OS X :: Limiting CPU Usage To Programs

Jul 7, 2009

I have noticed that some of my programs when I run them take a massive amount of cpu usage and make my computer run very hot. This question seems like a stretch to me but is there any way to limit the amount of processing power a certain program uses? I don't really care if the program takes a longer amount of time to complete what it needs to do, I just don't want my computer overheating.

IMac :: Is There A Way To Chip Off CPU Usage From Other Programs That The Computer May Be Using

May 20, 2009

I purchased my first Mac ever, the iMac with 3.06ghz, 8GB and 1T.

I LOVE THIS iMac.

Now, I got this iMac to use Protools with plugins. Now I'm only using 3 tracks with virtual instruments and is already asking me to increase CPU usage or remove RTAS(virtual instruments).

Is there a way to chip off CPU usage from other programs that the computer may be using? Anyone has solution except removing some virtual instruments, I mean I got this iMac to work with music.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Image Editing Programs - Heavy Memory Usage?

Jun 15, 2012

I am wondering whether the memory use I see is common to the Mac OS X - touted as the graphics pros choice - it's seems anything but to me.  I have a mid 2010 iMac 27" 3.2 GHz Intel Core i312 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 (just upgraded in the hope that it would improve the problem - it didn't)ATI Radeon HD 5670 512 MBMac OS X Lion 10.7.4  That spec should be more than ample.  No.  Pixelmator uses up to 5GB yes - GB) just opening the app.  If I dare to open an actual image - let's say a 120mb jpg for editing - the memory usage is even higher - usually resulting in the image not opening at all.  GIMP is similar, but not as extreme - opening the file uses around 2GB.  Nevertheless, both of the above seem to me to be examples of excessive memory usage.  Certainly, my machine slows to a crawl when doing anything related to images?

Limiting Resources To Apps In Mac OS X

May 23, 2012

To reduce the signal to noise ratio, please do not respond to this post asking questions of why I want to do this or with opinions about the validity of the task.I have a mid-2010 MacBook Pro Core i5 and I am consistently enraged that a computer this powerful is always lurching along when I am trying to do multiple things at once.I would like to limit the amount of RAM/CPU available to applications on a systemwide basis. All mobile OSes institute this policy (except for Android and its runaway memory munching) and this is what makes those system react so quickly.I know about nice and freezer but these solutions require constant tweaking for each process run. I would like a solution that is applied to every process, systemwide, if that is possible.

MacBook Air :: Limiting The MAX Fan Speed Via SmcFanControl?

Apr 9, 2008

I saw an interesting post today by pgharavi who says he is using SMCFanControl to set the max speed of his fan to 4000RPM:Quote:From the terminal:
/Applications/smcFanControl.app/Contents/Resources/smc -k F0Mx -w 60e0

(that's the default 6200 RPM)

/Applications/smcFanControl.app/Contents/Resources/smc -k F0Mx -w 3e80

(That's 4000 RPM Max)

I obviously gain a few degrees C when limiting to 4000, but at least my MBA shuts up.Not to question his knowledge but have others tried this and does it really work? might not go so far as to set the fan to 4000 (but I might). Given all the thoughts on Coolbook, what do you all know/think about this? Safe and effective relief from fan headaches?

MacBook Pro :: Limiting Size Of VM Swap Files Possible?

Jun 13, 2010

I have the new 15" with SSD (80 GB Intel) and HDD (500 GB). I have put System and Apps on the SSD, while the user's home directory is on the HDD. So far so good, performance is great. But I have run into the problem of getting the "Memory on the startup disk is too small" warning twice. That's a pretty unpleasant experience, with apps freezing etc. Of course, nominally my startup disk (the SSD) is far from full, since the apps occupy maybe 30 GB and the System maybe 15. I should have over 30 GB of available disk space. So what happened? I found out that the culprit is virtual memory. Somehow my system at some point thought that it needed a lot of VM (around 40 GB), and the VM daemon started writing swap files (up to 40 of them!) on the startup volume, until it got full. After quitting some apps, somehow the situation gets corrected and the system automatically reduces the number of the swap files again.

What are my options to keep this unpleasant problem from occurring again in the future? Here are the ones I can think of:
1. Move the VM directory to HDD. I don't like to do this because it would significantly hurt performance.
2. Create an additional partition (~10-20 GB or so) on the SSD, then move the VM directory to that partition. This way, I always know the max. size of VM and I won't be surprised. Disadvantages: I will need to repartition the SSD and re-install system and all apps. And I may be wasting precious space on the SSD.
3. The ideal solution would be an option in the VM daemon to limit the total VM size. I have perused the man pages, but I can only see an option to set the size of each individual swap file, not the overall VM size.

OS X :: Limiting Particular Computer Connection Speed On Network

I'd like to be able to selectively limit/disable the connection, without having to remove the ethernet connection on said computer. I can access the router status and enable/disable the connection for the entire network, but I can't seem to selectively limit/disable a particular connection.

MacBook :: Unable To Open Programs - Programs Are Not Displaying

Mar 25, 2010

I have a question about using my new samsung tv as a monitor for my macbook. I have all the cables and such and my TV reads the computer. It actually shows the desktop background, mouse, and the toolbar on the tv...
BUT....when i try and open a program such as safari or itunes it does not display the program on the monitor but rather on my macbook screen. It shows the program open on the tv monitor but it shoots off the screen and then opens on the macbook screen.

Also the mouse disappears from the tv monitor screen on the left side only, and when it does it becomes visible back on the macbook screen! Any tips or suggestions on how to get the programs to show up on the monitor instead of the macbook screen?

OS X :: Normal RAM Usage?

Is this normal? I'm pretty sure it's not, at least the iTunes bit. I am using cover flo and I know that's supposed to increase the RAM usage but I don't even have the window open (it's in another space.) I've been seeing this high amount of RAM usage lately so I ran techtool deluxe and there was an error with the volume structure. I repaired permissions from the OS X install disk and since then the volume structure test passes but I'm still getting the unusually high numbers.

Here is a picture of the disk usage. Does this look normal? Does anyone know what the problem could be?

OS X :: Increasing RAM Usage?

May 31, 2009

I'm new to OS X and just had a quick question about the way that it uses memory.

I have the istat widget on my dashboard, and I've been monitoring the amount of free and used RAM. After I reboot the system, only about 20 percent of my memory is being used between the OS and the programs I normally use (adium, safari, itunes, etc.) Over the course of a couple days, the amount of used ram increases to about 50 percent, even though I'm just using the same programs. So, I'm just wondering how exactly the operating system deals with used and free RAM. Once the system uses ram for something, will that ram be reported as used until I reboot? Why does used ram continue to increase even though I'm doing the exact same things?

I'd just appreciate if someone could enlighten me on how the system uses RAM and whether I need to reboot every few days for optimal performance. I know it's still only using 50 percent (i have 4 gigs) - I'm not afraid of running out, I'm just wondering for my own knowledge.

MacBook Pro :: 40% CPU Usage?

I have an iStat Menubar and it's constantly showing me 40% CPU usage. It also shows the same number in Activity Monitor. However, when I look at the processes running, they don't add up to 40. In fact, they only amount to around 6% or so. I did click "All Processes", but nothing was running that would cause it to be 40%.

OS X :: Using DirectoryService And ReportCrash - 100% CPU Usage?

Jul 5, 2008

I know there are a couple threads on this here and on other forums, but I can't find an answer.

DirectoryService and ReportCrash are constantly using up 100% of the CPU. First it will be directoryService and then ReportCrash....back and forth, back and forth.

I don't know if it matters, but I have 3 external drives attached to the computer with are shared over the local network.

I have no idea what's going on. This has been happening constantly for a week now with the computer always on!!! Some threads I have read say to just let it do its thing, but it just doesn't stop!!!

Does anyone know how to fix this??

Yesterday I encoded a DVD in like 20 minutes. I did a restart to refresh my memory but it's taken like over 2 hours of encoding and it's not done yet.

OS X :: High CPU Usage With Video

Feb 26, 2009

I've searched all over the internet but have yet to come across an answer. I love my Mac, but why is it that when I play a video in a web browser on my MacBook, (be it Flash, QuickTime, etc.) my CPU usage is anywhere from 60-80%, yet when I play the same video on a laptop running Windows, the CPU usage is always in the single digits?

I realize that video takes a toll on the CPU with integrated video cards, but it doesn't seem to have the same effect on Windows based laptops with integrated video cards. Is the CPU usage possibly just calculated differently, or is the Mac architecture somehow just really inefficient at this?

MacBook :: Idles Hot Even With No CPU Usage / Why Is This?

May 10, 2009

I've been trying and trying to get my 2007 Macbook C2D to run cooler. It idles at about 60-65 C even with no CPU usage (verified through Activity Monitor etc) and it used to get up to 95+ when playing any sort of video (Youtube etc) which would cause playback stuttering and other problems after 15-20 minutes.

I've tried a number of techniques to drop the temperature, most recently undervolting with Coolbook. Interesting, these have been relatively successful at lowering the *peak* temperature-- videos now only bump the CPU temp up to 70 C or so-- but it still idles at the exact same temperature it did before, around 60.

Does anyone have any theories why the idle temperature would remain high even after I've reduced the peak temperature, and even when CPU usage is hovering between 2 and 5 percent?
