OS X Mountain Lion :: Updated Software To 10.8.5 And Now Many Programs Won't Work?
Jun 25, 2014
Yesterday I updated the software to OS X 10.8.5 and since then I haven't been able to use multiple programs such as Safari, Google Chrome, Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint. What I should do to make the programs work again.Â

OS X 10.8.5Â
All of the microsoft programs (Skype, word, excel, update utility, even error reporting, all) I regularly run on my macbook pro have stopped working. If I try to open an application or document the icon bounces on the dock, the graphic flashes on the screen (just like normal), then the crash report comes up. The crash report stays for a moment then the crash report for the crash report (Microsoft Error Reporting has quit unexpectedly) pops up.Â
I feel like this started after the latest software update from a few days ago but I can't be entirely certain of that. I don't know how to revert previous to the update to check if that is the problem.
I have restarted the computer. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the programs. I have updated the programs, as well as OS X.Â

After the disaster getting Quicken for Mac 2007 (or earlier) to sort-of work on Lion, has anyone checked if the Lion Compatible Quicken for Mac works on the new Mountain Lion operating system? Even though this isn't an Apple problem, I know I'm not the only person who would love to update to a new Mac; however, they all come with Mountain Lion, and many of us are terrified of losing financial data if there's another

In OSX 10.7.4 all sections of iWork fail to initiate and quit with an error message. Each time a message page is sent to Apple saying that the program has quit followed by pages of data. Searching discussion groups has failed to provide a conclusive answer.

I spent some time avoiding Lion after being part of seeding, even to the extent of buying a new MacPro last year, that would not require Lion. I wish to stay with Snow Leopard until a new OS apeals to me, might be Mountain Lion, might be Puma or Lynx. I now see that I have been caught out - MobileMe, iCal, iSync, iDisk etc will end and move (with limited comparability to MobileMac) to iCloud, and so far, it seems that this requires Lion exclusively!Â
Is this really so? Has Apple really become so violently unfriendly to its friends and associates - its Users, that it will actively and knowingly ignore their pleas, for a return to intelligent Operating Systems and Applications - I was told recently that Apple was only interested in those who are not yet Mac users. This would be very sad.Â
It does fit though with Apple's behaviour regarding FCP - I'd used used FCP since version 1, now I must stay with the ever aging version 7 or go to Adobe or Avid - neither of whom I enjoy working with. I might just have to invest huge money into a Heavyworks or Quantel system - I loathed FCPX! But really this is ultimately about Apple's direction. Why has it now become so narrow, when once it was possible to be many versions behind the current and still function?

This morning I thought I was deleting the keychain password to one account, when I accidentally deleted all of my keychain storage items. I followed the directions from the Support Community to restore the Keychain Folder using my Time Machine backup. I even restored the .plist files. Â
However, now when I open a site in Safari, only the user name is pre-populated, but not the password. When Safari asks me if I want to save the password in my Keychain, an error message pops up telling me "A keychain cannot be found to store password."  I'm given the option to Cancel or Reset to Defaults. I'm not sure what to do. I'm even afraid to restart my Mac fearing I won't be able to log in or connect to my wifi network.Â
I also cannot get any of my emails through the Mail application. It keeps prompting me to enter my password, but then won't allow me to hit the Okay button b/c it's grayed-out.Â

I updated my Adobe per a box coming up as usual on my screen saying a new update was available. I was afraid this issue might have been becuase I might have closed my computer prior to it finishing. However, I've uninstalled and reinstalled the entire Adobe. However when trying to open websites that link to a pdf file, it will not open. It shows a blank screen. Adobe PDF files that are saved to my computer open fine in Adobe, but not through websites. Is this a part of that virus that supposedly happened two weeks ago- or is this just a coincidence.

I would like to switch completely to Mac but I have a lot of old Fortran 77 programs that I still use & they work fine on Windows. Couple of problems though. They were written (by me & others) pre-USB and hence, write to parallel port which are harder to find on printers or computers. Do newer Fortran compilers write to USB ports? There will also be issues with ASCII character & screen writing. I have sources including library sources. Since I have not programmed for about 20 years, I would like to find someone who could do the conversions for me under contract? Have tried Windows people without success. Think I need someone familiar with Apple and Fortran.

I am a potential Mac user and was wondering how deletion of programs and applications work? I understand that most of the files are contained within the installation folder because there is basically no registry for the most part. However, some applications will be tied to the OS right? What is the best way to delete applications completely?

I use a User account, but have an admin account for if things get messed up in an emergency. I notice every program that's installed just about on the user account is available in the admin account. What if a program is causing the issue? Wouldn't the admin account have the possibility of being hosed as well? Is there a way to stop this easily?

My ibook screen has been spontaneously and arbitrarily going black. I reinstalled the operating system and now Safari crashes every time I try to open it. Several other programs will not open including adobe and iTunes now says "You cannot use the application iTunes with this version of Mac OS" I also noticed that about this mac now says I'm running 10.4.2. when I had 10.4.11. I was prompted to install some updates a few hours after the reinstall. The screen is still randomly going black after the reinstall.

I am interested in developing a database at work (a medical research laboratory), and was wondering if anyone could suggest a decent database program. We currently have the following computers in the lab:
- Power Mac G4 running Jaguar (could upgrade to Tiger if need be)
- Power Mac G5 running Tiger
- Power Mac G5 running Leopard
- Mac Pro Quad Core Intel Xeon running Leopard
It would be extremely useful if the database program could sync databases, such that changes that one user makes on the database is transmitted to the other Macs (if so, we would require a server? Could we just convert one of the macs over to being a server? which one would be best?).
Specifically, if the database could be extremely user friendly, that would be great. Its just for keeping track of what reagents we have, what protocols we have, what cell lines we have, etc. etc.

I have had Lion since the day it came out, and this is the first time I've encountered this problem. All of the applications that I have downloaded and installed before yesterday worked perfectly. Then, out of the blue, any application that I install or update (not from the App store) refuses to launch. It either bounces forever in the dock or does nothing when it is clicked.Â
The only system changes I have made are installing Photoshop CS6 Beta and Steam. So far, I've tried:
- Permissions & Disk repair through the Lion recovery partition
- Removing and re-downloading the apps
- Running in 32-Bit modeÂ
I'm running 10.7.3, with all the latest updates installed, on a mid-2011 Macbook Pro. Restoring from a TM backup is not really a viable option currently, since my backup drive is 50 miles away and unavailable for the next week and a half

As time passed, we have many, many computers around our institution. At some point, users were able to update their individual software without admin assistants. However, we have changed the policy, and users can't do this anymore. Therefore, is there an easy way to push updates to multiple apple computers? The apps that need to be updated include:
1. Apple OS
2. Individual Applications
3. Apple Firmware
If you could list what product works best, and if Apple does have a in-house solution.

I would be interested to know if updating, for example, Lion 10.7.2 to 10.7.3, or 10.7.3 to 10.7.4, also updates the System on the Lion Recovery Disk.Â
I thought I could find out by booting on the Recovery Disk, but there's no "About this Mac" item in this System's Apple menu.Â
