OS X :: Safari Won't Open...it Stopped Bouncing Without Opening
Jul 18, 2005
So, strange thing happened today - I got home from work, came downstairs to my mac, and clicked on Safari in the dock.
And nothing happened.
So I clicked again. Ahh... there was the reassuring bounce from the dock. Until it stopped bouncing without opening.
For some reason or another, Safari will no longer start running on my computer! I reparied permissions, trashed the prefs, etc - to no avail. It's not working on other accounts on this computer either.
Any ideas on what to do? Btw, for what it's worth, I can access the iTMS just fine through iTunes... don't know if that will help diagnose the problem or not...

I have a problem with my MacBook with applications 'bouncing' in the dock and not opening. I took the macbook into the genius store and they said it wasn't a permissions issue they thought it was some 3rd party programme I have loaded.
I have loaded Snow Leopard onto both my iMac and Macbook, the same apps work fine on the iMac but on my MacBook i am having to reinstall nearly all my apps to get them to work. The problem started a few weeks ago with leopard and I was hoping that with Snow Leopard it would sort it but as I used Time Machine to import all my data after upgrading I seem to have brought the problem into Snow Leopard.
The only thing I have done around the time this started happening that I can think of is that I downloaded one of those programmes that help free up space on the mac by deleting all unnecessary languages (I just need British English) . could taking languages off interfere with so many apps?

Some apps like VLC, Skype etc. won't open. They show up in the dock and starts to bounce, but all they do is keep on bouncing for 1-2 minutes. I started up my Mac in SafeMode and then the applications worked just fine! So i think its some thirdparty application that messes with my apps.

As of today, Safari only opens links by bouncing them to the reading list. I have to go find them in there and click on them again to view the link. Why are the links not opening directly in the browser window, the way you'd expect? I haven't changed any prefs or anything like that. I'm on Lion.

Whenever I launch Pages, the application opens pretty much all the documents I've worked on. I take care to close all the windows, hoping that they won't launch again next time I start the application, yet they do. I can't find a setting in the preferences or Settings to disable this behavior.

None of my apps will open. They just keep "bouncing" on the dock. I have tried resetting the SMC and going into Utilities and doing the repair disc. I was going to just re-intall the OS, but my disc is scratched and doesn't not.

I'm using an iMac(seen in sig.) and I had installed Photoshop, and while of course a little slow due to Rosetta it worked. Then maybe a week ago, it just seemed to stop opening up and crashing immediately. I'm running OSX 10.4.8, everything is properly updated and I've reinstalled photoshop a few times to no avial. The problem didn't seem to occur after any change, I might have just not noticed it though.

So my IMac running 10.6.3 has developed a bit of a problem. When a launch certain apps, the icon just bounces and the app never launches. I end up having to force quite and restart to get the app to work. Other apps freeze up (sarfari and chrome) and I have force quit and restart. then there is VLC which launches plays media then freezes. All of these are solved by restarts. Seems if i let the machine fall asleep, then all these bugs resurface. My first solution was to create a new user and delete the old one as my "backup" username seemed to work fine. this did indeed solve many of my problems but now different apps have developed bugs. Should I just reinstall the OS?

I want to add a file to the Desktop, and I want to open it with a specific text editor (emacs) whenever I click on it. So far, I made that file, copied it into the Desktop directory, and I tried to set the application which opens it via a right-click "Open-with" menu item. But when I try to select executable for that file (again, emacs), that application is greyed out and I can't set that application to open it.
So, how can I do it. When I click on the file, I want a window to be opened with emacs running and editing that file.

Safari on my iMac (10.7.4) has been acting up recently. Very slow to begin loading my opening Tabs and CPU intensive. Today it has just stopped working at all. It just sits there with high CPU use and nothing loads into my opening tabs. I've tried Google Chrome and it works fine with the same tabs. Tried downloading the latest Safari and installed it, but it didn't help. Don't know what to do next. I've seen all the warnings about not deleting Safari. Is there any alternative to reloading Lion? Can't I just delete Safari from Terminal and then reinstall from my Safari download and import my exported Bookmarks?

In System Preferences -> Keyboard -> Keyboard Shortcuts -> Application Shortcuts (Mail.app) I have set up ⌘+Enter to send mail. It works great...until I use certain Mail commands. For example, if I use Shift+⌘+H to view the full headers of a message, the next time I try to use ⌘+Enter to send a mail it doesn't work. I have to quit Mail and then when I restart ⌘+Enter works again. Same thing happens if I use Shift+⌘+B to bounce a message. I can duplicate this every time so it's not an intermittent bug. It's a minor annoyance, but I wonder if anyone else can confirm it happens to rule out that it's something specific to my Mac. I'm on OS X 10.6.4.

I have had this MacBook 2.2 about three years or so. I have been using Safari Version 4 Public Beta (4528.16) for some time. It has been working OK, however recently I found a problem: Browser comes on as normal, it opens the email page but then, it stops responding to the clicks. I can not write a "new" message or anything else.
To deal with such situations I had some time ago installed the Camino 1.6.6,It works OK, a week or so ago I saw a prompt to upgrade my Camino to 1.6.7.
I did what one normally does, I down loaded it , pressed the button to 'install and run' it, but instead of doing what I thought it should do ,a dialoge box came up to tell me that some error has occurred, I should get in touch with the person who owns the computer. Well it did not say that in those words but it meant that.I am the person who owns it, uses it and I had put in the correct password, when it required.
It has happened a couple of times. I assumed It will resolve itself as glitches do,but no it has not. I have just tried it and the issue persists. Why has the Safari gone sour, and why I can not update the Camino 1.6.7.?

My safari has stopped loading pages, happened 2 days ago. Firefox works fine but safari for some reason will not load pages.
My home page is topsites which comes up fine, but when i click on one of the topsite windows it begins to load and the status bar at the bottom reads, connecting "..." or loading"...". I'm also finding i cant upload videos to youtube or vimeo and my weather widget on dashboard also doesn't load quickly, im guessing its all related. I have seen the widget update but i have not seen a webpage load on safari as it was taking too long.
I cant get a hold of apple support they are closed.

From one day to the next, the Safari pdf visualizer stopped working. Now when I open a pdf link, I only see the 'grey' safari windows, plus a strange gibberish when i scroll the Safari window. The pdf is there, because I can save it or open it with Preview. I do use occasionally Adobe Acrobat pro (9), which I know to be a potential source of the problem. However, the adobe pdf plugin (which is mentioned in previous threads) was never installed.
What I have already done, and did not work:
1. erase all internet plugins (in ~/Library, as well as in /Library/. As I mentioned, the Adobe plugin was not ther)
2. deinstall Adobe Acrobat Pro 9, just in case
3. reinstall Safari from scratch
4. remove the ~/Library/Safari folder so that it would be recreated
5. remove all Safari extensions

I updated my MBP last night (6/1/09) with the latest updates, including the one for garageband. Soon after the update, comcast was out for the evening...so no online connection for the rest of the night. After the connection was lost, I tried opening up garageband and all I got was a bouncning garageband icon on my dock. I looked at the error report created and it did mention something about my airport base station. So I was hoping the application not opening was a result of my lost connection. I am not home now to try again. I just wasn't aware that you needed to be online to start GB or is it the fact that it was the 1st time since the update that I opened it?
