We are working via Xserve everyday. Sometimes, the performance can get very poor. Is there anyway to boot up the performance?
I am thinking of Indexing Xserve via a client workstation by using the mdutil command. I have the server mount on my desktop and everything is ready to go. But when i hit the command, i get an error saying "cannot set index on /volume/job"
I noticed my "spotlight" icon has a pulsing dot in the center of the magnifying glass icon....when I click on it there is a progress bar and it is perpetually "indexing" my hard drive.
Whats this mean? Is my HDD going to fail? Its been going on like this for months. Running Drive Utility, Techtool or Disk Warrior doesn't fix it.
I fixed permissions and repaired the disk off the Snow Leopard book disk, problem persists.
I just added a 1 Terabyte drive for both backup and regular file storage. I partioned the drive so I would have a volume purely for backup. Backing up to the drive was taking forever, i searched and found index is the problem. I also found a couple ways to stop indexing. I utilized the touch function, but the .metadata_never_index doesn't seem to take at all. I have since utilized the sudo mdutil function for just the backup volume and this works. However..... Will this permanently leave indexing off on this volume? The drive backs up my laptop so it's disconnected frequently. Also does anyone have a guess to why the never index function didn't work? The syntax looked to be perfect.

Whenever i ran the ls function
ls -a /Volumes/Obsidianice Backup
to check it it returned
No such file or directory
This happens quite frequently on my mac book pro and my iphone.Is this normal? If I exit safari and restart, safari seems to be able to find the server or if I just click on a different saved bookmake and then go right back to the page it cannot find the server for, it works.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm having problems navigating the Silpada website [URL]. Safari let's me get as far as to enter my log in info however does not allow me to log on. I get the error "Safari can't find server". I have the same exact problem using Opera. Firefox will let me log on usually but I can only navigate the website for about 10 minutes then it starts with the same type of error. I can access and navigate the website just fine from my pc, which has the same internet provider as my mac. I have emptied caches, reset the browsers, unchecked the web proxy, turned off all firewalls. Any suggestions on what to try next?

View 7 Replies View RelatedI have an airport extreme that was working perfectly until a few months ago when I started having problems going to a web site [URL] that I have visited numerous times in the past. I get the following error message: Safari can�t open the page [URL] because it can�t find the server �golfsmith. When I disconnect the Ethernet cable from the AEBS and connect it directly to the computer I am able to open this site. My Macbook Pro responds the same way wirelessly and when I go to another friends house I can connect to that site with my MBP. BTW my friends cannot connect to that site via my AEBS but can via their home router
I have reset the AEBS to factory defaults several times, restarted my Comcast cable modem then AEBS then iMac in the order specified. I have also tried changing my DNS settings to both opendns and DNS Advantage but I have the same results with both.
I also have a dashboard item that mysteriously stopped checking local gas prices and may be related to the problem. Also I suspect that sometimes when I click on a link in a search engine and get that message is the AEBS problem again.
I have a Mac Mini Server with OS X Server. I needed to reformat my disk and reinstall the Server OS. The disk was reformatted ok. Now when reinstalling from the original disks it asks: " enter mac os x server serial number". I do not have the server serial number (I did not know that I should have written it down from the about box before reformatting). I have kept all items that were shipped with the computer but I cannot find the serial number. It is not on the disk sleeves or any documentation that I can find. How do I find (or get a new) os x server serial number?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm having a strange issue after upgrading to Leopard. When I try to open certain pages in Safari it instantly gives me the "Safari can?t find the server" message. When I try to open the same page in Firefox at the same time it opens normally. For many pages (like this one) Safari is working fine. My connection seems good and this is happening on reliable sites (currently Safari won't open apple.com).

First off, when I try to go to a website, Safari will continuously load the website for about a minute, until the "Page cannot be displayed" or "Safari can't find the server" page comes up. Then, if I try to go to the website again, it works. Just like that. This happens up to twenty times daily. Also, if I try to view pictures on Google Images, it will not load all of them. I don't understand what the problem is. This has been happening for months now. Ever since I've upgraded to Safari 5, it's ten times worse. I can't explain why Safari does this. I have a 2.53 Ghz, 4GB RAM, and 250GB MacBook Pro (2009). I haven't even had the laptop for a year. I have Internet security on my Mac (Intego), but don't know if that could contribute to the problem.

I'm just setting up a new Mac Mini (5,3) Server but I can't find 'Workgroup Manager' installed, only the 'Server' app. Is this the difference between the Mac Mini and a 'real' server?Â
The server app seems to do most things but I want to create all the user accounts with a pre set password but force each user to create their own password on first login, I can't seem to find this option in the 'Server' app. I can do this in Workgroup Manager on my old 10.4 server that's being replaced.Â

When I go to the Mail program/Preferences/Accounts I see a screen that has three sections. The third section offers "Outgoing mail server (SMTP)" but offers no box allowing a server number such as 587... Why is that option missing? What is likely causing this sudden request for a password?Â

Safari regularly gives me error that I'm not connected to internet/can't find server. I've gotten so fed up I've downloaded Firefox and don't have the issue with Firefox. Also, my other computer running Internet Explorer doesn't give me these errors. I've tried resetting safari, emptying cache. I'm on Mac OS X, MacBrook Pro laptop.

I have a MBP and I recently did a clean install up to Snow Leopard, and then added all of my movies and files about 150GBs onto my mac. And it was all working perfectly, but now for the past two days I have not been able to use Spotlight as it says it is indexing.
Any ideas why or how this might of happened? I have recently brought iDeFrag and did a quick online DeFrag after I installed windows 7 in boot camp.
I use spotlight alot for finding files and not having it is.
How can I tell if it is still indexing and how long does it take ona clean and jerk install that wipes the HD ? I was experiencing VERY choppy genie efects and dock animations for about 2 hours after the install of Leopard.... oddly seems to come and go WTF

in previous OS versions you could tell when spotlight is indexing by clicking the spotlight icon in the toolbar and the dropdown would tell you. now in yosemite how can we tell when spotlight is indexing? because i use mail.app a lot and search won't work properly until the indexing is done.Â
View 3 Replies View RelatedMy Spotlight doesn't seem to be working properly. It has been indexing for the past couple of weeks and is clearly stuck. It actually says that it is 'estimating indexing time' but hasn't been able to move on from this.
Time Machine has also stopped backing up, and I think that this may be a linked issue.

I use Carbon Copy Cloner to clone my internal HD to my External 3 times a week. I have CCC set to erase the external, and copy everything over each time it backs up. The only problem im having is I can't stop Spotlight from indexing/searching my external drive. Adding the drive to the Privacy tab in the Spotlight Prefs works, but only until the next backup, after the next backup, and a restart Spotlight indexes my External drive again. It's annoying cause when I search for files I get 2 of everything. How the heck do I stop spotlight from searching my external?

I use Bootcamp so I'm constantly swapping from Leopard to Windows and when I get into leopard, Spotlight indexes and the computer is slow until it finishes.
Is there any way to pause or stop the spotlight that happens after rebooting? It annoying that it keeps me from using Spotlight until it was done, and recently I was trying to use EyeTV as a DRV, and the video kept freezing, I suspect due to spotlight in the background. It is very frustrating to not be able to fully use my computer for some time after rebooting.
I tried "sudo mdutil -i off" and it didn't seem to have any effect, although I didn't stop the mds process after trying it. I did try killing mds before entering that command, and it just came back after a few seconds.
