OS X :: MacBook Won't Boot / Then, It Would Not Start Up?

Jul 8, 2009

Yesterday, it froze and I could not force quit anything, so I turned it off by holding the power key. Then, it would not start up. At first, it simply would go to the screen with the gray apple or go to the blue screen, but would sit there. Now, it the screen simply lights up (gray?), and sometimes a folder with a question mark comes up. My Apple Care ran out a little over a month ago, so I'm hoping it's a cheap fix, such as replacing the hard drive. Here's what I've tried:Resetting the power managerbooting from the install CD (I got a folder with a question mark when I held down C to boot, and D for the diagnostic tools).Letting it sit overnight, hoping the issue would magically resolve on its ownOne note: when I try to start it up, there is a repeating quiet click that keeps going until I turn it off again. I would think I just need a new hard drive, but I'm not sure why I couldn't boot from the CD. My backup is Time Machine, not a clone, so no option there. How can I know for sure if it's the hard drive? If it is, any recommendations on what to get would be great, as well as a tutorial on replacing a hard drive on a MacBook.

MacBook :: Won't Boot / Tried To Start It Back Up It Would Not Boot Up?

Feb 10, 2009

Ok so my macbook just froze up on me, and I shut it off manually. However, when I tried to start it back up it would not boot up. I am just receiving a message telling me " You need to restart your computer. Hold down the Power button for several seconds or press the Restart button. "I did what the message told me to do, and when I started the computer back up I just received the same exact message. I tried to take the battery out and hold down the power button to discharge any electricity in the laptop, and then I plugged in the power cable with the battery still out, and I am still receiving the same error message.I have tried the same process a couple of times and put the battery back in and then I decided to try inserting the Installation DVD, and it did nothing different then what I have been getting.

MacBook Pro :: Wont Start Up But Boot Camp Will

Dec 2, 2009

I have a stock 2.53GHz 15" Unibody MacBook Pro (Oct 08) this morning when I started her up, she just went into the blank blue screen, and there was the rotating icon at the bottom of the screen. It would loop over and over. The icon would disappear, then reappear in a bit. I know it's not the hard disk, as I just booted into my Boot Camp partition which works perfectly. I'm on the latest snow leopard 10.6.2 if I'm not wrong?

MacBook Pro :: Kernel Error On Start Up - Also Cannot Boot From OS X CD

May 4, 2012

On bootup, my computer shows this: [URL] and won't start. If I try to boot from an OSX startup CD, it flashes between that, the ordinary apple, and circle with a bar through it, but won't move beyond that. So I then power up holding Command + S and I get this: [URL]. I'm not sure what the problem is, but I want my computer back!

My wife did an improper shut down by holding the power key while something was working on it. She is running mavericks on the system. Now it will start to boot and shut down when progress bar gets half way. Disk utility says it can not fix problems, and when I try to reinstall mavericks from disk utility, it either says hd is locked, or it won't show me hd.

We have no system disk, so how can I fix this?

Windows On Mac :: Boot Camp Won't Start

I'm running the latest high end 21.5" iMac and I've had Windows 7 64 bit working through boot camp and VMWare Fusion since I got the computer. Everything's been fine, but now all of a sudden, windows won't start through boot camp. When I start up the computer, I select boot camp and it freezes. Still works through VMWare.

Windows On Mac :: Won't Start With Boot Camp

Jan 20, 2009

I'm running the latest update of Leopard and Windows XP SP2 in a 20 GB FAT32 partition, on a 24" iMac Al (Fall 2007). I've been out of the country for the last 5 months, but when I left my computer, safe and sound at home, XP booted fine with Boot Camp. I had the latest Mac OS software as of August 2008.

Now, I've returned and the first thing I did was Software update and refresh my system. I've tried to boot in Windows, and I got a black screen with a blinking white underscore on the top left corner - the operating system doesn't load.

Does anyone know of any software updates that could have affected my Windows installation? I somehow doubt that, without use, the Windows installation managed to screw itself up, but I suppose it is Windows, isn't it?

Mac Pro :: System Drive Not Boot From Start Up

Mar 15, 2010

I have a Mac Pro, Intel quad core, with several HDs, 2 of which are bootable. One runs Mac OSX 10.4.9 (and houses Pro Tools HD 7.4) and the other runs 10.5.8 (with Pro Tools HD 8.0.2). The Tiger disk is absolutely fine but the Leopard disk will not boot from a stand-still. It can be booted from Startup Disk in System Preferences but if it was the last drive in use then trying boot from off results in a permanent hang on the grey screen. A workaround is holding ALT on startup and choose the Tiger disk but this shouldn't be happening so has anyone experienced this and solved it? I'm trying to avoid a full re-instal but that is an option.

OS X :: Boot Camp Screwed Up Start Up Sequence?

Apr 4, 2009

I tried installing Windows XP on to my MacBook running Leopard last November using an XP installment disk that came with a Dell Desktop. So that worked out well, until Boot Camp told me to print out an instruction sheet. Well, I don't have a printer connected to my MacBook, so I continued the installation without it.

The installation apparently 'finished' so I clicked "finish" but the whole installation process went back to the beginning, so I had to force quit the installation (my MacBook was running from just the disk, not 'Macintosh HD'). By the way, I went through the installation process a couple of times before I thought "this is just keep on repeating."

Well, whenever I go to boot up my MacBook now, a message comes up in a black background with white writing saying "No bootable disk, press any key to continue." Pressing any key doesn't work, so I have to hold down the power button (which I hate doing since it's apparently bad for the HDD) to turn it off, and I now have to hold down the alt/option key whenever I start up my Mac. By the way, the only disk that comes up is 'Macintosh HD', not the 'Windows HD' I partitioned earlier, which I have now deleted. My question is, what else can I do to completely erase this message I get at the start up?

OS X :: Slow Start Up After Boot Camp Removal

- reinstalling the software

- deleting the PRAM

- selecting the Mac HDD as Startup disk but to no avail.

- scanned/fixed/verify all permissions

something must have corrupted the MAC OS...can anyone suggest a way out of this slow boot up? Its like having a ferrari but can only move after a rolling start.

Windows On Mac :: Boot Disk Not Visible At Start Up?

Aug 30, 2009

I recently installed windows 7 (7001) on a new drive (750gb) and re-formatted my old windows 7 drive (80gb) to be used as a backup for OS X. After that the windows boot drive was not available at start-up. Here is how it went:

original set up:
HD (os x)
Windows drive (80gb)

after new drive:
HD (os x)
windows drive (80gb and 750gb) I had windows 7 installed on both drives and at windows boot was given two choices of windows 7.

This worked fine until I reformatted the old 80gb drive to be a second mac drive and at start-up the windows boot drive was not visible only HD (os x). The windows drive is still visible on the os x desktop (all files are visible) but not under "disk startup" in the preferences pane.

current set-up:
HD (os x)
mac backup (80gb)
windows 7 (750gb) not bootable

I tried booting from windows 7 disk to repair but it does not recognize any bootable windows drive. Should I go through bootcamp utility to repair the windows drive?

Windows On Mac :: Installation Won't Start Through Boot Camp

Jul 6, 2010

I am currently on a macbook that I bought in the summer of 2008, and I just decided I wanted to be able to run Windows on my laptop. I found my WindowsXP installation disk, a factory disk, and opened up boot camp to install Windows. I was following instructions from another thread on another computer I have at home. I got through partitioning my disk and got the windowsXP installation ready to begin when I realized I couldn't find my MacOSX disk, and thus wouldn't be able to install the Windows drivers after installing Windows (I was running Mac OS X 10.5.8), so I stopped the installation there and un-partitioned my harddrive. I then ordered Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.3, and I just received the CD today. I installed Snow Leopard, then did the same thing that I did before with boot camp and partitioned my drive. However, this time when I got to the part where I put in my Windows disk, the computer reboots and starts, but the Windows installation won't begin. It just sits at a black screen with a blinking cursor in the top left corner. I've tried giving it over 30 minutes to start but it just won't go. Logically I would assume there's a problem with the disk, but I used this same disk less than a week ago and got halfway through the installation without any problems. Why won't my WindowsXP installer disk boot up?

Windows On Mac :: Boot Camp Start Up Disk?

Jul 14, 2010

Have had boot camp working just how I wanted it (default boot into W7) since day 1, but have just had a problem! All of a sudden, the MBP boots into OSX by default. If I hold option (alt), I do have the option to boot into windows, but under disk utility in OSX, it cant see my W7 partition! Even when I boot into W7 manually, boot camp control panel only has OSX as the only boot disk! I have searched and returned a few instances of this, but all have the complication of people using NTFS tools, I havnt done that.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Mac Won't Boot Up - Unlock The Start Up Disc?

Apr 29, 2012

So I accidentally saved the wrong files to my start up disc.  It appears that mac is seeking direction and isn't getting it.  All I get is the white screen with the spinning ball.  Things I've tried already, 1. (Shift Key) Booting in Safe-Mode. result is: Mac starts to enter safe mode, the little power meter starts to build on the screen, after about 20 seconds the meter stops and the fan speed increases until it gets pretty loud.  Eventually the fan speed mellows out, but it never actually boots up.  2. (Option key) This gives me a choice of two drives to choose from, MAC HD & Mac Recovery. I've tried clicking on both drives multiple times by themselves with no luck. I've tried clicking on them seperately and then went right into safe mode with no luck. 3.  I've even tried downloading a recovery file from apple and put it on a disc. result: It reads the disc and the goes back to that wonderful white screen and spinning ball.
