How do I factory reset my iMac?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI used the command System Preferences -> Startup Disk to select the partition that has the OS as the only partition to boot. Now, when I start up the machine with the option key pressed, it doesn't show the Recovery volume and it won't let me start with an external flash drive.

I have recently found out that my master password is not what I thought it was! I am currently running OS X 10.7 Lion and would like to reset my master password. There are two user accounts on the Mac - one being mine (administrator) and the other my sons (managed). I know both account passwords but not the master password. How can I reset it?

I had to reset my admin password. I am running 10.7 but had to use the snow lepard disc. i was able to re-set it. Now when i restart the comp, it shows my accounts with its picture, but when i click on an account nothing happens. The screen is showing my accounts, and the options to restart, turn off or put the computer to sleep. What am i doing wrong. I cant sign on to any of my accounts.

A few years ago I set a master password. I know the master password but would like to change it. I've read a few articles and it says to do this via System Preferences/Security/File Vault; however, when I get to File Vault, the master password info/screen/area is not there.

I initially tried the normal System Preferences/ Users and Groups approach, unlocked the window, entered my existing password, entered my new password twice...got this...obviously I have edited the image to remove my name...
Recovery mode using Lion results in a very similar message, a box pops up, etc. No go .So I try to reset the Admin password to have a new Admin login which results in the "starting a new machine" screens, etc., so I can then change MY password, etc using this... Boot single user and enter rm /var/db/.AppleSetupDone But the system reports it cannot find the file or directory. So I login as Administrator (I have this password) and using the GUI, the option to change MY password is not showing. So I login as root (I also have this password) and using the GUI, again, there is no option to change MY password. As I upgraded/App Store via the network I do not have a disk to boot from.I do have Time Machine backups, so the notion of restoring Apps and personal files and folders after a complete reinstall is not that hideous, though I have better things to do like most of you. But really, isn't there a way for me to change my password using the GUI?

Every time I try to log into my webmail from my computers or iPhone, I get an incorrect user name or password error message and haven't been able to receive my mail in my inbox. The server (Cox Communications) is telling me I need malware or spyware or whatever the heck one uses for this type of thing. I've never had to worry about that before but have recently posted items on Ebay, Craigslist and also a resume online which is about the time I seemed to start having problems with my server connection.Â

Initially, the trash container worked as expected: Items would go directly to the trash and stay there until I emptied it.Â
I don't believe I did anything to cause what it does now but I don't like it: If I move something to to trash, I am prompted to enter my password (which I really don't like) and no items are held in the trash (what I used to call the recycling bin--which I kind of liked having).Â
As for troubleshooting, I have changed the preference settings under "Finder" and nothing changes.

I have a recent Macbook Air that has file vault 2 installed. I reset my password this morning, but cannot remember it at all this afternoon. I have all my files backedup so I am not worried about data loss. So I went to do a reinstall from the recovery partition and its asking me for my password... which is the password I do not know. I also do not remember putting the recovery key down anywhere (stupid I know).Â
How can I just reinstall Mavericks on the system now?
When I first setup my OSX laptop, my filevault and user login password were the same. At bootup, I only had to login once (with my username and password).I recently changed my OSX password but my filevault / disk encryption password was not changed. Now I have to login twice when I boot up (first with my old pass, then with the new one).Is there any way to change the disk encryption password so I can be in sync with my login password?I tried Disk Util > File > Change Password, but it is greyed out.
