OS X Mavericks :: Runs Out Of Application Memory During Sleep
Aug 27, 2014
Shortly after updating:
Safari (to 7.0.6)
Java (to version 7 update 67)
Pages (5.2.2, which has "An error has occurred" note in the purchases section of my App Store application)
Keynote (6.2.2)
Numbers (also has "An error has occurred" note in the "Purchases section" of my App Store application, and while it shows "installed" in same section, Numbers does not appear on the recently updated list in the "Updates" section)
and iMovie (10.0.5)
I also recall an Adobe update occurring (Macromedia?).Â
I began experiencing slow wake-from-sleep behavior. More recently, I have been getting "out of application memory" dialogs upon waking from sleep. There have also been a couple instances where the computer would not wake and had to be restarted. At one point, without having gotten the "out of application memory" dialog, I did note that virtual memory had ballooned to over 14 GB. That stayed like that until I logged out and logged back in.Â
This behavior seems to be specific to a user account (did not repeat when logged in as admin for one overnight test, but haven't tried an all day admin login).
I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling BOINC, as well as removing an Adobe Resource Synchronizer app from the user login items (given the recent Adobe update, and having read that said item could cause trouble).Â
So, I'm not sure how to proceed beyond offering the reports below:

I had a window pop up that read, "Your system has run out of application memory" when I had sever al word documents open and Safari open & Gmail open.Â
I also do not know what deamons are, nor have I been able to use "time machine" to back up anything on my computer.Â
Here is what the Etresoft report told me:Â

I have a iMac intel running Maverick and designing a 100 page website in Dreamweaver. Due to the size it is very slow how can I allocate more memory to the Dreamweaver software?
I just bought a early 2009 MAC Pro and it came with 3GB of RAM, I ordered 3 2GB sticks of memory to replace the 3 1GB sticks that I had in there from Kingston. I turned off the unit, I popped the little levers and pulled the memory out of slot 1, 2, 3 and then replaced the memory with the new Kingston in slot 1, 2, 3
One of the sticks in is not working at all and I get the RED LED light no matter what slot I move that chip to. So I am running on 2 of the new Kingston memory chips.
Can I mix the memory and add the 1GB into slot 3 and 4 with slot 1 and 2 full of 2GB chips?
Also how to I run the memory utility again? I went to /system/Library/CoreServices/ and then I see the program Memory Slot Utility.app
How do I run this? I'm used to no spaces and I type ./then program name
So my Macbook Pro has been working wonderfully, until recently when it runs out of battery it goes into sleep mode but when I plug in the power cord it does not do the restoring from how it was before (i don't know what its called, but its when the screen goes grey and the white bars go across until i can get back in) it does not show me anything so I have to press the power button and even then it does not show me that screen it just reboots (i don't hold it in but just press it normally like when booting it up) Then when it is booted the date and time are reset and the Wi-fi does not work. I have to reset the clock and it then works fine.
I've usually in all my year with Mac not had my drives sleep. I note now that when my drives awake one of the fans is spinning faster than normal. Just a little nothing crazy and then it slows to normal. Â
Is this the sound of a problem fan or something on my motherboard or something? Â
Should I do a PRAM reset? or whatever it's called these days? Running OSX 1.6.8Â

I have a G5 (Power PC, g5, Dual 1.8 GHZ with 1.25 GB SDRAM, and Mac OS X 10.4.10-phew!) and I recently: added more USB ports using a PCI card, and purchased a non-Apple 22" widescreen display.
Prior to adding USB ports, I was using a hub that ran off its own power source, and used a Samsung 19" monitor.
My situation now: everything starts up fine, but ultimately the fan will kick in at SUPER HIGH and won't stop. I can put my Mac to sleep--which stops the fan noise--but then it won't wake up.
I have run the Apple Hardware test and everything checks out OK. I've also reset the SMU according to directions from this forum; AND I've vacuumed out all the dust bunnies.
The fan runs so loud and so high it sounds like it's an airplane that's about to take off.
Short of bringing in my Mac to a technician, can you recommend anything? My Mac has been glitch free up until now.
Whenever my battery gets drained, my MacBook Pro turns off as if the battery was pulled out, I lose all my work when this happens. This started after I installed Snow Leopard, before, it would just go to sleep and my work is safe.
Anyway, sometimes I'll leave my MacBook Air on without the power adaptor attached, and the battery will drain. That's all fine and dandy. The problem is, is that instead of going to sleep LIKE IT SHOULD, it will completely turn off, and everything I had up (web pages, anything and everything) will be GONE when it starts back up.

MBP Penryn Late 2008 2GB RAM 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo. I'm getting the following popup from time to time: Your Mac OS X startup disk has no more space available for application memory. Then, it pauses the app that uses the most memory (Safari) and shows a window where I can pause and resume applications, or force quit. Strange thing is, I still have 4GB left on my HD, and my memory bar is only 2/3 filled.
It's on the top of my list right now. I tried closing it and restarting it and it still have a high memory count. It's higher then my firefox which has 30 tabs opened. Anyone know of it's designed this way? or I have too many RSS feeds? I only have 5 RSS with 1 Gmail IMAP account on it.
I have had terrible problems with my Mac Mini. Apple has replaced the hard drive twice, the SATA cable once and the optical drive once in the first year I've had it. After the latest installation of Lion, I have had repeated problems with the error "Your Mac OS x startup disk has no more space available for application memory." This is false -- I have less than half of my 500 GB in use and 4 GB of wired memory.Â
I believe that Safari is always running when I get this error. Also, I cannot cleanly quit Safari -- I always must force quit, b/c it hangs when I quit. The last time I got this message, Safari was using 1.26 GB of memory. Â
This is after only 1 or 2 days of uptime. I have just a couple of weeks left on my Apple Care and am desperate to know if this is hardware problem requiring my 5th trip to the Genius Bar or if this some kind of software problem that I can fix.Â
On this latest Lion install, I did a clean install with no settings or applications, and I killed extensions on Safari.Â

I have a brtand new Mac Book Air and have got the message "Your system has run out of application memory". I have hardly any applications apart from those pre-loaded, what is happening?
Everytime i click on a new window i seem to lose about a mb of memory, i don't know whether its a virus, or an application gathering disc space or something else, but it's really annoying and i keep on having to delete stuff to free up new space,
When I click on the red cross button of Safari to stop it, the window vanishes. But the application remains in memory, so when I click again Safari shows up immediately. This is the normal behavior, iPhoto doesn't. I mean the lightening dot under the icon in the dock disappears. So is there a way to have iPhoto behave like Safari? I upgraded memory of my MBP and there is space enough to keep iPhoto and others in memory.

My MacBook air keeps slowing down and giving me the error message "Your system has run out of application memory". I end up having to force quit all applications and reboot, which fixes the problem for 10 - 15 minutes and then it starts over again.Â
I am on the road for work and won't be able to get to an Apple store until next week, but this is creating a gigantic headache for me. I found a bunch of threads on this same topic for Snow Leapord, but nothing pertaining to Yosemite.Â
I brought a 13" Macbook air late 2013 model in December last year. It has 4GB Ram and a 120GB Storage.I have a 160GB portable hard-drive which I store all my files on (Music, pictures etc) so this leads me to this question. Why do I keep getting the error message "Run out of application memory".That message pops up when I use Chrome (Only program running!!!!!!!!!! other than Finder) even if I have one page open??Â
It's also popped up before when no programs are running and causes the MacBook to freeze up resulting in me having to turn it off via the power button. I have run Disk utility and there appears to be no issues? I Googled the error message and all it brought was up people having problems with the calendar application which I do not use nor is it running?Â
Two days ago my iMAC began giving me the message "Your Mac OS X startup disk has no more space available for application memory." I have Lion 10.7.4 installed with 1TB HD (half full) and 8GB memory. 3.06 GHz intel Core 2 Duo The HD sounds like it is running all the time. How can I remedy this problem?
I keep getting the following message: Your Mac OS X startup disk has no more space available for application memory. How do I fix this? I heard it might have something to do with my yahoo mail.
that doesn't cause sleep issues? I just bought a Startech 12-in-1 because it said it was mac compatible and couldn't find any reports of interfering with sleep, and yet on my 2009 MBP it does the apparently usual trick of starting to sleep then blipping the super drive and waking up again asking for a password. Are there cards out there that work flawlessly, or is it just a problem with the expresscard slot as a whole?
I have never worked with applescript before, so I am completely lost. I have a program that does not like to be open when the computer goes to sleep. I usually remember to close the app, but sometimes I forget and get myself in trouble. If I do forget, very bad things can happen to the database of the program, so it is imperative that it is closed.
I am hoping there is an applescript that will quit the application if I put my laptop to sleep, usually by closing the lid. I don't want to trigger the sleep with the applescript, just something that will see that the computer is going to sleep and quit the application before it happens. Is this possible, and if so, how do I go about doing it?

I will soon be getting a new macbook pro ret (soon) and will leave my macbook (13-inch, Aluminum, Late 2008) in the office where I am situated in university. I am looking to ensure that I can leave one at office and one at home. Yet keep access to both, I have seen "logmein pro" and seems to look good except one problem. It says to wake from sleep you need a computer on network running logmein. This I cannot guarantee as it is a university network. It also says that it will need to be linked to the network through cable to wake from sleep.
I will also need to close the lid of the laptop (or leave it open and risk trashing it) and have a password/login lock incase someone decides they want to be naughty. Anyway, I need a program that i can use over wifi (not highest priority) that WILL wake my macs from sleep (highest priority) and WILL (essential) allow me to have full remote access to computers including drag and drop. I dont care about accessing from my mobile as have drop box.
Since upgrading to 10.6.1 I've found that every time i wake my MB from sleep, applications keep quitting left and right, and I get these "application quit unexpectedly" messages. It's happened with Entourage, Safari, iTunes, Dashboard. It's getting pretty annoying. I've tried resetting the PRAM but that didn't help. Does anybody have a clue what to do?!
I have a early 2009 17" uMBP upgraded to Snow Leopard. Prior to closing the lid to activate sleep mode, is it advisable to leave an application and/or web page in place?
I just recently, in the past week, have been doing this . . . And I was wondering if there might be any adverse effects with this practice.
