OS X V10.7 Lion :: Why Is The Cd Read Speed So Slow
Apr 29, 2012
Brand new iMac 27" 2.7GHz 16GB Ram running 10.7.3. CD read speeds are very slow...something like 5x. Importing audio CDs to iTunes is extremely slow. Error checking is turned OFF.

I'm finding my MBA rev b to be quite slow opening apps, I bought the 1.6 ghz 120gb model.
It seems like everything's rather slow to open. I have 30gb free on the hard drive, iTunes, Safari (5 tabs) TextWrangler and mail open all day.
If I ever need to go into Firefox it takes a fair while to get up and running. I ran some xbench scores and it seems very slow on the random reads, oddly it was much quicker writing to the disk than reading.
Is their anyone in the know who can confirm that this is normal? Or if not, is there anything I can do to give it a boost?

I have an early 2009 macbook, with 320 GB hard drive and running OS Lion, after i upgraded my os to lion, the computer ran perfectly normal, although a little bit slower than running snow Leopard. However, recently I notice my mac become very slow, got rainbow wheel even when i open the safari. then I use the black magic to test the hard disk speed, it appears the read and write speed is only a little over 30mb/s.
i have recently change my keyboard at apple store, I notice my mac slow down after that, do you think it would related?

I have a 2010 Macbook Air. Why does my new USB 3.0 flash drive only get 12Mb/sec speed, but my old 2.0 gets 480Mb? The new drive is backwards compatible.

I purchased OS X Lion this afternoon and started the download, 5 hours later it's only downloaded 1.5gb and it's saying it's got another 9 hours to go!!?? The App store is downloading at 105kb/s (that is Bytes per second, not Bits per second). If I download something from iTunes or dropbox I get about 800kb/s. Why is the App store so slow?

Sorry for the title but I couldn't think of anything better. Hopefully I'll be able to explain my problem. I have a MPR 2.53 ghz, 4 gig ram, I'm using Safari 4.04. I am using the WIFI at a guesthouse in Thailand (but I had the same issue in China, Vietnam ...). I ran a speed test and it said download 7mb/sec and upload about 1mb/sec. I have an "app" that says bandwidth in 1.3kb/sec out 1.0kbs. I thought maybe it was Safari so I downloaded and installed Firefox. firefox gives me similar speeds. When I downloaded Firefox though I had a download speed of over 1mb/sec. But as soon as it finished downloading the speed went back to around 1kb/sec. I have rebooted my MBP many times. I did some Google searches but didn't find anything helpful.

Is there a way to tell which one is slow, if anything is going slow? I have an extremely old PC which is normally ok for most things, but gets bogged down if I am doing too many things.I was so annoyed with our national real estate site after they changed the format that I wrote a letter once a long time ago.. and I was ready to let them have it again, listing all the reasons why it is so bad and so much worse than the original.
Today for the first time, I accessed the site (mls.ca) using my new iMac. It was like lightening speed, comparatively speaking.Wow, suddenly I knew why the mls people hadn't changed their new format. But then I started going to other sites.. like airmiles.ca for example, and it was slow as heck... and stalling.. etc.
How would I be able to tell whether it is an internet slowness or the computer being slow?

There's been a large emphasis on the sequential read/write speeds of SSDs, but in many day-to-day usage patterns, the random read/write speeds are a better benchmark of performance. I'd like to make a chart summarizing all the different SSDs out there and available. But I need your help. Can those of you with SSDs run a benchmark and report the numbers here so that I can compile everything? Here are the steps:
1. Download Xbench 1.3 at [URL].
2. Open the program and run the "Disk Test" for your SSD drive.
3. Note the numbers under the Random test, for all four parameters of small and large writes and reads.
4. Repeat the test a second time to make sure that the numbers do not change. Accept the second test if the values are <10% different from the first test.
5. Screen capture the window by holding down command and shift and 4 and the spacebar. Click on the result window and that will save as a png file on the desktop; the default is Picture 1.png.
6. Report the values here with by attaching the screenshot of the result window. This will give us other needed information like computer and SSD model.
I realize that there are weaknesses to this survey. Xbench is only one benchmark. SSD speeds will vary based on usage. Etc. In the end, however, the variability should be sufficiently small that I think we'll be able to compare different SSDs well.
I'm going to get us started by posting my results with an Intel X-25M on a previous generation MacBook Pro. Ironically, my result will probably get thrown out because the SATA 1.5 GB interface actually limits the SSD read speed...

My Mac Pro came with a 500GB boot drive when I ordered it 3 years ago. It has been used most days and now runs Snow Leopard (for scanners and a canopus video box that don't work with Lion) and Lion. I did a write & write test on the drive recently at both were approx 60 - 65 MB/s. I have another drive in my machine I bought last month, replacing an WD drive that failed in less than 18 months. This new drive (complete same as replacement is a WD Caviar (Black) 1TB 64Mb drive. This drive tests at speeds for 110MB/s. This may seem an obvious question, but will I notice much difference if I swap the drives around and have the newer drive as my boot drive. Also, does having two OS on a HD slow the drive down also?Â

I just switched from Snow leopard to Lion and i don't like the way that Lion has the mail preview set up as a 3 column vertical format. I thought in Snow Leopard you could change the set-up so it's either horizontal or vertical, but I can't seem to find that option in Lion. I want to have the list of my email messages in the top, horizontal window and the preview of the selected message in a horizontal window below. Am I missing this option to change the view format from vertical to horizontal somewhere?

I am having a number of problems with my 14th month old Macbook.
My wifi is slow whilst my room mate who uses a PC gets a much faster speed.
My general processing speed is slowing down even though i have done a system clean using "Clean My Mac"
Safari is like a snail so I have given up completely and have been using Chrome which initially was great but the past few weeks it also is slowing down, behaves strangely and wont let me sign into either my Twitter or YouTube but again my flat mate who also uses Chrome but on a |PC has no problem with these.
I am wondering if I have a virus or well honestly dont know what is going on but things are not working as smoothly as 6 months ago and this is not what I expected from a MAC having had years and years of using sluggish PCs.

I remember reading that the iMac DVD drives are set not to exceed a certain speed so that they remain quiet, but I would rather the occasional disc burns take less time than be silent and keep me waiting. Is there any way to speed this up?

I have a PowerMac G5 running tiger and am having painfully slow internet connection speed. There are 2 comps hooked to the router from the modem(my MAC and a PC), then another Router between the MAC and an XBOX 360. The other comp has consistently fast internet speed. I pinged [URL] and got the average above, no packet loss. I have:
-reset modem and both routers
-contacted my ISP all ok there
-bypassed the both routers and still slow(this leading me to think its a software-settings problem on my end)
-reinstalled OS
still slow. besides preforming a seance I am clueless, which isnt saying much.

My ISP is Mediacom (I do NOT recommend them), and I use a cable modem (RCA) straight into my iMac, 24" 2.4GHz, late 2007 Al, running 10.5.6 and Safari 3.2.1.
According to my iStat pro widget, my network in fluctuates between 1kb/s and 5.2Mb/s. Mostly the slow speed. Mediacom is sending someone out on Monday. Is there anything I can check or do in the meantime. The iMac is the only computer around here, and I've rebooted the cable modem until I'm sick of it. Even rebooted the iMac.I used to think TW was bad until I had to use Mediacom.

I have a base model June 09 13" Macbook Pro running 10.6.2, during normal use CPU temp. is fine, lower than my previous Macbook 07 edition. However, when I use handbrake, the temp spikes very quickly, I know this is normal as the processsors are being used at 100%. However, unlike my old Macbook, the fan takes a long time to spin up to counter the increase in CPU temp. I see 101 degrees centigrade and the fans are still at 2000rpm. After a few minutes they react and slowly increase to maximum. I am not comfortable with this temp, my old Macbok used to only get to 85 degrees centigrade. I have read about SMC fan control, is there a way to set this so that it increases the fan speed at lower temps without having a detrimental effect on battery life.

I recently upped the RAM memory in my 2008 vintage MacBook Pro to 8GB. I have not seen a significant increase in speed and it rarely uses more than 3GB of memory. In fact in some instances it seems slower. How can I boost the performance and take advantage of using the increased RAM?

I'm running the macbook pro 2,3 GHz intel core i5 version 10.6.8. Me and my friend are on the same wifi connection, but his macbook (thats 1 year older than mine) downloads 10 times faster. I'm getting around 0.24 Mbps while my friend gets around 1,8 Mbps. My internet is really slow and I have trouble opening a lot of internet sites. I wonder if ive done something to my settings so that the download limit is limited or something.

I have a 2011 mid range mac mini and love the machine, however I have noticed a few things. First off, it seems to be a bit on the slow side when multitasking. I have the standard 4 gigs of ram installed, but running programs like MS Word and Safari at the same time, the machine seems to struggle a bit. Also I have noticed when doing a lot of file transfers via USB, the fan will kick up to high gear for a few minutes and then drop down. Is there something wrong or is this normal? I'm doing a time machine backup of 120Gigs, have safari open and activity monitor open. Activity monitor states 1.16Gigs free, 792MB wired, 961.4MB active, 1.12GB inactive, 2.84GB used. VM size is 150GB, page ins are 962, outs are 380kb, swap used is 10.5MB. Right now the fan seems to have slowed to a mid range mode of some sort and is not in high gear.

Is this normal or expected performance on file transfer via wireless? If so what can I do to increase the performance? Settings on the wireless router?
