The title pretty much sums it up, both computers are in the same workgroup (HOME) and I can see both computers in each network overview (when you click network in my computer on both the mac and pc).

by the way i also have a firewire cable. i did connect the firewire cable to my xp laptop but the mac cant see it. something on xp came up saying it should install a software but couldnt find it when looking up on the net..
i would prefer wireless connection but if firewire is easier and much faster then yeah firewire is ok.

I have my Mac Pro connected to my hp c3100 printer. It is shared, all sharing options are enabled on the Mac Pro. 2 Macbooks and an iMac cannot find or see this printer. Networking, screensharing, file transfers, they all work fine. Just can't see the printer. Is AppleTalk required to do this? Here's some screenshots from the Mac Pro. I have never tried to network a printer in Leopard, I seem to remember it was easier in Tiger.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a Stardom Decktank filled with two WD 1.5tb drives formatted as concatenated (JBOD). Raid version is AppleRaid 2.0.
I chose to format the disks as ntfs the first time but when I had to defragment the disks waaaaaay to often to get full speed with torrents and usenet I figured HFS+ would work better.
The only problem is now that I can't get the JBOD disk to work in Windows 7 via Boot Camp. Is there any drivers i need to install to get it to work? I have googled but found nothing.
My neighbor has an IMac with OS 10.4.11 installed. When I open System Preferences and select the Network icon, the Network window comes up but it is overlayed with a message that states: "Your network settings have been changed by another application." When I click OK, this same overlaid window comes back.
The only way I can get out of System Preferences at this point is to do a Force Quit. In other words, because this overlaid window appears, I am unable to access the Network window to look at TCP/IP settings, make changes, etc.
Next I went into System/Library/Preference Panes/Network.prefPane(more info) to look at the application that appeared in the "Open with" field. It stated "System Preference." I replaced this with a new "System Preferences from the Applications Folder, but the same thing happened - even after I rebooted the computer.
Please let me know how to solve this problem so I can access the Network System Preferences properly.

I needed Windows 7 to do some network programming for college. It integrated with using the CMD. Well, I have a MacBookPro4,1. Info below. I used a 32GB partition to install windows 7. Now that I have bootcamp 3 and drivers installed, I notice something that I am afraid will affect with my Mac OS X partition of the drive. I can see the files from windows 7 for the system of Mac OS X on drive E. How to a make this drive invisible to windows so no virus or trojens get to it.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI cannot "see" my Windows partition from the preferences pane in bootcamp (osx) (where I would go to set Windows as a boot partition). The only way I can make Windows to start is by using the Option key at boot.
Strange this is, the partition is visible on my Osx desktop (mounted), I can browse the files etc... but Bootcamp somehow thinks it's gone.
I installed Win 7 in bootcamp and everything was working fine. Then I started to play around with rEFIt to install Linux as a 3rd OS. I managed to install everything but since the driver support in Linux was poor, I decided to wipe out Linux + rEFIt and return to the initial setup (OSX + Win7 in bootcamp). I deleted the Linux partition and rEFIt but now, my MBP starts and I hold the option key, I can't see the Windows drive anymore. The (NTFS) partition is still there and I can access all the files from OSX but I can't boot it.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI recently installed windows 7 (7001) on a new drive (750gb) and re-formatted my old windows 7 drive (80gb) to be used as a backup for OS X. After that the windows boot drive was not available at start-up. Here is how it went:
original set up:
HD (os x)
Windows drive (80gb)
after new drive:
HD (os x)
windows drive (80gb and 750gb) I had windows 7 installed on both drives and at windows boot was given two choices of windows 7.
This worked fine until I reformatted the old 80gb drive to be a second mac drive and at start-up the windows boot drive was not visible only HD (os x). The windows drive is still visible on the os x desktop (all files are visible) but not under "disk startup" in the preferences pane.
current set-up:

mac backup (80gb)
windows 7 (750gb) not bootable
I tried booting from windows 7 disk to repair but it does not recognize any bootable windows drive. Should I go through bootcamp utility to repair the windows drive?
I have a new imac (love it!) and have installed vista on a 32Gb partition using Boot Camp. I was planning on saving files I create in vista on the external Hard drive. But I can't see it when I'm in Vista so can not save files to it. It is a terrabyte disk and is used by Time machine. Is there anyway I can save to it or should I add another external HD just for windows, I can see it when I go to system hard ware (it says seagate HD etc but there is no info on files sizes etc-there is a button which says populate but I dare not press it as I'm scared it will screw up my back ups) Another irritation is that when I reboot back to mac it throws out the internet and I have to reset the modem and router so it works again.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI set up a triple-boot system on my MBP (Early 2008) with OS X SL, ubuntu 9.10 and Windows 7 Home Premium. I have a 500GB Hard Drive, and allocated 100 GB for Mac OS X, 60 GB for Windows 7, 40 GB for ubuntu, and the remainder I formatted as FAT32 for storage to share between the three operating systems (to hold iTunes and iPhoto libraries, movies, etc).
I use rEFIt as my bootloader, and all three operating systems happily load whenever I choose them to. The problem lies with the FAT32 storage partition. OS X recognizes it quite nicely and I use it regularly. Windows and ubuntu, however, do not mount it. What's more, Windows Disk Manager identifies the space as unallocated space.
I created a new Boot Camp partition with Windows 7 Ultimate on my MacBook Pro (i7, 2.8 Ghz, 750 GB HD) running Mavericks 10.9.5. The 2 disks were about 70 GB (Mac side) and 680 GB (Windows side). I wanted to create an extra, data partition and created it after having installed Windows. I used IPartition to do this and resized the Windows partition to about 90 GB and created an empty partition and formatted it with IPartition as Microsoft NTFS.
Now, when I boot into Windows I cannot see the empty data partition: but it's visible and mounted when I boot into Mac side.Â
I tried to to create new volume on empty space with Windows Disk management but got this warning and canceled that operation fearing that that would mess up the booting into Mac or Windows or both:Â How can I get that empty partition visible in Windows?Â

I just recently installed Windows 7 on my macbook pro. Everything seemed to work well, especially after I installed boot camp for windows and its drivers.
However I can't seem to connect to the internet. My router is detected but when I select to connect to it I get no internet access.
I've searched everywhere and have one nagging issue. After I uninstalled Parallels I keep getting two Parallels Virtual Network Connections under Network in System Preferences. It happens every time I restart, I have to redeleate them. Has anyone had this problem after uninstalling Parallels?
View 5 Replies View RelatedIve got a DrayTek Vigor2700 router. The DrayTek router is located in the first floor and is hooked up to the phone line. It creates Wireless network (called "default") for the first floor. On the second floor there is an AirPort Extreme Basestation. Its hooked up to the DrayTek by ethernet and creates a network (called "AirPort Extreme". To the AirPort there is a 500 gb USB drive and a USB printer connected.
1 floor: DrayTek hooked up to the phone line creating a network
2 floor: AirPort Extreme hooked up to the DrayTek via ethernet, creating a new network. Got 500gb USB drive and a USB Printer connected to the AirPort.
AIM: I want to be able to access the USB drive and the printer over internet. I dont have a MobileMe acc, and i dont want to create one. I know it would be much easier if the AirPort would be hooked up to the phone line directly, but Its not possible...
My iMac (running Snowleopard) can't acces any share in my network. It consists of a NAS (DS209) and a mediatank (popcorn hour C-200). I have defined shares on the NAS and a share on the mediatank.
In Finder I see both the mediatank and the NAS. Both are connected according to Finder (resp. user=admin and user=nmt). However when I try to access a share on the NAS or the mediatank via Finder, I get an error-message:
"The operation can�t be completed because the original item for �XXXX� can�t be found."
Also I can't Time Machine get working using a specific share on the NAS. Time Machine recognizes the share, but when I select the share I get an error message OSerror 13.

In the Finder on my MacBook, I can see the name of my PC in the 'Shared' section of the sidebar, but I can't access it because it is a work computer and therefore belongs to a domain so I can't access the PC from my Mac. However there must surely be a similar way to access my Mac from the PC?Â
I just want to be able to transfer files relatively easily between the two machines without using a USB stick or similar.Â

I have had my MacBook for 6 months and it has worked just great with my WiFi network and any other WiFi I have happened to connect it to. This morning, while I was downloading some files, my internet connection died on me. At 1st I thought it was my provider and I usually fix that by restarting my Router. I did that, but nothing happened. I could detect and connect to my WiFi but I had no internet access! My wife's PC and mobile phone connect perfectly well to my WiFi and so does my iPhone!!! My MacBook now only works with Ethernet. Let me add that I have the 13.3" MacBook unibody running the latest Leopard 10.5.8. software upgrades.
View 6 Replies View RelatedAfter creating a guest account I noticed that anyone uses that account can use my (remembered) secured network connection. Normally, in my network settings, remembering used networks option is checked. When I look into the keychain, I see two entries for my network name. One is in my logins section and the other is in the system section. I suppose, the guest uses the entry which is in the system section. If I delete the entry which is in system section, it is been created again on next connection.
If I do not want any guest to use my network connection, I am having to cancel the remembering used network option and select disconnect on logging out option in airport advanced settings. But; if do this, I am having to select my network and type its password every time I login. I simply want if a guest uses the Guest Account, he wouldn't able to use my network connection without entering the correct password. Is it possible?

I have an Airport Extreme base station and am curious if there is anyway to allow temporary access to my wifi signal its configured with a WPA passcode. I have neighbors that come over and use my wifi but then continue to use it when they return to their homes, is there anyway for me to allow them temporary access or create some kind of guest network that I could turn off when they leave? I HATE having to change the administrative password when they leave because I have to re-enter it on all of my devices.

It doesn't have an airport facility so my friend has also given me a 802.11g wireless ethernet adapter. I have followed the instructions exactly (accessing the adapters internal configuration and setting it to the wireless networks SSID and channel, then going back into the network settings and re-setting it to "obtain IP address using DHCP') When i restart the computer the network status reads as "built in ethernet is active and has a self-assigned ip address. you may not be able to connect to the internet" (the marker next to it is yellow)
needless to say I cannot connect to the internet.
I'm not very well versed in networking or IP stuff, but maybe someone can help me. I have an airport extreme running the wireless network in my house. I know my IP number (it changes, but I'm switching to a static #). Is there a way I can access my network over the internet through the airport extreme? I have a mini-server device running on my network that utilizes port 80 and I'm sure there's some way to read that over the internet. (if I'm using the wireless network, I use address http://10.0.1.3/webpage.html to view) Is there a way to view that address from the internet? And lastly, if am I opening up a can of security worms if I try this?
View 2 Replies View RelatedAfter Lion upgrade I cannot get my remote access program (Timbuktu) to show my desktop to remote users. The sleeping screen (not the hard drive) is set for "Wake for network access" and all other settings are checked and appropriate including an update to the newest Timbuktu 8.8.3. The screen wakes from keyboard or trackball activity but not for incoming access. Note: The remote user sees the frame for the desktop in Timbuktu but is shows a sleeping (dark) screen. The file and clipboard exchanges still work but the screen ignores the instruction to wake. Access worked perfectly with Timbuktu until three weeks ago. Then it just sleeps like a teenager on Saturday morning unless tapped on the shoulder by a parent. Call-ins don't get answered.

I want to set up my old Mac Mini as a home server for our Apple Tv2 and my Macbook pro, but I am having difficulty setting up iTunes. All of our music is stored on an external hard drive, attached to the Mini and i have set up an iTunes library on the Mini too. So far so good, and I can access this library on the MacBook as a shared library, and the Apple TV through home sharing.
But, I want to go further and add to and edit the shared library (i.e. the one on the Mini) using iTunes on my MacBook. Am I able to also access the library file stored on the Mini from iTunes on the MacBook pro, so I am using the same library file on two instances of iTunes on two different computers?
Currently when I try (by opening iTunes on the MacBook while holding down option, and 'choosing' the library on the Mini, i get the following error message: The iTunes Library.itl file is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have write permission for this file

i am trying to hook up a mac mini to a local wireless network (airport express) so that i can access a shared iTunes library but i do not want the mac mini to be able to access the internet (other macs on the network need to be able to access the internet). is there a way to change the settings on the mac mini so that this is possible?
