OS X :: Application That Allows Me To Modify Time Machine Settings?
Jan 19, 2009Is there such a thing out there? I want a simple application that will let me set the update frequency to once a day.

View 1 RepliesSomehow, recently a new error message has popped up that won't go away no matter how many times I click "OK." That means I can't modify my network settings.
Things I've tried:
1) Clear error logs with Onyx
2) Throw away com.apple.networkConfig.plist
3) Repaired permissions
4) fsck -fy
I have a Vizio 22" HD monitor and it works great at 1680x1024 but don't know how to get those settings into my Macbook.
I have it hooked up via Mini-DVI to HDMI and the color is great, just wish I could get better settings. Seems like I am stuck with 1280x1024 else they are all interlaced and look like *****.
I had a problem with my iMac in that the second monitor kept flickering black every few seconds. After much pulling out of hair, I managed to sort it by using SwitchResX, creating a new resolution with a slightly different refresh rate.
Well, I've now reinstalled Leopard, and I'm not sure what files SwitchResX modified. I have a mountable backup image of the old installation and I just need to know what files to copy across.
I've copied over Users/Me/Library/Preferences/ByHost/(URL).6881753F-E268-5D65-B162-DE4A346FC4E3.plist
and
I *think* one other one (I cant remember which .plist file it was).
Rebooted and I still have the problem, so I assume I've missed the correct file....
I dont know what settings I used either so can't redo it.
I did a complete restore, the only thing so far I've noticed is that I lost my screensaver settings. Besides that everything seems the same.
The only other thing I'm worried about is that it ported over HD inconsistencies from my previous failed machine.
how can I use Time Machine to simply backup user settings (like folder views, trackpad/mouse speeds etc. I want to then restore them on another OS X partition (on the same hard drive)
View 2 Replies View RelatedHow can I change time machine settings? I only want Time Machine to backup my Home Folders and the items on the desktop. Currently, it's backing up more files which overwhelm my backup drive. How do I get it to back up Home/Desktop ONLY?

Besides files, does time machine save settings as well?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI had severe account troubles on Snow Leopard, and today, the Mac partition became corrupt and unreadable. I have a very recent Time Machine backup of that user account, but I don't want to transfer the account itself. Can I just transfer applications, documents, and settings, and not the account itself? And how do I do a clean install of Mac Snow Leopard onto a hard drive with a previous installation of the OS?
View 2 Replies View RelatedRecently had to replace my hard drive on my iMac which had OS X Mavericks. I accidently ignored the Recovery option when I first restarted my Mac not understanding it would completely restore everything as it was. However, im taking the opportunity now to rebuild my Mac manually, learning a lot and saving the space that many of my unneccessary files took up. I've rebuilt my itunes Library including restoring playlists, also my iPhoto library and Album organization. While I am able to replenish all of my mail messages (over 3000) through re-connecting the settings for mail, what I lose is all of my mailboxes and sub-boxes I had set up, as well as those hundreds of messages I had flagged and tagged in various colours. I would like direction on how I can restore my mail settings, messages and mailbox structure from my Time Machine back-ups. Really all I need to know are which files I need to look for from that earlier date and how to safely replace them into my current system.

The hardrive in my late 2006 Macbook 2.0ghz laptop has finally kicked the bucket. I confirmed this with an Apple Genius at my local Apple store after she plugged in an external drive and running disk utility to run a diagnostic. However, I forgot to ask her about some details concerning my time machine backup which resides on an external drive that connects via firewire. I do know that my files and folders should be restored without issues. Although, I'm not sure about the following:Â
1. Will all my non-apple applications / programs be restored?
2. Will my configuration settings for mail be restored?
3. Will my itunes settings be restored (I have an iphone and ipad that connects to itunes)?
4. Will my contacts in address book be restored?Â
I still have the original drive of this laptop which still works just fine and boots up okay (never erased the OS) where the upgraded drive that I installed a few years ago is the one that failed. Therefore, I will be reverting back to the original drive that is smaller and slower.Â
The Genius recommended to run disk utility from the Snow Leopard Upgrade DVD (I originally had Leopard installed) to format the drive/install the OS and then do a full restore from my time machine backup. Although, I'm not sure if all my programs and settings for certain apps will be restored. I appreciate any help or other optioins I can possibly do to get back my saved files, programs, and settings.

My Macbook Pro has been not updating, crashing applications, and force restarting. The problem has finally showed itself this morning. Finder crashed and when I tried to open it, I got a " Cannot open because file or application does not have a back up on time machine, and it is corrupted or incomplete (null)

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a G5 Duel 2GHz Power PC, Recently I was losing the time, date and wireless settings so I assumed as my machine is now 4 years old the PRAM battery was up for renewal. This has now been replaced but I'm still losing my settings, not all the time but randomly, sometimes I lose my wireless key sometimes I lose time and date sometimes both, this can happen daily.
I have removed the (New) Battery and checked the voltage and it reads 3.6 Volts, I haven't checked this under load though, so presuming that the battery is OK, what else could cause this.. a failing System Board?
I was trying to set up my Time Machine to an external hard drive. I didn't continue because it asked to "initialize" the hard drive which I had a lot of important things on.
I have another external hard drive I'd like to use but, my Time Machine has this error code of -43. What is this and how can I use my Time Machine on another external hard drive?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI am connected to the internet via a belkin N+ router..... this is in turn connected to an adsl modem...I am having no problems with the signal to the router but at least four times a day my internet disappears....
When I run Network Diagnostics hey presto, your internet is working fine....The only things I have changed recently was that as I am running osx 10.4.11 I was having that issue where you couldn't access Network in sys pref, it kept saying "your settings have been changed by another application", I found a solution on here whereby you delete the plist prefs and rebuild them... That worked a charm but now I'm wondering is this connected in some way....
or...
I got software from the makers of the belkin N+ wireless usb dongle chip that came with my router (belkin don't provide osx support but said that I could get a utility from the chip makers) I installed this but it never worked so uninstalled it, and ran disk utility and safe boot and pram and fsck (everything I could think of)
I only have one location in network, and airport is the only active network port
any ideas...????

I'm doing a clean install of Snow Leopard (the iMac's been acting out a little too much lately, and it's been lagging, even after I upgraded the RAM), so I want to do a clean install.
I'm backing up the information using Time Machine, but I don't want to use Time Machine as a way to get my information back. I'm merely doing the back-up so I can go in manually and copy whatever information I want to keep from the backup folder to where they ought to be now.
I'm asking specifically about application-related settings and information. Things like keys and registration information. Also, as far as my iPhone is concerned, I'd rather not have to go through a whole thing, and since I'll be rebuilding the iTunes library as it was, I would like for the iPhone to not ask to do a clean-install, so if I could copy the back-up information for it as well so that it recognizes the computer that would be swell.
I'm getting a message every time I open Network in System Preferences saying "Your network settings have been changed by another application". I click OK, and the box goes away and immediately comes back. It means I cannot use the Network part of System Preferences at all, because this message is caught in some kind of loop, and won't go away.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI cannot enter the time machine when I press the time machine icon. I press and nothing happens, so I'm not sure even if it is backing up at this point. When i go to my Tme Capsule it has the folder there for back-ups and the most recent, but no access from the icon.
View 1 Replies View RelatedAfter doing this tutorial: url... I have a problem with default application settings (file association). In other words, file function "Open with" is empty. I chose default app for specific file type, do function "change all" (or just start specific application) and everything works fine. Files are associated whit that app. But after restar (or shutdown) every association is reset to none (open whit also empty). FileVault is off.So after restart I must to associate files whit programs manual, or launch all programs.
What I tried: Deleting com.apple.LaunchServices.plist - no help Script run in Terminal: /System/ Library/ Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchS ervices. /Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -seed - works, restores default applications and Open with list (but only till restart)MAINTENANCE app- works after first restart, after second restart the same problem

I can't find out where I change the applications I had set to start automatically when you reboot the computer.

I just replaced my HD on my 15"MBP. The install went well until restoring my data from Time Machine. The apps came over fine but none of my data did. Yes, I checked all the boxes on the "restore from backup" menu.
Of course now when I start up time machine the backup isn't there. How do I get Time Machine to recognize the backup? I have it on two places - a time capsule and a separate external HD.
I am on Tiger 10.4.11 on Mac Book Pro Intel duo. All updates except for Parallels installed. Have run permissions repairs and preferential treatment. Tried to delete preferences for system ... Every time I try to uncheck the box marked or open the Date and Time preferences, it freezes and have to force quit.
My neighbor has an IMac with OS 10.4.11 installed. When I open System Preferences and select the Network icon, the Network window comes up but it is overlayed with a message that states: "Your network settings have been changed by another application." When I click OK, this same overlaid window comes back.
The only way I can get out of System Preferences at this point is to do a Force Quit. In other words, because this overlaid window appears, I am unable to access the Network window to look at TCP/IP settings, make changes, etc.
Next I went into System/Library/Preference Panes/Network.prefPane(more info) to look at the application that appeared in the "Open with" field. It stated "System Preference." I replaced this with a new "System Preferences from the Applications Folder, but the same thing happened - even after I rebooted the computer.
Please let me know how to solve this problem so I can access the Network System Preferences properly.
Thank you.
Have installed an 120GB SSD in my Macbook Pro 2010 but have had a couple of problems. Sometimes when you try to enter time machine and or Finder the machine freezes. Also the only way out of this is to hold the power button down and reboot. I have been informed by Apple that there are slight differences between the 2009 and 2010 models. Another odd thing is Skype will not load up automatically on startup, despite making sure this option is ticked. Most other things seem to work. Reinstall original hard drive and all OK.I have tried this with OCZ and Crucial SSDs and get same result. I have also installed the SSDs by cloning and by direct original OS X disk.
