OS X :: OS Installed From Disc Vs A Clone Copy?
Oct 16, 2009
Is there any special kind of whamma-jamma that might make installing your OS (and applications as well) onto the HD directly from the installer discs versus copying a clone of that system onto your HD any better than the other? Or are they both equally rock solid as far as your computer is concerned?

i don't have a backup of my macbook - 10.5.8am also in process of reassembling my old iMac G5 ALS - 10.5.8 also.Appreciate that from a boot disk perspective then the intel is a guid format and ppc is on apm.Is there anyway to have a single external disc to backup both.
ideally i'd just plug it into the firewire port and use carbon copy cloner on a regular basis.

What would be the best way to apply back the clone created by Carbon Copy or Super Duper to Mac Pro
1. Boot from Mac Pro and then restore from the clone, or
2. Boot from the clone and then restore

I'm about to partition my WD passport into two section . It's 120 gigs and I'm going to use 100 gigs to back up all by media on my mac (pictures music video) and then I'd like to have a 20 gig section for extra flexible storage/transporting files from computer to computer, including PCs. So carbon copy cloner says the drive has to be formatted to HFS+ but in disc utility I don't see HFS+ under partition/format. also for the smaller partition what would be the best format for what I described above?

I bought a Retina Macbook a couple of days ago, and rather than migrating with Setup/Migration Assistant from my old MBP (2.26GHz, running 10.7.4), I wanted to start fresh & manually migrate the stuff I want to keep for the new machine. My intention is to wipe the old MBP with a fresh Lion install for my wife. As a precaution (in case I forget something crucial) I made a Carbon Copy clone of the old HD, saved onto a 2TB Seagate Backup Plus external drive. The Seagate is USB3, with optional adapters for Firewire and Thunderbolt.
I formatted the drive & setup 2 partitions, both MAC OS Extended (Journaled), GUID partition, one for the clone, the second for general storage, and the clone process went smoothly. I checked that I was able to boot from the clone on the old MBP, with no problems. However, when I attempt to boot the clone on the Retina MBP, I get the grey screen & no entry sign. Same if I try through system prefs, startup disk. Why the clone will boot onto the old MBP, but not the Retina?

I recently had to wipe my entire hard drive. I made a clone of my Windows 7 partition before doing so, but am now unsure about how to restore it. Is it possible to restore without first installing Win 7 from scratch, i.e., is there any chance I could partition the drive using the Boot Camp utility then simply copy the entire file system over?

I have a MacBook from Christmas 2009. I'm very happy with it. I am using an external HD, a Western Digital Passport with 500 GB for my Time Machine backups. The MacBook seems to have a 250GB hard drive, but no firewire connection. So far I have used up about half of my WD Passport external with Time Machine backups. I have about 6500 photos and almost 12GB of iTunes music, and I don't want a catastrophic failure to cause me to lose it all. In addition to the Time Machine backup, I'm considering using Carbon Copy Clone with an additional external hard drive for a complete backup. I'm not very Mac or programming savvy, so I'm looking for an idiot proof method. What do you guys think of CCC, and what size/brand external HD do you recommend? I think CCC has to have an HFS+ formatted drive. I don't want to keep it connected all the time, but I would like to occasionally clone the MacBook harddrive so I always have a fairly current bootable backup.

I have a Macbook running on snow leopard and I wanna upgrade my internal hard drive as it is currently too small. I downloaded Carbon Copy Cloner and cloned my entire hard drive to an EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE. Now, I have that new internal hard drive from wester digital. What do I do with it? replace the current internal hard drive with the new harddrive and then how do I get the data from the external hard drive with my cloned data to the fresh western digital? Do I boot first from external hard drive etc? I am not sure what to do now?when I was given the option which hard drive to clone (or which part of the hard drive to clone) there was also the option to clone "Install Disk". I don't need to clone that, right?

I want to burn a back up disc for my own purpose and unfortunately only have a dvd writer on my PC. Can someone advise please as I can't seem to find an option on my PC saying show hidden files etc, if that's the case?

Consider this my first ill informed, new to Mac OS question. Just received my new iMac today and while poking around it seems I do not already have iLife '11 installed, but a previous version of the suite. How do I go about updating? Should it be included? Do I have to actually wait to get a physical disc?

I phoned up AppleCare and they are kind enough to mail me back two recovery discs free of charge (they are white instead of grey, and printed as replacement discs)
Today I tried to boot from the disc to see if it works, after I chose the language, there's a msg saying "Mac OS X cannot be installed on this computer" and the two options that I have is to restore from Time Machine or restart.
So I checked the version of the disc in OSX, I discover that it's actually 10.6.1, instead of 10.6.2 which ships with Core i5/i7 iMacs.
Then I phone up AppleCare yet again to see if they have send me the correct disc. The guy asked of my serial number and after a while of checking, he said they have sent me the right disc. They say the discs that come along with the core i5/i7 are actually 10.6.1 as he sees from his system.
If I want to do a clean install of OSX I have to delete and format the volume first, he said.
I am not convinced, how come a recovery disc version could differ from the one that's actually installed?

I create my own music and sometimes people ask if they can have it on a CD. Since I really do not want people to be able to rip it to their computer's I have denied these requests. However as the demand apparently grows and more people start asking I feel that I would really want to be able to share my music with them, securely. What I would like to do is burn a cd containing my music that people cant rip. I know there will always be some way of doing it, but fore the average computer user preventing mediaplayer/itunes from being able to rip the music will be enough to keep them from doing it.

looking for a solid DVD cloner or copy program so that I can back up (replicate) DVDs I own onto disc. I also want a program that would allow me to copy certain segments and chapter to create new disks.semi-dummy level would be great as I'm not a real techy or media person.I've tried trials of both DVD copy (mp4converter software studio) ---unfortunately the trial doesn't give you full functionality (gotta question the logic here) and Fast DVD copy 4.1

Installed a new 750GB drive into my MacBookPro 5.1 Couldn't get Winclone to make image so I was forced to start from scratch with a new XP installation.
My MBP is partitioned 25%Mac & 75%XP with bootcamp and I have the old drive in a enclosure connected with a firewire. So all of old files are on the external drive now.
After installing XP I have no internet connection, drivers etc... However if I boot up on the mac side everything works fine. (I cloned the mac os already with Carbon copy).
So can I just copy all my old drivers over to the new drive? If yes how and if no how do I get them installed on the new harddrive. The MBP came with everything preinstalled.

I think I have found a flaw in OSX 10.6.4 file copying..I normall back up my files, by dragging from a folder on my HD to an identical folder on my external HD.The folder I am copying has 86 files in it, but there are only about two dozen new files added since my last back up.I have been telling it by the dialogue box, not to replace identical files in the back up folder, and clicking the check box to apply to all."but when I press the dont copy button, in the copy progress box it says it is copying 86 files. WTF is going on...!@#$%^&*().
