IMac :: How Come A Recovery Disc Version Could Differ From Actually Installed

Dec 10, 2009

I phoned up AppleCare and they are kind enough to mail me back two recovery discs free of charge (they are white instead of grey, and printed as replacement discs)

Today I tried to boot from the disc to see if it works, after I chose the language, there's a msg saying "Mac OS X cannot be installed on this computer" and the two options that I have is to restore from Time Machine or restart.

So I checked the version of the disc in OSX, I discover that it's actually 10.6.1, instead of 10.6.2 which ships with Core i5/i7 iMacs.

Then I phone up AppleCare yet again to see if they have send me the correct disc. The guy asked of my serial number and after a while of checking, he said they have sent me the right disc. They say the discs that come along with the core i5/i7 are actually 10.6.1 as he sees from his system.

If I want to do a clean install of OSX I have to delete and format the volume first, he said.

I am not convinced, how come a recovery disc version could differ from the one that's actually installed?

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Which Version Is Installed With Internet Recovery

Feb 10, 2012

Would very much like to know which version of lion will be on my system when I perform the Lion internet recovery. I assume it downloads the latest build so I do not need to update Lion again. I also assume that there will be no difference in Lion version when I perform an erase and install or just an install over the existing installation.

Hardware :: Identifying Version Of Keyboard (key Labels Differ)

I just recently bought an "apple aluminum keyboard" off of craigslist as a secondary one for work. I didn't notice it at the time of purchase, but the keys are different, such as a smaller return key and the key labels are not the same as my main keyboard which I bought at Best Buy. What this keyboard is? A euro edition? or knockoff?

IMac (Intel) :: Hard Drive Usage Reports Differ

Jun 24, 2014

My 2011 21.5" iMac has a 1TB hard drive. In the Finder, it reports 238GB used, 744GB available. But, in Disk Utility and in DiskWave analyzer, it shows 460GB used. "About this Mac" reports 460GB used with 206GB of "backup" that is not there (not invisible files, not showing up in detail reports). When DiskWave reports 460GB used, the detailed list of files & apps only adds up to 238GB - a mystery in that it cannot show the extra "used" space, but only reports free space as 539GB thus not accounting for the remainder. How can I reconcile these differences?

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Recovery HD / Bootable USB Version?

Jun 4, 2012

My MacBook Pro is running very slowly in every application. Slow load times, spinning beach balls everywhere, it's ridiculous. I think I should just reinstall Lion, but I am wondering what the best way to do it is. I made a bootable USB of the Lion installation when I installed it the first time, so I could reinstall from that. I could also reinstall from the recovery mode. What I want to know is if either option has an "archive & install" feature like in previous OS versions. I don't really want to reinstall all my software and reset preferences, etc. by just doing a clean install. If I use the recovery HD built into Lion and I do the "clean install" option, does it erase all my data and I have to bring everything back? Or does it just leave my data alone and install a new Lion OS? Does it matter whether I use the recovery HD or my bootable USB version?

MacBook Air :: Custom OS X Install With Recovery Disc?

I was installing a retail version of OS X the other day on a Dell Mini 9 and I realized you could customize the install by removing printer drivers and languages that you didn't want... saving about 8+ GB or so of space. I was wondering if the recovery disc that comes with our Air also allows us to customize what options we can include, assuming I do a fresh install.

MacBook :: Using Recovery Disc - Will I See Trackpad In System Preferences

Jun 10, 2009

I seem to have misplaced the recovery discs for my brand new macbook. I'm thinking about upgrading the hard drive to a 500 gb store bought one but I have a question about the lack of a recovery disc.

I have a family pack of leopard licenses for other machines and one to spare which I have no problem using, but I was wondering if that leopard installation would install the trackpad features for my macbook. Will I see trackpad in system preferences? Will it work just like it did?

If so, I don't really care about the recovery disc. Otherwise, I might have to invest in another one.

Software :: When I Download It, It Says There Is Already A Newer Version Installed?

Mar 23, 2009

I've been a Mac user for a few years now, and really love the apps on the Mac, and 99% of the time, never need anything thats on Windows. However, the time has come that I need to open a windows app via Darwin. Its asking me to install x11.app - which I've tried to do, but when I download it, it says there is already a newer version installed. I've never heard of, let alone installed x11.app before, so this confused me a little.

I've come onto these forums, and had a little search, to which I found out that you need to do something with the original OS disks to install x11.app via the install disk. I no longer have the install disks - I moved house 6 months ago, and had 3 boxes lost in transit, (Including my PS3, nearly 50 games a DVD player and all CD's / DVD's ) - and have never recovered them.

Is there any other way I can get this app to install?

Just a quick question; I just received a SL upgrade DVD for one of my Macs, in the post, and it had the disc number: "2Z691-6557-A". I was a bit surprised that the DVD just came in a simple paper sleeve, tossed into a padded envelope with 2nd class postage. Is this the experience of others?. Also, is this particular upgrade DVD (with the same disc number as mine) capable of erase and install?. I don't like doing upgrades, I'd rather start fresh.
