OS X :: Hard Drive Not Showing Up On Leopard Install?
Dec 24, 2008
I put the leopard install disk into my computer and started installing it. It went fine until it asked me where to install Leapord. With all other installs (applications, games, etc...) my hard drive will show up and that's what I'll click on, but here nothing shows up except my iPod that was plugged in. As a note, it worked on my other computers, but is not working on my G5.

I'm using a iMac PowerPC G5 that I've received from my brother. He gave it to me with a fresh install of Leopard on it, but he unfortunately no longer has the disc that came with the computer that he also used to format it before handing it to me. With that said, I ordered a new internal hard drive. Naturally, I'll need to re-install Leopard, but I don't have an install disc anywhere. How is this going to be possible? Or will it not be? Do I have to buy a new Leopard install disc? If so where and how much?

Clearly there must be a way to do this, right? Can I install off an external hard drive? Off a USB drive? Share my macbook pro's DVD drive somehow? If the hard drive on the mac mini is completely reformatted and I plug it into the USB port on the external hard drive which I partition and install the Leopard DMG would it be able to boot off of it?

I can't install Leopard on a USB drive from my iMac, then move the drive to my Air and boot that? It's just for emergency purposes, so if trackpad gestures are missing or something, no big deal. I just want a DiskWarrior drive I can use on all my Intel Macs--especially the Air with no DVD drive. (I know I could install OS X using the Air itself--but wireless installation would be slow. Better to install OS X quickly on my iMac via USB.)

When leopard installs will it reset my hard-drive like a PC? Basically I have a lot of essential programs installed, such as FCP which I dont have the discs for anymore and I dont want to loose these programs, but I really want to upgrade to leopard.

"In addition, it is possible to completely erase a hard drive and install Snow Leopard without a pre-existing operating system in place, enabling users to bypass the possible headaches of an upgrade and go with a clean install instead."
I'm a newbie here but wonder if the above AppleInsider statement is true. I installed Snow Leopard over my existing Leopard w/out a hitch. Earlier OS X retail DVD versions clearly distinguished between "Install" and "Upgrade" - correct?. I'm confused where I read Snow Leopard required an existing OS (Leopard or Tiger) to install. It appears Snow Leopard is a "full install" DVD?

My Macbook pro has just had a new 500gb hard drive in it and osx snow leopard had not been put on it because i never got a disk when i bought it. It still comes up with the grey screen with the flashing folder which i think would be normal because there is nothing on the hard drive. How do i install OSX Snow Leopard back on it the cheapest way possible?

1. To grab all the files I need/don't want to lose (photos, music, documents, etc.)2. Then completely erase the 500GB HD so I can then install it into the new Macbook Pro and install Leopard.(I'll then externally connect the 160GB HD that came w/ my Macbook Pro and add the files I've already copied into that 160GB HD into the 500GB Leopard installed HD in the new Macbook Pro)So, currently my 500GB HD is connected to my Macbook pro and I want to completely erase everything so I'll then have a completely clean hard drive, to then install into the Macbook Pro, add the installation discs and install Leopard into the 500GB HD.

Basically my hard drive randomly decided not to mount. It is a 60gb USB external hard drive. I have used a different mac, a PC and both didn't mount the hard drive. On windows it can not recognize the driver to mount but on mac nothing! I even tried external power, different USB leads and a new one. Still nothing. I think it may have become corrupt.

I have a MBP with a dead hard drive that I am trying to resurrect. The MBP was working one minute then it just froze up. On reboot I got the flashing folder with question mark meaning it couldn't find the OS. I tried to access the drive remotely from target mode but it wasn't listed. I pulled the drive and hooked it up to an SATA to USB cable and tried to access from other systems but again it wasn't displayed.

A friend brought his new 15" Macbook Pro to me after trying to install Boot Camp and Windows XP. He said that he made a second partition for Windows; however, the drive showed only one partition formatted with NTFS. I tried reinstalling mac os using the disk that came with the laptop. When it came time to choose the destination drive, none showed up. I then went to Disk Utility. The drive and the volume showed up in the left panel but I could not Erase or do anything else - all the options were grayed out. With no firewire port I am also unable to use target mode.

I have a Western Digital external hard drive. I just noticed that the icon was not showing up on my desktop. This could have been the case for awhile, I don't use it that often just as storage. I have restarted, unplugged and replugged many ways. I can hear it running and the light is on. It does not show up in the system profiler, I have reset the PRAM. I have not as of yet got new cables to try as this was discovered last night. Is there anything else I can try until I get new cables? Or what does this sound like to you. Also, what are the chances that the information on my drive is gone? This is the only copy I have for some work that I do.

My MBP was recently squished in a motorcycle accident and its hard drive and superdrive were destroyed. Is it possible to buy a new hard drive, put it in an external USB 2.0 enclosure, then install OS X on it using the discs that came with my destroyed MBP in a different Mac, then put the hard drive into the squished computer and have it use that hard drive as its startup disk? The motherboard on the squished computer is fine, I just can't install OS X on it because it has a broken superdrive.

We have a 320gb external hard drive formatted in FAT32 so both the macbook and our windows computer could use the drive. We copied 5 gigs of music to the hard drive to view on the Windows computer. The computer recognizes the drive and shows that 5 gigs are being used but I cant see any of the files.

I have a Toshiba 160 GB USB external HDD (no power supply required) that I use simply as a backup for some Windows programs when I am using my virtual machine. It required a double USB cable and its icon showed on both the Windows and iMAC screen until a day or so ago. It is a functioning unit when I put it on a separate PC. I have not been able to correct the problem and in viewing some of the forum items I keep seeing suggestions to view the 'System Preferences --> general' - I do not see a 'general' nor any reference in the 'apple' that refers to hard drives (external or internal).

Recently I just converted my old PC's 250gb Hard drive into an external drive. In the beginning everything worked fine. Though I could only read the files from it on my mac, I was fine with that because there was so much old music and pictures that I wanted to get off of it. There happened to be one particular picture that I couldn't find searching through the HDD with my mac, so I thought maybe I would be able to find if I looked for it through a windows system.
So I then plugged the external into my Windows laptop. After failing to find the picture on the PC, I plugged the hard drive back into my mac, but for some reason it's not showing the files. The hard drive is being found, but when i click on them in the finder no files show! The drive is not erased because the capacity and amount free is still the same. And to put the icing on the cake when I plugged the drive back into my PC a message comes up that says "The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error".

i just bought an external hard drive enclosure for a new hard drive but it doesn't show up when i plug it into my macbook. the enclosure lights up with a blue status light when i plug in the USB but it never shows in disk utility and finder. leopard is installed on the external hard drive (im trying to clone my macbook's hd). i'm thinking its the enclosure but are there any steps i can take to ensure i'm doing everything correctly? the external hard drive is working, it was installed in my macbook yesterday but i took it out because time machine restoring fails also, i plugged the external into my time capsule. the blue status light turns on meaning its plugged in but i only see my time capsule in the network

- Airport extreme base station
- 1tb (mac os journled) WD Mybook (or whatever they are called)
- file sharing under airport utility is turned on
I can't see the drive either in the list of available drives in the airport utility setup, or in any side panel. I plugged the drive in via USB directly to the laptop and it recognized it fine to use for time machine...

'Quartz Extreme required'
'iMovie requires a graphics card that is compatible with Quartz Extreme.

I have an aluminum Macbook from late 2008, model A1278. I just had to replace the hard drive, and need to install an OS on the currently blank HDD. Problem is, my CD drive doesn't work, so I can't just install from a disc. I had installed Mountain Lion on my old hard drive, but the original OS was Snow Leopard. I haven't succeeded in getting any of my information off my old HDD. Is there another way to install either Snow Leopard or Lion onto my new hard drive?
