I'm thinking about selling my MBP and before I do that I want to know which is the best way to reformat my MBP so all of my data is completely erased? I don't want the next owner to be able to see all my info and whatnot.
It seems some aspects of my main user account in snow leopard is currupt... need to create a new admit account and move over to that one as my primary account. what is the safest way to do this? I need to move a bunch of files over, and perhaps some preferences and such. Should i create the new admin account, change the permissions on all of the files i want to transfer so that the new account has read/write on them, log in to the new account and transfer the files over?
What's the safest way to copy a 6 gb .dmg file that has 4 gb of data on it, to another .dmg file with the same name, same data just changing to 5gb size.
Rather than having 2 laptops, I would like to use parallels to bring xp onto my macbook pro, the only reason I will be using XP, is that alot of the video control digitzers I have to operate are pc orientated. This will be the only reason I will be using windows, my concern is that I hear so much about windows and viruses.
I am currently building a RAID setup for storage of iTunes and other files. I have 4 hard drive spots to work with. I have been throwing around a few options. safest way of doing this would be great!
Option 1: 4 x 1.5TB (2x1.5TB RAID 0 + 2x1.5TB RAID 0 Clone) What would be the worst case scenario with this? if one hard drive fails I would just use the clone or vice versa. Option 2: 4 x 1.5TB RAID 1 with no clone. Which of these is the better option? or is there an option 3?
I installed Perian the other day and decided I wanted to get rid of it. I just dragged the icon from applications as well as the dmg to the bin. Is that the correct method to 'uninstall' something?
After doing that I can still see Perian from the other section in settings as well as if I right click on a video it gives me settings for perian. How do I properly uninstall something and get rid of it from everywhere?
What is the best way to back up ALL info on my MacBook Pro in case it is lost or damaged? It appears that iCloud does not back up documents and photos? It seems iCloud's main purpose is to share info between Apple devices, not intended for backing up the computer. Should I just get an external hard drive?Â
Info: Mac OS X (10.6.8), back up macbook pro 10.6.8
Ever since I updated to Snow Leapord on my mac book pro the computer has started to lag badly. I have used onyx to see if that could fix anything but still running slow. Since I used to be a windows user I am used to just trashing everything and doing a fresh install. I have no idea if this is the best option for a mac. Before I think about reinstalling I would like to know how I can check what could be slowing my computer down. I only have a basic knowledge of macs so any advice where I should look would be great. (I am a power user of PC but got annoyed of it just not working)
Okay so I found a perfect set of icons I wanted to use for Word, Excel, Powerpoint... But I can't seem to change them. Using that copy&paste method doesn't work, and because it's not a packaged app I can't use Candybar.
I use my iMac for my media business, however I will be on the road more this year, and so I was going to put all my files, apps etc over to my work's MacBook so I can get things done for my clients while I'm on the go. Of course the thing is all my apps, files etc are lodged in the iMac, so I thought that the only way to avoid manually reinstalling stuff (and then have to move it all back to the iMac again) was to clone the user account or drive? Is there a way that this can be done?
I've got a couple of different third party OSX applications that are freezing/crashing whenever I click on an icon in the respective application's toolbar. The PID (213) and error are the same for each application. The system log reads:
2/2/09 8:06:37 PM Assignment Planner[213] The '-[NSSegmentedCell _setSegmentedCellStyle:]' method is deprecated. Please use -[NSSegmentedCell setSegmentStyle:] instead. This message will only be reported once.
I've googled this for some time but only come up with forums about Coco software writing. This appears to be a problem with my prefs or something given that it is spread across several applications.
I've tried: - Deleting related pref files - Permissions repairs - Reboot - Fresh reinstall of effected programs
I thought it would be interesting as well as a good learning point for new Mac users whether you are moving files from your old PC to Mac or Mac to Mac. Explain if you would what method you are using such as Time Machine, or manual backups, or utilizing Mobile Me for your misc backups and how did you use them. What other methods worked for you? Be specific if you don't mind. I think this would be educational for all concerned. Let the Discussion begin:
Does anyone know of a method to remove the software that comes pre-loaded and is immune to erasure even after formatting on USB external hard drives. The software is called WD Smartware. It mounts a virtual CD and pops right back onto the desktop even after "ejecting" it. It is similar to the U3 software that comes preloaded on flash drives.
I've been having a remarkably difficult time finding a "quick and easy" method of doing precise and/or easy screen captures from a DVD.
Things I've tried:
VLC: Works, but recent builds have been crashing like crazy when playing DVDs, so are nearly unusable for that. (Anybody else been experiencing this?) Also lacks the ability to capture a precise frame, since there are no "step forward/back" controls.
MPlayer OSX Extended: Left to its own devices, can't handle playback of many commercial DVDs--it stops playing at the first title change, so is useless. If I use FairMount to unprotect the DVD I can play the .VOB files directly with it, which is semi-functional, but it also lacks precision--no single-frame step commands, and if you do a screencap when it's paused you actually get a frame or two later. Also, this leaves you guessing what part is in what .VOB file, and it chokes badly on multi-angle video.
DVD Player + screencap app: This also works, but I really just want the DVD frame, so I end up having to manually crop out the window border, which is time consuming.
My goal is to come up with a smooth enough workflow I can do, say, a half-dozen screencaps from a bunch of titles quickly, so my primary goal is efficiency. (It's for movie reviews, so it's even completely legal under fair use, if probably anti-DMCA due to the stupid encryption loophole). Secondary is to include deinterlacing and being able to more precisely select a frame.
i have just bought a used grey macbook and on my girlfriends macbook the superdrive sucks the disc in almost straight away whereas on my macbook i have to push the disc almost all the way in before it actually sucks it in. Is there anyway of fixing this and making it suck the disc in like it should do?

I am trying to download an app and it keeps telling me to enter a another payment method to the one i already have but i don't have one i only have one account what should i do?
In Lion, is there a way to merge or sync the address book on my mac with iCloud addresses? The data in these is different and I only want to use iCloud. I have about 1,700 addresses, so it would take forever to do manually.
