OS X :: Directory Access When Connecting Snow Leopard And Windows XP?
Apr 6, 2010
I have recently bought a Mac Book Pro. This is my first experience with a modern computer from Apple and in very first contact with Mac OS "Snow Leopard".
I am trying to configure that Mac to share the resources of my Windows XP small network at home. For that I have followed several instructions I found published on the Internet by other Mac users who were trying to do exactly the same as I am trying to do.
Unfortunately I face a quite basic problem all the time: when I follow any of the posts/ instructions, sooner or later, I cannot move forward because I cannot find where exactly the DIRECTORY ACCESS (or any functionally equivalent configuration program like that) in Mac OS Snow Leopard is located.

Couldn't find it anywhere! Did Apple take this off on purpose? Are they planning something new?
And also something to mention, Server Admin 10.5.6 and Apple Remote Desktop 3.2 DOES NOT WORK on Snow Leopard. The only way to manage my Server is to use Screen Sharing app <-- IT SUCK.

On tiger, I could connect to windows file shares quite easily, if I recall:
1. in Finder, use "Go" -> "Connect to Server"
2. Enter smb://servername/sharename
3. Click "Connect"
In Snow Leopard, I do this and I'm prompted for a login, but it WILL NOT take my windows domain / username and password.

I looked for a introduction forum but couldn't see one so hello guys and gals. Great forum you've got here..Right my issue is as follows.I have a new iMac Pro on snow leopard 10.6.4 and it is linked to a Windows SBS server 2007 but i don't think i've done it properly. When i switch the machine on all i get on boot up is 1 local user Sometimes i can leave it and it will offer me the 'Other' option which i can then login to the server But most times it doesn't to that... I have to logon as that local user and then unbind the windows domain and rebind it then when i logoff it shows me the 'Other' user Also another thing thats annoying is it doesn't map anything automatically i have had to create a alias icon on my desktop to go to my server space and it can take up to a minute to connect to the server..

I'm the only mac user on a network full of windows machines (Mostly windows 7 but one with XP) but I cannot see a single one on my iMac running 10.6.2. I found a guide on here about changing settings on your windows 7 box, which I followed but I still cannot see the machine on my network. Nor can any windows machines see my iMac on them.
I think it might be a port issue, are there any ports which I need to open on my router? I have an O2 Wireless Box III (A rebranded thompson router)

I have a Snow leopard server with a folder shared Via SMB for the 2 PC's we have, all the macs can read and write to this folder OK. About once a week the 2 pc's take 10 mins to start and then cannot connect to the share. Web/email and sharing betwen them still works. I can ping the server from both. I've turned off the smb and restarted it. Also tried restarting the Xserve. This still has no effect. All internal firewalls are off. I've tried guest access.

Our users logon to our 2008 Windows Domain and their windows home folder comes up as a folder called 'Work' on the mac taskbar. This is fine. When they open Microsoft Word e.g. and do a save you can't see this 'Work' folder in the Finder tree. Do I have to set up some kind of script - I just want a shortcut to this 'Work' home folder in Finder....how can you put one there automatically?  Is there any easy way so if they save to their mac 'Documents' folder it just get's re-routed to their 'Work' folder?

iMac OS X 10.6.8. previously migrated account -- need to rename the account at the destination. Step 6 in the support page does not occur. I never get a chance to hit OK to this: 6. Click OK when "A folder in the Users folder already has the name 'account name'. Would you like to use that folder as the Home folder for this user account?" appears. Note: This will correct the ownership of all files in the Home folder, and avoid permissions issues with the contents. A red flag appears in the field that conflicts (either the short name or the full name). The name(s) cannot be changed! must cancel out.Â

I have a couple of new users I've added to our directory recently. They are unable to connect to our internal jabber (iChat) server. Users that have connected previously are experiencing no difficulty. A quick overview of the layout of the system: two XServes, one is OD primary (aspen) the other is OD replica and iChat server (vail). I've modded some config files (long ago) to allow user IDs for jabber to be user@ourcompany.office instead of user@vail.ourcompany.office. It works quite nicely.Â
Excerpt from the logs shows a failed login attempt followed by a successful login attempt. Successful logins are happening from Messages (beta), iChat under Snow Leopard, and Pidgin under windows. Failing logins are all from iChat under Snow Leopard. Please ask questions, I'm happy to add any other pertinent data! May 3 16:21:45 vail jabberd/c2s[99718]: [13] [::ffff:10.255.170.122, port=52584] connectMay 3 16:21:47 vail jabberd/c2s[99718]: [13] [::ffff:10.255.170.122, port=52584] disconnect jid=unbound,

We use on our Server the OD. About 25 User can ue with their Account every Computer in the Office. Now wo saw the size of the harddrive has very less free space. When we click Apple-I on the users we see it is very low space uses, but this is because all the private folders are blocked. Is their a way to calculate the Open Directory size of every User Account?Â

I am running an open directory/active directory network. Authentication is from the Windows server 2003 active directory. It has worked fine until the last month. Now clients stop authenticating & when I check the AD plugin it says network accounts are not available. I can force the server to unbind, then renew the binding & everything works great. Is there any work around or fix for this other than upgrading the windows server to 2008?Â

I am tryiing to connect to a remote desktop servere which , I think, is Windows based. I know the IP address which, for example, is 123.45.67.891:2345
When I type this into the "connect remote server" (Finder>Go> Connect remote server) Apple adds a prefix  afp:// .  In the "missing manual" book by David Pogue he suggests the prefix ought be  smb:// for a windows server. Either way, a dialogue box informs me that attempt has failed whem I try to connect

I have set up an automator service that TAR's a folder into an archive for me and it works quite nicely. Idealy however, I would like to be able to highlight several folders, right click and have automator tar each folder into it's own TAR archive, but do it one by one. Â
[Code]...
I'm not 100% sure so I guess it would be a good time to verify, is there a problem with having the system try to TAR multiple folders at one time? If it is not a problem then I guess this discussion itself is pointless and I can simple right click on each folder and select "TAR Folder" and just wait until they're all finished. I would think that it would be ideal for the system to do each one individually and not try to do them all at one time.Â

I reformatted my macbook pro with Snow Leopard installed about half a week ago and it has stopped connecting to our wifi. The icon it shows for wifi is no bars with a '!'. It sees our Internet in the menu bar but fails to connect properly. I have tried resetting the PRAM, that does nothing. All other computers in the house can connect to it. I've tried turning the laptop, airport and our house's Internet off and on again. None of this has worked. Any ideas?

For the past week or so my system has developed a really annoying habit of basically killing the wifi connection just about every time the system goes to sleep, either automatically or manually. By 'killing' I mean connection speeds, up & down, are dragged down to miniscule rates. If you can even complete a speed test at all, say with Speakeasy, you might see something like .03 Mbps up, and a bit more than than down. Most of the time it just fails. Page loads are pretty glacial, of course, with many simply failing. Meanwhile, the iPad continues to truck right along on the same APExpress network, so that seems to be good. I was doing Restarts, which did work: All would be back to normal after that. I've subsequently learned that a Restart isn't required, all I have to do is log out of my account, then log right back in, and things are back to normal. I can't figure it out, and don't know what might have changed in the past week or so to cause this. i've never bothered to learn very much about the inner workings and hidden mechanisms of the wireless world (preferring Steve's "It Just Works .." approach to things) and that now leaves me with not much in my bag of tricks.

I received my macbook this afternoon and am currently trying to network my old dell with it so I can transfer my files. However, I cannot find the 'directory access' which is supposed to be in my utilities file- I have 'directory utility' but this has nowhere for me to enter the name of my windows workgroup (as per networking guide says I should) and thus cannot enter it into finder>go>connect to server!

I want to setup a public share to my public folder to window's xp users. When I do this, it seems to share the public folder AND the entire home directory for read/write. It doesn't seem to matter that I haven't shared that folder. This seems like a HUGE security hole to me. What am I doing wrong?

So, with build 10A432, I'm unable to access the files on my DNS-323 via Samba. It gives me this error ...
"The operation can't be completed because the original item for "Volume_1" can't be found."
I can access everything fine from another machine running Leopard. I believe this is a known issue with Snow Leopard, further hardening my belief that this is a very useless upgrade. The only real thing SL has got going for it, is the fact that it is cheap. That's why people will buy it, because its only $29.
Coming back to the topic, can someone suggest me a fix?
Also, if you want to debate the worthiness of SL as a $29 upgrade, please don't bother posting here. I don't want any smart fanboy comments either. Let's stick to the topic at hand.

I have another user on our network with an administrator account on my MBP, who normally logs on remotely. After upgrading to 10.6 there's no remote access to their account. When I tried to access the account from the machine, I get into the account but everything is unresponsive and the only way out is to turn the computer off using the on/off button.
Things are getting a bit desperate!
