OS X :: Disk Ejects On Sleep And Won't Stop Spinning?
Feb 24, 2010
I replaced my superdisk with a 500 Gb Seagate drive in an optibay enclosure (unibody MBP running 10.6.2). The drive mounts fine on startup, and has not exhibited any unpredictable behavior in the file system, but it frequently ejects and provides me with this unhelpful message:The disk was not ejected properly. If possible, always eject a disk before unplugging it or turning it off. To eject a disk, select it in the Finder and choose File . Eject. The next time you connect the disk, Mac OS X will attempt to repair any damage to the information on the disk.
Once the drive ejects it is not visible in disk utility. I can hear it spinning continuously, but cannot access the drive. Moreover, I cannot access the drive unless I fully shut down the system and then reboot. A restart is often not sufficient to get the drive back up, but a full shutdown has worked every time so far.
The behavior seems to happen when the computer sleeps. I noticed that it would also happen sometimes if I handled the computer roughly by setting it down jarringly, so I took the whole thing apart, and reseated the drive within the enclosure, but the drive still ejects frequently, about once per day.
My MBP has this issue every once in a while where I have to hold the power button and force shut down. Randomly the volume keys/brightness etc. stop working and i can't open apps or shut it down normally. Everything still works though (can still function in open applications) Anyone know what the problem is? It fixes when I force reset.
I have a problem with 2 drives. Was ext. HD Samsung 1.5TB, but I put them like internal on my MAC OSX 10.7.3. After that Those drives start ejecting spontaneously.
I have never had any problems with this SuperDrive, until I installed Toast last week. I went to burn a disk, and it failed the burn; then after that any kind of disk I inserted into the drive would be ejected.
The drive doesn't even try to read it, nor does it try to spin up whatsoever... I put the disk in, it makes an 'accepting' noise, then less than two seconds later, it rejects it. I'm running 10.6.4, with HL-DT-ST DVDRW GSA-S10N running AP12 firmware.
Like I said before, the disk drive never had trouble reading anything, but all of a sudden decided to reject every one under the sun.
Restarting in Windows doesn't effect it, nor does inserting a disk before the computer boots. Everything appears normal in diagnostics, but the drive is not even trying to read it.
Super drive ejects blank CD's & DVD's. Played music CD fine but could not run the system disk for an archive re-install. It made lots of noise & ejected. What can I do to try the re-install. G-5 PPC OS X 10.4.11
I have an external 300gb seagate firewire drive, and I like to keep it attached, and on at all times, as it holds my media files. The problem is, it's constantly spinning down (which I don't mind... I don't like HD failure), the problem is when I attempt certain actions (for instance, putting the computer to sleep (there are many more, I just can't name them all)), my computer has to wait for the ext. hard drive to spin up adding several seconds to whatever action I am attempting to do.
So I guess my question is rather than stop the hard drive from spinning down, is there anything I can do to eradicate the time it takes for it to spin up again?
For the last couple of days my fans have been going crazy, spinning at 6200RPM non stop. I installed fan control last month but the issues just started. When I open up fan control it says my fan should be spinning at 4000RPM. I had smcFanControl installed before and its still installed. My bluetooth module over heated yesterday so I used SMC to rev up the fans. I don't know if that is the issue because it isn't running now. I'll try uninstalling that now.
So my question is.....has anyone tried to dampen the sound of the hard drive from the inside? eg. putting some sort of cloth or tape on it. I can actually dampen the sound from the outside by covering the palm rest with my palm and pressing down. But I would like to get rid of the sound without doing this.
For a couple of days now the activity wheel on my incoming iCloud/mac.com mailbox won't stop spinning.Mail seems 'extra' active in Activity Monitor but I cannont discern what it is doing very long log file with no obvious crashes or repeating patterns (to my amateur eye). There is no send/receive activity indicated in the Mail Activity pane of Mail just the wheel spinning constantly in my mac.com inbox.I seem to receive all the mail sent to that account so nothing obvious being blocked or missing just the constant activity.
I've rebuilt the mailbox but that didn't help.It has been fine up to a couple of days ago and I've not sent nor received any odd or very large files.
Just today I've noticed that the time machine icon in my menu bar won't stop spinning. Finally, I clicked it and it says that it has been "preparing backup" all day long. I stopped the backup just to see if it was a one-time glitch. One hour later, the same thing happened. I gave it thirty minutes and the entire time it said it was "preparing backup"
How can I fix this? I already tried turning TM on and off, that didn't do the trick.
I have a macbook pro, running os X leopard. Whenever I bring it back from sleep the cd drive spins to read what's in it. If nothing is in it it makes 3 rounds of unpleasant noise, then stops. If it's got a cd it spins for a minute or two. Is there any way I can stop this? I know it's kind of a picky thing to complain about, but I've switched to Mac a week ago and it's the only complaint I have so far.
I just got a new Mac Mini, and I notice that when it's in sleep mode, the hard disk is constantly spinning up and then spinning down again. It spins down roughly every thirty seconds, the power light starts blinking in the "I'm sleeping" pattern, but then the drive spins back up in a matter of seconds and the light is on constantly until the next spin-down. I've tried turning off the network, disconnecting the display, fiddling with the Energy Saver settings, quitting all programs, all to no avail. All updates are installed.
I recently did a clean install of Leopard on a brand new hard drive for my Late '06 Mac Pro. I currently have all updates installed, and the system is running very fast and very stable. But! I've been experiencing two problems over the week I've had Leopard installed, and I would just like to know if other MP users are sharing these as well...
1. Half the time I wake the computer from sleep, the fans blast off for about 10 seconds before the desktop is shown. Sometimes when the computer goes to sleep, via Energy Saver, my hard drives keep spinning. 2. Shut down takes an excruciatingly long time. My typical shut down lasts around a minute to a minute and a half.
I've read around and have seen a few problems like this, but I want to know if there are a larger majority of people with a Mac Pro who are experiencing either of these in Leopard. It's not such a nuisance, being I don't have to wait for shut down and I can wait around a few seconds when waking up the computer. Though, here's to hoping 10.5.3 or a firmware update can fix these two issues!
when ever i put in a DVD or Music CD into the disk drive of my macbook, for a few seconds nothing happens then it ejects it.Now im not sure what to do.Have apple look at it, try to clean it, ideas?
When my iMac 27" is in sleep mode I have noticed that the hard drive spins up very regularly every 4 or 5 minutes. Also when placed in sleep, the monitor takes about 30 seconds to go black. It also wakes on its own for no apparent reason. No new software has been added, only normal updates, running Lion. Time machine backup is done every couple weeks.
For some reason my internal hard disk keeps spinning down (and back up always immediately) at what seems random times for no apparent reason, which results in a rather long pause in system response. For instance in the loading screen, when i hear what i believe to be my hard drive spinning down the loading bar (which would normally increase steadily) will stand still for about a minute or two and continue normally afterwards. This is the case for anything that needs to load, like when i'm starting itunes or any other program, if the hard disk spins down while starting up the program it will take a minute or two then start afterwards. Same goes for watching or listening to media, a slight pause will occur. I've also noticed that any commands given while in this "idle" state are stored and will execute afterwards. Like typeing a sentence. The problem started occuring after i got my used hard disk space over 100GB. The system suddenly started going really slow and with hitches, even tough the total capacity is 148,92GB. Simply deleting some data to put it under 100GB again resolved the speed and hitches, but then the the spin downs started to occur.
I've searched the internet for people having similar problems who've already gotten help but without luck. Since i think it's the hard drive i've used Onyx and Disk Utility to repair the permissions on my hard disk, which held the same results : the spin-downs cease after i do it, but every time i restart the spin-downs would simply occur again. Is there any way to solve this permanently? Utility : Bevoegdheden voor 'Macintosh HD' worden hersteld (Permissions for volume 'Macintosh HD' will be repaired.) Determining correct file permissions........
I have seen several threads on the Internet but never an answer to the noise problem Imacs seem to have when in sleep mode. We have an Imac, 27' 10.6.5 2TB bought this summer, in the bedroom which we use as a TV. When we go to sleep we put the Imac to sleep as well with the remote and the ZZZ on the screen. During the night however the Imac fan or harddisk starts to spin as if the whole thing is going to startup but then it winds down again and it does this every hour or so. It is so loud that it wakes us up. Some nights it does it some nights it doesn't. Before we actually had the screen come on too but now it doesn't do that anymore.
Is there a way to to STOP the mac from going to sleep when the lid is closed???? I REALLY hate this, This should be an option for US to choose if we want to do that or not. Am I missing a setting somewhere? I hope so!
I ask because I'm using remote tap on iPhone to remote into my iMac when I'm away. It sleeps it and wakes it just fine remotely. But when it's asleep too long, remote tap will fail to wake it, and the only thing that will wake it is if I hit a button on the keyboard or mouse. Is there a way to just keep it in normal sleep(?) or something?
