I have a Mid 2010 15" Macbook Pro, and I want to connect an external hard drive over eSATA. My model of MBP does not have an ExpressCard/34 slot, but instead an SD card reader slot. Is there an adapter that works that would allow me to connect an external hard drive over eSATA?

I just did a search and found nothing but an extremely lengthy thread that makes no sense and doesn't even answer the question. I just want a simple answer here: I have a new 17" '09 uMBP. I want to use my eSata external hard drives. What expresscard adapter should I buy? I was transferring stuff over via USB and was horrified: 25 minutes to transfer 20 gigs of pictures! 20 gigs should take no more than 5, maybe 10 minutes tops over eSata (as it did on my old laptop). So which eSata-Expresscard actually works for the uMBP's?
View 11 Replies View RelatedI'm looking for a way to connect an external bus-powered Firewire 800 hard drive (Glyph Portagig 800) to an iMac which only has Firewire 400 ports, and still powering the drive through just the Firewire connector.
All I've found are Firewire 400 to 800 adapters, allowing Firewire 400 peripherals to be connected to computers having only Firewire 800 ports. I need the opposite of course.
Where can I get such adapters, and without sacrificing bus-power?
I have a 2010 macbook pro with snowleopard on it & have a 7 port ac powered usb hub hooked up to it. If I plug in 1 or more external hard drives into the hub & have them working together/transferring files, will there be a big slowdown?right now my hard drives are in just usb 2.0 enclosures. Would it be worth upgrading their enclosures to firew wire - esata? would I feel a performance difference?

My external hard drive is connected to a 400 firewire port but the new mbp's have 800 firewire ports. I have an adapter but for some reason the external doesn't show up. It works on my old macbook but not on this new one, doesn't even show up in the disk utilities. Do the fire wire ports have to match up in speed? Can my backup and the files be saved?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a Powerbook G4. It doesn't have an internal wireless card so I bought a Linksys wireless adapter to plug into the side of my computer when I first got the computer. It worked fine for years. I recently reformatted the hard drive and now when I insert the wireless adapter it no longer will allow me to connect to the internet. I'm aware that Linksys doesn't have drivers for Mac users so I'm confused as to how I got it to work in the first place. I don't remember installing any third party software, but I may have, it was a few years ago. Does anyone have any suggestions what I should do to allow me to use my linksys card in my Mac? I've heard of Orangeware but I'm not sure if that's the solution. The adapter is a WPC54G
Oh one last thing, when I plug the card in, an icon appears in the top right corner that shows something is plugged into the port but doesn't allow me to click on it and search for wireless connections.
I have an external hard drive, it's been working fine and i have all of my mac info backed up on it. Also i have lots of windows stuff on it. All working fine without any issues... Until.With no reason it will not mount, there is power going to it and the lights are on and it's turning over but i cant seem to access it in OSX, it works fine in vista.I haven't formatted it and i havent lost any information on it.

I have a SATA drive that works when it's in an external USB enclosure but when I put the same SATA drive in one of the bays in my Mac Pro, the Mac Pro won't start up.Specifics:-I've reformatted the drive (with GUID and with Mac Partition Map), with no change in behavior-A different drive in the same Mac Pro drive bay works fine, so it's not the drive bay-the suspect drive in any of drive bay keeps the computer from booting (grey screen, no apple)

I recently bought too an eSata powered cable and a express card esata who came with it. The hard drive can't be detect on my macbook pro unibody late 2008 2,4" but runs. I install the silicon image drivers non-SL and adding over that the SL drivers.

I have a WD Mybook Essential Edition external hard drive that is dedicated to the Mac that I am trying to connect through USB to my Linksys router (WRT 610N).
I have spent no less than 14 hours on the phone with Linksys, can't get through to Western Digital, and Applecare tells me they don't work with PC hardware.
But is there a preferred brand of adapter to connect a monitor with a DVI port to the Mini DisplayPort on my 15" MBP, like Monster? Or what do you all recommend?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have an elderly Q950 with an external hard drive with everything backed up onto it. The external drive is a Micronet ADV1000E, with a sticker on the back saying it's Macintosh or PC compatible. I also have an iBook laptop, & PC Dell Inspiron 1300 laptop. As I have the 2 laptops, the Quadra hadn't been switched on for maybe one year. On the weekend I tried to get it to boot up (with & without the external drive switched on), but all it does is display a grey screen with an image of a 3.5" disk with a '?' in the middle. If I start up from a Norton 3.5" disk it still can't find the external or internal drive. If I try booting up with my finger in the shift key it doesn't want to know.
1. Any idea why the Quadra isn't seeing either the external or internal drive & what can I try to do?
2. Is there any way I can connect my external drive to either my iBook or Dell? At the moment I have no cables to connect the old & new - are cables available & if so any idea where from? I've looked high & low but so far no joy.
3. Is it possible to remove the hard drive from the Quadra or the external drive & put in an external drive enclosure, then connect that to either laptop? I see there are drive enclosures available which are Mac & pc compatible. This by the way would be a major undertaking for me. I'm by no means a computer dunce but would be wary of trying it.
I have the new 15 in MBP and bought a e-sata express card from OWC which is the Apiotek Extreme Dual e-sata [URL]. At first it could not be seen so I went to there site and downloaded the driver for it and got several grey screens of death kernel panics. I know the Sonnet Tempo SATA Pro ExpressCard/34 is supposed to work on the new unibody but after all that I bought to get this system up to the speed I need, was trying to avoid another 280 dollars and want another 4gb Ram chip more. [URL]. I am only running one external drive like this for PS scratch, OS backup and a working drive that is partitioned in 3 sections. Wondering if there is another express card that is working in the new 15 in 2.93 without any issues.

My problem is that i cannot find the external hard drive which is connected to the iMac. I tried to assign the external storage as shared folder. That didnt work. I get unexpected problems with a dual 1.8 G5 (2 GB RAM, 2 disks inside, both 320 GB). In fact, the machine seems to break any hard drive I plug in it (via USB, eSata or internal HD). The internal hard drive hosting the system is clicking every five minutes or so, and two external hard drives are now mostly unsable (they unexpectedly unmount when copying, or they just don't mount at all). I checked them all with DiskWarrior. Some times, they can be repaired, sometimes not.
The problems appear with Tiger and Leopard as well. I lost Time Machine backups form an external hard drive (Seagate 320GB, got "keys out of order" error message in DiskUtility). The other external HD I have to put my photos (750 GB Seagate) can be used in both eSATA via Lacie PCI card and USB. Both USB and eSATA fail unexpectedly (unmount while copying) and everytime the hard drives seems to fail more and more everytime I try to use them.
I used Apple products since years '80 (SE30) and did not have problems whatsoever with previous machine and my actual macbook Pro. This G5 is getting me crazy, and I don't want to put hundreds of dollars repairing since it is worth less than 800$ actually... Is it the power supply, the logic board, a problem with electric voltage up and down? I always found solutions to problems but now, it is the first time I don't see the light... I feel like everytime I plug a hard drive in this G5, I play with fire and may loose my backups and archives!
I have installed my new eSATA Newertech cable in my Mac Pro. I want to install windows XP on this external drive, because I have the Apple RAID Card.
I started Boot Camp Config, but I can not install the Windows Partition on the external drive. The external drive is not listed in boot camp.
What can I do? Is there a tutorial to install windows XP / Vista on a external drive (connected via eSATA) when you have a RAID Card?
I have a late 2009 iMac with Firewire 800 input on the back. I have a Western Digital Passport external hard drive with USB Micro-B input that I would like to connect to the Firewire (4 USB inputs aren't nearly enough on the iMac). Okay so I'm thinking of putting a Intel SSD in my MacBook Pro 13" as soon the next generation is launched thus removing the SuperDrive in order to fit both drives. I haven't used it a lot of times but a few times I do need it and that's why I'm now asking this question.
What external DVD enclosure will work with the MBP SuperDrive if any and how will i eject the DVDs. I'm not going to shell out a 100 bucks plus shipping to Sweden for the MCE Optibay so that's out of question, however cheaper ebay alternative that ships to Sweden with reasonable shipping is okay.
Also while I'm here. I've been thinking about upgrading to 8GB ram kit however a friend of mine told me any ddr3 sodimm ram won't work which sounds weird but to be safe I'm asking if that's true? I'm thinking of buying a Corsair 8GB(2x4GB) 1333MHz kit.
I recently got a few external HDD, and for the life of me couldn't find any Firewire equipped enclosures. Seems eSata and USB have taken the standard.
So I decided to just suck it up and use USB.
Now apple has taken away the express card slot, is there any way to utilise eSata on a MBP? The only conceivable way would be through firewire.
I'm going to have to pop a larger hard drive in this Macbook (2007) to buy a little time before I replace the computer. I have a late 2008 12" MacBook with a FireWire 400 slot (only). I am hooking up an 8TB Raid hard drive to it for digitizing, backup and editing on FCP 6 and would like to have a higher speed available than the laptop's FireWire 400 provides. Is there a way to augment/build out the MacBook to utilize either a FireWire 800 slot or an eSATA EC2 card? I don't think this version of the MacBook (MacBook4,1) has a PCI or PCIe card slot. Although I believe it may have a mini-PCIe card somewhere, as the last page of the Users Guide says (under Europe—EU Declaration of Conformity):

The past few months I've made threads asking about eSata express cards and external storage and have received useful information. However, I've always neglected to ask this obvious and direct question. I've been recommended a few cards, one from OWC always comes up. But I never bothered to ask about "dual" versions because I thought I'd be able to find it on my own.
After weeks of casually looking around I wasted a few hours yesterday hard core searching online. I really need a storage solution for my exploding cache of photos and video that's been stockpiling and needs editing.
Perhaps FW800 or another interface could be a better solutions. But when I choose my new MBP 17" a few months ago I specifically kept the fact it retained the express card slot in mind because of it's higher transfer rates.
I'd get 1 TB but I'm thinking realistically I need 2+ TB of storage... and also I think I need to finally get my rear in gear about redundancy. I use Time Machine with an external FW400 HDD and back up my music separately there too but want to keep in mind future space should have redundancy in mind.
I have the very first MacBook (1.83GHz, white). My brother tested it with his charger, which works fine for his MacBook, and he said it flashes a very dim green when plugged in, and the MacBook will not charge or turn on. Could it be a DC in-board issue? What could it be?
