OS X :: Memory Usage Creeping Up And Up?
Jan 17, 2010I am having trouble with memory usage creeping up and up. Itg slowly goes up to 90% and i have to restart it to get it to release unused memory.
Slows the machine down somewhat.

OS X :: Memory Usage Not Going Past 70 Percent
Mar 20, 2010My iMac has 4Gb RAM and this morning I had a problem with the blued process chewing up memory even though Bluetooth was off and I don't ever use it. After a bit of searching I found the probable cause. Anyway, whilst looking at the above issue, my system was really crawling but the memory usage wasn't over 70% and CPU usage was low too. The swap space usage had jumped up to 4Gb and all the time I was opening new Safari windows researching the issue. The system was getting more and more sluggish and the swap usage was growing but memory usage stayed at 70%. Why wouldn't it use the last 30%?

Jun 23, 2014I'm using Safari Version 7.0.4 (9537.76.4) with Mavericks on MacBook Pro 13" late 2011. Has 4 GB RAM. The problem is Safari consume 787 MB of ram with ONLY 1 tab open! "Facebook"..When I clean my ram with memory cleaner, it goes down to 300 MB, 5 secs or less and it goes up again.

In activity monitor, I see each process has uses virtual memory of over half a gig, with a total VM size of over 40GB. Is this normal? Is all this virtual memory eating space on my hard disk? Why does each process require so much virtual memory? Is all the software on my Macbook, bloatware?

MacBook Pro :: Finding Memory Usage For 13"
May 24, 2010So I finally went to the Apple Store and got my very first Mac, a MacBook Pro 13" .
Anyways, I got the baseline configuration that came with 4 GB of memory. Playing with the Activity Monitor, I noticed that after awhile of using the computer, the green "free" memory piece of the pie becomes progressively smaller until it's almost gone. Does that mean I have no more free memory left? But I'm not running a lot of programs at once. Just Safari and iTunes, maybe Pages too.

Jun 19, 2010I just bought my first mac (2010 13 inch base model) and i was looking in Activity Monitor when i noticed that my free system memory is around 15-20mb. Is this normal? The only things i have running is chrome, itunes, and steam. Would these programs eat up memory? if this is a stupid question please forgive me!!!!

Whenever I run a Windows 7 Pro virtual machine under Parallels 7, ~ 6 G-Byte of wired memory is used. I have allocated 4 G-Byte of memory to the virtual machine. I would expect plenty of free space and that used to be the case but no longer. I am tired of an unresponsive machine and spinning beach-balls.

Apr 27, 2008I recently bought a Power Mac G5 with 3 20" cinema displays, each with their own video card. I've since stopped using one and it sped up some. But even with the most simple tasks, it is hella slow and freezes sometimes. If I just have Firefox and iTunes open, it runs slow and the fans kick in overdrive. The main video card is an ATI Radeon x800 with 256 RAM and the other is a 9200 with 128 RAM. how to free up my RAM and speed it up?

No. Pixelmator uses up to 5GB yes - GB) just opening the app. If I dare to open an actual image - let's say a 120mb jpg for editing - the memory usage is even higher - usually resulting in the image not opening at all. GIMP is similar, but not as extreme - opening the file uses around 2GB. Nevertheless, both of the above seem to me to be examples of excessive memory usage. Certainly, my machine slows to a crawl when doing anything related to images?

May 27, 2012My wife has an Intel Core 2 Duo Macbook with Leopard 10.5.8. We've run the software update. We've run repair disk permissions. We've restarted the computer. But despite all of that, her virtual memory usage is really high compared to my computer. Each process is using from approximately 600 - 1100 MB of virtual memory. She has 12 GB of free space on her hard drive, but her computer has been running slower lately and has had the low startup disk space warning.

Aug 26, 2010I have a iMac DV G3/500 (Special Edition) from summer 2000. Anyway, I am using Mac OS 10.2.8. Recently, my start up disk's memory has gone done from 1.2 GB available free space to 668MB (currently). I haven't saved anything on this disk so I can not understand why this memory has dissappeared. I have also had icons on the start up menu disappear. Could someone please tell me how I can restore the missing memory?

Mar 21, 2009I just bought a early 2009 MAC Pro and it came with 3GB of RAM, I ordered 3 2GB sticks of memory to replace the 3 1GB sticks that I had in there from Kingston. I turned off the unit, I popped the little levers and pulled the memory out of slot 1, 2, 3 and then replaced the memory with the new Kingston in slot 1, 2, 3
One of the sticks in is not working at all and I get the RED LED light no matter what slot I move that chip to. So I am running on 2 of the new Kingston memory chips.
Can I mix the memory and add the 1GB into slot 3 and 4 with slot 1 and 2 full of 2GB chips?
Also how to I run the memory utility again? I went to /system/Library/CoreServices/ and then I see the program Memory Slot Utility.app
How do I run this? I'm used to no spaces and I type ./then program name

Nov 15, 2009I've just updated the os to 10.6.2 and my 16gb mac pro 1,1 only shows 8gb in the system profiler. The memory tab shows they're all working correctly but size says "2gb" where should be "4gb".

Feb 27, 2010So I want to see how high the temps get on my laptop with the new AS5 application. I know of a free program on windows that maxes out the CPu to 100% usage, but any app exist for OSX? I using SL. I have been ripping my home DVDs all day, but doing the same 3 over, gets old quick. Do any of you know any free app that will stress the CPU? Also is there an App that will stress the GPU?

Jan 7, 2009Is this normal? I'm pretty sure it's not, at least the iTunes bit. I am using cover flo and I know that's supposed to increase the RAM usage but I don't even have the window open (it's in another space.) I've been seeing this high amount of RAM usage lately so I ran techtool deluxe and there was an error with the volume structure. I repaired permissions from the OS X install disk and since then the volume structure test passes but I'm still getting the unusually high numbers.

My computer has been running incredibly slow lately. I think it has to do with the disk usage as every time it has to access the disk, it slows to a crawl. I've had a huge amount of beach balling, especially when loading a new App or a new page in Safari.
Here is a picture of the disk usage. Does this look normal? Does anyone know what the problem could be?

May 31, 2009 I'm new to OS X and just had a quick question about the way that it uses memory.
I have the istat widget on my dashboard, and I've been monitoring the amount of free and used RAM. After I reboot the system, only about 20 percent of my memory is being used between the OS and the programs I normally use (adium, safari, itunes, etc.) Over the course of a couple days, the amount of used ram increases to about 50 percent, even though I'm just using the same programs.So, I'm just wondering how exactly the operating system deals with used and free RAM. Once the system uses ram for something, will that ram be reported as used until I reboot? Why does used ram continue to increase even though I'm doing the exact same things?
I'd just appreciate if someone could enlighten me on how the system uses RAM and whether I need to reboot every few days for optimal performance. I know it's still only using 50 percent (i have 4 gigs) - I'm not afraid of running out, I'm just wondering for my own knowledge.
MacBook Pro :: 40% CPU Usage?
Sep 17, 2009I have an iStat Menubar and it's constantly showing me 40% CPU usage. It also shows the same number in Activity Monitor. However, when I look at the processes running, they don't add up to 40. In fact, they only amount to around 6% or so. I did click "All Processes", but nothing was running that would cause it to be 40%.
