OS X Mavericks :: Finder Keeps Asking For Password When Making Changes?

Jun 5, 2014

I am running OS X 10.9.3 (13D65) on the late MPR 15".

When I want to make changes to my folders on an external harddrive(LaCie), Finder keeps asking me for my password, which is getting fairly annoying.

I have already tried the method where one boots into recovery and uses the "resetpassword" command.

OS X Mavericks :: Finder Beach Balling - Failed Setting Front Application To Finder - Error?

Jun 3, 2014

I upgraded my MacBook Pro quad core 2.5 from Lion to Mavericks. Since then I get a LOT of beachballs when I'm using Finder. I repaired permissions, deleted com.apple.finder.plist (twice) and finally reinstalled Mavericks over the first one. Still painfully slow and lots of beachballs.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Did Finder Change Some Modification Dates When Making A Copy?

Jun 8, 2012

I just copied a very large number of files using Finder and I discovered that some modification dates were changed.  For me this wasn't a problem, but it's strange and I don't understand why it happened.  I wonder if anyone else has seen a similar behavior.  Here are the details:

I have a Mac Pro running under OSX 10.7.4 with 15 GB of RAM and 7 hard disks.  The disks details are as follows: Internal 1 is 500 GB and came with the computer.  It is my boot drive and has a variety of material.  It's about 75% full.

Internal 2 is 1 TB.  It has OSX 10.6.8 on it for use as a repair disk if I need to run TechTools against my main drive or if I need to run SpringCleaning.  It is about 85% full and contains mainly videos of one type or another.

Internal 3 is 2 TB.  It is 98% full and contains mostly .jpg files.  This drive has a single root folder with 3-4 levels of subfolders.  Some subfolders have as many as 5000 folders in them.  The bottom level folders each have anywhere from 20 to 300 files.

Internal 4 is 3 TB.  It was purchased last week because drives 2 and 3 are getting full.  My intent is to copy drive 3 to 4, then copy the data from 2 to 3.  I'll probably retire 2 since my SMART checks are showing problems.

External 1 is 3 TB and is used only for Time Machine to backup internal 1.

External 2 is 4 TB and is used to backup Internal 2 and 3 using ChronoSync.  I'll be changing this to 3 and 4 soon.

4 days ago I installed drive 4 and used Finder to copy the root folder from drive 3 to 4.  That took about a day.  I then ran ChronoSync in Trial Sync mode to see if everything was OK.  (Perhaps I shold have used ChronSync to make the transfer.)  I discovered that about 8,000 files had discrepancies.  I wrote a simple AppleScript to identify any meta data differences between the files on the two drives.  It's been running for about 12 hours and I suspect it will take more than a day to finish.  So far all that script has found are modification date differences.  I've examined about a dozen of the files and they look OK.

Anyone seen anything like this?  Any ideas what happened?  I have three user accounts on this Mac Pro.  The copy was made in one account with nothing else running, but I was doing a variety of work in another account.  The third account was not active. I just did a better search of this forum and discovered a similar case from 2010.

OS X Mavericks :: Mail Asks For Password Upon Launch Then Crashes When Password Is Entered

Jul 1, 2014

For the last week or so I've been having an increasingly regular problem with Mail. Upon launching, the app opens a dialog window saying, "Mail can't connect to the Google account 'Gmail'. Enter the password for user (username)." Then when I enter the password, the app crashes. Sometimes clicking the "Cancel" botton allows the app to open, but sometimes that results in a crash as well. Also, when I can launch Mail successfully, sometimes when I try to send mail, the outgoing mail will sit in the Outbox unsent.

I've been getting these warnings with both my Yahoo and Gmail accounts. Until a few days ago I was using Yahoo as my primary account, but the inability to send mail caused me to switch to Gmail as my primary. After a couple days of smooth sailing, I'm now getting the same errors with my Gmail.

Software :: OS X Need Admin Password To Move Files From Finder To Desktop?

Feb 18, 2010

I have two accounts a standard user account that I use all of the time and a separate admin account to use when I need to. Okay, so I just started my mac up and was creating some new folders and moving files from my user folder to my desktop (on my standard account). OS 10.5 comes up with a box asking for an admin password to make changes. It also does this when I try to move files to the trash. How do I fix this permissions error? (I've already tried repairing permissions and that didn't work)

Suddenly Finder keeps asking me to input my password whenever I delete a file to the trash. Emptying the trash is fine, though.I thought maybe I had clicked an option in Onyx that caused this, but having looked several times, I can't see anything in Onyx that would cause this. I've tried repairing disk permissions using Disk Utility, with no effect.

MacBook Pro :: Making Making Cracking Sounds While Opening

Sep 27, 2009

Since about the 3rd day after I got my macbook pro the computer has been making cracking sounds when I open it. When it first started it just simply made one clicking sound when the hinge is halfway open. Now however, When it is open it makes cracking sounds that don't stop ( open 15 cracking sounds per open). Is this a serious issue that I need to address with my local (and very mean) genius or is this issue not going to continue to get progressively worse. If this does continue to get worse will the hinge crack open? what is this worst that could happen?

OS X Mavericks :: Tagging Hangs Finder

Sep 11, 2014

I am struggling with tags. I can watch the activity monitor on the server as we tag and see the finder spike thru the roof (then beach ball for two minutes!) even when tagging just 40 files. If I tag just one file I am getting the finder up to almost 50% activity.Interestingly, I also have someone tagging files over the network using the same iCloud account and I'm seeing huge activity spikes in icbaccountsd and sometimes quicklookd. I don't know if they are related but I can say that the networked machine also experiences difficulties in the same way.The files are on (various) external RAID enclosures that are connected via eSATA or SAS.

It seems only to affect the Finder because any apps running (even Premiere CC 2014 which is accessing projects and footage on those RAIDs over the network) seem to be fine. Even as the Finder goes thru the roof and then crashes. The problem also persists when tagging files on the internal hard drive. I just selected 3000 jpegs, tagged them all with ONE original tag and... BOOM Finder (Not Responding) 198% CPU and beach ball for two minutes. Then the finder goes back to being responsive.

I understand that this is NOT the norm and I'm not seeing many similar complaints. We have already forced the server to re-build the spotlight index. Next I am going to move the RAID to another computer and will update with results.I really hope that Apple takes tags all the way. Currently the foundation is there but searching is lame and tagging a lot of files is slow even without the issues above. Too much clicking...

OS X Mavericks :: Finder Is Slow After 10.9.3 Update?

Jun 17, 2014

After the OSX 10.9.3 update, whenever I open Finder for the first time, it takes 20-30 seconds to load (beachball is spinning the whole time). I've read other posts where people post the log from Console, so here it goes. This is what comes up as soon as I click on Finder.

6/17/14 9:00:50.264 AM WindowServer[13300]: disable_update_timeout: UI updates were forcibly disabled by application "Finder" for over 1.00 seconds. Server has re-enabled them.

6/17/14 9:01:04.264 AM WindowServer[13300]: disable_update_likely_unbalanced: UI updates still disabled by application "Finder" after 15.00 seconds (server forcibly re-enabled them after 1.00 seconds). Likely an unbalanced disableUpdate call.

6/17/14 9:01:11.024 AM WindowServer[13300]: common_reenable_update: UI updates were finally reenabled by application "Finder" after 21.76 seconds (server forcibly re-enabled them after 1.00 seconds)

Also, if I leave Finder alone for not even a minute and then come back to it, it is frozen w/ beachball and have to wait another 20-30 sec before it's responsive again.

OS X Mavericks :: Beachball - Finder Not Responding

Jun 30, 2014

After I boot and log in if I attempt to open a drive or folder that's on my desktop it causes the Finder to be non-responsive and a beach ball persists. In the window of "Force Quit Applications" it reads "Finder (not responding)". If I force quit finder it will quit and relaunch, but then the same scenerio all over again. If I do a Spotlight search for say an App that's not in my dock and then select it I can get any App to launch. If I choose an App from my dock I can get it to launch. If I attempt to restart the machine while the beach ball is spinning the restart will be ignored and I have to hard shutdown and startup via the power button.

I also have another user account, on this system, which has the same problems.

I've run DU permissions repair and ran all weekly and monthly scripts via Onyx.

Booting in Safe Mode has the same effect.

Console

If I run Console and attempt to open a drive, on my desktop, I get:

"6/30/14 11:01:28.710 AM WindowServer[174]: disable_update_timeout: UI updates were forcibly disabled by application "Finder" for over 1.00 seconds. Server has re-enabled them."

"6/30/14 11:01:42.711 AM WindowServer[174]: disable_update_likely_unbalanced: UI updates still disabled by application "Finder" after 15.00 seconds (server forcibly re-enabled them after 1.00 seconds). Likely an unbalanced disableUpdate call."

What can I do to restore the finder and get it working again?

Edit in: running 10.9.3 on a 2010 Mac Pro.
