filed exactly where they were supposed to be, sorted to May 7th, and not May 18th. Luckily I did not send a lot of messages yesterday! My question: Is there a way to manually change the date of a sent message? Is there a way to edit the header of a sent message? (Note to self: If you change the system date change it back)

OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: 166Gb Of Free Space Not Showing In Finder

Jun 6, 2012

my Mac started saying I need to free up space on my Startup Disk. I was suprised, but as I've been doing some film work, I just thought it must take up even more space than I thought. Anway, I free'd up loads of spaced, I moved all my film files to an external disk, deleted them from where they were, and emptied the trash. I've got rid of other things like Internet cache and downloads, basically, I know i have space now. However, my Mac insists on saying I only have about 2Gb free. On another site, someone recommended something called Disk Inventory X, which gives a visual picture of what files etc are taking up space on the Mac. I ran this, and low and behold I have 166Gb free. The screen shot below shows the big blue square of free space. If you can zoom in, it shows this as something outside of the home 'Tiger' thing, under Users - .tiger, as though its partitioned or something?! I don't really understand how Mac's work under the hood of pretty buttons etc, so I'm a bit stuck now.

why my Mac can't see or let me use all this free space?

I am running Snow Leopard 10.6.8. It is a 13" mid 2009 MacBook Pro 5.5, 2.26 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 4Gb 1067 MHz DDR3 if that's of any help.

OS X :: Won't Fix Snow Leopard Sleep Freeze / Slow And Showing Blue Screen

Jul 30, 2010

1. When closing the lid or pressing the power button the computer freezes, the fans start spinning fast it stays like that until it drains the battery. This happens every time.

2. Start-up times are very long, like 3 or 4 minutes. This also happens every time.

3. Now after a fresh snow leopard install it doesn't even start up completely, as it stays showing a light blue background and I can hear the music of the introductory animation.

4. Also, the keyboard is unresponsive at the login screen, but the mouse cursor moves and the display goes to sleep normally. Clicking anywhere with the mouse also produces no effect.

5. It seems to work OK in safe mode.

The macbook worked ok with the factory installed Tiger. The SL DVD is OK, as its installation has been tested on another Mac. The machine's advanced hardware test passed successfully. Resetting Pram and SMC did not solve the problem.

Windows On Mac :: Does Windows 7 Require Snow Leopard To Be Booted 64bit?

Nov 20, 2009

I'm new to using Windows on a Mac but need to do it now for some video rendering applications that have transcoding, filtering, effects (like VirtualDub) that are only available on a PC.

I have a 17"MBP (3 months old), 2.8Ghz Duo, 4Gb RAM. I recently upgraded to Snow Leopard, was excited about 64-bit though I'm not an expert, I just heard it would be faster.

I didn't realize SL doesn't boot 64-bit anyhow, that you need to hold "6" & "4" at startup to get it to boot in 64bit mode. This surprised me because I figure many people assumed SL was 64bit! Just getting it to boot properly was a hassle. The 6 & 4 trick didn't work for me.

I had to edit the preference file which wouldn't save at first either because of permissions (I had to drag it to my desktop, edit it, save it, then drag it back to the folder and enter in my administrator password).

Only then did I realize my brand new eSATA Express Card didn't work in 64-bit mode. Upsetting because I just bought the hot new Sonnet Tempo card for $200 that claims to work with Snow Leopard. So until it works I'll be running 32bit mode on my Mac.

But if I want to run Windows 7, does this mean I can only run the 32bit version?

OS X :: Windows 7 Vs Snow Leopard?

Jan 22, 2009

As the previous segment detailed, Windows 7 and Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard aren't competing directly; instead, each is part of competitive strategy to either grow the Mac user base at Microsoft's expense, as Apple has been doing, or in Microsoft's case, to stop the hemorrhaging market share losses and reclaim leadership of desktop operating system development. How big is Windows 7? Microsoft's goal with Windows 7 is to lift Vista's derailed train and put it back on the tracks. Windows 7 itself is internally called Windows 6.1, essentially Vista Service Pack 2 (Microsoft is also preparing a scaled down Vista SP2 for delivery shortly before Windows 7 is released). Microsoft's executives have made no secret of the fact that Windows 7 is an incremental improvement to Windows Vista, with CEO Steve Ballmer calling it "Windows Vista, a lot better," and saying, "Windows 7 is Windows Vista with cleanup in user interface [and] improvements in performance." Mike Nash, Microsoft's vice president of Windows product management, called Windows 7 "evolutionary" but also a "significant" improvement upon Vista. The company has oscillated between describing it as either a major or minor release, depending on who the intended audience was. In October, Computerworld wrote that at the release of Vista, the company's roadmap suggested a series of alternating releases between major new operating system developments (like Vista) every four years, and minor updates in between.
