When you drag a folder in Windows to another folder that contains a folder with the same name, it asks if you want to replace any filenames or folders that have the same name. So, in the end, it merges the two folders together.
Mac OS X, on the other hand, completely replaces them. My question is: How can I merge a folder like in Windows?
I finally ripped my music into digital format. It is a very large library so I performed the rips in four segments creating four folders of music. The highest level folders are Music1, Music2, Music3, Music4. The next layer folder is the artists name, then album name, then the actual MP3S. How do I merge the folders? If I perform a copy the first artist name is sees that already is exists, the finder wants me to skip the copy or replace the folder that is there. I simply want to add the folder or merge it. Is there a "merge" function in OSX? I tried Carbon Copy but it will not copy or sync fils on the same disk.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to copy folders from my Macbook Air's hard drive to my Google Drive app. The folders are newer versions of what's on Google Drive - ie it contains much the same stuff but some extra files and maybe some updated files.
However, the only options it gives me when copying are "Replace," "Don't Replace" or "Stop" (and from what I can tell, those latter two do exactly the same thing - or should I say, don't do the same thing... I mean they both just cancel the copy).
I was sure there used to be an option "Merge" which skips anything identical and replaces only new or edited files. This is the exact thing I want to do! But is that option gone? Or is there a way I can get it back? (I can't find any way to bring it back in the system preferences).
I could just hit "Replace" (and I will in the meantime), but there are two problems with that: 1) that will get annoying when files and folders are large; 2) more pressingly, that will muck up the sharing permissions. There's a particular sub-folder that I currently have shared on Google Drive with specific people, and I don't want to override that folder with one that's identical in everything except the all-important sharing settings.

I have one official iTunes library with music files on my Mac and then I have a folder on my backup drive with iTunes music files. These two directories are mostly the same but they each have a few differences. I want to backup my iTunes music onto that backup drive but I need to make sure that I get all the music from my Mac and the backup drive. The folders are slightly different and I don't want to lose any music.Should I just run an rsync command to merge the two folders together into a third folder and then use that as my backup?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm constantly taking pictures and have finally bought a 1 TB hard drive to store my photos in. The only problem is that, a few months ago, I was in a crunch for space on my Mac and needed to move my pictures to a different (older) external hard drive for the time being until I was able to buy a new one. In the process of copying all of my pictures from my laptop to my old external hard drive, I went to Macintosh HD>Users>Username>Pictures>iPhoto Library and clicked on "Show Package Contents" to open up the actual picture files in my iPhoto. (I know now - not the best method) So I copied all of my files to my old external hard drive from the "Originals" and "Modified" folders on my Mac.
Is there a way I can move all of my pictures back to my iPhoto library so that it only shows the pictures in regular iPhoto method? (as in, iPhoto displays the original photo, but if modified, iPhoto displays the modified photo and keeps the original in the background folders). I tried to copy and paste the Original and Modified folders contents from my old external hard drive into my respective Original and Modified folders on my Mac and then open iPhoto to see if it would automatically register it, but no luck. Right now, if I were to simply import all of the pictures, I would get 4 copies of each photo, since I shoot in RAW+JPEG, and I have close to 70 GB of photos, so going through all of those individually would not be fun. My ultimate goal is to combine the files in my current iPhoto with my existing photos on my old hard drive and be able to use my new hard drive as my main library in iPhoto in order to free up a lot of space on my Mac.

For anyone that hasn't used cut and paste for files before, here's a short description:Cut - when you cut files the only thing that happens is that moveAddict remembers the location of the files, it does not change the files in any way Paste - when you paste, moveAddict moves the files from their original locations to the new one If you cut a file and forget to paste it, nothing happens!

I'm looking for software that can silently sync local folders with remote webdav folders.
It would also be nice if I could just relate to the local folder, and the software would automatically synce new files in both directions.
I bought a Seagate Free Agent Go Flex External drive. I transferred all my files from my previous external HD. When I went to access my folders on my external HD, the folders are all locked, with Sharing and Permission section in the Information "Everyone: Read" only! I can't change any of the information or move things! All of them are locked and "read only." I know how to change it, but only manually, individually. I have several hundreds of folders and I don't want to manually change all of them to "Read & Write." Is their a way to let me re-set the folders to "Read & Write" easily??

I have a question for the the Safari geeks out here (1.1.1 version 100.1, running on MacOSX 10.3.2): I have imported my bookmarks from a Mozilla install on a Linux box, based on a hint I found here with the debug options (worked great!!!), and I have the following questions related to adding a new bookmark (based on the fact that my bookmarks are organized in multi-level folders, e.g. OperatingSystems->Linux->Security->Firewall, etc.):
- when opening Bookmarks->Add bookmark ..., how could I possibly collapse all the levels, so that I can easily scroll, and open/drill down into the appropriate level of bookmarks, without having to scroll thrrough all (by default) expanded levels? ... especially critical as some sub-categories may match names, with different higher level bookmarks, thus having to make sure I am where I want to be (e.g. I have a Security folder under OS->Mac, as I have one under OS->Linux, and I have to remember which one I am under, if the "parent" is out of the scrolling window);
- is there any easy way to add a new "level/folder", through Bookmarks->Add bookmark, at the time of salvaging a new one, vs. having to open the Bookmarks in a new window, adding the folder, then returning to add the new bookmark?

I have all my media on an external Firewire 800 drive. On that drive i have multiple folders and sub folders. The problem is when I click on any of those folders it open the contains in a new window, rather than letting me just click through. it's frustrating as I can end up with half a dozen windows open to get to one file. This only happens on external drives. Is there a way to fix this?

Deleting a single message or folder works fine. However, when I try to delete a folder with subfolders, even though I reply to the 'are you sure' message by clicking "yes," the folder and subfolders initially disappear yet, immediately upon refresh, all folders and subfolders reappear and I find that the instruction has been completely ignored.

I recently purchased a used 15" PowerBook Ti 1.0GHz with a fresh install of OSX 10.5.8.
Even though I am logged in as Administrator it will not allow me to rename folders or to delete some files. When trying to rename a folder, for example, it displays, " You do not have sufficient access privileges to rename the item."
I have run the Disk Utility to repair permissions but with no improvement.
When I Get Info on the folder, it says I have Read and Write permissions but I cannot change the name in the Get Info box, either.
Can anyone tell me how to keep more than one OS X System folder on the same hard drive? I have Mac OS X 10.4 and I need to install 10.1, but I can't from the 10.1 Installer.
View 13 Replies View Relatedme and my lass are having difficulties moving folders from her old G4 to a new IMAC. photos saved in i photo we can simply put onto the camera sd card and then transfer but as I broke the cd burner on the G4 which I am constantly being reminded of at the moment How do you move folders from one mac to another as they contain pohotos our lass has had for a few years now.
I have no knowledge of computers as it took me two days to find the button to open the CD draw on my own new computer so any answers would need to be simplistic. I think you can just put them on a memory stick or load them onto the SD card of the camera. But how?
And considering I broke the burner on the other MAC our lass isnt that keen on me touching these folders as she doesnt want to lose the phtos.
Today I was trying out Freeway and Nvu, and somehow one of the System folders and another folder (and all of the folders within those two major folders) cannot be modified. When I try to drag another file/folder into the restricted folders, a message tells me, "The item .... could not be moved because "Folder" cannot be modified."
How do I undo this restriction? There are two choices in the message window, one says "Authenticate," and the other says "OK." If I click on "Authenticate," then I can type in my password and complete the action.
I cannot find any settings to undo this problem!

Is there a simple way (i.e. 100% free, including using the Terminal) to determine which files in one folder are NOT in another, disregarding any extensions the files in each folder have?
One way I thought I could approach this, using the Terminal:

diff folder1.txt folder2.txt
Only problem is that this does NOT ignore extensions, so all the lines in both text files will be reported as different. This is NOT what I want.
I'm pretty anal about the cleanliness of my documents folder, so I cannot stand having a folder called Adobe or Microsoft User Data in my docs folder.
I want to be able to hide those folders without adding a . before them (because then the apps won't be able to find the folders). Is there any way to do this? I know you can also change the permissions, but again, then the apps cant use the folders.
I've only realized there is no option to rename a folder on a mac right click menu. You either have to double click it slowly, press enter or right click then "Get Info". It is probably actually easier on PC to rename folders

So now i have two folders or more and they keep stacking up on top of another as opposed to where you click on a folder and it goes directly to it.

i would have 3 folders open where i just want only one.

It would be awesome if I could save a document to my documents stack, and then have a script or anything automated that would sync the folder (once a week maybe?) to my windows pc/file server in the basement.
