View 2 RepliesI cannot transfer files to or from my Western Digital HD (WD1200D036). I have had this problem for a while and I cannot resolve it. What can I do? I cannot even reset my HD as I cannot move the important files from my HD to my Mac.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI just got my first Mac which has Snow Leopard. I've been trying to backup files to an HFS+ extended formatted hard drive. This usually fails because there are files that give me an error code of -41. It's random files. I also believe this is affecting why Time Machine can't backup my filesAnyway I can't find a solution to the -41 error code issue.

I'm transferring my files from a slowly failing mid-2010 MBP to my new retina MBP and have encountered an issue with one of my files. I have two concert recordings (2gb each) that will not transfer onto my hard drive and keep giving me the "Error -36 some data cannot be read or written".i am able to preview the sound files and can listen to them all the way through with no problem, but when i open them in ableton the computer locks up (which is common and cannot necessarily be blamed on the file). I have tried to convert them to a different format using MAX but i get the same error message. I've tried renaming and changing permissions as well as airdrop but it all has the same result of getting this error message. i was able to drag the file into my dropbox folder but (to no sucessful upload) and drag it out, but im not able to copy ans paste it.Â
I've had no other issues transferring the recordings of the same nature (transferred to my computer just like these two during the same tour).
I keep getting this error code and can't burn anything without getting it. Don't know what to do?

I have an external 2TB Western Digital Caviar drive hooked up to my 2006 iMac through a docking bay and USB 2.0. I'm running 10.6.6 and the drive is formatted as Mac OS Extended. It's my media and backup drive and I'm always copying stuff to and from it. All was well and good with the setup and I had no problems for probably 5 or 6 months. Just around Christmas, though, I started getting alerts when trying to copy files over to the drive. Error Code: -50.
Basically, I can still view/read files on the drive and play songs in iTunes, but if I try to rip a CD, iTunes hangs and dies. If I try to copy any file over using the Finder or empty the trash with files from that drive, I get the -50 code and alert. A restart will fix the problem for a little while but then it's back after maybe 30 minutes or so that's obviously not a good long-term solution. This page claims it is an "Error in user parameter list" but I have no idea what that means. I've done a bunch of Googling, but people are saying it's anything from problems with networked NTFS drives (which it's not for me) or that it's a disk permissions issue (no bootable system on the drive).
I'm trying to copy files from one server based backup to another but after completing part of the transfer I keep getting "error code -50" and only part of the files copy. How can I keep this from happening?

Every time I try to move a file really over a gigabyte to my external hard drive, I keep getting the error as stated in the picture. The weird thing is, I have 350+ gigs free on my external hard drive.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI did do a search on this problem, but i started a new thread b/c I think i may be having a slightly different issue...please hear me out..I have a Macbook, running Mac OS X Tiger (version 10.4.11). I have had a 500 GB external HD (MyBook) hooked up to it (via USB) for the past 4 months or so, never really had any issues, was always able to transfer files, no problem. However, today i suddenly ran into some serious problems. I tried to transfer some pictures to the external drive and after copying 200 or so files it gave me an error, said a specific file could not be transferred (specifically it said "the Finder could not complete the operation because some data in "IMG_3435.JPG" could not be read or written. Error Code - 36 "). At first I thought maybe that specific file was corrupted or something but i checked it out and it looked fine. So I then I tried transferring another folder of pictures, and then I got the same error right away (after transferring 3 files), for a different file. And now i'm at the point where I can't transfer ANY files to my external HD anymore! (T_T). And it's weird, when i transfer folders, it will transfer the folder itself but not the files.
View 6 Replies View RelatedThis error probably indicates a hardware problem or some system malfunction. I usually try to find out what exactly went wrong to take measures to avoid the repetition of the same problem. Exchanging the HD and restoring the sytem may be the quicker solution, but I would miss an opportunity to reconfigure my system to make it more robust.Â
The system in question is a MacMini (Model A1347) with Os-X-Server 10.6.7. and 2 physical HDs: HD1 has 2 Partitions, the smaller for the server OS, the larger for the Shares (We use the MacMini only as a file server). HD2 is not used (was kept in reserve for cases like this). Â
That there may be a problem manifested itself first when the mounting of the shares on HD1 became suddenly slow (within 2-3 days) and eventually failed. I first tried to copy all the files from the shares on HD1 to HD2 before attempting any repair actions. Most of the files copied properly but a few failed with error (-36). Those few can be restored from backups, so there is no data loss. Remains the question, what went wrong? Â
It may be pure coincidence but just before the File-Server failed there was an attempt to upgrade a 3rd party software on one of the clients (17'' MacBook Pro / OS X 10.6.8) to a newer version. Could be that new version was part of the problem because the data files of this 3rd party software are stored on one of the shares on HD1 and the data file format has been changed between the versions. For obvious reasons I need to make sure that this data file conversion was not the cause of the problem?
1) first check the HD1 with a different tool than DiskUtility (It thinks the HD1 is in perfect shape), TechTool Pro or DiskWarrier comes to my mind, any reason to prefer one over the other?Â
2) Hopefully those tools can reliably test whether the HD1 is damaged or not. If it is the former the HD1 replacement option is the way to go and there is no more reason the 3rd party software may have been involved. However if HD1 is not damaged I'm left with the uncertainty of what exactly lead to the problem..?Â
3) Is there any check I should do before I just re-format the HD and re-install the OS and switch back to an earlier version of the 3rd party software to be on the safe side? Â

Last night I installed VMWare Fusion and Windows 7 on my Unibody MBP running SL. When I use Fusion, my computer slows to a crawl. I spent a few hours getting Windows set up and installing software last night.
I would like to try using Boot Camp instead, but do not want to lose all of the software and files that I have installed. Is it possible to set up Boot Camp, and keep the same Windows setup?
I used to have XP installed on another intel mac with bootcamp. This computer was running 10.4 and I was able to open up the Windows partition from the icon on the desktop. From there I could drag in new items, take some out, whatever I wanted to do.
Now, however, on my new 10.5 computer, it seems every single folder is locked and protected in the windows partition I access from OS X.
I've been trying to move some files from my Mac HD to Windows partition, but I keep getting the message "The item ___ could not be moved because ___ cannot be modified." Anyone know how to fix this?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI moved the files from my external hard drive from the back up files made by Time Machine into the trash, as I've always done. This time I get an error message (error code 8003) and am not allowed to move the files back onto the drive or out of the trash, even after changing the permissions. I've searched the support forum for error code 8003, but find nothing that relates to back up files.
View 5 Replies View Relatedi'm about to buy my first mac but unfortunately i need to use windows from time to time. So I am currently trying to figure out whether to go with virtulization or bootcamp.
So here is my question: Can OS X see the windows partition and if so can you move files without any problems?
I am having trouble moving files between a windows computer and a mac. When I save a file on the USB from the [URL]. there is no problem, and when I extract it to my mac there is no problem. BUT when I delete the files from the USB stick, it looks like everything is okay (window of usb is clear, and therefore there should not be anything on it right?) But if I go to the settings for the USB to see if the entiry capacity of the USB is available again, then I find out that this is NOT so.
So basically my problem is that my USB tells me it is occupied, when in fact it is not, could it be something with the cooperation between pc and mac perhaps?
What do you think the reason for this is? and how could I fix it?
The problem is that I now have 3 different USB-sticks which are useless.
I am getting this error "The operation can’t be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code -50)." when I try to transfer files from my Mac Mini to my External Harddrive which is connected to my Airport Extreme. " The error does not appear to happen all the time. It does seem consistent if I am transfering files and then try to transfer more.  Â
The files I am transferring are .mp4. It does not appear to care about the size of the file, it happens with small files and large files, I can transfer some large folders (2.54G). I can connect the hard-drive externally directly to the mac mini and it will transfer any file.
I am receiving an error 5.5.4 "Invalid Email address error code 17099 indicating that mail could not be sent for Account name: "Msn". I have recently moved from a PC laptop and have been sent email messages to this account on my iMac successfully for several weeks. The email address in question is actively sending and receiving messages. I can receive email from that account.

View 5 Replies View RelatedA company is sending statements as .rtf files. I cannot view them in TextEdit or Pages. I have opened them on PC's so I know that the files exist are are viewable on a PC. The error I get is:
"The document 'xxx.rtf' could not be opened. The file isn't in the correct format."
In smaller text below it:
"The file might be corrupted, truncated, or in an unexpected format."
I get the same message for both TextEdit and Pages.
(To clarify, 'xxx' is not porn. I replaced the actual file name with 'xxx' for this post.... just incase you were wondering)
When partitioning so that I can install XP, bootcamp claims that specific files cannot be moved, making it so that I am unable to install XP. It then orders me to ~gasp~ back my files, and reinstall OSX. Anyone else have this error message? I wanted a 14GB partition, and that would leave about 16 additional gigs free on the OSX partition
