OS X Mavericks :: Can Add More Columns In Finder?
Aug 26, 2014
I'm a person that loves data and wouldn't it be good for users to be able to customize the column with even more information? Like being able to add more columns to better filter files in our computer.

I prefer to use the column view for the finder. The thing is that I always have to enable it when open some new folder. Is it possible to always view in columns instead of icons?

The title pretty much explains it.
Every time I change from list view to column view, it changes it back after I close the window.
Is there any way I can make it stay in column view?

I've read the other posts about this issue, but have not found a thread addressing automatic resizing a Finder column width to the longest filename. Is there a trick to configure Finder to do this? So far it looks like only a manual double-click of the column handle will accomplish this.

I upgraded my MacBook Pro quad core 2.5 from Lion to Mavericks. Since then I get a LOT of beachballs when I'm using Finder. I repaired permissions, deleted com.apple.finder.plist (twice) and finally reinstalled Mavericks over the first one. Still painfully slow and lots of beachballs.

My finder simply does not work, nor does, for instance, my Disk Utility, nor my "About This Mac". However, System Preferences works, most download apps work. I do not have Google Drive, and thus cannot unsync it.
It's a 2009 MB White, plastic case, 4gb ram, softwareRAID, 120GB HDD, Core 2 Duo Intel
I'm also worried that my hard drive is failing altogether.

I was wondering how to add columns in Pages. In Word, I would add a column and then when I typed to the end of the page, it would print at the top of the page on the right. I don't need to add a column in a table.

I've been playing around with my spaces setup and I'd like to know if it's possible to unlock 5 spaces in a row (columns), as opposed to the current limit of 4 columns and x amount of rows. Maybe I'm just being picky but, when it comes to spaces. I like being able to just move horizontally from beginning to end without getting lost when additional rows are attributed.

I am struggling with tags. I can watch the activity monitor on the server as we tag and see the finder spike thru the roof (then beach ball for two minutes!) even when tagging just 40 files. If I tag just one file I am getting the finder up to almost 50% activity.Interestingly, I also have someone tagging files over the network using the same iCloud account and I'm seeing huge activity spikes in icbaccountsd and sometimes quicklookd. I don't know if they are related but I can say that the networked machine also experiences difficulties in the same way.The files are on (various) external RAID enclosures that are connected via eSATA or SAS.
It seems only to affect the Finder because any apps running (even Premiere CC 2014 which is accessing projects and footage on those RAIDs over the network) seem to be fine. Even as the Finder goes thru the roof and then crashes. The problem also persists when tagging files on the internal hard drive. I just selected 3000 jpegs, tagged them all with ONE original tag and... BOOM Finder (Not Responding) 198% CPU and beach ball for two minutes. Then the finder goes back to being responsive.
I understand that this is NOT the norm and I'm not seeing many similar complaints. We have already forced the server to re-build the spotlight index. Next I am going to move the RAID to another computer and will update with results.I really hope that Apple takes tags all the way. Currently the foundation is there but searching is lame and tagging a lot of files is slow even without the issues above. Too much clicking...

Now my finder is frozen. When I open finder I see a lot of windowo all piled on top of each other and I am not able to click on anything and see my files. I read somewhere that Google Drive causes problems but can't find the article. I cannot afford to get rid of my files in Google Drive. I do not have a lot of computer experience and am somewhat afraid I will do something that will make me loose a good deal of information on my computer. Have the same problem when I try and access Mackintosh HD from my desktop. I have shut down and restarted computer.

I am running OS X 10.9.3 (13D65) on the late MPR 15".
When I want to make changes to my folders on an external harddrive(LaCie), Finder keeps asking me for my password, which is getting fairly annoying.
I have already tried the method where one boots into recovery and uses the "resetpassword" command.

After the OSX 10.9.3 update, whenever I open Finder for the first time, it takes 20-30 seconds to load (beachball is spinning the whole time). I've read other posts where people post the log from Console, so here it goes. This is what comes up as soon as I click on Finder.
6/17/14 9:00:50.264 AM WindowServer[13300]: disable_update_timeout: UI updates were forcibly disabled by application "Finder" for over 1.00 seconds. Server has re-enabled them.
6/17/14 9:01:04.264 AM WindowServer[13300]: disable_update_likely_unbalanced: UI updates still disabled by application "Finder" after 15.00 seconds (server forcibly re-enabled them after 1.00 seconds). Likely an unbalanced disableUpdate call.
6/17/14 9:01:11.024 AM WindowServer[13300]: common_reenable_update: UI updates were finally reenabled by application "Finder" after 21.76 seconds (server forcibly re-enabled them after 1.00 seconds)
Also, if I leave Finder alone for not even a minute and then come back to it, it is frozen w/ beachball and have to wait another 20-30 sec before it's responsive again.

After I boot and log in if I attempt to open a drive or folder that's on my desktop it causes the Finder to be non-responsive and a beach ball persists. In the window of "Force Quit Applications" it reads "Finder (not responding)". If I force quit finder it will quit and relaunch, but then the same scenerio all over again. If I do a Spotlight search for say an App that's not in my dock and then select it I can get any App to launch. If I choose an App from my dock I can get it to launch. If I attempt to restart the machine while the beach ball is spinning the restart will be ignored and I have to hard shutdown and startup via the power button.
I also have another user account, on this system, which has the same problems.
I've run DU permissions repair and ran all weekly and monthly scripts via Onyx.
Booting in Safe Mode has the same effect.
Console
If I run Console and attempt to open a drive, on my desktop, I get:
"6/30/14 11:01:28.710 AM WindowServer[174]: disable_update_timeout: UI updates were forcibly disabled by application "Finder" for over 1.00 seconds. Server has re-enabled them."
"6/30/14 11:01:42.711 AM WindowServer[174]: disable_update_likely_unbalanced: UI updates still disabled by application "Finder" after 15.00 seconds (server forcibly re-enabled them after 1.00 seconds). Likely an unbalanced disableUpdate call."
What can I do to restore the finder and get it working again?
Edit in: running 10.9.3 on a 2010 Mac Pro.

I have been troubleshooting this issue. It has something to do with Finder and disks,Running Mac Pro 5,1 with Mavericks 10.9,3 with 10Gb RAM (2x1Gb stock + 2x4Gb), SSD for primary OS drive, 2 TB HDD for Home folder. Have a few other HDD's in the Mac Pro and an external drive for Time Machine
Problems include;Disk Images no longer unmountHard drives (SSD, Home HD, Bootcamp drive) no longer list contents in Finder although Time Machine drive, and 2 other HDD's do list contentsDisk Utility freezes when launched (Freezes at Gathering disk information...)When trying to reboot, Finder becomes unresponsive and can't quit, when force quit, hangs on Grey screen pre-spin progress indicator and required hard shutdown (power button for several seconds)
Tried fixes (in order of trying);Reinstalled fresh copy of MavericksSwitched HD for Home folder (it was giving me SMART warnings)Switched HD's around within the MacZap PRAMInstalled Mavericks on a single drive and things seemed to work fine for several days, so I thought it was my SSDReplaced SSD and reinstalled OS, But now after a day it's doing it again
Other info : I am running CrashPlan which seems to be able to read the disks and back up files (so it seems).Time Machine seems to be backing everything up on schedule..I can run Terminal command "diskutil list" and all the drives show up..I can mount new dmg files, but the contents do not show up but the drive does show up in the Terminal command
When I go to eject them, they stay shown in Finder but are no longer listed in the Terminal command.Activity Monitor shows Disk Utility as hanging, but no other odd indicators.Memory Pressure shows low green in the graph. When I hard shutdown and startup again, everything works for awhile perfectly, but then the problems start showing up.

Having switched recently from Entourage to Mac mail, there is one thing that i am missing and would like some help. I have a large inbox and normally find mail by clicking on the "From" column header, to sort the by the names of people sending me mails. Using entourage I would then press "d" on the keyboard to take me the first name begining with d. However in Mail when I press d, it takes me to the first email in which the subject line starts with a d. How do I get it to take me to the first name begining with d?

I am looking at files with the Finder in "column" format. When I select a file in the list, I see a preview of its content as well as details, like the kind of file, its size and the creation, modification and last access timestamps. The strange thing is that the dates are formatted differently for different files. I have seen the following variants:
Friday, August 15, 2008 at 24:47
Aug 7, 2012, 22:30
14/09/13, 06:23
I can't see any reason why the formatting would be different. Obviously ls and stat show no difference: they consistently show the same formatting. For example, for a file that the finder shows as "14/09/13, 06:23", here is what ls and stat show:
$ ls -l /Volumes/DATA/Photos/2013/57998_1789225293766_1545314_n.jpg

i deal with a lot of data and i would very much like a feature that lets me expand all folders (and subfolders) and collapse all folders (and subfolders). the reason i need this is i sometimes want to dig out all the contents of a set of nested folders or view them in coverflow (what an invention!!!!). if i do this manually it involves a lot of carpal tunnel inducing repetitive and very tedious operations and - conversely - when i am done i have to manually close up all these folders or finder (i believe) will remember to leave the ones that were open opened which means i either have to clean this up then by closing all the folders or i have to do it later when i open them.
i tried to address this about a year and a half ago and i can't recall if i got good answers to get this finished or not but i do know that some of what i said may be technically incorrect but when taken as a whole the system is glitched enough to cause a lot of repetitive work and the rationale is confusing enough to make it hard to figure out why it is doing what it is doing (if there is any reason except sheer oversight in any case).

I'm using a new MacBook Pro running Mac OS X Mavericks Version 10.9.3.The behaviour I want to change happens when I have a Finder window maximised.
If I open a file in the open folder, the finder "slides" offscreen, to the right, as the file opens. When I close the file, instead of the Finder window I see the desktop.
If I'm working through a folder with lots of file I have to check or alter, this is a massive waste of time. How to change the settings so that Finder simply stays open?
