OS X :: Improve IMac Performance?

Nov 2, 2009

I've got an iMac that's a couple of years old, and time (along with software) has taken its toll on the speed of my iMac. I've run Onyx, I've downloaded a utility that lets me set time machine to run once a day instead of every hour, but I'm still not happy with some of the slowdowns I get. So, my question is what will give me the best performance bump?:

1 - Clean install of 10.5
2 - Add more RAM (currently I only have the 1GB it came with)
3 - Upgrade to 10.6
4 - Something else I'm not considering

MacBook Pro :: How To Improve Overall Performance

Apr 17, 2012

I am starting to do more and more projects recently everything from illustrations, 3d motion graphics, video work, compositing etc... The laptop seems to be doing okay but I know there is room for improvement. I'm definitely going to max out my ram to 8gb. I'm thinking of doing this option bay thing here [URL].

And putting in a ssd as the main drive and keeping the 750 gb for storage purposes. That or possibly just upgrading the ram and the hard drive to something higher than 5400rpm. Should I just start with ram upgrade, should I just upgrade the hard drive to something with higher rpd or go solid state. Also what brands do you recommend?

Would it give a notable increase in terms of FPS? or responsive?

OS X :: How Can I Improve System Performance Without A Fresh Install

Sep 28, 2009

My system (sig) has been relatively sluggish for a few months now. Right now I've only got Firefox, Snak, iTunes and Adium open and it's just prodding. It has a decent amount of ram that should be able to handle relatively easy computing like this.

So, my question is, what can I do? Should I just re-install? I wouldn't really mind doing that. I have all day off, and fresh installs are fun but I have a good amount of stuff on here. I have an external where all of my important stuff is, so a fresh install wouldn't be a bad idea in that way.

This machine is pretty old but I'd like it to be snappy like it once was.

Are there little things I can switch off or something?

Mac Pro :: Core Video Can Improve Flash Video Performance?

My PowerMac plays most small videos (640p) on YouTube just fine, as well it does an OK job at playing slightly larger videos in Quicktime. I would like to not have to worry about Flash any more. With the new 10.1 beta 2 I notice a nice boost in performance, almost tolerable. If I install a graphics card that supports Core Video will it free up the CPU? How can I tell if a card supports Core Video? As well, what cards do you recommend? Is it difficult to flash a graphics card to work with OS X Tiger in a PowerMac G4?

IMac :: Photoshop Performance 27 Inch IMac

Nov 4, 2009

I have a new 27inch base model iMac that comes with 4GB ram and a 4670 256mb Radeon graphics card. I noticed that when I copy/paste images in photoshop cs4 and drag the images, the pasted image usually gets blocky and moves in slow motion when i drag it. My friend has a Mac with a 512mb video card and 4gb of ram and has no such issue. I'm wondering if the difference in VRAm is what is causing my sluggishness in Cs4

My question is: should I have opted for the 512 model graphics card? I have another week or so to return my iMac. Or is this a RAm issue, and should I upgrade to 8gb of ram? I guess I'm wondering how much of a difference video memory makes on system performance. Thanks!!

I know there have been threads about this topic already, but I haven't found a single one that suits me. I just purchased a new i7 and want some framerates and a decent idea of what to expect when I get home and start using this bad boy. I don't do any real heavy gaming - mostly just old school titles...quake 3, counterstrike, escape velocity (kidding). I plan on playing some starcraft 2 and was mostly curious if I would be able to run the game on utlra at native res. What sort of framerates are you all seeing with sc2?

IMac :: Finding Best For Game Performance?

Nov 8, 2010

I currently use a macbook pro, but it's getting on at 3 years old now, I never use it as a portable device and I'm desperate for a more powerful iMac.

In terms of performance I need something that can play the latest games - WoW and CoD specifically - as smoothly as possible. At the moment I'm drawn between the better 21.5" mac, or the 27" with the same settings.

1st Question: I'm fairly sure the 21.5" would play the games well, but if I upgraded to a 27" screen, would the games play slower as a result?

2nd Question: The 21.5" iMac comes with an i3 processor. Is there a big difference between the i3 and i5 in terms of performance (specifically, again, for gaming). Would it be worth getting the i5?

Is there a better option? The 4GB stick costs about 10 dollars more but would be more beneficial in the long run because I would be able to upgrade to 10 or 12 in the future sine there will be one more slot open if I wanted to, or but the 4GB stick in a new computer. Or is there a problem or performance issues with having 3 slots only occupied?

Windows On Mac :: Bootcamp Performance With New IMac?

Jul 31, 2010

I just bought a brand new i5 quad core iMac. I installed Starcraft, and I have to crank the settings down in order to get a decent frame rate, so I thought I'd give Bootcamp a go.

I installed Win7 64bit and then installed the drivers from the DVD which came with it. I started up the Starcraft 2 installer and 8 HOURS LATER, it was still at only 60%.

Steam also seems to have issues, it will halt with a "This program is no longer responding" window, and then randomly spring back to life a few seconds later.

The system also feels really sluggish. I've not been able to benchmark anything on it to see if the system is really slow, or if it's just my perception as all the modern games I have are in my steam account.

For some reason when I shutdown, Windows also seems to hang on "Shutting down". It does not exhibit the same behaviour when I launch the boot camp partition through VMWare.

IMac :: Upgrading Processor Due To Slow Performance?

Aug 27, 2010

I've just installed an SSD in my new iMac 27", see here. I'm fast learning though (diglloydTools and other commentators) that once the application has loaded the SSD isn't involved very much from there on, so there are the same old performance problems. I'm finding in Firefox/Firebug where there is a large DOM (nothing exceptional) performance is still woeful.

So, baring in mind the Core i7 processor is under $200 and it would appear to have been possible to upgrade the iMac's processors in the past, does anybody have any advice for me? What parts will I need, have you done it and what was your experience, any common problems with doing this, are the parts themselves upgradeable (the quoted link only suggests they are) etc.

IMac :: Performance Of The Quads Compared To C2Ds

Nov 25, 2009

I know this have been discussed like many times but I've still some queries. Currently I'm using a Early 08 iMac with a 2.8GHz processor with 8800GS graphics for stuff like handbrake, aperture, CS3 & some Final cut express. I'm experiencing some lag in aperture when working with raw from my 500D (ard 2 - 3secs). My parents are also looking for a new computer as their 7 year old Celeron has just called it a day. They're looking to take over my current iMac. Hence looking at the new iMacs which I ordered earlier this week an i7 (not even shipped yet).

Just like to ask if the i7 will be substantially faster for my day to day usages or it it just ok get the base 27" with an upgraded graphics processor? BTW, how much faster is 4850 compared to my 8800GS?
