Every time I try to move a file really over a gigabyte to my external hard drive, I keep getting the error as stated in the picture. The weird thing is, I have 350+ gigs free on my external hard drive.

Have started loading movies in iMovie which is eating into disk space pretty quick so i want to move the uploaded and edited product to an external drive. Is it possible to have all my movie files on the external and the iMovie program set to read them from the external when required? If so how would i go about that?

I recently purchased a new 1TB LaCie d2 quadra drive to use with my macbook. Both of these drives are currently connected to my mac so i can move the files from one drive to another. I understand that the mac cannot write to the NTFS drive but it can read from it. I thought the best way to move the files over would be through the mac, i.e. using finder to move the files from one volume to the other. Is this the best, easiest way? or is there another way?

Because my itunes library is so large (250 gigs) I had been keeping most everything on an external WD drive. Now I'm trying to figure out how to move all these files from the external to my new internal drive without having to reset all my playlists and such (I have two iphones and an ipad pulling from certain playlists. It would be a huge undertaking to redo all this).
Does anyone know of an easy way to accomplish this? I thought about just copying and pasting all the music directly to the itunes folder. But then when I go to play the song in itunes it says the file cant be located (the external HD is disconnected) and asks if I want it to search for the song. For a few songs this would be fine. But with 46,000 its out of the question.
I recently bought both a new MacBook Pro running Snow Leopard (10.6.2) and a 500 gb Western Digital firewire drive to back up my files. I copied a large amount of files to the external drive, but when I try to move those files into a different folder on the same drive to organize them, it tries to copy the files instead of just moving them. I can't figure out how to just move them into a new folder for consolidation without creating a duplicate file. Am I missing something basic here?

I am running out of space on my laptop so I am moving all my music to an external hard drive. If I keep my file directory structure and naming the same, can I simply "re-point" iTunes to this new storage location and all my songs (etc...) will keep working in iTunes? Will storing the music on an external hard drive effect the performance (speed) of iTunes and/or iPod syncing?
View 8 Replies View RelatedI recently bought a 160GB external hard drive, and decided to transfer my iTunes music to it. I followed the instructions in the Help section of the iTunes program. The first time, I mistakenly created an empty "iTunes" folder and put an "iTunes music" folder inside, where i proceeded to copy the files. I had already set the defult location of the library to my F: drive, my external hard drive. However, the original location of the files stayed in iTunes. Again, following the advice of the iTunes program, I deleted the original folders, and I dragged the new iTunes music folder into the window - at which point i had TWO copies of each file - the first one with an exclamation beside it (original file missing) and the second being my new copies.

To free up space, I have moved my iMovie clips off to a secondary hard drive, but I have not seen my free disk space free up on my Macbook pro. Why is this? I moved, not copied the files. They only show now on the external hard drive. I am looking at the free space in Finder > Get Info. I have easily moved a few hundred GB off to the new drive, but my internal HD still shows as over 500Gb used.

My 500gb iMac (purchased April 2010) is about at capacity. 350gb of space is taken up by home movies (.mov) in iMovie. I bought an external hard drive and have moved about 200gb over to that drive.
After transfer, I deleted the original Events off iMovie and emptied the trash. I checked in both iMovie and in Finder and no longer see those files present on the Mac.
I thought this was going smooth and everything worked perfectly, but….when i went to check how much storage space i created on the Mac, the amount of available space barely budged (i moved 200gb of data to the new drive and i created about 30gb of space on the Mac).
Are these "deleted" files hidden somewhere and I need to go delete from somewhere else? How do I make sure I get back the storage that i need?
I bought my first mac (Aluminum Macbook 2.0GHz) a few days ago. So far so good. The learning curve wasn't as steep as imagined. There's an error I haven't been able to resolve. I transferred all my files to my external hard drive. A 500GB Western Digital HD.
When I try to delete files from the external HD I first get this message:
"The item "whateveri'mtryingto.delete" will be deleted immediately. Are you sure you want to continue?" I click continue and I get this: "Sorry, the operation could not be completed because an unexpected error occurred. (Error code -61)"
I've created an ISO file which I need to back up and keep safe. I have a couple on my macbook pro but due to the large file size, it's taking up alot of space on my hard drive. I tried to drag and drop this onto my external hard drive but when I attempted to move them, it came back with an error message saying it wasn't possible to do due to an error. I can drag and drop every other type of file but for some reason this wont want to work?
Note: The file itself ranges from 4.9GB - 8GB and I have about 200GB space on my portable hard drive.
I have an external 2TB Western Digital Caviar drive hooked up to my 2006 iMac through a docking bay and USB 2.0. I'm running 10.6.6 and the drive is formatted as Mac OS Extended. It's my media and backup drive and I'm always copying stuff to and from it. All was well and good with the setup and I had no problems for probably 5 or 6 months. Just around Christmas, though, I started getting alerts when trying to copy files over to the drive. Error Code: -50.
Basically, I can still view/read files on the drive and play songs in iTunes, but if I try to rip a CD, iTunes hangs and dies. If I try to copy any file over using the Finder or empty the trash with files from that drive, I get the -50 code and alert. A restart will fix the problem for a little while but then it's back after maybe 30 minutes or so that's obviously not a good long-term solution. This page claims it is an "Error in user parameter list" but I have no idea what that means. I've done a bunch of Googling, but people are saying it's anything from problems with networked NTFS drives (which it's not for me) or that it's a disk permissions issue (no bootable system on the drive).
I have a 24" iMac and it was running fine the other week and now I get this annoying error=36 whenever I try to transfer large files from desktop to my external drives. It goes about 1/4 way with the transfers then stops with the error=36 message. I've tried to reset the pram but it won't let me. It just keeps on restarting to the same gray screen with the single short beep tone over and over until I let go of the option, command, P & R buttons and restarts normally but does not reset the pram.

I have had a 500 GB external HD (MyBook) hooked up to it (via USB) for the past 4 months or so, never really had any issues, was always able to transfer files, no problem.However, today i suddenly ran into some serious problems. I tried to transfer some pictures to the external drive and after copying 200 or so files it gave me an error, said a specific file could not be transferred (specifically it said "the Finder could not complete the operation because some data in "IMG_3435.JPG" could not be read or written. Error Code - 36 "). At first I thought maybe that specific file was corrupted or something but i checked it out and it looked fine. So I then I tried transferring another folder of pictures, and then I got the same error right away (after transferring 3 files), for a different file. And now i'm at the point where I can't transfer ANY files to my external HD anymore! (T_T). And it's weird, when i transfer folders, it will transfer the folder itself but not the files.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI have my iTunes library on a external HD. I purchased a new one with a bigger capacity and I tried to highlight and copy everything to the new drive and it wont let me. A window pops up saying that it cant be copied to the new drive because there are backup items items included or something like that. The drive that I am trying to drag everything to is partitioned so that Time Machine gets 600GB. Could that be what its talking about?

View 4 Replies View RelatedMy Macbook Pro from 2007 won't boot anymore, turns out to have NVIDIA GPU problem. It ran on Snow Leopard, but I can't enter it anymore to upgrade. I'm trying to move mail to my new Imac and have a TM backup on the desktop of it. I followed this [URL]..... Mail folder and plist are now copied in the same locations, new original Mail folder is parked on desktop because I didn't dare 'fuse' the two, let alone replace it with my old mail folder.
When opening the Mail app. I get the permissions message that I should set 'read and write' permissions on the Mail folder, but it says the info Mail wants to use is in the mail folder in the Backup folder, although I provided it with a copy in its own Library. The permissions via show info were ok, but I redid them and still the error keeps popping up.
Questions:
Why won't it use the folder from its own library?
Could this be because my previous version is too old?
I can't enter my mail or mail addresses, years of data there..

He wants to move the files off that computer and onto one of his newer macs so that the older powermac can finally be laid to rest.
The power Mac has a floppy drive which I am hopping I can use in tandem with a USB floppy drive for one of his newer macs so that no data is lost.

I was thinking of moving the drive to plug it into the AEBS, and have iTunes access my music from there. I understand this will upset iTunes, since it wont recognize the HDD (since it used to be connected via USB). Is there a simple way to tell iTunes that the path of most of the music has moved to the network drive?
