I'm copying the OS X tiger disc to a ext. HDD, I only have a USB external at moment. Making a backup copy for insurance on future disc problems. Can I copy it to the usb drive and then copy that to a firewire external later and it still work? If I read correctly our older machines only boot from an external firewire drive?

I want to put my old 15" PowerBook hard drive into an external case. I pulled the hard drive out of the PowerBook. And I purchased a NexStar CS 2.5" SATA to USB 2.0 external case. But the connections don't match. What do I need to do? Do I need to buy some sort of adaptor? I have a few programs on their original DVD discs that I want to put on another computer w/ a broken disc drive. In theory, can I create a disc image w/ the disc utility program, copy that file onto an external hard drive, and then put it on the other computer that way and have the program as workable "disc" (but it will really just be the image of the disc). On a side note, if I got a new disc drive on that computer, would I still be able to burn that file to a DVD disc in the future to create an exact replica?

I'm not quite sure what i need to do to successfully do this. Can someone please help me out. I Have 2 different macs that I can use to burn dvd's on but not sure if the drive can do this since I think that I might have to burn dbl layer discs. I was wondering if anyone knew how to make a WinXp installtion cd on a macbook. The family computer is a PC and it wont boot up and we cannot find the installation disc. I know I can download it of the windows website but its a .exe file.
I was wondering if there was anyway to download it onto a macbook (only other working computer in the house), and save it onto a Cd Rom to then use to start up the PC?
Do I have to copy each file individually or can I copy an entire folder to external hard drive?

Ive tried everything from the click the mouse button during restart to terminal and my imac can not eject the disc. it keeps making the sound of pushing out but nothing comes out. is there any way i cant pull it out with tweezer or will that hurt it?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI just copied a very large number of files using Finder and I discovered that some modification dates were changed. For me this wasn't a problem, but it's strange and I don't understand why it happened. I wonder if anyone else has seen a similar behavior. Here are the details:
I have a Mac Pro running under OSX 10.7.4 with 15 GB of RAM and 7 hard disks. The disks details are as follows: Internal 1 is 500 GB and came with the computer. It is my boot drive and has a variety of material. It's about 75% full.
Internal 2 is 1 TB. It has OSX 10.6.8 on it for use as a repair disk if I need to run TechTools against my main drive or if I need to run SpringCleaning. It is about 85% full and contains mainly videos of one type or another.
Internal 3 is 2 TB. It is 98% full and contains mostly .jpg files. This drive has a single root folder with 3-4 levels of subfolders. Some subfolders have as many as 5000 folders in them. The bottom level folders each have anywhere from 20 to 300 files.
Internal 4 is 3 TB. It was purchased last week because drives 2 and 3 are getting full. My intent is to copy drive 3 to 4, then copy the data from 2 to 3. I'll probably retire 2 since my SMART checks are showing problems.
External 1 is 3 TB and is used only for Time Machine to backup internal 1.
External 2 is 4 TB and is used to backup Internal 2 and 3 using ChronoSync. I'll be changing this to 3 and 4 soon.
4 days ago I installed drive 4 and used Finder to copy the root folder from drive 3 to 4. That took about a day. I then ran ChronoSync in Trial Sync mode to see if everything was OK. (Perhaps I shold have used ChronSync to make the transfer.) I discovered that about 8,000 files had discrepancies. I wrote a simple AppleScript to identify any meta data differences between the files on the two drives. It's been running for about 12 hours and I suspect it will take more than a day to finish. So far all that script has found are modification date differences. I've examined about a dozen of the files and they look OK.
Anyone seen anything like this? Any ideas what happened? I have three user accounts on this Mac Pro. The copy was made in one account with nothing else running, but I was doing a variety of work in another account. The third account was not active. I just did a better search of this forum and discovered a similar case from 2010.
So I just partitioned my drive to install Windows and noticed that my hard drive is now making that "crunching" sound that some hard drives make. It started during my Windows installation, and it happens regularly in Windows.
I also briefly hear it while OSX is starting up, but it doesn't seem to happen much in OSX. I've launched a bunch of applications and it is still pretty much silent.
Any ideas what could cause this? Could it be NTFS? I have several hard drives in my PC that don't make that sound. I am using a 17" MacBook Pro unibody with the regular 320gb 5400rpm drive that it comes with.

I just bought a LG BP06 Blu External Blu Ray Player - I wan't to move my Blu Rau Movies to my Imac. How the Heck do I do it ? The Imac sees the external hard drive ( Identified as Logical Volume ) , I can see the files on the Blu Ray disk .. BUT, what software is out there as a player / copier that can copy these movies to my computer. I don't want to buy them again on Itunes !

I create my own music and sometimes people ask if they can have it on a CD. Since I really do not want people to be able to rip it to their computer's I have denied these requests. However as the demand apparently grows and more people start asking I feel that I would really want to be able to share my music with them, securely. What I would like to do is burn a cd containing my music that people cant rip. I know there will always be some way of doing it, but fore the average computer user preventing mediaplayer/itunes from being able to rip the music will be enough to keep them from doing it.

I just got a copy of Toast Titanium 10 and want to back up my dvds. The first one i tried said that the disc is copy protected. How can i get around this or can I? It will copy, dowload or move the file, then begin making copies until I reboot. This makes it impossible to deal wit hfiles unless I want to spend a lot of time rebooting after every time, then deleting all the redundant copies.

Yesterday my PB from 2004 started to make a noise like an angry mosquito. Is it the hard drive dying on me? This is just a take-along-when-I-need-to-be-mobile computer, there's nothing there that needs to be backed up. But I wonder what the noise means.
View 7 Replies View RelatedYou know that electrical smell ... well that's what is coming from the cabinet in which I have my Mac. It's not pungent or burning, but it's there. It may just be the DSL modem that Verizon recently sent me because that did have an odor like that when we hooked it up. Most importantly though, the computer is making a whirring sound, almost like a heavy hum when it's turned on. As it runs it quiets down though. It isn't loud but it is noticeably there and it's been doing it for a long time. I'd say for about a year and nothing bad has happened .. yet. I'm just wondering if I should put any more money into it. It needs more RAM to put Tiger on it and run it more efficiently but that shouldn't be a problem. I just wonder if I should abandon ship or stick with it. It's been a great machine and isn't beat up at all. I've rarely used it over the years.

Normally I have my MBP setup in extended desktop for when I connect my external monitor or connect to my TV (DVI->HDMI adaptor) for watching BBC iPlayer etc., however I want FR to run on the external monitor/TV if one is detected.
I have an iBook G3 700 Combo Drive 648 megs of RAM and a 20 GB hard drive. Every now and then specifically when I'm running high processor tasks, the hard drive makes this wierd noise, which is a sequence that repeats over and over again. I can't tell if it is writing to the disk or reading from the disk. It makes 3 short noises, and then a long noise:
(short - short - short - long)
Try to imaging that noise. It is just the sound of the hard drive working. This will repeat itself over and over. Sometimes If I have lots of tabs open at once in safari and i open them at the same time that will happened. But after like a minute it will stop. But other times it will keep repeating that noise over and over for ever so I have to manually restart the computer forcefully. (Holding down the power button). The computer also freezes and I get that spinning color wheel.
