OS X :: Using 2 Disks For Time Machine / Can't Save Configuration File
Sep 30, 2010
I have 2 hard disks which I use for Time Machine, one for the main system, and one for my data. However, whenever I backup, I have to reconfigure what it backs up, and this is quite an annoyance as Time Machine is supposed to be a simple. Is there anyway I can save a configuration file for it that I can use for each drive?

I'm running on an iMac and my system recently crashed. I went through the whole process of trying to reboot in Safe mode, then running Disk Utility, then 'fsck'. Looks like my drive should work, but it still freezes upon startup.
So. My last option is to reinstall OS X from my install disk. Not a big deal since I've been running Time Machine backups on an external drive. Here's the problem: my install disk is 10.4.10 but my backups are from Leopard. I upgraded to Leopard online without purchasing a disk.
Is there any way to do a full system restore from my Time Machine backup without the 10.5 disk?
Can I reinstall 10.4, then upgrade to Leopard (or Snow Leopard), and then run my full restore? Would I then need to clone my system to a separate drive before restoring to my internal drive?

we recently bought a new iMac with Mavericks and a Lacie 5big thunderbolt series disk. At the Lacie disk we configured as they were 2 hard dsik of 4 Tb each one and added to time machine. Today the user called saying that time machine only made 2 copies one general at 4pm and the other one at the second disk at 7pm and no more copies until 10pm.
I know that time machine makes copies every hour, every day , every month, etc; so we were thinking why it only made 3 copies in that mount of time and why it took the second disk. In the old iMac with Lion this never happened.Â

Is there any benefit to ordering the MAC Pro Raid card for setting up 2 x 500gig SATA drives in a Raid Zero configuration? Or..Is this accomplished just as well via software in leopard??
Apologies if this is a stupid question - but just wondering if I can save some $ by not having to order the RAID card without giving up anything.
I will use a 3rd 1TB drive for Time machine for back up.

Somehow I ended up with two backup folders for Time Machine: inside the Backups.backupdb folder are "Pedro's MBP" which contains backups from 2008, and "Pedro's MBP2" which contains backups from 2009. This was not intended. Now when I open Time Machine, I have to select either "MBP" or "MBP2" to read from, but if I select "MBP2", for example, I can not see the backups inside "MBP" and vice-versa.
How can I merge these two sets of backups into one common folder? ie, merge all backups from "MBP2" into "MBP", so that when I open Time Machine, ALL backups are available at the same time. I have seen posts covering how to copy/move backups to a NEW backup drive, how to make and use multiple Time Machine drives, but nothing on how to merge multiple backup folders or disks into one.

At work I back up my laptop to an external disk using time machine. I'd like have a second back up at home. When I back up to the disk at home Time Machine does not recognize the back up on the work disk and writes the whole drive instead of doing an incremental back up. Does this mean that Time Machine can only do incremental back ups to one disk?

What's the best way of backing up a time machine backup external hard disk? Are there any disk checking tools for the mac, I could use to keep track of the health of the drive?
I can not afford too loose data, but I don't wish to break the bank either.

I want to wipe my system and only restore certain files to keep my system uncluttered and fresh. I use Time Machine so I thought I don't have anything to do now that everything is backed up. Someone told me once that Time Machine files can only be accessed by the user that created them (me). If I wipe my hard drive, that user will no longer exist. When I reinstall OS X, it will be a new user, so would that new user still be able to easily access and copy back the files from the Time Machine drive onto the internal drive?
I know there's a feature called "Browse other Time Machine Disks" but I don't know if that allows me to do anything I want and whether it will conflict with the new system. I also know about Migration Assistant but I don't want to use such automatic methods since I'm afraid it will restore problems from my old system. So in short, will I be able to easily get my files back one by one (not "all or nothing" like with Migration Assistant) from Time Machine when I will have my clean, freshly reinstalled OS X, with possibly a different username? Or does this only work if I type in the exact same user name as I am using now?

My dad's iMac was stolen this weekend and am now trying to restore his iPhoto Library from Time Machine backup.Â
The Mavericks iMac was dutifully backed up over the network to a Mavericks OSX Server Mac Pro Time Machine Server's Drobo for months. I am now attempting to restore the iPhoto library at the Finder level to a Mavericks Macbook Pro.Â
I have connected to the server's backup disk via Finder and see his "Alan's iMac" listed there without the red minus circle. I then click on the Time Machine icon in the Menu bar and hold down the option key and select "browse other backup disks". I then select "Alan's iMac" and then Time Machine starts up, but it is not showing his files prior to Tuesday, the day I setup the Macbook Pro.Â
I need to be able to access iPhoto Library from August 30th which came from his now stolen iMac in order to restore to the Macbook Pro.Â

The hardrive in my late 2006 Macbook 2.0ghz laptop has finally kicked the bucket. I confirmed this with an Apple Genius at my local Apple store after she plugged in an external drive and running disk utility to run a diagnostic. However, I forgot to ask her about some details concerning my time machine backup which resides on an external drive that connects via firewire. I do know that my files and folders should be restored without issues. Although, I'm not sure about the following:Â
1. Will all my non-apple applications / programs be restored?
2. Will my configuration settings for mail be restored?
3. Will my itunes settings be restored (I have an iphone and ipad that connects to itunes)?
4. Will my contacts in address book be restored?Â
I still have the original drive of this laptop which still works just fine and boots up okay (never erased the OS) where the upgraded drive that I installed a few years ago is the one that failed. Therefore, I will be reverting back to the original drive that is smaller and slower.Â
The Genius recommended to run disk utility from the Snow Leopard Upgrade DVD (I originally had Leopard installed) to format the drive/install the OS and then do a full restore from my time machine backup. Although, I'm not sure if all my programs and settings for certain apps will be restored. I appreciate any help or other optioins I can possibly do to get back my saved files, programs, and settings.

I'm having problems with Time Machine. First, I get the message that I need more space even though there is 1TB available on each and only 500GB on the boot disk being backed up. I've started fresh.Â
Second, both backup disks are shown on the "Exclude" list and are grayed out, so I can't take them off it. Nor can I add a disk I do want to exclude.Â

I'm trying to setup a macmini server with four different firewire drives (has this working in 10.6.8 working great) however in lion server you can only have ONE timemachine backup destination.apple put an Share items/Backups folder with a .com.apple.timemachine.supported file in it. and set permissions to a group com.apple.backup_access However i can't dublicate this setup and have the system accept an extra folder on another drive.Â

I have a 2006 Ibook with a G-4 processor. For some reason every time I save a document under a specific formatting, it will change it back to appleworks when I open it up. The document will then appear as untitled and I will be forced to re-format the document again before saving. Also, when I send a document through e-mail even before it has been changed to appleworks the person receiving will only be able to open it as an HTML or as a Google doc. Does anyone know how I may be able to fix this?

Just bought an 320GB external just for Time Machine, & then installed Windows XP/SP3. Will any future Time Machine backups save all the Windows stuff? For instance, I've got a photo editing program thats only on Windows. Will any of the photo's, & the program itself be backed up?

I currently have a 2007 MB, which I'm upgrading to either a MBP or MBA as soon as the new ones drop. I have a question I have my MB backed up with time machine to an external HDD, how can I save all my current info (pictures/files/documents) that are backed up on the external and use the new machine as a clean slate? How would I access say the pictures from the old machine once I start using the new one, ( the old machine itself will be sold) so I'll just have the backed up info do I need to do some other type of "save" before I sell the old machine?

I have a time capsule at home and I am thinking about hooking up a hard drive to my network at work for time machine. Can my computer use time machine on both units? I'm sure incremental backups wont be saved on both. For example if I make two changes to a file at work and then go home. I wouldnt be able to go back to those two changes, but it would have the original from a older backup right?

I've just hooked up my 2 Tb time capsule, which is supposed to be the destination for time machine and also have a share folder to share music on the network. Originally I wanted to partition the drive, but since that appears to be such a headache I'll probably make do with one partition.
if time machine will try to overwrite the share folder when it runs out of disc space?

What can be done if Time Machine failed to save certain data to external hard disk, but I do have the old hard drive? I have a new IMac 10.9.2. The old IMac was hit by lightning/surge. Restored data from external LaCie disk but some information is missing. Apparently Time Machine did not save it to the external disk, or we just can't locate it. We do haves the old hard disk and will put it in a box to be able to access it.
Is partitioning the answer?

I want to remove a file from Time Machine. I'm thinking I'll do: find /Volumes/Time_Machine/ file.name -exec rm {}; Is there anything special about files stored on the Time Machine Volume? By deleting a file throughout, will it corrupt my backups?

I have foolishly moved a time machine back-up file from my external drive to trash. My problem is now that I cannot delete it properly from trash. Moreover, I my external hard drive is acting up. I cant eject the drive, I cant write to it and I cant delete or repair it from Disc Utility.
The file in the trash has got ...inProgress and I have tried to empty trash with normal empty, secure empty and through Terminal.

This time it didn't. What am I supposed to do with it? Why do they show up and should I have been moving them all along?

I have a Time-Machine backup on one of my external HD's. It's a backup of my old MBP system. I'm using my Mac Pro now and I wish to delete all the files which I don't need from the backup. Why does it not let me delete anything? It says I do not have enough permissions or something.

My MacBook's hard drive died last night, but luckily I have a backup from earlier that day on my Time Machine enabled external HD. My friend has a MacBook, and I have a paper due for a class in about a week, so I was wondering if I could hook my HD to her computer and recover just the word document. I would have tried this by now if the guy at the store who's replacing my hard drive had not told me to be extremely careful when trying this or else it won't restore when I get my computer back.

I just bought an external hard drive and am using it to back-up my MacBook Pro with Time Machine. Both my MBP hard drive and external hard drive are 500 GB, but I noticed that my MBP HD has 85 GB of files on it while my back-up HD only has about 70 GB. I just want to make sure all of my files are backed up properly.
