Applications :: Don't Have ILife 11 Installed - Wait To Get Physical Disc?
Nov 18, 2010
Consider this my first ill informed, new to Mac OS question. Just received my new iMac today and while poking around it seems I do not already have iLife '11 installed, but a previous version of the suite. How do I go about updating? Should it be included? Do I have to actually wait to get a physical disc?

I've been told that if you buy a new Mac it will show iLife '11 as installed in the Mac App Store so that you can then install the iLife '11 apps on your other macs without having to re-purchase iLife '11 on each computer. I have a 2010 MacBook Pro and a 2011 MacBook Pro and I've signed into the Mac App Store using the same account on each computer but the iLife '11 app still shows as being purchaseable from both computers. Any advice on how to get this to show as installed so that I can install it on my 2010 MBP without re-purchasing it?Â

I am considering purhcasing iLife 09 to upgrade from iLife 08 that came pre-installed on my early-2008 MacBook Pro, as I like the new iPhoto features, (the iLife app I use most frequently out of the entire bundle), but I was wondering if by doing so there is a chance I may lose any files.
For those that did the same 08 to 09 upgrade, did you lose an individual photos from your library, albums altogether, events, slideshows, etc.?
For those that didn't lose them directly in iLife/iPhoto, what about on the HDD itself, and vice versa?

long time reader, first time poster. I know this topic has been beaten to death - but I've read all the post and have not found an answer for my question.
If you have iLife 08 installed and just installed a new copy of iLife 09 - does the following happen?
1. iLife 08 gets removed.
2. All Data from iPhoto 08, iMovie 08, iDVD etc, gets transferred to the new application.
3. No Importing is required to move any of the data over the new version of the software. It just works as if you didn't even have iLife 08 in the first place.

A baby managed to get its hands on one of my very important grey iLife restore discs. It appears to be severely scratched, though I do not have access to my mac at the moment to make check on whether it is working or not. Nonetheless, in an effort to salvage it, is there any way to make an identical copy for backup purposes? As in, rip the contents of the original DVD and then burn them to a blank DVD?
I am not financially prepared to pay some ludicrous price to get a replacement from apple, and would like to try everything I can before I resort to... other means of obtaining iLife.

To anyone who has bought iLife 11, how did you upgrade from 09? I cannot seem to find any documentation regarding this procedure on Apple's support site.
Do you first have to uninstall 09 and then install 11 or can you do an in place upgrade? By this I mean, can you simply install iLife 11 over top of iLife 09?

I did a spotlight launch of imovie and i clicked on it, and imovie 08 is still in my system. Would it be safe to delete the imovie 08/ idvd 08/garage band 08 so it does not interfer with 09. I just dont wanna loose any of my info, i just dont want both on the system, getting confused with them opening up.

When the recent ilife 09 (8.0.1) update appears in Software Update people of both ilife 09 and ilife 08 reported that it appeared for them. My question is, is it safe to apply this update for those who are on ilife 08?
I've just checked my Software Update and found the ilife 09 update, and I don't have ilife 09, I only have ilife 08.

Is there any special kind of whamma-jamma that might make installing your OS (and applications as well) onto the HD directly from the installer discs versus copying a clone of that system onto your HD any better than the other? Or are they both equally rock solid as far as your computer is concerned?

I phoned up AppleCare and they are kind enough to mail me back two recovery discs free of charge (they are white instead of grey, and printed as replacement discs)
Today I tried to boot from the disc to see if it works, after I chose the language, there's a msg saying "Mac OS X cannot be installed on this computer" and the two options that I have is to restore from Time Machine or restart.
So I checked the version of the disc in OSX, I discover that it's actually 10.6.1, instead of 10.6.2 which ships with Core i5/i7 iMacs.
Then I phone up AppleCare yet again to see if they have send me the correct disc. The guy asked of my serial number and after a while of checking, he said they have sent me the right disc. They say the discs that come along with the core i5/i7 are actually 10.6.1 as he sees from his system.
If I want to do a clean install of OSX I have to delete and format the volume first, he said.
I am not convinced, how come a recovery disc version could differ from the one that's actually installed?

So I already placed my order for my new iMAC. I have a MacBook (2006) with iLife 08.
My question is: When I get to transfer my MacBook info into my new iMAC, will i encounter any problems with my iLife files being that I have iLife 08, and the new iMac's come with iLife 09? The Time Machine transfer won't bring the new iMac software back to 08 will it?
Just want to be sure before I set this up.

So I bought Leopard family-pack and installed on 4 Macs (and de-installed one). All installs were "clean installs". And all yielded Leopard WITHOUT iLife products (iPhoto, iTunes, etc.).
Now people tell me that they also did "clean installs" and iLife was present afterwards.
The only difference I can judge is that I used a family pack whilst the others used a "single licence" pack.
Can anyone provide some light into this?

I'm starting to get the upgrade itch again, with the added "pressure" of my cousin looking for a new laptop that will last 2 years or so. She's looking at the $999 MB, but my Santa Rosa 15" MBP with almost a year's worth of Applecare left seems to have roughly the same specs, and I'd sell it to her for ~$500. I'm still trying to figure out of it's a good idea or not, but I'm leaning ever-so-slightly for the new laptop (15" mid/high, possibly 17"). As they say, always put together a pros and cons list, so here's mine:

Is there any reason to wait several months for the next OS update? I presently use Snow Leopard on all my machines, but using ICloud on my IOS devices is pushing me to a download of Lion. I just don't want to pay for it again in June or July.

I wiped my computer, and then I installed Snow Leopard. When I installed Snow Leopard, no iLife programs were on it anymore. (Garageband, etc)
I have Snow Leopard as an upgrade from leopard (which came with my laptop.) It's a 15" Macbook Pro.
so, is iLife included on the original discs that came with the computer? (Leopard) or does it only come pre-installed and after/if i wipe it, gone forever?
I just want to know, if i used my Leopard disc, would I be able to get it back?
Was it only not there because I installed directly from my Snow Leopard disc?

Since Apple is releasing new Bootcamp drivers sometimes within the next couple of months, should I wait for it, and only install Win 7 in Bootcamp then? Or will it be pretty much the same if I install it now, and simply update Bootcamp when the time comes? What I mean is, could the current drivers have any adverse effect on the installation of Windows 7? If so I would rather not install now. But if not, I might as well install it now and just update the Bootcamp drivers once Apple releases them - will it be the same?

I have created a simple Automator action which says 'when files are added to folder Dropbox>Camera Uploads, import them to iPhoto'.The problem is that as the files are added to Dropbox one at a time (by the Dropbox servers, after they are taken on my Android phone and the Dropbox app auto-uploads them), this means there is a gap of 30-60 secs between photos, and more for a video. The end result therefore is iPhoto has each photo imported as a separate 'Event', rather than all the photos imported as one event.Â
What I'd like to say is 'wait for 5 minutes after the most recent photo/video was added, before importing all the photos/videos just added in that batch'. That way instead of iPhoto receiving each file one at a time and importing them separately, Automater will wait until the folder falls silent, indicating the import from the phone has finished, and only then will it import all the photos taken as one event.Â

I have a late 2011 Macbook pro with the most updated OS X Lion. My problem is whenever I turn off the computer and turn it on I get the spinning wait cursor. It takes about 7 minutes or so before the cursor will go away and I can use the computer again. From then on it will work well until I need to access something in finder, whether its clicking on the finder icon or opening a folder - then it will appear again for 30 seconds or so (occasionally the spinning cursor won't go away so i am forced to turn off the notebook). It's not every time I access finder but its pretty close to 50/50. I backed everything up an external drive and reinstalled the operating system however the problem was not fixed and I still get the spinning wait cursor when I start up the notebook and about 50% of the time when I access finder.

I just got my update disc, but when I put it in, it just sits there cranking for a minute or so and then ejects the DVD. I made sure my software was updated first, and did a shut-down ... but it still just ejects it.
I zapped the PRAM ... and then it did hold on to the disc a lot longer, but it just cranks and cranks and then ejects. I did put in a music CD just to make sure it wasn't the CD driver, but the CD opened and played just fine. Any ideas on why iLife '11 won't install?

I am considering buying a new macbook pro and i see that there is an option to get iWork 09 with it. What i am wondering, or assuming, is that iLife 09 comes with it. However after reading this forum i have seen that iLife isn't scheduled to be released until somewhere from Jan 20th to Feb. Would ordering it now mean getting the old iLife and having to pay for the new upgrade or is it best to wait until it has definately been released.
