Got a new MBP 13". Just the one problem. Every now and again, always when I am touching the mousepad, the icon sizes on the desktop change. I then have to go into Show View Options and set it back again to what I want.

Besides the View Options, which changes all icons, is there a way to selectively change the size of only one icon on my desktop?

My desktop icon size CONTINUALLY defaults to a very tiny size. I know where to change the size > click on desktop > show view options > adjust icon size; however, inevitably as soon as I close it out, it defaults back to a very tiny size..I mean VERY tiny. So I have to continually do the above procedure to increase the size again. Doesn't look like there is a way to LOCK that desktop icon size.

I have noticed something strange in Snow Leopard when dealing with file permissions in a Get Info window. Previously, in Leopard, when I would Get Info on a file and open the "Sharing and Permissions" tab, I would be unable to edit permissions until I had clicked on the lock icon and entered the admin password. However, I have found that in Snow Leopard, I can edit permissions with the lock icon closed. It doesn't even ask for a password to change file permissions. I have been searching around to see if anyone else had noticed this, but to no avail. I am concerned, as not having to enter a password to change file permissions could be a bit of a security issue, couldn't it? I also don't believe it to be specific to my machine, as I have access to another Snow Leopard computer and it is the same there.

after repairing disk permissions using the Apple OS Disk Utility and/or verifying "Sharing & Permissions" in the "Get Info" window of a drive, all connected hard drives on the system will suddenly have a small lock icon on the lower left corner of the drive icon. "Custom" is what appears in the "Get Info" window in the "Sharing & Permissions" for both System and Admin users and they can't be changed. The drives won't open when clicked on saying something about "you don't have correct permissions or privileges to access this drive".
Rebooting, creating new users, repairing Disk permissions and/or repair disk in Disk Utility, Disk Warrior, booting from another drive and even booting from an Apple OS installer disk have no effect on the locked drives, I can't get to them......................

Does anyone know if there's a way to lock my desktop icons (so my curious kids don't mistakenly - or not so mistakenly - move stuff around or into trash). My desktop is kept fairly simple (icons for the various HDs and folders for homework). We've also had the issue of items going *poof* from the dock - which is an easily fixable issue - but a little bit of a nuisance to have to retrieve from time to time.

I've just downloaded Safari 5.1.5 and want to create this icon on my desktop, however, I don't want it as a 'short-cut' icon but as the same icon I see on the docking station.I was previously able to do this with Safari 5.0.3.

On my desktop I have 1 folder that contain completed projects as well as multiple folders to manage current projects I'm working on. Occassionally I also have files on the desktop that I am working on for the day. Whenever I arrange by name (or any other criteria) the files and folders on my desktop move all around. My completed folder is now mixed in with files I'm working on and my current projects folders are all over the placed depending on what I named them. I would like a way to pin certain folders to their place on the desktop (similar to how the hard drive icon is pinned), so when I arrange the desktop files by a certain criteria these "pinned" folders would not move.

New to Macs and struggling a bit with the high res/ average eye sight combo.
I've managed to get most of my apps text sizes ok for me to see (though FF skews things up a bit), but I find my toolbar icons and text size to be a bit small for me.
Two main apps cause me grief. Mail and Office. I can't seem ti find anywhere where I can increase the size of the toolbar icons. In mail i can use Large icons, but that doesn't affect the toolbar. In Office (mainly Word/Excel) I can't seem to find anything at all.

how do you make the size of the thumbnails larger than 128x128? 128x128 is a bit too small to see my photo's easily. I know that I could use Coverflow but I prefer to use the standard thumbnail view.

I have a 24" iMac and when I open Numbers everything just appears to be small. I was able to increase the size of the boxes with the zoom feature, but that didn't help with the icons across the top. I've been using Excel for a while so I'm trying to learn how to do some of the stuff with Numbers, but it is killing me squinting to make out the different options. Is there any way to change this?

Is there an option/tweak/add-on to show the size of a highlighted file in icon view? I know I can change to a different view or use 'Get Info' on the file but that defeats the purpose. Is there anyway to see this information on the information bar on the bottom of the window (instead of just number of files and space available on disk)?
Nothing major, just something to make life a little easier.

I'm relatively new to using a Mac seriously, having just acquired a lovely new MBP with Snow Leopard installed. I may be missing something obvious, but is there a way to limit the icon preview feature to just showing previews for files less than a certain size? My background is with Linux, and KDE provides a configurable file size cut off above which icon previews are not shown.
I ask because I've got a folder full of large (ie 16GB) ASCII files full of output from some scientific algorithms. Whenever I browse to that folder, the Quick Look Helper eats up all 8GB of my system memory before the OS kills it off and it moves on to the next file. This is *really* irritating.
So, is there a way to limit icon preview's behaviour to small (ie normal) files, or do I just have to turn it off completely?
