OS X Mavericks :: Copy Time Machine Backups From Desktop To Reformatted External Drive

Dec 10, 2014

My time machine backups to an external drive stopped with a message that the backup could not be done because the drive could not be repaired and needed to be reformatted.  Prior to reformatting I copied the TM backup file of 250GB to my desktop.  My internal drive is 500GB and this only leaves me with 33GB of available space. I then reformatted the drive with the proper OS extended journaled and GUID partition. The external drive is 500GB.  When I try to copy the backup file from the desktop to the reformatted drive the process begins normally with the message  "preparing to copy files" but as the preparation process reaches 13,000,000 files it stops with the message "there is not enough sufficient space to copy files" even though it never even got to the actual file transfer.  I have tried copying the backups in small batches to the new drive but I get an error message that backup files cannot be modified.

OS X Mavericks :: Proven External Disk For Time Machine Backups?

Aug 26, 2014

I'm looking for a good, reasonably priced, external disk to temporarily use for Time Machine backups.  My 10.9.4 install is messed up and Time Machine no longer works with my ReadyNAS NV+ system.  I want to use the disk to backup my MBP and reinstall the OS. suggest a proven external disk (2TB+) with a USB 2.0 (or Ethernet) interface?

Now Time Machine says the drive is full and cannot complete the back up- how can I delete some old back ups to make room for the latest one?  And once I have room- restrict it to back up only once a week?  I really want to use the drive for the music and photos- but fear not having a complete backup before i update to Mt. OS X :: Time Machine On External Drive - Can't Use Drive For Other Backups

May 25, 2009

I have a MacPro, OS X 10.5.7. I have TM configured to back up to an external 1 TB firewire drive. I use Adobe Lightroom for photography. it provides a checkbox to allow you to backup all photos as you import them from your camera card. Adobe recommends selecting an external drive for these backups. But for some reason, it does not allow me to select the external drive that TM uses.

Hardware :: Copy A Time Machine Ext Drive Contents To Another External Drive

Jan 14, 2009

I've got an external drive that was a Time Machine backup drive. It's at the police station as evidence for something and they will not let me take it back. However, they will let me come down and make a copy of it. I might only have one shot at this so I'm trying to think of the best way to do it successfully and quickly.

Can I just bring another external with me, my Macbook, and then copy the files from the Time Machine backup external drive to the other external drive? If so, what is the facility for doing this quickly? I'm kind of new at Macs and am unsure. I do not have an extra Mac that I can simply use Time Machine to restore to to replace it's contents.

MacBook Pro :: After Restoring Files To Reformatted HDD / Use New Thunderbolt Drive For Time Machine

Jun 24, 2014

I have the latest MacBook Pro Retina 15 with 16gb of RAM but am having problems with one of my external HDDs (1TB LaCie Rugged USB 3.0/2.0).  I was using 500GB for Time Machine and that seemed to be working well but when trying to write to the other 500GB I have been getting write errors with some files of late.

I have now bought another LaCieRugged Thunderbolt 1TB HDD and want to copy files from the 500GB partition (non-TM) to that before doing a complete reformat of the now 2 partition drive(1TB LaCie Rugged USB 3.0/2.0).  Then after restoring the files to the reformatted HDD I want to use the new Thunderbolt drive for Time Machine. Any free/non-free 100% reliable backup software.

IMac :desktop Hd And Time Machine Backups

Sep 12, 2010

After having my 1TB G-Tech G-Drive Q desktop external h.d. crap out on me for a second or third time, this time for good, I give up on G-Tech. (I also had a faulty 500GB G-Tech portable which had to be replaced.)For many reasons, my iMac's Time Machine backups have to be stored on an external hard drive rather than on our Time Capsule. Two or three times in the past year or so, the external h.d. has become corrupted or something and has had to be reformatted, losing all the previous backups and starting all over again. This time, since the external h.d. is toast, I have no backups at all.

Hardware :: Desktop / Portable External Hard Drive And Time Machine With AEX

Aug 7, 2010

Would a USB bus-powered portable external hard drive (Like the WD Passport) be slower at backing up than an AC powered desktop external hard drive? I've got a desktop external hard drive that I'm using for Time Machine backups over WiFi connected to an airport extreme, but it's dieing and I'd like to replace it. Preferably I'd like to get a 1gb portable drive so I can use it for both backing up and travelling - however if it will result in slower speeds in transferring data then I'll just get a desktop drive.

OS X Mavericks :: (10.9.3) Can't Delete Time Machine Backups

Jun 21, 2014

I used Time Machine to backup my laptop (Mavericks OS X 10.9.3) onto an external hard drive. Time Machine created multiple backups over a period of time, and I wanted to delete some of the older ones to free up some space. However, I now have 5 different backups in the trash, and when I attempt to empty the trash (secure empty) the trash window pops up and counts over 200,000 items for deletion, but then disappears and deletes absolutely nothing. Now, the trash is always full when I connect the external drive. I tried to move the backups back onto the external, thinking maybe there were too many files for my Mac to handle, but the computer simply started copying the files instead of transferring them. I don't want to reformat the drive or anything like that because I don't just use it for backups and would lose a TON of other work (music, pics, etc.).

How to get the trash to delete these backups? It's not just that the backups won't delete, but I can't delete ANY other files from the external as long as those backups are in the trash.

I did try holding the alt/option key while emptying the trash, but that didn't work at all.

OS X Mavericks :: Corrupted Local Time Machine Backups?

Aug 27, 2014

I recently had the following experience, which is making me thinking about Local Time Machine Backups.

I have a MacBook Pro w Mavericks. I recently had an issue on my 40GB iPhoto Library and had to restore a previous version.

Since I was not at home (so without my Time Capsule), I firstly restored a local time machine backup of the previous day, which was created before the issue to my iPhoto Library. The old iPhoto Library was available by surfing on the local TM snapshots, however, after restore, I had the same issue: the library was corrupted. I tried a 2 days before local snapshot, without success.

Back home, I did a TM restore by using my Time Capsule TM backups, and the library is fully working, without any issue.

Since all the local backup that I tried to restore were related to dates where the iPhoto library was ok, I am wondering if there are any limitations or issues to local time machine backups.

OS X Mavericks :: Restoring Time Machine Files From Unmounted External Drive

Aug 31, 2014

I have a time machine backup I need to restore.  It's a backup from an external drive that has failed.

When I go "enter time machine," I can't see the contents from the external drive anymore to restore it.. because the external drive isn't mounted.  It's not mounted because it has failed.  I can see when I browse the TM backup directly via finder there are files from the amounted drive in the backup... as I'd expect.

So... How do I restore drives from an unmounted external drive?

Do I need to buy a new drive and name it the same as the old drive?  Then will it show up?

OS X Mavericks :: External Hard Drive Not Appearing When Entering Time Machine

Jun 21, 2014

Why does my external hard drive back up on time machine ok, but when I enter time machine (and the external device isn't plugged in) i can't see it?

It appears in time machine fine when the external drive is plugged in, but just not if it's been ejected or

I want to have the ext drive backed up in case I lose it or it corrupts....and if that happens I won't be able to plug it in to see the drive in TM - does that make sense?

I am running OSX 10.9.3 on a Mid 2010 Mac Book Pro. The external drive is a samsung and is formatted to Mac OS Extended (journaled). Time Machine is a standard Apple one and has been working fine for a couple of years

OS X Mavericks :: How To Access Time Machine Backups After Doing Erase / Reinstall

Aug 25, 2014

I recently did a complete erase of my hard drive and re-installed Mavericks. I chose to start clean rather than use any Time Machine back-ups. I used the same external hard drive for my new Time Machine back-ups. Now I cannot open any back-ups/items prior to the re-install via Time Machine. They are listed along the right hand sidebar in Time Machine (star wars view) but will not open when clicked on.

Some files I can access if I go to the actual backup folder - ex a Pages doc BUT ff I try to open the iPhoto library from the back-up folders stored on the external drive, I get the following error message -

I cannot open the iPhoto "package" to access individual photos from these back-ups.

So - how can I get Time Machine to allow access to the pre-install back-ups??

Hardware :: Transfer TC Time Machine Backups To External?

Jan 28, 2009

I just wanted to share my experience and hopefully answer any questions people may have about doing this:

I purchased a 1.5TB HDD and external enclosure to increase the backup size of my 500GB TC, and not wanting to start my backups from scratch I tried copying the sparsebundles to the new drive. To my surprise, I was able to switch my TM source disk to the new drive and the backups picked up where they left off! It proceeded to do an incremental backup, and after it was done I went into Time Machine and could see all the backups from the beginning! Now I can use my TC's internal as storage and keep the external for backups. Hope this helps anyone looking to increase the size of their backups without starting fresh...

MacBook Pro :: Time Machine Backups - Partial Recovery Possible From Corrupt External HD

Jun 5, 2014

I have been using a 1 TB Iomega portable HD as my external HD for Time Machine backups of my early 2011 17" MacBook Pro with a 750GB Internal HD with only 190GB utilized. I just got a Time Machine message:

1) that backup couldn't be performed because of HD problem, and
2) to repair the HD with Disk Utility.

I ran DU Repair Disk and got the following Red Type messages interspersed between normal lines of DU activity reports:

"Invalid Sibling link"The volume Iomega_HDD could not be repaired."Error: Disk Utility can't repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed-up files."

Can I recover the original and older time machine backups from my  ext. HD in a procedure that would allow me to continue backing up with TM but restarting with the most recent recovered "uncorrupted" TM backup as the base, thus allowing me access to older backups?

Or is my ONLY alternative to start Time Machine afresh with a full backup today (on a new ext. HD!), and just deem all those valuable Time Machine backups as lost forever?

OS X :: Time Machine Backups Missing / Unable To Find Backups

Sep 30, 2008

My Time Machine has been making the usual regular backups for a few months onto my Time Capsule. I just found that all the backups prior to about a week ago have vanished. It's not a disaster (I think) as I assume that the current backups reflect what's on my iMac (I haven't had to delete files from it yet).

Where did they go? Why did they go?

A possible connection: My TC is 500GB; my iMac 1TB. I recently put extra files for temporary use onto the iMac hard drive - Time Machine said (in effect) 'that's too much, try removing certain folders from the backup'. I excluded said folder and things seemed okay, but it would be at around the time I did that that my old backups have gone.
